If these people were poor they’d be called hoarders. Overconsumption TikTok is an example of “what’s classy if you’re rich but trashy if you’re poor.” Hoarding
So true omg, and interestingly enough I feel as though some people who didn’t grow up with a lot of financial resources/literacy tend to over-consume. But this likely comes from traumatic experiences in childhood (ie not having enough ‘things’ in general)
Thank you for putting into words what I was feeling. All those organizers with items on the counter visually look like mine when things are not so good.
Yup. I have been slowly purging through all of the stuff my mother accumulated during her lifetime. People have asked if it was a hoarding situation. The only reason someone wouldn’t call it hoarding is because she had enough space in her home to spread it out without it being too noticeable. Still hoarding though. When you see those giant walk-in closets of celebrities with two rooms full of clothes-more than any human could wear in an entire year-also hoarding. The difference is those folks can afford to pay someone to organize and do collections management, and/or have enough space to spread it out so no one calls a mental health professional. 😆
No when I restock at work I feel so satisfied. Like half of these creators would feel so fulfilled from doing inventory and stocking I’m not even joking.
The guest bathroom thing drives me crazy, because if I'm sleeping at a friend's (for a night or for a week or whatever), I'll bring my own toiletries? Like, I have my favorite brands, products that work for me, and also I'd never expect for these things to be provided for me. I'd expect there to be toilet paper and soap and towels.
Nah, that’s the only one that’s actually fair. We live at least 2 hours from everyone we know. We have people staying over our home weekly. We keep extra things for them in case hey forgot something/ended up staying over after being unsure if they were going to and were tired. 🤷🏻♀️
@@sajh881 but it’s a lie? Fair point or not, the videos themselves are disingenuous because they ain’t stocking that bathroom for guests at all. It’s just a story so they can display their sponsored PR tush wipes and endless touchlands. No one is actually using it, all that stuff is either rotting in the draw or thrown out after the camera stops recording.
I mean, I’ve forgotten stuff before when I’ve stayed with friends, and vis versa, but then we just share stuff? Like… I can come use your toothpaste. You can use my shampoo…
I have a friend whose parents often took things away from her growing up, so she overpacks when she comes to hang out. And sometimes she does overstock her skin care cabinet. She's aware of it though.
I think the "wanting your house to look like a store" came from shows like MTV Cribs and the Kardashians, when celebs showed their walk in closets which were designed so store-like. People saw it as aspirational and associated it with wealth, which they then wanted to emulate themselves. Also, propping things up like in a store is a tidy way to put the items on display. They love the stuff they hoard, so they want to see it, I guess. As for that phenomenon on TikTok, it makes sense that the stuff is put up that way because in the end, it IS a store when they make commission.
44 yr old straight male here. Obviously probably not ur target demo. I gotta say, your videos are GREAT. They're researched. You cite things when needed. And they're entertaining
She really is a master at youtube!! I can’t stand when other creators talk about something like I already know what it is. Explain yourself!!! She does very well at that AND she always says what we are all thinking. She is not going to sugarcoat things and I love that!
now exactly!! When that mom just put a bunch of junk food and CANDY for her daughter. and i understand they're sponsored but it seems like they can't even drink regular water. Regular water is way more healthy for you than whatever supplement or vitamin you put in it
40:13 ‘or am I trying to buy those childhood memories back’ … dang Kiki you were COOKING with that one. I think you’ve covered this topic with more care and nuance than I’ve seen any other creator. The kindness and compassion you extend to strangers gives me some hope in society. Cheers :)
The lady saying she got her sister’s social security number in order to buy an expensive purse because she has little money is one of the most batshit insane things I’ve heard
It’s nuts. This is the first time I’ve actually considered shopping addiction to be as influential over a person’s decisions as more commonly discussed addictions such as substances or gambling. Attempting to commit fraud over a purse is wild, but I’ve know people who have done much crazier things for drugs, alcohol, sex, scratch off tickets, etc. This is peak shopping addiction. To the point you have to feed the beast daily to get that monkey off your back. Just one more hit…except in this case, the hit is a $500 purse. 🙃
Right? You’ve gotta sneak outside food into the theater inside your backpack. 🙃They aren’t going to let you waltz into the movies with a smorgasbord of cookies and the entire McDonald’s menu strapped to your Stanley cup under the guise of drinking water. “Outside water is allowed in the theater.” Ma’am, there’s half the grocery store hanging off that cup.
The worst are the freakin "restock my Stanley with me" or "get ready with me for the day", then it's just clips of them showing off their house and whatnot. These fools actually have time to get ready to go do a 10-minute errand. It is SO useless but like anything for clout I guess.
I've been alive for 53 years, and never have I realized that the root cause of all my troubles was that the shape of my ice cubes did not match the shape of my beverage containers! Now that I've discovered this wonderful secret to success and happiness, my life is going to be so much better, I just know it!!!
As a clumsy person I feel this. And my anxiety would be through the roof with it sitting on the table. I know I'll whack it over. I do it with coffee haha
I remember reading that, in Germany, the insult "hobbyless" was a thing for a while and it honestly applies so hard to these people. Buying accessories for your Stanley is not a hobby. A hobby doesn't need to be amazing or super creative or anything but buying stuff for the sake of buying stuff is not a hobby. Please, just find something to fill your time with that isn't browsing amazon et al until you start thinking you need a snack bowl for your cup.
I am genuinely suprised that Stanley Cups are still a trend. Most trends come and go so quickly, and I was shocked to see people still fighting over them. I thought they would have gone out of style already.
Yeah, same. I don’t have TikTok so I don’t know what’s trendy there until I watch these videos. I figured this trend was over since I never see someone in my town with one anymore. And if stores post in our towns group about having the new colours all I see is people complaining about the prices. They are like $50-70 CAD here.
