One of the worst parts of the tragedy of Davey Allison was that just a little bit earlier his brother Clifford had been killed in a racing accident. That family endured so much trauma and tragedy in such a short period of time. The thing with Neil Bonnet was he’d been warned by his doctors that one big crash quote “wouldn’t possibly be deadly- it WOULD be deadly.” He’d suffered a couple of pretty serious head injuries in his career and another one would be very bad. It was why he’d originally retired and become a commentator (a darn good one). He still went ahead with the plan… and this was the sad result.
We all had to write a letter to a famous person when I was in 5th Grade, I picked Ryan Newman. He was the only one that responded. He's been my favorite driver ever since. I thought I watched him die on live television in 2020. I still have a hard time watching that wreck.
That certainly would have made a fan for life out of me. The fact that he's the only one who responded means that he's automatically the coolest out of all of the celebrities written. Doesn't matter who they are or what they've done, they didn't write back, so they're not so cool.
Dale Earnhardts death in 2001 was the darkest day especially 9/11 which I know 9/11 isn’t a sport but it was a tragedy Dan Weldon’s death even though it’s indycar
4:18 that was also the first broadcasted full race without darrell. Whether he was on track, a race owner, or a broadcaster, he was always by or on the track.
I have been an avid fan of NASCAR since 1981. At the 2001 Daytona 500 Kyle Petty, Dale Jarrett, Matt Kenseth, Andy Houston, and Brett Bodine were all wearing HANS. Had Dale worn a HANS, had SAFER barriers, and "cocoon" seats, he may have survived, after Eric Jones crash, I believe he would have. Collectively as fans when we learned the details and heard from Kyle and DJ, we got upset and demanded safety upgrades. Since that terrible day at Daytona we've only lost one driver, Carlos Pardo Mexico Series KNOCK ON WOOD 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. We haven't had unity like that since 2001. So much tragedy great video. BTW, have you considered doing a stand alone video on the gruesome crash of Rodney Orr. It helped change broadcasting and delay as we say the horror on TV.
I still won't forget the 2004 Martinsville fall race when Jimmie Johnson won the race, but didn't get to celebrate it due to the tragedy of the 10 passengers of Hendrick Motorsports who were killed in the plane crash that day. Also when Dale Earnhardt was killed on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Those two memories I will never forget as the years go by.
1994 was a dark year in racing overall as over in F1, there was the tragic weekend at Imola where Roland Ratzenberger & most notably 3 time F1 champion Ayton Senna were killed. This is in addition to Rubens Barrichello, Pedro Lamy & Karl Wendlinger all being involved in crashes that injured them.
With the 2020 Daytona 500, I was working at FedEx at the time, and was happy Denny won, took a shower to get ready for work, then I heard Newman being taken to Halifax, and it then made me wonder to myself how bad it actually was, because watching from 03 onward, I've seen some violent wrecks, but they'd come out alright. And it was bittersweet for me too, because my dad had passed a few weeks before the race.
In a lifetime there are a few events that are one of those " do you remember where you were when you heard " I was sitting at home doing homework I was in 10th grade at the time.
During the broadcast, it felt a lot like the broadcast of the 2001 Daytona 500. It didn’t help that the commentators kept mentioning that an unresponsive Newman being taken to Halifax Medical Center, the same place they took Dale Earnhardt’s body to confirm his passing. When Preece flipped 11 times during the 2023 Daytona summer race, they never used the words “Halifax Medical Center,” and I think it’s because of the trauma around those words when they were used in 2001 and 2020.
blaney should of been booted for life. 0 excuses. just out to wreck for a W. and couldnt pull that off. since nothing happened president of nascar should of been sued as well. reall it shouldnt be nascar. should be the Ryan newman race weekend
Dude, that was f****** Hamlin's fault... Hey I'm one bumped the 2 of them while he was bumped drafting to dump in running at the finish. Hamlin was just trying to dump Blaney and newman at the same time and it fucking worked....
Bro, Newman's rear end got light. You can see when he got in front of Blaney, the tail of his car got away from him, plus at 200 mph, there was no way Blaney could have slowed down enough to avoid getting on Newman's bumper. It's a racing incident. He didn't turn him for the win. Some of you should actually watch the video sometimes, or learn what you're talking about. Edit: It's only now that I realize this was posted for bait. OP is still a massive idiot though
L. Dead wrong. Newman was slower by about 5+mph, and still tried to block even tho Blaney had momentum from a push via Hamlin. No wrong was done that day, just racing, and Ryan Newman would be the first to tell you as he’s said before in interviews.
These were before I ever became a fan, but they're still sad 😢

Shouldn't Ricky Craven be on that list? I thought it was both PPI drivers who were among those pioneering the HANS device in 2001.
