I was actually on the pill for ten years before I stopped when we were trying to conceive. Got pregnant within three months and am now almost seven months along with an uncomplicated pregnancy thus far. For me this is amazing since I've had severe PCOS since I was a teenager and didn't think I could get pregnant so easily ever.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have been very curious about how/if birth control affects eggs in the vault. I have heard that misconception that birth control may negatively impact fertility once it is stopped. As a 30 year old that would like kids in the future it is such a relief to hear all of this explained so clearly and to know the reason why my nexplanon isn't impacting future fertility. Thank you!
Hi Dr. Crawford! Can you also do a video on the different types of birth control and how they impact fertility? (Depo shot, nexplanon, switching between the methods, most of your life using birth control methods, etc) Now that we’re in fertility testing I’m going through every choice I’ve made and wondering if that’s what is now making us struggle. Thank you!
I was on the pill for 10.5 years. Been off of them since October. No luck getting pregnant yet :(. Really getting sad. Love your videos. Hoping we can get pregnant soon. We’re ready!
Thankyou for being very detailed with much needed information, you told me more than my own doctor could. Thankyou, it’s a sigh of relief to know that long term affects of the pill cannot really harm my chance of trying for a baby later on in life. I have already been on it for 3 years, so it was starting to be a concern. Thankyou again. Beautiful 💕
I think the potential side effects of the pill should be discussed more openly. I understand the need for the pill in terms of medical reasons etc… but most people take it purely for birth control.. I just think before giving it to women as an “easy” contraception, the full list of side effects must be discussed. There are other forms of birth control that don’t have those side effects. Also when will research be done in a male birth control?! 😅
While it may not cause infertility I think its best to stay away from messing with your hormones if you have a healthy hormonal cycle as horones are essential for your health
That graph does NOT show there's no difference after 6 months. It only goes to 12 months and theyre still not equal. Im going to do my own research. I recommend you do too
yes birth control hurts your fertility that’s the answer doctors won’t tell is the truth about birth control that’s why if birth control fail teens get abortions btw i’m not way pro life i’m just spitting facts about birth control my mom knew someone who had a stroke because she was on the pill and my cousin had issues getting pregnant and her first pregnancy she had a miscarriage which was so so sad :( but she had issues getting pregnant because of birth control honestly if doctors are doctors they should tell the truth about how it effects fertility in a bad negative way not a good way that’s why i’m not on any birth control because i wanna have babies lots of babies and stay fertile mertile like my grandma says
The pill can increase your chances of getting blood clots, which can cause strokes. This is very known, and doctors will take blood pressure semi regularly to monitor your risk. But the pill does not cause infertility, so please don’t spread misinformation.
My child’s mom was on birth control for 10 years plus and now trying to conceive but we’ve had 2 miscarriages back to back and they said it’s cause her progesterone is too low so I think this is half true
I really needed to hear this message. I was having such an anxiety attack about being on the pill for so long. I have been off the pill for over one year. My periods are regular and I ovulate regularly. I am concerned that my periods are a bit light. How can I improve on this ?
Hi dr Natalie - what if I have hpv and I’m afraid of taking BC Because of the increase with cervical cancer also if I’m 39 - is it ok to be on it for 14 years?
Toni Not true. BCP are one of the main most used treatments for endometriosis. You need to be on the proper estrogen/progesterone ratios in the birth control. If not it could lead to issues. But any good Dr. treating for endometriosis would know the best bcp.
Thank you for this video! Could you talk more about spotting on the pill in your next Q&A? I have regular spotting while taking the pill and my doctor says this is normal since it’s regular/happening same time each month before my period. Just would like to understand more around that.
I need a UA-camr professional opinion. 42 year old female on the patch, she rips the patch off the morning after because of a skin rash and claims she got pregnant... every other "time" for almost a year the patch worked. What are the odds removing the patch a day later the egg gets fertilized? Thanks.