I was hooked to these kind of videos during lock down and trust me it is so scary. I never realized but i was buying stuff i never needed just for that aesthetic look. I am glad that i worked on it. Thank you for bringing this topic.
This, but also, almost everything that I need I probably already have except for food and household products. If I don’t have it, my dad likely does since my mom left him with a house filled to the brim of pretty much every item you can think of. She was the 80s and 90s version of the TikTok overconsumer. Someone should have taken her damn credit cards away. 😆 If I need something, I don’t have to go to the store…I just go to my parents’ house. There’s like a 90% chance they have one if I don’t.
As someone with a financial planning degree I see so many bad spending habits in overconsumption. “It’s their money” of course, doesn’t mean I can’t notice poor decisions, sacrificing long term growth for fancy behind wipes and purses.
I used to struggle with impulse spending so much. I'm not perfect but I do way better now. Hubby is trying but still spends too much then stresses about money so he spends more
@itseIv part of it was realizing that having less of something made me like it more. Have you ever had some self care thing become a chore? It's because you did it all the time and so it felt less luxe. I was eating so much candy for example that it stopped tasting as good and it wasn't even the treat I actually like. I want cake. So instead I made a cake once a week and cut it into "a slice I would enjoy eating " sized pieces and put them in individual containers. I gave the rest to friends or coworkers if i felt safe to. Then I let myself have a piece every day. I didn't stop for the morning donut or the 2 afternoon king sized candy bars because who needs lesser treats when the thing you love is waiting for you. At the same time, I worked on my emotions with my therapist and added in a gym class so I felt human connection. Eventually I wanted less and less of it so now it really is just a treat but if I was still eating a piece a day it genuinely would be fine because I wasn't eating in excess anymore. Perfection is the enemy of progress
There is not nearly enough hate in this video so far for the MINI TIC TAC BOTTLES. the plastic to product ratio is making my blood absolutely boil. Tic tacs are already small to begin with I cannot fathom this
Literally every time they pop up in these vids I'm like WTFFFF are we doing why??? 😭😭 so damn stupid and I'm glad somebody said this lol I was going crazy 😂
I'm so glad you mentioned the scarcity mindset. A lot of times overconsumption is a symptom of an addiction to shopping which develops due to past traumas. Humans are constantly seeking security and when one purchases "backups", it artificially scratches that itch to feel secure and safe. It's crazy to think that our desire for emotional safety can sometimes be hidden underneath a pile of body scrubs or hand sanitizers. But of course, there is hope for all of us as we continue to learn and grow toward feeling complete in healthier ways.
When I see some pale-ass beige-y or gray sleeve pulled down almost covering their hand full of overly manicured nails, I start cringing... Immediately. Add the tappy tappy and crinkle and it literally makes my skin crawl.
Agree 100%! All the crinkling and tapping and squeezing and having their microphones turned up so it picks up all of that irritating noise even more... I can't scroll away fast enough! Why are we doing this????????? Side note, I think the Woobles crochet kits are cute but I SWEAR I thumb those UA-cam ads down SO FAST. That squishy crinkly sound makes me want to lose it. Certainly doesn't make me want to buy their product so why is everyone doing this?
They're so unnecessary I get it lol. My mom is an over buyer. She loves to shop and over buy, but I've been trying to gently show her how this useless 💩 kills the planet. Shes open minded thankfully 😂
Out of curiosity, is there anything inherently wrong with flushable wipes in general or is it just the fact that these are individually wrapped and have a stupid name?? I personally find using dry paper to clean myself ineffective and kinda gross (no offense) so I’ve always opted for flushable wipes when possible but would never buy these individually wrapped ones or anything. If anything, I put a couple of my wipes from home in a baggy that stays in my purse if I really don’t want to have use toilet paper in public. I’d have a bidet in a second if I could but unfortunately I still live with family and the men in the house are of the belief that bidets would take their backend virginity or something, so I guess I’ll have to wait on that until I’m on my own.
@ They actually are known to clog pipes and can cause serious plumbing issues. From my understanding they don’t break down like TP does and it can cause problems in pipes and also if you have a septic tank. Plumbers don’t recommend using them because of those reasons.
@ wow thanks for the reply. Guess I should push for that bidet then. lol I just don’t understand how they’re so much worse. The wipes I use at least literally feel like wet toilet paper and break apart with very little effort. I wonder what exactly makes them not break down the same way as toilet paper.
Re the childhood thing that leads to overconsumption is true. My husband was never told he could not have anything as a child. Whatever he wanted, he got and its followed him into adulthood. In terms of gaming consoles, games, trainers (sneakers, im from the UK)....he has to have it. Whereas my childhood was different, I got toys and things but not all of the time and was encouraged to save my pocket money for things i really wanted if it wasnt near my birthday or xmas. I personally hate having a lot of stuff around, this year i have worked towards being minimal, having a capsule wardrobe and using what i have. Xx
In defense of the “shared toothbrush” person, it’s possible they meant they share the electric toothbrush BASE with their husband, but they each have their own replaceable/interchangeable toothbrush head. At least I hope that’s what they meant…
Have you seen the Casemate bag one with the lady who is practically beating the bag. It's like a blend of the asmr and that lady who does the school teacher videos where she yanks her purse around. It's like a really really bad parody. That on sends me over the edge.
I think you are correct when you say that a lot of people who over consume have a touch of childhood issues in the closet. They likely grew up with little or felt shame for not having the “cool expensive stuff” that their friends maybe had. I never thought about it that way but you hit the nail on the head.
True my mom grew up Buddhist and with a strict vegan diet where my gran locked the cabinets. My mom was never overweight my gran was an almond mom. My mom over compensated and I was a chunky middle schooler. Thank god our HS had a free gym.
