Mark Knophler asked him if he wanted to join Dire Straights. Unfortunately he had just signed a record contract and couldn't.
Then after Glen Fry passed away and the Eagles wanted to go on tour the first guy they called was Vince Gill.
The dude is a epic guitar player!

Quite a few years ago, I saw Vince in concert at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. During his set, he covered The Eagles' ballad, "I Can't Tell You Why." I've seen more live shows than I can count and that is one of the top two or three songs I have ever had the good fortune to hear. " Stunning' doesn't begin to do it justice.

Vince has a mindblowing vintage guitar collection. Millions of dollars worth of pre-war Martin and Gibson acoustics. Alot more Martins than Gibsons though. I'm the same way. I'll choose my D-28, over the fanciest Gibson acoustics, any day of the week. As far as mass produced guitars go, none come close to the build quality, and sound of a Martin.

Sadly, the "short list" of Country pickers who might be considered "great" is pretty short. Vince has the looks, the voice AND the guitar skills to be in a class by himself, with a possible in Brad Paisley joining him. Both of them can produce hits without resorting to joining in with others to enhance their careers. That said, Vince joining the Eagles is NOT a "step down" for him.

Had to chime in here. Kudos for recognizing awesome tele playing. Between the 1&4 there a lot of interchangeable chops, creating minor major tonality. One thing. I may be wrong BUT not sure he’s has a bender in that guitar. - oh that ain’t nothin but blues. Just a different flavor of it.

You have only touched the surface of Country Music/ Bluegrass. The well is very deep. Some of the legends are Roy Clark(as you discovered), Glenn Campbell, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins. It's amazing when they play together. You can see they loved & enjoyed playing together. Others include Jim Stafford, Bill Monroe, Charlie McCoy(harmonica), Roni Stoneman, Buck Trent, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. They did the theme song for The Beverly Hillbillies tv show. The tv show "Hee Haw" is a great place to find them. You can ck them out just for yourself.
