    I had one of those a few years ago in a Fusion. It had a harsh 3-4 and 4-3 down shift. It felt like the transmission was falling out of the bottom of the car. It was taken apart and ended up being the intermediate clutch. Ford replaced the entire trans-axle with a factory reman. The transmission was full of shredded metal. 64,000miles

      Those clutches do go bad a lot, even in the 4 speeds

    Could the Ford FNR5 5speed and its TCM be used in place of the Mazda FS5A-EL 5speed? I know the Dura 2.5 can replace a Mazda 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5. I'd like to keep a few more Mazdas on the road but Mazda transmissions are much rarer.

    Hello, i have a 2007 mazda 3 5sp automatic and i just replaced the reverse and 3 to 4 clutch packs and band. It fixed my forward gears but reverse is still slipping very bad. The car bearly moves in reverse. Do you think it could be a bad servo piston? Or a stuck shift solenoid? I can hear the solenoid buzzing when I put the gear shift into reverse. I also am not getting any codes or check engine lights or AT lights. Thank You.

    I like your opinion on this please. I have a 07 fusion with the 2.3l . I have this codes. P0732,p0734,p0744,p0751 and p0757. I did a transmission service and i replace the selenoid a and b and no change. Do you think i need a new transmission. When i did the transmission service i only saw a little bit of dust on the pan and magnet. Or do you think is the tcm on this things. Any help will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Hey Gary Ferraro,,,,I have a 08 fusion w/fn5r...I have had to replace the transmission apx 1 year ago and got a rebuilt one,and it performed excellent until one of the hoses came off the cooler!!!😒.any way I drove around 6 miles until it wouldn't go any further!!!..I fixed the line refilled it ,and it worked fine... nothing at all was damaged that I couldn't notice, any ways apx two months after that it all of a sudden would shifted 1 2 3 and no longer shifts to 4....and 123 seems to shift delayed now,and harder it seems...as I said,it is a newer one,but I'll do what I have to save it...my question is what should I be looking for ??? solenoid? clutch? everything???
    It through a code but I have not retrieved it yet...your videos are excellent,your very thorough!!if you have a few minutes to answer this,I surely will appreciate your thoughts! thanks Bill!

    Great video! I have a 07 Mazda 3 With a 2.3l fnr5 trans. I'm having a shudder in the 3-4 shift when hot, and I have dark fluid. My AT light is on, and I'm getting a po744 code.
    Tried clearing it with snap on scanner code cleared, but AT light remained on. Any ideas?

      3-4 shift shock under load is a TSB, there's some information on it around google, should save it while we still can. Doesn't happen when shifting manual and letting off throttle, and my lights are OK for now, but seems like I eventually will need to rebuild or replace it. Pretty stupid!

      And these are apparently in all Mazdas from like... 2002-2014. But at some point they started using a stronger material for the servo piston bore.

  • @ToolsOutsideTheBox
    @ToolsOutsideTheBox 5 років тому

    I need to do the 2-4 servo piston on a 4F27E. But that Northland tool, for the servo bore is a bit spendy for a DIYer. The same kit for the FNR5 is only about $100.
    Are they different sizes? Or can they be used interchangeably?
    Thanks for the great videos!

      The sleeve should be the same, there is only one servo piston

    Hey Gary - hoping you can help with a basic question .......
    I have a 2009 Ford Fusion SE, 2.3L 4cyl Automatic with the FNR5
    The situation:
    My owners manual says to use specific Motorcraft FNR5 transmission fluid (XT9QMM5) Three dealers however say that fluid has been superceded by Mercon V (XT5QMC). BUT ....the Motorcraft website clearly says within the Mercon V description, that it should NOT be used in FNR5 trans. (www.motorcraft.com/us/en_us/home/our-products/chemicals-and-lubricants/transmission-fluids.html). When I point out this discrepancy to the dealers, they have no explanation ....their computers say to use Mercon V.
    Do you who/what is correct? Use FNR5-specific fluid or Mercon V in this vehicle? What do you use? Thanks!

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  6 років тому

      k you will be fine with mercon V , you can use that or a premium snythetic fluid like castrol

    Hello I have a question, I have a 2007 Mazda 3s with a 5 speed auto transmission.. I want to buy a low miles transmission and I find one from a 2010 mazda 3.. from 2009 on its a different style but they both use the same FRN5 5speed transmission.. Only different I notice is the TCM model number is different.. Can a FRN5 from a 2010 work in mine if I change the TCM?

      I've done some research, and i can't say for sure that it will work, i called a couple of people and they were not sure, would you be purchasing this for a junk yard? I was thinking that you should give them your vin number and they should be able to tell if it will fit. Sorry for late reply shop is packed

    • @benb071780
      @benb071780 6 років тому

      Yeah it comes right back after I shift , before I would have to drive it for awhile it would do a heavy jerk/jolt and then the light would come back on. Some days it wouldn't even do it at all and would drive normal.

      What you can do is swap solenoids to see if the code moves, are you sure you replaced the correct solenoid?

    Don't ever get a car with this transmission in it. It's the biggest piece of shit Ford/Mazda has ever manufactured.