My problem with overconsumption of beauty products and clothes came from my parents not letting me having the trendy stuff I wanted as a kid cause they thought it was stupid to spend so much money on brands when you can get a lot more for less. I got bullied at school for this and when I got adult money I went crazy. However, I’m working very hard on it since I’ve discovered the reason why I’m like this.
I started throwing things away because the clutter was causing me anxiety and depression. I never had a problem like this, but I held onto stupid things for sentimental reasons that really didn't exist. The second I started minimizing my life and the things around me, I felt so much better. I felt like things were clean, more calm, and it helped my mental health tremendously.
I agree. Earlier this year I started decluttering a lot of makeup and skin care items. The amount of expired things that I had to throw away made me so mad at myself.
I feel like the "that girl" trend has crossed a line in the same vein as "nice guys". If you have to tell us you're "that girl" or a "nice guy" you're not "that girl" or a "nice guy".
I didn't realize "that girl" was a thing people WANTED to be. It sounds to me like an insult lol, or at the very least like something negative. "That girl" is the one other people whisper and giggle about because she's the only person who thinks she's any kind of cool.
The only "accessory" for a cup (Stanley) that makes sense to me are the little straw covers. And that's only because I'm paranoid about a fly or bug crawling down my straw!!😅😅
I like them because I don’t need to worry about my straw getting dirty at work! I do like the boots too but these videos are insane. Even though they’re relaxing/satisfying they’re so out of touch
I totally agree about the nostalgia part of overconsumption. Trying to "heal" my inner child led me to become over $40k in debt. Please regularly check in with yourself and ask yourself why, why do you need this or more importantly, can I live without this? It's also important to be kind to yourself and show yourself grace. Thank you so much for your well researched vids, love them so much 💙
I go to therapy to heal my inner child. It's not cheap either, but it's been such a great help! And the better I feel, the less often I need to have a session, so it actually tapers off.
I got over that by like killing my inner child instead of listening to that spoiled fucking brat who had absolutely horrible taste in everything and decided to like fully embrace the passage of time and how I am so thankful that I am not that person anymore like thank god I am not that girl anymore Pretty much the only thing you were right about was Taylor Swift being a good pop star
100% I saw on Twitter a while back a video of Cardi bs daughter lunch for school. She’s like 6? Or 7? She had all the sugary drinks, sugary cheap snacks and junk food that could fill a large lunchbox. If I remember correctly Twitter went wild. She’s got how much $ and her child isn’t eating organic, healthy foods? But she has her child carry a Birkin from Hermes? The priorities are all out of wack…
IKR ?!?! I’m showing my age here, but we used to take a sandwich, a piece or two of fruit, and maybe a Little Debbie snack in our lunchbox, and buy milk at school… 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
as a chronic migraineure and fragrance sensitive person, i could not go near some of these people’s bathrooms! also, maybe we should start shaking for how they’re environmental menaces for all the mini packages. the individually wrapped makeup wipes, mini tic tacs, tiny everything, it’s so much unnecessary single use plastic!
Since I saw the Liquid IV in several videos - just want to point out that unless you are doing strenuous exercise, sweating a lot, in the heat, etc. an average person does NOT need to be consuming electrolyte beverages in this way, and certainly not just to sit on the couch and watch a movie. I think people have gotten the impression through marketing that electrolytes are like "healthier water" or just taste good, but that is not the case - they're designed for athletes or to replenish nutrients AND SALT from excessive sweating. And even in those cases, having more than one serving per day can be dangerous bc it can throw off your electrolyte balance which can cause serious health complications - so enjoy them if you want, but please do your research about whether it's right for you before consuming them, instead of just going based off the ads!
Very much this! I have POTS, so my doctor has recommended I consume a much higher amount of sodium and water than what the average person needs. I keep Liquid IV in my purse the way grandmas always keep Werther's caramels in theirs lol. But most people do not need to be drinking electrolyte beverages all the time. I don't view them as objectively "healthy" or "unhealthy," and more like an OTC pain reliever or cold medicine. For example, cold medicine might be make you feel better when you're sick, but it's not a multivitamin you want to take every day "just because."
@@Sweet_Dee that's a really good way to think of it! and i do like drinking liquid iv/other electrolyte bevs - i have them for after my harder/sweatier workouts where i know i need to replenish and it really does help me recharge. but i don't need it on days where i'm just chillin at home watching youtube lol
When I was anaemic and almost bedridden, I had to go to hospital for an iron infusion but my condition was so bad they gave me electrolytes before they could treat me. So I understand how electrolytes work now. If people drink them for no reason they can’t get rid of the stubborn visceral fat that accumulates in their body.
@@moustik31 I think most adults realize this is for content purposes only. Even if teenagers watched this most couldn’t afford doing this type of over consumption.
One of my life rules is to make sure that things that separate me from the ground/floor must be good quality...comfortable shoes, safe tires on the car and a good bed. So, yeah, get a dang bed frame!
@@renataughsome “asmr” is nice and helps with anxiety but all these tiktok videos are literally just advertisements. They are all trying to sell you shit.
The Stanley ones with food piss me off because if we’re being real the only reason they get away with putting all that shit in their cup is because based on their aesthetic they’re assumed to be skinny. Imagine if a bigger person “packed” their Stanley with four cookies, a slice of cake, and an entire candy bar. The comments would look very different.
It's funny how "under-consumption" is a trend to some people whereas to many people that is a lifestyle that isn't a choice at all. That's just how they have to live to survive, using what they have and very often not being able to buy what they want, or even need. I'm glad that this is something that is being discussed and considered though. Great video, thank you!
It's a fucking insult to people who actually have to watch how much they spend, but if making it "trendy" is an effective way to encourage modest consumption, then by all means they should keep doing it.
@@courtykatI like it, because it helps me feel normal- and to be fair, in this economy it is normal. The under-consumption creators I've seen typically share budget and recycling hacks, which I find useful.