I loved the video but I do hear from many of my friends about having irregular periods after coming of the pill and taking a lot longer until they become regular again (over a year!). I know that the hormones from the pill "flush out" quickly once you stop taking it, but I wonder if we're going to discover that for some people, the prolong repression of pituitary gonadotropin secretion does have some long lasting effects, maybe at the epigenetic level, that do take longer to be reversed.
Thanks for sharing!! The hormones are so SUPER SHORT acting, so they do not need any time or help to flush out - likely there are other hormonal issues that need to be uncovered, pituitary suppression is well off by 60 days - but many women do other things (cutting calories, dieting, exercise, stress, drugs, addreall, etc that can impact pituitary function!). Post pill amenorrhea has been disproven, especially with pill formulations now (we were more concerned with high dose estrogen in old school pills).
@@NatalieCrawfordMD thank you that's really reassuring. I'm a biology PhD student and find these topics so interesting! One of the professors in my department actually specialises in epigenetics of the reproductive endocrine axis, and it's amazing to see how much knowledge we have but then how much we still don't understand at the same time 🤯
Thank you so much Doc! I have a hormonal imbalance and very irregular periods for years that's been giving me a recurring acne. Then an OB prescribed a combination pill to treat it. It did get rid of the acne and my period was normalized but I stopped it after about a month. My period has been normal for a year ever since I stopped taking the pill. However, the irregular period and acne came back and I was so hesitant to take the pill again because of what I also heard from people I know that it caused the thinning of their uterus. Hence, they can't conceive a child anymore. I wonder if that's true. Nevertheless, I'm so grateful for this information. I think I have to talk to the OB again and take the pill ASAP lol. Bless you Doc!
So I went on a combined birth control for a year to help with hormonal acne. It helped tremendously but now I’m off it and my hormonal acne has returned. How I can stop this adult acne for good without bc ?
I was on the pill for 8 years in my 30s. Non smoker, healthy and low alcohol intake with a low Amh. I have no idea why other than age. I can only imagine it was the birth control.
Me too. Never smoked, never drank, nothing. My siblings all had multiple kids. They did not use the pill except me and my sister. Guess the two who can't have kids? Yep,me and my sister. They have not done enough studies on it to really know. And case studies were only done for a limited time on a limited amount of people. The government often says something is safe, but then says otherwise years later
Hi Dr- I have a question I was on the birth control pill for 7 years I started a new pack a week late. I missed my period took a test and it’s positive. Didn’t start a new pack since I know. I’m worried because I took birth control pills before I knew I was pregnant. Did I do any harm? Thank you for your answer in advance.
Hi im going to get my birth control soon. I’ve done a test before and the doctor told me i had low follicle count . I really don’t know what that means and does that mean im not as fertile? (Im 18) However im planning to do birth control and not sure if i should go with hormonal ones like the implant or non hormonal ones like iud . Im scared if i take the hormonal ones this will effect me severely . But getting IUD seems like its super complicated. Please advise asap . Thanks!
Thank you fo making this video, it was really informative and reassuring. One question I have though is, what kind of birth control pill would be best for someone with a history of depression and how it affects that?
Often women with depression respond well to pills that are less androgenic (less testosterone like action) and are continuous or have a very short pill free interval.
Great video! I've heard that taking the pill during peri-menapause is a good idea. Is this true? Why or why not? What helps the most during peri-menapause? Thank you!
Will I get endometrial hypoplasia if I make it a habit of skipping the “placebo pills” so I don’t get a period? Because I definitely skip the placebo pills and start a new pack to avoid acne breakouts during my period...
(NOT a doctor 🙏🏼)... I think you should consult your Obgyn on that (I guess it would be a different answer for different types of pills, and maybe you'll be advised to switch to a form of contraception that is suitable for skipping your periods completely if that's your preference). Also an ultrasound can tell the thickness of your uterine lining and assess your situation. If the lining is quite thick and you prevent it from bleeding out than that can increase your risk of cancer, and if it's thin than that risk is lower. Bottom line it's better to use any drug according to its instructions, and always consult with a doctor about any changes.
