Dolly wrote this for her TV partner, Porter Wagner, when she left their show. Elvis wanted to perform it, but his manager wanted rights to the song and Dolly refused. Smart gal. She's made $$$ off of Whitney's version. Dolly also took the song the top of the country charts in two different decades. In 2020, "I Will Always Love You" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Porter Wagner didn't want Dolly to leave though they fought a lot (and cared deeply for each other as he gave her her break in the music industry) so she wrote and performed this for him and he agreed it was ok for her to go as long as she'd let him produce the song and she did. The rest is history.

Elvis wanted the rights to every song he did. Smart business. Jerry Reed didn't give in though and Elvis still did his song "Guitar Man". First person that I heard of that did not give in to Elvis. Back to Dollly, Porter knew what he had with Dolly on his show, he wanted her to stay. Again, smart business. She was the beauty, the voice, the talent that was keeping that show going. Dolly is the greatest female singer alive right now. Top 10 song writer. Houston did it ok, but you can't compare it to Dolly, it's not fair to Mrs. Bobby Brown. It is like comparing a Cinnabon cinnamon roll with one from a great value walmart tube. The feelings show in Dolly's version. But some people like great value better, than Cinnabon and I am happy for them. I hope they get to taste Cinnabon some day. Until then enjoy what you enjoy. Dolly's sisters are good musicians too, I used to enjoy their Christmas Special. Stella in particular has a decent voice. God bless, have a wonderful rest of the year.

@@gwumpyolman If you look into this, it wasn't actually Elvis that asked for the rights, it was his manager. Elvis left all the business side of things to his manager. After he died the courts were shocked at how much Tom Parker took from Elvis.

Dolly writes songs practically every night and records them on cassette tapes and had written over 3000 songs by 1985. She says when she went back through the tapes years later, "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" were back-to-back on the same tape. That was a good night!

Two Things: 1) This isn’t Dolly Parton’s “version” of the song. It’s the original performance. Anyone else who sang it did a version of it.
    2) Dolly is *seated* the entire time. She’s sitting down and still hits every note. Not only that, but she glides effortlessly from singing to talking and then singing again.

About 2019, Dolly mentioned she'd found an old cassette (which she used to write songs on) & found I Will Always Love You & Jolene next to each other, on the same tape, meaning they were written very close together, likely within days of each other. "Everybody" has now turned "same time" into "same day." When pressed, Dolly will only agree "it's possible", but she is firm in saying she doesn't know (if they were written the same day).

About the time Dolly wrote this young Whitney was at work with her Mother, Cissy Houston who was one of Elvis’s backup singers. I remember that Whitney was in awe talking about Elvis. I don’t think she really knew just how good she was.
I love the songs Dolly wrote about what happened during her childhood like. Coat of Many Colours and Apple Jack. Dolly only has Dollywood to send free books now around the world to kids that don’t have any. She remembers being poor and how valuable she thought a book was. Last count she had sent over 3 million. She says Elvis wanted to record the song and his manager, The Colonel, tried to get her to sell him the rights to the song but, wisely, she would not sell so Elvis, unfortunately, did not get to record it! ..."Class of 76"...When ask what she thought about Whitney singing her song she said...I think she sings it perfect and every time she does it makes me lots of money! Every penny Dolly gets from the royalties of Whitney's version is donated to the inner city and poor areas of Memphis...

Dolly donated all of her royalties from Whitney's version to two black children's charities. She also puts preschool books in the hands of children all over the world including up here in Canada. Her heart is as big on the inside as the outside!

I know you guys loved Loretta Lynn so much. Dolly, though much younger than Loretta, was also born poor and part of a huge family. Dolly also has sisters that sing and her sister Stella had a short country music career. As Coal Miners Daughter was the story of Loretta's life - Coat of Many Colors is about Dolly's life as a child. If you get the chance to watch that movie it will give you more insight to Dolly and what a firecracker she has always been! Great reaction! Just for grins and giggles.. google hits that Dolly has written for other people. She also has a slew of movies she starred in in which the soundtracks were hit songs/albums for her. Thanks for this great memory.

This video was the first time Dolly performed "I will always love you". As someone else said Dolly wrote this song to tell Porter Wagner that she was leaving the show. This performance was her actually singing to Porter Wagner. She left the Porter Wagner Show on Feb.19, 1974.

It's not the same song, Dolly wrote it as a owed to mentor song. It was not a song about romantic love, as it was used in the movie the Bodyguard.

Hey Shawn and Mel, both Dolly and Whitney's versions were absolutely fantastic, but please check out Lucy Thomas' version; her vocals are nothing you have ever heard, just absolutely flawless! She is incredible! Her version of "Hallelujah" is the best out there, ever!

My first experience with this song was in the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas when she sang it to Burt Reynolds, I remember tabloid papers always shipping the two of them, tho they were both married, I was around 11 when the movie came out but didn't see it until 15 or so, adorable movie 😎💜

Dolly took all the royalties she received from Whitney doing this song and gave it to the inner-city committees. Dolly knows what it's like to be poor and struggling, because she grew up that way herself. She is awesome!

Love the look! Love the song too, and like you said, she performed it as a tender sacrament to horizons of setting love, where new suns will rise, and love is re-nude, I mean renewed. It's like the pretty good book says: Everybody loves themselves some Dolly Parton.

I remember, back in the early '90s, before this song, and the movie, came out, It was announced that Whitney was going to cover this song, just a verbal announcement that it was coming... There were some people that were up in arms that Whitney was going to destroy Dolly's song. Some were absolutely FURIOUS at the concept. Was not a huge group of people, but they were there, with their mouths running...
Then the song was released... Then those people shut up. Some of them admitted they were wrong. Others denied they ever said anything. I am sure some even tried to take credit... Whitney completely humbled them all, while Dolly laughed all the way to the bank.