Just a note on the shared toothbrush: being an electric one, I think she means they share it because you can just change the tip and not have two handle/motor parts. I had a friend from childhood who did that and her whole 4-person family shared the motor. If this is not the case, well, then I subscribe to everything you said hahaha
@@ipuke_glitter yeah, especially considering these toothbrushes are like $60, the cheapest electric toothbrush at my Walmart is like $39.99 (not counting the kid ones or knockoff ones that dont have changable heads) ive seen them be up to like $120 and stuff too
My husband and I each have our own electric toothbrush, but if you’re swapping heads and only sharing the motor it’s sanitary. It’s not like the motors touches your mouth.
My husband and I share the motor but have different brushes. Not because we have to save money but because we don't deepthroat the handle and we clean it when we're done.
I just found you and this video spoke to me…. You are so lovely- you put yourself in people’s shoes and also speak on how it is fun to watch some of these. I recently had a pretty big surgery the week before my 40th and being at home…. I started to order things. I wanted to go back to work to avoid my emotions of a hysterectomy… long story short, I have a great job and my own home… but, I quickly realized I was buying cute things and beauty products way too much to fill a void… you helped me kinda see maybe some reasons why! Thank you! Subscribed and will watch more 😊
My question is in our economy right now the bread and peanut butter is EXPENSIVE and gasoline don’t even get me started HOW are these people affording this type of products at this much quantity?!?! Is it because tik tok pays them????
Yes, once you get to a certain amount of followers, you get sent stuff for free. You can also request products from companies and they will send them to you for free as long as you make a video promoting it. Then you get a cut of the profit from sales. They can afford to have all this stuff because they don’t pay for it. So they get all the stuff for free + profit, while we get all the stuff and debt. They get richer through every sale while the consumer is still living pay-check to pay-check.
It’s credit card debt most likely. They’re not budgeting, they’re just putting it on cards that they don’t have the money to pay. If you watch Caleb hammer, you see how the average American spends more than they have on BS. So yeah, it’s credit card debt unless these people are getting paid to overconsume/are sent the product for free. It’s certainly encouraging the viewers to go into credit card debt for the products they’re influenced to buy.
While yes they do get promo ect, they still have to pay taxes on everything they receive. Furthermore, a huge amount of influences are in terrible debt
@greasi yeah, the bit about them being in debt needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Sure, pr and money from sponsorships etc help, but a LOT of these people are deep in the throes of a spending problem and probably hiding some dire financial straits with all these purchases.
I remember when Hyrdo Flask was the popular bottle to have. I got a knock off on Amazon called hydro cell and have been using it since. Works great and it was like 20$
I bought a ton of the “purse restock” items when I got my first bag 2-3 years ago and I don’t even think I’ve ever even used all of the stuff that I got. The fact that some people restock on that stuff WEEKLY absolutely baffles me
What I was thinking. Replacing things during supermarket shops is one thing, but having to regularly restock anything in your house like they do in these videos is strange
yeah how many guests do they host? and they have to be making good money because all those tiny stuff are EXPENSIVE. makes my personal bathroom look like barebones lol
@@ginagrubb2939 that’s what I’m saying!! I bought mini bottles from target like 3 years ago and just refill them when I go places. I thought that was the norm 😭
One thing that has been immensely freeing for me? I am on palliative care and finally got sick enough I had to step away from my clinical career, so I got rid of nearly everything and bought an RV. I have to really think about what I want, how beneficial it is, longevity, and where it will live. I’ve always been one to save money up for a purchase and choose a high quality item that will last me longer, possibly serve more than one purpose, not fall into gimmicks, which has definitely reduced consumerism and eco footprint. Also, buying quality and keeping that item for longevity saves money in the long run, is usually elevates above trends, and sometimes becomes a generational item! I have a tiny 5x5, temp controlled storage unit for books, storage tubs where we can swap out seasonal clothing, micro holiday decor, document safe, my specialty cooking things I may need because I still like cooking when I’m well enough, tools, that stuff. I live light and experience as much as I can!
When I was a kid I had to stay at a domestic violence shelter and you go there with nothing but the clothes on your back (sort of an emergency situation if you get me) so they provide toiletries and some other basic items. Just an idea for people that want to horde stuff. Maybe donate to places like that.
Most of the time they don't accept a once used or opened item. At least in The Netherlands they are verrrry strict. It's sad because 90% of the products can be reused
@@IrisvanIersel hopefully the algorthm does't take down this coment, but it's better like that, imagine what "people" could do to an opened product without you noticing, especially when it comes to situations like this where many "animals" are looking for revenge
Whenever we would travel, we would snag all the hotel bathroom products and donate them to our homeless shelter when we returned. I mentioned it in class once and my teacher started doing it also.
I actually gasped when I saw all of those shampoos and body washes in the shower 😭😭😭 THEYRE GONNA EXPIRE BEFORE YOU CAN USE HALF OF THEM WHAT ARE YOU DOING
Most of these ladies suffer with depression and won't shower until they need to make a video of how they stay clean.. wait they don't shower that day either. Lolz.
My two best friends come to visit every year from Mexico. I always ask them not to bring any toiletries to have an easy go through TSA but also my opportunity to gift them with goodies that they start using right away. We even give each other pajamas. They do the same for me as well. I get them things on clearance, sales. But they come and take them I don’t accumulate stuff. And I definitely ONLY do this for them. The rest of my guests get toilet paper, hand soap and clean towels. This overconsumption is getting ridiculous. I love your content so much.
Lived in Mexico for 7 years and 100% Mexico is like a fancy toiletries wasteland. 😂 Also caught me so off guard that TP is scented lmao. But I get you l, when my 3 SILs visit I get excited to pamper them and love to do mini kits of korean skincare, and the like.