Skipping placebo pills does not cause hyperplasia - if you are continuously taking your pills then you are preventing the endometrial growth with the daily progesterone!
I currently have and IUD, Kyleena, and I haven’t had a period or even spotting for about 10 months. Is this normal? Could you talk more about the effects of IUDs and fertility or is it the same as the pill? Thank you!
Why are there different kinds of progestin used in bc pills? Are the newer generation versions better than the older ones.. norethindrone vs drospirenone?
Hi Dr - what do you think about taking DIM supplement to help with estrogen balance? Should I take it before trying to conceive or after getting off birth control?
I also think it’s important to talk about the impact birth control has on the endometrial lining. As you mentioned, bc thins the lining and it might take a few cycles to regain an endometrium thick enough to support implantation. I think that also might be a contributing factor to fecundity rates after stopping bc.
Agree! Also why after a couple months there is no difference. I usually say stop at 6 months prior up being ready to try if your periods are absent bc of hormonal contraception
@@NatalieCrawfordMD I wish you had been my doctor 😭 When i got my IUD removed I got a whole big speech about “you could get pregnant tomorrow” after 8 years of bc with no periods. It’s been months TTC and after a miscarriage we finally found out it was due to thin lining. I wish it was more general knowledge to give your body a few cycles before TTC. Makes perfect sense but it goes against everything I’ve been told. Thanks for dispelling myths!! Your channel is great.

What is considered a regular cycle? I have been off BC since March 2022 and my cycles have been ranging in length from 27 - 30 days. The other month I was about 2-3 days past my expected period and I thought I could be pregnant, but then I got my period. I just wonder if that is abnormal enough to go see my ob/gyn. Thank you! i have been watching a lot of your videos!
Love the video! Dr.Crawford I have the Copper T IUD as had really bad constant bleeding with the DEPO shot and Implanon implant but the BC pills help with my acne is it okay to use the Copper T and BC pills together?
I was on the pill for 7 plus years, I didn't have a period when I was on. I may have bleed 2 times and if I did, it want very much. I stopped taking the pill 1.21.21, it took about 6 weeks to have my first period. we are trying to get pregnant. But can't seem to find my "fertility" window. Is normal not to ovulate yet?
@@Bleeeeeeepe I used them and was able to find when I ovulated. I had two “peak” days a couple days apart so I was confused. We ended up pregnant but we just a miscarriage. @@NatalieCrawfordMD Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer! Hi Dr. Crawford! Would you be able to talk about about the birth control shot and whether or not this delays hormones getting back to normal? I have been off of the depo provero shot for a year and am only starting to get something that resembles a predictable period. Thanks!
@@NatalieCrawfordMD thank you for your reply. i suppose the larger point im driving at is: is there a risk of birth defects to attempt pregnancy too soon after taking pill? are the eggs damaged during pill use? thank you again.
I came off the Cerelle pill on November 11th and apparently your supposed to have a withdrawal bleed 2-4 weeks after and then your normal period the following month. Ive not had any withdrawal bleed or period. Ive had lots of cramping that started mild and are getting stronger. We are desperate to get pregnant but im getting more anxious the more the days go on. Can you fall pregnant once coming off the Cerelle pill without having a withdrawal bleed or period? X
Hey New to the pills and gyn is taking forever to reply so important question Do you continue taking the pill even before during and after your period ?
Hey Dr. Crawford you said the pill helps with cramping, I’m assuming it’s NOT normal to have horrible cramps during that placebo week? On the pain scale like 8-10 take your breath away kinda pain🥴
Natalie Crawford, MD thanks! I’ve made 3 separate appointments with 3 different obgyns and they keep getting cancelled so I may just see my pcp and ask about it.
