I'm so happy to have found your wonderful videos. At nearly 66, and an aspiring artist, I am trying to learn as much about watercolors as I can to improve my skills. You are a great teacher and I really like learning from you. Your birches are top notch for sure. You are very generous with your free videos. Us "Po" people on fixed incomes really are so grateful. You have no idea how much. xoxo
The fireplace redo looks fabulous! Grant did an awesome job on the mantle. An area rug under the chairs will be the finishing touch to complete the look. You made the most of that awkward fireplace. It looks sooo good.
I absolutely love all of your painting tips. I just found you this week. You are an amazing artist. I love all of the realism that you bring to your painting. Please keep making these videos. I am in Stratford Ontario. There is some really beautiful areas in the city for inspiration. My walks let me take lots of photos to get me inspired. I am retired, self taught and loving watercolours. I've never sold any paintings but love giving them away. I'm hoping to be able to sell some in the near future. You inspire me. Thanks so very much.
I loved your technique with these birch trees. I’ve painted them several times but never thought about changing the directions of the bands. Thank you so much!!
I just today have come across your video and what caught my eye was your subject matter. I just absolutely love birch trees so decided to watch to see how you would paint yours. Thank you for such a great lesson on how to paint these trees. I have painted birches before but had always scraped the paint out and did a fill in where I had taken out too much. I really liked the way you’ve shown me another, and I might add, better technique. Thank you for such a great tutorial. I haven’t picked up a paint brush in a very long time but after watching this video I’m itching to get back to it. I am, as of today, a new subscriber and will be following you as I feel you are a wonderful and gifted teacher, and I know I’ll learn a lot from you. 😊
That's very kind of you to say and thanks for the subscribe. Birch trees are awesome to paint. I hope you have fun getting those brushes wet again. Happy Painting!
This was amazing. I have been winging it with my birch trees. Sometimes it's a success, others not so much. The layering concept for the bark is brilliant. Thanks so much. I've had a request for a large commission of birch and have been putting it off. I could listen to your voice and instruction for hours, Shelley. Don't understand why only 17 comments on this one.
Thanks so much Francine. I’m only a small account so not surprising that there aren’t a lot of comments. That’s fine. I enjoy painting and sharing even if only 10 people see it. Happy painting! 😊
Hi Shelly, thank you so much for these videos. I love your camera/cameras set up. So cool to watch you, your palette, and your work surface at the same time. These Birch trees are the best I've ever seen. I live in New Mexico, in the mountains just outside of Albuquerque. I have a request for a future video... could you show us how to get a really rich very dark background for a still life as an example? Oh, it's great you have a professional mic too. I don't watch live as I like to watch your videos on my TV. I can't comment from my TV, so I have to get online to comment. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much Sue. I'm glad you are enjoying my video setup (it was a learning curve for me). I will add how to get a really dark background to one of my future demos. Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks for the information and inspiration. Your trees are beautiful. I was shocked at how the brown in the background knocked back that bright blue on one side of the trees. That is what I learned from this wonderful tutorial. Thanks again.
You are amazing at your watercolours. Planning to watch more today. I will be starting my second Birch project as the first one is now a 'practice' run. lol... I am one of those artists who use ' sparse' supplies...LOL/grrr... From Mississauga , ON. Happy New Year 2024
I discovered you last week and I’m so impressed with your talent for painting, for teaching and for connecting with your viewers… thank you for sharing your knowledge
You are an incredible teacher and spirit, if I do say so myself. Thank you for taking the time to teach. I am in need and you are absolutely Fantastic. Trust me, I've been in college and medical school classes longer than I have been alive...so it would feel. This is to say that I can easily pick up on a good teacher within a few minutes (as it were).
I really appreciate that James. It means the world. I have always tried to explain things in a way that I had wished they had been explained to me. Thanks so much for watching and your kind remarks :)
You are amazing! I can't tell you how much I appreciate how thorough you are. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent. You are a great teacher, best I have found on UA-cam thus far. My birch tree paintings have come a long way just from watching your tutorial.
Love your painting so much! Just found your UA-cam channel, all tutorials are awesome! It’s great to see you presenting many different techniques here!
I just found you and this video today, and I am thoroughly impressed! Great painter with GREAT instruction! I'm now a subscriber! FYI, in case you decide to teach how to paint birch trees in the future, I can tell you why they look so raggedy: they are CONSTANTLY peeling! I had one in my yard when I was growing up, and I mighta peeled a layer or two before I was told it was bad for the tree.🤥 Oh, but it was right there peeling before my eyes like a sunburn... 🤣
Hello, newbie here. I love the detail and realism you are able to create. I'm a bit confused about the stapling, though. Does the final product remain stapled to whatever it's stapled to ?
Welcome. Thanks for watching. The tape and staples are removed once the painting is completely finished and dry. Then it can be framed. The staples hold everything in place during the process and allow it to dry totally flat (otherwise it wrinkles)
I know the feeling Hazel. I always felt like it was too much as well but after painting lots of birches I slowly got braver and liked the effect much better. Thanks so much for watching 😊

Thanks Rebecca. Yes, we always think the first color on the paper is so dark .... until the actual darks come in, right?

Birch trees don’t grow everywhere. People in Texas for example, rarely get to see them. They don’t blend in with any other trees. They stand out.
They are quite common here in Ontario. I love that they stand out from other trees and are so uniquely different. Thanks for watching.

about the bonus, what kind of paper do you use?
Can you get those brushes at Currys?
These are Biaelk travel watercolor brushes and I got them online on Aliexpress.com, not Curry's.
😮😮
Oh my! I was certain the trees were too blue, but no……

Le bleu c'est quelle couleur ?