Yeahhh I’m not from America and I was just wondering - is this a cultural thing? What kind of “guests” are they hosting any way? If I were to stay at somebody else’s place, I might “expect” them to have basic shampoo and body wash, but I would totally be bringing my own skincare, makeup, even hair conditioner if I’m not sure if they personally use it. I don’t think anyone would expect to have all toiletries provided to them just because someone lends you a room. Plus, most people have very specific brands/products they are used to, so it’s just more cost effective and convenient for you to bring them yourself…? Is that abnormal in America…?
@@SilverlinedViolano this is not a part of our culture and If it becomes normal we’re screwed. Like most other countries when you go somewhere you are expected to bring what you need for yourself 😂😂 what’s in this video is so exaggerated and overly extreme. I must say though, I feel like Americans are the only people participating in this bullshit 😂😂 our overconsumption is definitely getting out of hand. That bathroom restock is NOT normal tho
My hot take is that if you’re buying all these themed accessories and whatnot for a Stanley or whatever - start collecting dolls. What you want is to collect something and dress it up. Scratch that itch and then it won’t pop up everywhere else
You want to play pretend and that’s okay but playing pretend in real life if wasteful, impractical, and expensive. Play with dolls or something, it’s fine
@@Shushu-sp5ke well I think anyone can do things in excess, and it’s not inherently wrong or bad. And collecting is over consumption to a degree, but usually it’s only that item. A psychological issue with this is that we are now treating everyday items as collectible, so it means that people will come up with every random thing to claim you “need” for it. AND we lose the reason why those things are made anyway (it’s much easier to make 20 shades of water bottles that people “HAVE to have” than create something that is meant to be collected and therefore only has, say 5 versions released each year). People who collect dolls are way more intentional in their collection. So while yeah overconsumption is a problem, I think the psychology behind it and how it continues to come up with new ways to shift our mentality to see life through capitalism is really important to remember here.
My son is at daycare. This is the first day I've had alone in my first and new apartment. I'm going to lay in my bed. I just took a shower and I'm going to eat snacks. Living my best fn life.
literally the motivation behind the guest bathroom restock is to flaunt wealth like “not only can i buy these expensive brands. i can buy them with the purpose that I don’t use them”
something that has really helped me has been taking inventory of everything i have (clothes, makeup, decor etc) and then making a list of the things i want/don’t have. if it’s been on my list for a while and i still want it i can purchase it.
The guest bathroom thing…who goes to someone’s house as an overnight guest and doesn’t pack their own toiletries??? I forget stuff once in a while but not the whole damn bag. This is crazy
Also, why don’t they just have full size bottles for them to use? I can understand mini toothpastes and deodorants, but other than that why can’t you put a regular shampoo, conditioner, and mouth wash in there with some paper cups?
I have sensitive skin, therefore i'm taking and using my own cosmetics. I might use toothpaste and micellar water if I forget my own. So much plastic it makes me angry
This video was incredible. I think the most impactful video of yours that I've viewed and otherwise. So honest and hardhitting. You have prompted me to completely rethink my spending and my plans to purge. You are a Rockstar! Thank you.❤
I’ve had TikTok for a long time. Never had these videos. Only had homesteading stuff, animal videos and recipes. It really is what you loook for. I uninstalled it anyway because doom scrolling is bad even when it’s not inherently toxic content. But yeah I never got this brain rot shit
Before overconsumption TikTok there was overconsumption UA-cam. I used to love watching people’s insane makeup collection videos back in the late 2000s/early 2010s and get so jealous. It’s all a cycle lol
Idiocracy was not just a movie but a real look into our future. My friend and I love watching your videos and laughing with you at the absurdity of all the shit happening online.
Agreed it certainly took me by surprise. When hydro flasks were big it was max bracelets and hella sticker. Ya know, casual. All of this random trash is so over the top.
Stuff like replacement caps and straws make a lot of sense since then if the original breaks, you can get a new one for cheap, or in the case of straws just have some extras. idk why someone would need to put their food on their cup though. Surely it is more annoying than putting the cup to the side.
To your point of spending money on experiences rather than things, there's a saying I've heard before and I feel it applies here: "Look at all the things you own, and all you've got is a list. Look at all the things you've done and you've got a story."
The mini version of tic-tacs baffle me...there's like 4 pellets in there! The original size is already small enough to fit their lil Stanley backpack pouch
I totally agree that there can be a backstory. My dad grew up in rather poor family, with lots of children, completely different times. They didn’t have fancy stuff, had food on their table but nothing special. Now my dad is over-consuming food. When he shops he tends to buy way more than we can eat. We had so many discussions about it but there is something in him that just makes him buying more and more just to keep the fridge completely full. I feel that older generation had to be smarter with money and didn’t allow kids much and now those kids are grown ups with money and they want to finally be in a power of getting whatever they want.
This is exactly what I was going to comment! I feel like the over consumption comes from a scarcity mindset. I used to see this on tv years ago where people would buy things in bulk and would pretty much have stores in their garage. Like the amount of things they bought would be enough to last them in an apocalypse, and they would just restock, so they never really consumed everything. I find it just so crazy. They get a false sense of security from it
My mom is a hoarder, growing up in a similar situation. I think it’s a mental thing that compensates for their childhood. I’m still trying to understand her and I’m sure it’s not an easy thing to deal with.
@@ae7645 I agree. I see some stuff like that with me - we always had money but my parents knew the value of dollar. I dreamt about all the toys but they were rather expensive in Poland. Now I’m a grown up with great job and I buy lots of Lego sets. Do I need it? No. Do I feel like I’m fulfilling those dreams I used to have? Hell yeah.
…that explains my parents so much. my mom grew up in a family of 10, struggling to feed them all and now she buys way too much, and my dad grew up in a family of 7 with the same issue but he has problems throwing expired things away now
