When Virtua Fighter came out in the early 90s in Arcades, the arcade my mother managed had to hire a security guard to manage the literal line that went out the door for people who wanted to play the game.
When the 360 came out there was a small rush of JRPG releases in a Microsoft bid to get entry into the Japanese market, which then dried up almost completely. About the only 360 JRPGs after the first year or so were the FF13 series. This was partly because the 360's use of DVDs rather than Blu-Ray drastically limited game size - nobody ever mentions Lost Odyssey came on 2-3 DVDs (and as a result was a late arrival to the XB1's emulation support.)

@joeherrera8826 but also shows the good side of it in stories like the cicada one. He saw tragedy then came back 70 years later and saw what that sacrifice accomplished. Every one of them was an award winning-level short story. Honestly I don't remember much of the main story. But those memory sections stick with me.

I kept my ps2 just to be able to play these though I’m still hoping they, along with Xenogears, will eventually be added onto the ps+ classics catalog.

This and Elemental Gimmick Gear - a flawed game but still a hidden gem.
I'm so glad you mentioned 999 in this! I remember when i first came across it in a Game Stop store. I wasn't sure what to buy, but i wanted to buy something unfamiliar. Skimming the DS titles, i found that one and it just jumped out at me somehow. Maybe it was the long name. But I read the back of the box and the premise got me hooked. To anyone who would like to play this awesome game in 2024, it is still available in the PS Store inside the "Zero Escape: The Nonary Games" bundle that also includes the second chapter of the series (which is composed by 3 games in total). I absolutely loved it and played all the way through to the end of the trilogy.

The crazy thing about the Sega Saturn's short life is that its follow-up, the Dreamcast, had a SHORTER lifespan. The Saturn launched on May 11, 1995 in the U.S. and was discontinued in March 1998, 2 years and 10 months later. The Dreamcast launched in the U.S. on November 27, 1998 and was discontinued on March 31, 2001, 2 years and 4 months later. As much as I love Sega, it was probably a good thing they got out of the hardware business, sadly. 🤔