Hi! Thank you for the amazing and educational videos! I just want to ask if it is ok to occasionally miss a few months (usually a period of 2-3 months) then start again on my own volition without seeing an ob/gyn? I've been on the pill since 2018 after having been diagnosed with PCOS with visible symptoms of very awful acne outbreaks, irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, and painful dysmenorrhea. Pills helped alleviate all that. Usually, I missed those months due to financial constraints but restarted when the situation got better. I stopped and restarted twice since I started taking pills and the worst symptoms I experienced being off the pill is my irregular cycles and outbreaks returning. BTW, I take the 21 day pills and then nothing (no placebo pills) for 7 days after if this has any effect on the answer. Thank you for your channel! It has been really educational not just for me but also for my family. Stay amazing! ❤️
My OB doctor recommended for me to take birth control for three weeks and then get off it and I should obviously in two weeks after that how accurate do you think that would be since I have PCOS and it’s only for three weeks?
Hello, great video! Gonna share it with everyone I know :) Great chanel idea, internet needs spaces with accurate medical informations. Good job on delivering this to us. As for the question - could you elaborate on the topic of taking multiple packs of pills without making placebo breaks? What influence does it have on endometrium and so on. Btw for different videos I'd love to hear more about Cervical ectropion and Unterine fibroids and their influence on fertility also.

Hello maam i am from India and it’s difficult to understand your accents (its my fault) so will you please reply me I am having a question! That i had used contraceptive pills in regular basis till 2yrs ago does it affect my future pregnancy plz reply ma’am
Hi Dr. Crawford, Thank you for this video! I am so glad I found your channel. No one ever really talked about these things. I just started taking the pill to regulate my cycle. Before I had very unpredictable periods and sometimes they were so heavy and other months I would have nothing. and never thought to much about anything. I wasn't sexually active until I got married this year. Now I feel like i'm going back to the basics in understanding how my body works. I have been hearing so many things about the pill being bad and the natural birth control method, about it causing PCOS. etc. It's hard to know what is "normal" and when there could be a problem. I hope to see your video on answering the questions about birth control. Like can you still get pregnant while on the pill?
I came off the cerelle pill on the 11th November 2020 and I have still not had a withdrawal bleed or period. I am desperate to get pregnant and since coming off the pill i had mild to strong ovarian cramps for about 3 weeks then nothing but occasionally I do feel like I can feel my ovaries (if that makes sense) . For the past 2/3 weeks ive had extremely sore breasts and sensitive nipples but still no sign of a period. Ive been taking pregnancy tests and all negative. I feel like crying because i just want to get pregnant and nothing is happening down there😭😭😭

Hi Dr. Crawford. Thank you so much for this informative video. It's so helpful! You briefly mentioned regularity of periods in regards to fertility. Your channel is great.
been prescribed with lady ocp for dysmenorrhea but took yasmin for 1month instead because my friend has unused pill..now i missed 1month of period..while on yasmin i had breakthrough period coz i wasnt taking it same time everyday..but still completed the pack..should i go to an ob?for my missed period..want to conceive in 4mos tume..should i be alarmed?because i have missed period for 1 month..aftr the pill
Same situation with the 3-month injection (Depo Provera)? No change to ovarian reserve?
I see an article that the pill reduces AMH while you use it. Is that right?
Love the video! Dr.Crawford I have the Copper T IUD as had really bad constant bleeding with the DEPO shot and Implanon implant but the BC pills help with my acne is it okay to use the Copper T and BC pills together?
Yes. I have a mirena and use pills. Combination treatment works well for some!
@@NatalieCrawfordMD Thank You so much Dr.Crawford!!
When I stop taking pills after many years, does it affect getting pregnant? There's a myth that it can cause infertility
Yea
Are you trying to conceive?
Not yet but I am worried for the the future fertility
@@daphneerana9972 ok
I was on the pill for 7 plus years, I didn't have a period when I was on. I may have bleed 2 times and if I did, it want very much. I stopped taking the pill 1.21.21, it took about 6 weeks to have my first period. we are trying to get pregnant. But can't seem to find my "fertility" window. Is normal not to ovulate yet?