As someone who has short arms so sleeves always cover my hands it drives me nuts when people force their sleeves over their hands like this.. its not practical and it's annoying 😅
Your reactions to this are so funny! But so real! Just watched the Netflix documentary about overconsumption and it just makes me mad. I used to play outside as a kid with no shoes and rocks in my pocket… now kids Christmas lists are more than my salary and we’re all doom scrolling to look for the next new thing 😢 great video.. really makes it all look so silly and sad!
As an ADHD dopamine seeker, I love shopping so much. I definitely have an unhealthy spending problem. My husband sat with me recently and had me read from my bank account so he could total it up, and gave me the amount I'd spent in the last two weeks, I was horrified. It adds up, one thing here, two things there, oh this is on sale, I love this color, boom an entire paycheck is gone. You lose track of it and it slips away from your control. Maybe you're getting the dopamine from buying, or maybe it's for the validation from others. It doesn't matter, it's a mental health issue that needs addressing that way, you can't just talk your way out of it. "I'll do better" is a great start but it's going to take more. I'm on that journey right now.
Amen! ❤ good luck babe! This resonated a lot with me. The doom scrolling, out of boredom or dopamine. We need to work on being Grateful for what we already have!
What’s extra frustrating about the Stanley target fights, is that I bet a majority of these people who are grabbing multiple bottles are going straight home to list them on EBay for hundreds of dollars
Collecting multiples of something that is meant to be reused for many, many years, is so odd no matter how people want to spin it. There are so many things to collect, and they choose cups?? Only because it's trendy too, not because they are passionate about it.
I always wonder if they hope that these Stanleys are gonna gain somewhat of an collectors worth some day :) It's the only way my brain can wrap around this stupidity...
@keeftopia Yep. I love my Hydroflasks and I still have a few of them in different sizes from before they became popular. I do have to say with those I do like the boots as I'm clumsy and would drop my bottles a lot. The boots would keep me from denting the bottoms.
And these are the same people who trash boomers for having multiple sets of beautiful dishes or Lladro figurines. They get the same joy from looking at those useless beautiful Lladros at that generation gets from looking at body scrub or cups.
I heard someone say this is Hoarders:Pinterest version…. And that is a true statement. They’re hoarders. Plain and simple. And that woman packing her daughter’s Stanley with all of that junk… that’s child abuse. Just sick. No kid should be eating that.
How HEAVY must those Stanley’s be to carry around with all the crap on it?! I hate carrying mine with just a drink in it. And god forbid it tips over!!!
36:52 My guest shower has one large bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. There are also a couple towels and extra toilet paper rolls under the sink. That’s it. You’re welcome. lol 😂
Exactly! Most people have their own personal preferences of what toiletries works for them. Those restocking videos are only for the influencers aesthetic and not their guests.
This is my favourite take on over vs under consumption. A lot of other videos I’ve watched will say things like: you only need 3 pairs of shoes or having more than say 4 mugs is wasteful and unnecessary. It’s comforting to see a more ‘normal’ perspective from someone that’s not main focus is on minimalism and/or environmental issues so thank you :)
Honestly, don’t we think most videos like “restock the guest bathroom” are filming these and then returning as much of these products as they can? Target insiders, let us know.
I don't get the whole guest bathroom thing. When I travel I like to take my own products. Why do a need a bathroom stocked with all that stuff? Give me some clean towels and maybe some soap (although my fiancé likes to bring his own soap).
Yes! And if I’m somehow at a friend’s place with no toiletries, why can’t my friend and I go to the store so I can buy what I need or borrow my friend’s stuff with permission? Wasting money on tons of little tiny bottles is stupid, just buy as needed.
@@aprilswan909reminds me old old videos I used to watch on home organizing Nikki at home or something like that she would stick for guests and I think that was before TikTok existed
Yes this is so bizarre, like I could see keeping maybe a few basic products in a guest bathroom but most people bring their own stuff when they travel. I would just ask to borrow my friend's stuff if I'm staying over and need something I didn't bring with me. I imagine a lot of it either gets returned or they just reuse for their next "restock" video since none of those products will actually get used ever.
I assume most restock videos are just using the exact same products over and over again. Genuinely, I don't think it's a wasteful as it looks. I mean, still wasteful, just not AS wasteful.
My sister and I lost our dad at a young age and got an inheritance, not huge, but enough for a home deposit. My sister has always been frugal and just bought her first home. I worked FT and the rest of the time I was distracting myself from traumas and buying everything and anything I wanted or things for others. Weekly or fortnightly fresh nails, lashes, facials, trying to be the girl I wanted everyone to think I was - until I had nothing left and ended up in debt. I ended up at rock bottom. The last year has been a real wake up call for me, I have ended up extremely chronically ill and on disability and can barely make ends meet. I can’t work like I used to. Now I cannot buy anything without feeling guilty and I prefer leaving stores empty handed (I rarely enter them in the first place) and have realised I feel better when I don’t buy something new unless e.g. I was given a gift card for something for my bday. I no longer get my nails or lashes done. Overconsumption is horrible and can ruin your life. It can just be the side effect of something darker that you aren’t facing. I have nobody to blame but myself but I really hope others aren’t influenced into this lifestyle. I am more proud of my car I’ve almost paid off after being extremely careful with my money. I regret everything I bought and learnt my lesson the hard way. I’m more grateful for the things I have. I acknowledge I wasted that privilege even with the loss of my dad but I try to think that he accidentally taught me a lesson because he threw money around like it was nothing too. I’m just glad I managed to learn the lesson and pay off my debt before it ruined my credit score and I ended up homeless. I was close. Don’t get me wrong - travelling and shopping isn’t something I regret AT ALL - best memories - but it’s the meaningless consumption that I was hiding from others that just got out of control.