Perfect dark is still one of the most unique FPS multiplayers that to this day i cannot recall any other MP trying to replicate... It had remote rockets and a "secret" ventilation shaft in a bathroom stall allowing you to fire them and control an entire map from relative cover, almost every game i ever saw since either lacks the remote or lacks a perfect location to use it , making it often a dead weapon with no perfect situations till endgame.
5:30 Lost Odyssey may be difficult to get physically but it is playabe through back-compat, digital or physical on current Xbox Series X/S & Xbox One consoles. Also it often goes on sale for about $5 every few months on the digital store!
Drakan the ancient gates, Mercenaries 1&2, Freedom fighters for ps2, jurassic park warpath, starwars revenge of the sith. There are so many awesome forgotten games out there.
Vanquish! A blazing fast sci-fi cover shooter by Platinum Games, absolutely oozing style. Originally only came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, was later ported to PC, but still remained fairly unknown.
Lost Odyssey was brilliant, but to me, "1000 Years of Dreams", the little collectible visual novels were even better than the main story. Honestly, each and every story I found moved me to tears.
Project Snowblind & Operation Winback are masterpiece games imo. Winback was a title originally released on the N64. I think I bought it out the bargain bin. That game was so fun and had so many gameplay mechanics that were used in many later video games, including Metal Gear Solid Sons of liberty and Resident evil 4. Ahead of its time.
Lost Odyssey was a favorite of mine on the 360. I remember at one point Microsoft gave out digital copies for free. I instantly grabbed it up and played through it. I then went to GameStop that same week and found a used physical copy in great condition for a decent price (my guess is someone owned it physically, got the free digital version, and then decided to trade in the physical copy).
I'm usually not taking the bate of complaining about your personal favorites not being on the list... but this time, I can't help myself. Take a game that pushed the boundries of what was technically possible, is mechanically as close to perfect as you can expect from the time, is well balanced, has really few bugs, gameplay that was so ahead of it's time as fusion power is, and you ice that cake with a compelling narrative that is playabale through different perspectives, making it highly replayable and has one of the most stellar voice casts of any video game ever... so, what's that game? It's Sacrifice.
Lost Odyssey is one of the best games I've ever played in terms of storytelling and strategy! It's not easy, though. Especially if you go for all the achievements, like I did.
I'm glad Lost Odyssey is on this list. Such a great JRPG. The battle system is a bit of learning curve, at least it was for me, but nonetheless a great game. The narrative is probably the best part of it.
Blue Dragon is another great RPG game that deserves it's flowers too,in some cases it was better than Lost Odyssey and was rated higher in multiple gaming magazines back then, while Lost Odyssey was given an 8 on Gameinformer Blue Dragon was rated a 9,I have both and love them very fun,but Blue Dragon is the better game imo, another forgotten gem was the Wario game on the Gamecube, that game was amazing and everyone should've been able to play it if they love platformers, there's lots of other great yet forgotten games and it's a shame most of us won't ever get to play them unless we use emulators lol
I played the HECK out of Virtual Fighter 1 in the arcade. Loved that game :) Also, it's funny how this video released just moments before the new Perfect Dark reveal trailer.
Besides having Knights, I had the demo Christmas Knights. It had a lot of replay value do to unlocking little silly things, and also being a Christmas themed level
1:30 small correction: FFXII wasn't the first time you could control summons in the open world. FFXI allowed summoners to control their summons in the open world. I personally never owned a Xbox 360, but I borrowed my brother's when I moved I move into an apartment and didn't have internet yet and gave it back once it was connected. So I never got to finish Lost Odyssey, but it left such an impression on me that I have hoped that it could get a PC release for over 10 years now.
i loved finding all the random characters for your hideout on Skies of Arcadia - Would change your abilities or stats when in ship battles or exploring. missed a few discoveries on dreamcast but 100% it on Gamecube remaster
the open-ness of FF12 is what does it for me. you can rack up a 300 kill combo easily. and walk endlessly from area to area once you've unlocked enough.
I love Perfect Dark, and it’s funny that this video came out the day they showed the trailer and gameplay for the new title. But literally no one saw the new Perfect Dark ever escaping development hell.
i suggest NES, robowarrior, dragon spirit the new legend, swords and serpents on genesis, kid chameleon, shining force 1, zero the kamikaze squirell ps1, the best game ever Brave Fencer Musashi, also jersey devil, Gekido, Croc legend of the gobos, Gex enter the Gecko, megaman legends ps2, Shining force EXA, start ocean till the end of time, grandia 3, dot hack infection, blam machine head
A list about forgotten masterpieces, yet once again Suikoden doesn't get any love. Suikoden was one of the first franchises to feature save importing, all the way back on the original Playstation. It's a game that featured 108 playable characters, featured wartime combat, had positioning in your party play a factor on how your team performed, featured a 6-person party system, and allowed you to build up your own base to take on the might of the Empire, of which you were the heir to. Characters die, and there is genuine weight for your choices. Despite all that, it's sequel, Suikoden II is EVEN MORE revered, and at the peak of it's cult classic status, had physical copies selling for over $500 USD. For all the talk people have about Chrono Trigger being a great game, having played both Suikoden and Chrono Trigger on the Playstation as a kid, and later as an adult on the PSP and PC respectively, Suikoden is the better game, unironically, IMHO, and is a game that deserves VASTLY more love than it gets. Hopefully when the Suikoden I & II Remaster finally drops, people will finally be talking about these games the way they deserve.
Unpopular opinion here. Planescape: Torment's were too obscure for its own good. Puzzles were mandatory back then but it was before UA-cam. Outside of Gamefaqs you'd have to shell out $25-30 for a strategy guide. That essentially doubled the cost of the game.
The only slight I could put on Perfect Dark was the visuals. You can tell they were just a little too ambitious for the N64 so they get the blurriness that Goldeneye didn't have
Soul Sacrifice Delta for the PlayStation Vita. Imagine an arcadey Monster Hunter clone with the aesthetics and narrative of Berserk/Dark Souls, and 10/10 art direction, world building, characters, voice acting, music, and gameplay. Similarly, Puppeteer for the PS3 is basically Sony's 10/10 try at the same general type of game as Balan Wonderworld and Princess Peach: Showtime!. And to continue on the JAPAN Studio train, the Gravity Rush series deserves way more love than it got, with 2 essentially being Spider-Sonic: Breath of the Yakuza's Odyssey.
Anachronox. If you haven't played it, imagine a Final Fantasy style turn based RPG set in a tongue-in-cheek satirical sci-fi universe (think Hitchhiker's Guide meets Red Dwarf meets Guardians of the Galaxy)
We all have opinions, of course, but I am a graphics lover and most of these are best left in the past for me, except for the last one. Perhaps the success of Baldur's Gate 3 will spur someone to completely update Planescape Torment. That would be an instant classic. I'm too old to initiate a major project or I would do it myself.
Loved the Virtua Fighter series....IV was definitely a winner all around, cept for whole SEGA aspect. lol "Perfect Dark" WAS also a WONDERFUL title!! Miss it. How many people remember "PARASITE EVE"? That game STILL rocks to this day! Yes. I have a copy or two. lol