Have u used ovulation test strip's?
@@Bleeeeeeepe I used them and was able to find when I ovulated. I had two “peak” days a couple days apart so I was confused. We ended up pregnant but we just a miscarriage. After my body decides to get back to normal again we will track and try again. I use the Premom app and ovulation strips off Amazon and clear blue.

I am thinking about IUD's can you please share your knowledge on that topic? 💞✨
I would love a video about FHA, specifically if there are different severities and if it's possible to have it if someone has a normal BMI and exercises a lot (but not professionally or at extreme levels).
you can have FHA at a normal weight - and it takes years to recover from a prior extreme level
@@NatalieCrawfordMD Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer! I went to a fertility doctor after my period didn't come back when came off the pill, and he completely discarded this possibility saying that I'm not anorexic nor a competitive athlete. I literally brought him an article with guidelines from the European endocrine society to show how my profile and blood work could match up, and he was so uninterested 😑 thank you so much for sharing such important information on all your platforms 🙏🏼
Hi Dr. Crawford! Would you be able to talk about about the birth control shot and whether or not this delays hormones getting back to normal? I have been off of the depo provero shot for a year and am only starting to get something that resembles a predictable period. Thanks!
Am actually taking this to balance my hormones
Can you explain ??
should you allow a gap in time between quitting the pill and attempting conception? do the eggs need time to 'recover'?
Ideal would be to stop 3 months ahead of time to see if you have any menstrual abnormalities
I know who can help you conceive regardless of condition under one month
Hey
New to the pills and gyn is taking forever to reply so important question
Do you continue taking the pill even before during and after your period ?
How about the shot ?
The shot can delay ovulation for 18 months so do not use if close to wanting to conceive

Hey Dr. Crawford you said the pill helps with cramping, I’m assuming it’s NOT normal to have horrible cramps during that placebo week? On the pain scale like 8-10 take your breath away kinda pain🥴
courtney sanders talk to your doctor about continuous pills! Skipping the placebo. I do this for patients with terrible pain.
BTW, I learned about you from Mama Doctor Jones and have been binge watching since. Stay gorgeous! ❤️
What if you don’t have a period at all even with taking the placebos
My OB doctor recommended for me to take birth control for three weeks and then get off it and I should obviously in two weeks after that how accurate do you think that would be since I have PCOS and it’s only for three weeks?
With PCOS this is not 100% accurate - you need to get medication to ovulate.
Natalie Crawford, MD what medications would be like an example of one?
Does vaping affect fertility??
Hello, great video! Gonna share it with everyone I know :)
Great chanel idea, internet needs spaces with accurate medical informations.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Very informative 👏🏻

Hello maam i am from India and it’s difficult to understand your accents (its my fault) so will you please reply me
I am having a question! That i had used contraceptive pills in regular basis till 2yrs ago does it affect my future pregnancy plz reply ma’am
You can never conceive except through spell casting
Am Harriet l take the brith control pills only when l had sex with my husband but if he is away l do can it affects me
Thank you so much!
I feel like crying because i just want to get pregnant and nothing is happening down there😭😭😭
Please see a doctor - something is not right
Please do an endometriosis video! I have it and I still want to learn more about it 😂
And adenomyosis please??? Since they are kind of similar I think? Is one worse than the other in regards to fertility? thanks, i love your channel!
It is recorded!!!! COMING SOON!!!

So the pills cause endometriosis, which in turn causes infertility. Hence pills cause infertility.
FALSE. Pills prevent Endometriosis- they do not cause it at all.

Hi Dr. Crawford. Thank you so much for this informative video. It's so helpful! You briefly mentioned regularity of periods in regards to fertility. I am someone who has never been on hormonal bc, and I have very regular periods. Is there any reason I should worry about hormonal bc disrupting the regularity of my periods when I decide to get off of it (after the 3 month period), if I decide to switch to hormonal bc? The regularity fits my lifestyle, and that is something I do not want to give up.
Ok coool!