I decided years ago to eat through my food stores and use up products before I buy more. This was brought on by moving and realizing how much crap I’d collected after living in the same place for 9 years. It took me a year to get through the food (you know those cans that are perfectly good but you didn’t want to eat) and 3 years to get through bathroom products. And every time I get close to finishing a friend moved and I get what they don’t want to move with and then I have more to work through. I don’t buy clothes until what I have can’t be mended any more. Literally spend like $200 a year on clothes. It’s saved me so much and I’m not debt free and living below my means. It’s amazing and I’m consuming less.
If these people were poor they’d be called hoarders. Overconsumption TikTok is an example of “what’s classy if you’re rich but trashy if you’re poor.” Hoarding
Very good point
Well said
So true omg, and interestingly enough I feel as though some people who didn’t grow up with a lot of financial resources/literacy tend to over-consume.
For the people who enjoy restock videos or doing restock videos.. ..just work retail as a stocker. You get to restock hundreds of items every day!
Good idea 😂😂😂
that would make an amazing job promotion ad
No when I restock at work I feel so satisfied. Like half of these creators would feel so fulfilled from doing inventory and stocking I’m not even joking.
Maybe that's why I don't like these videos I tried sooo hard at dollar general in hs all for naught 😅

I have never had a person set up a guest station for me like that. I think it's silly
I mean, I’ve forgotten stuff before when I’ve stayed with friends, and vis versa, but then we just share stuff? Like… I can come use your toothpaste. You can use my shampoo…