Vanquish! A blazing fast sci-fi cover shooter by Platinum Games, absolutely oozing style. Originally only came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, was later ported to PC, but still remained fairly unknown.
Jess! I love watching your hosted videos!
Lost Odyssey was brilliant, but to me, "1000 Years of Dreams", the little collectible visual novels were even better than the main story. Honestly, each and every story I found moved me to tears.
Do you guys still have your Jessstation 2000?
The masterpiece here is your accent! Y’all have the best ones
Legend of Dragoon to me is a forgotten masterpiece, still my favorite game.
I love the passion for videogames that Jess emanates from her soul. Love it. 😍
Severance: Blade of Darkness is the forgotten Souls like game no one talks about. I love this game
Perfect Dark is an easy top 10 game of all time! I still play it on my Xbox One! It’s near perfect!
My underrated game is definitely Enslaved Odyssey to the West. Absolute masterclass gaming experience
Skys of Arcadia as ported to Game Cube a couple of years later. It is one of the games I want to have a sequel the most.
Thought about buying an Xbox just to play Last Odyssey again.
Thanks for the great gaming videos. Please keep em coming!
i loved finding all the random characters for your hideout on Skies of Arcadia - Would change your abilities or stats when in ship battles or exploring. missed a few discoveries on dreamcast but 100% it on Gamecube remaster
the open-ness of FF12 is what does it for me.
you can rack up a 300 kill combo easily. and walk endlessly from area to area once you've unlocked enough.
I love Perfect Dark, and it’s funny that this video came out the day they showed the trailer and gameplay for the new title. But literally no one saw the new Perfect Dark ever escaping development hell.
Knights Inn the dreams with a game that I absolutely loved, it is definitely one that needs a re-release
i suggest NES, robowarrior, dragon spirit the new legend, swords and serpents
on genesis, kid chameleon, shining force 1, zero the kamikaze squirell
ps1, the best game ever Brave Fencer Musashi, also jersey devil, Gekido, Croc legend of the gobos, Gex enter the Gecko, megaman legends
ps2, Shining force EXA, start ocean till the end of time, grandia 3, dot hack infection, blam machine head
I think dragon age origins is forgotten masterpiece because not many people talk about and not many new players have played it
Time splitters, haunting ground, the getaway.
Thank you for mentioning Skies of Arcadia
Recently got into lost odyssey and it had me in tears by the end of it. I loved it so much. 😭😭😭
God I loved Perfect Dark
This was a fun list!
You can tell they were just a little too ambitious for the N64 so they get the blurriness that Goldeneye didn't have
I kinda wish Suikoden 1 or 2 would have shown up on here. Such great storytelling. Legend of Dragoon would have been a great fit as well
Soul Sacrifice Delta for the PlayStation Vita.
Loved NiGHTs. Constantly chasing a better score with the controller made for it, on Saturn.
Skies of Arcadia absolutely needs a(nother) remaster.
Planescape: Torment is probably in my top 5 RPGs of all time along with the first Fallout
You are such an awesome host on here, thank you for the lists.
I played Skies of Arcadia Legends on the Gamecube back in the day and it was amazing
To this day, I consider Planescape Torment one of the best RPGs of all time. Right up there with Baldur's Gate 3.
Loved the Virtua Fighter series....IV was definitely a winner all around, cept for whole SEGA aspect. lol
"Perfect Dark" WAS also a WONDERFUL title!! Miss it.
How many people remember "PARASITE EVE"? That game STILL rocks to this day! Yes. I have a copy or two. lol
Power Stone This Dreamcast Game Deserves better heck I'll take a Robot Chicken sketch or a spot In Epic Rap Battles Of History "Edward Falcon Vs Captain Falcon" Epic Lloyd Nice Peter I just gave you an Idea good games lost to Time
Skies of Arcadia was absolutely amazing