“What is the psychology behind people wanting their house to look like a store?” Yes! Thank you!
You should see us crocheters and knitters. But to be fair we do tend to make a lot of stuff.
Honestly I think it’s the dopamine rush of opening a new product. It’s a lot of minis so they’re opening a new whatever every few days.
I have a friend whose parents often took things away from her growing up, so she overpacks when she comes to hang out. And sometimes she does overstock her skin care cabinet. She's aware of it though.
Probably also overcompensating the fact they previously had no money/grew up with parents that were buying only necessary stuff
It’s a way to disassociate with reality. Continued externalization of the self, which is a product of late stage capitalism.

@@yeeyeeyeeye that's what I'm saying! It's totally pointless.
It's the forced "unintentional" ASMR with the excessive tapping that drives me bananas....
The tapping and the bending the plastic packaging back and forth so it crinkles makes me wanna transform into a werewolf
The excessive tapping needs to go bye bye

A "restock" of a bathroom with no shower curtain is SENDING ME. They can't use the products if they can't shower in there

I did too, but come on, this is insane
Or trauma of not having enough attention, or @buse.
The real enemy in those videos are those freaking sleeves covering their whole hand while they touch everything 😭

My mom always told me "if you have to convince people of the person you are, you're really just TRYING to convince your damn self."
i don’t think those things are really comparable lmao “nice guys” are violent misogynists

IKR like how does she openly admit that like its just some silly rhing
I wonder if her sister said yes cuz 😕😕😕
Thank you so much for your well researched vids, love them so much 💙
wtf did you buy? genuinely curious.
I go to therapy to heal my inner child. It's not cheap either, but it's been such a great help! And the better I feel, the less often I need to have a session, so it actually tapers off.
I got over that by like killing my inner child instead of listening to that spoiled fucking brat who had absolutely horrible taste in everything and decided to like fully embrace the passage of time and how I am so thankful that I am not that person anymore like thank god I am not that girl anymore

Aside from the overconsumption, WHY ARE PEOPLE FEEDING THEIR KIDS SO MUCH JUNK?!???
This is what i was thinking
100%
I saw on Twitter a while back a video of Cardi bs daughter lunch for school.
If you see what she packs in her stanley, wait until you find out what she packs for lunches everyday, sugar and chips galore
America
@@Sweet_Dee I have POTS too so I do use Liquid IV also
Preach! Your little kid going to dance class doesn’t need a Liquid IV
If i ever went to someone who stocks their bathroom I would probably take it all tbh, I’d probably never be invited back but it would be worth it

Imagine if a bigger person “packed” their Stanley with four cookies, a slice of cake, and an entire candy bar. The comments would look very different.
Yes ! Exactly my thoughts when i see junk food / snacks related videos most of the time on the public space / social médias 😢
Yeah, the cosplaying being poor as if it's a lifestyle choice 🤮
It's an interesting case study in marketing. If that's pushed as something to be desired or attainable then it's luxurious
It's still gross in my opinion but I understand families who have to make ends meet or save money.
I do this with my partner. The motor doesn't touch your mouth! AND, you could go the extra step to wipe it down if you're THAT o.c.d.
All that plastic.. What gets me is they enjoy refilling, but won’t refill the small things like the mini tic tack containers

I just found you and this video spoke to me…. You are so lovely- you put yourself in people’s shoes and also speak on how it is fun to watch some of these.
Stuffs prob so expensive because they gotta pay these ppl now 😭
Yes, once you get to a certain amount of followers, you get sent stuff for free.
Also a full Stanley is already heavy to carry so attaching all those dumb things is ridiculous especially for kids too
my biggest underconsumption flex is never owning a Stanley

I bought a ton of the “purse restock” items when I got my first bag 2-3 years ago and I don’t even think I’ve ever even used all of the stuff that I got. The fact that some people restock on that stuff WEEKLY absolutely baffles me

Right? I have guests maybe 1-2x a year? If that?

I am so sorry for that, hope things are different now

The fact that a normal lifestyle is considered “underconsumption” is the most dystopic thing.
@@Erin-xq3jb say that to the ppl who spend hundreds of thousands on vintage dolls/accessories for their dolls &other crazy hobbies.
100% the Stanley snack cups are rage bait, especially the one with all the chips and candy for the kid.

literally the motivation behind the guest bathroom restock is to flaunt wealth like “not only can i buy these expensive brands. i can buy them with the purpose that I don’t use them”
something that has really helped me has been taking inventory of everything i have (clothes, makeup, decor etc) and then making a list of the things i want/don’t have. if it’s been on my list for a while and i still want it i can purchase it.
Good idea!
I do the same!!

I totally agree that there can be a backstory. My dad grew up in rather poor family, with lots of children, completely different times. They didn’t have fancy stuff, had food on their table but nothing special.
Now my dad is over-consuming food. When he shops he tends to buy way more than we can eat. We had so many discussions about it but there is something in him that just makes him buying more and more just to keep the fridge completely full.
I feel that older generation had to be smarter with money and didn’t allow kids much and now those kids are grown ups with money and they want to finally be in a power of getting whatever they want.
My grandma is the same as your dad. She has food that expired in 2003 but doesnt see an issue with it. She even tries to serve us some
This is exactly what I was going to comment!

Proud of you for being honest with yourself! You got this!

I heard a saying once… the more stuff you have, the less value each item has. I think there’s truth to that.
Or like Kiki said I do a lot of research and get really well informed on the product before I buy it
Thanks for sharing, I needed to hear this. God bless you ❤️🙏
@@tearfulxsoul i don't mean to pry but your user name seeing as names are important having such a name may not be so great for you. Also am happy for you and glad that you have made such great progress and that you have drawn positive lessons from your experiences also so sorry for your loss. Best wishes to you.
Thank you for sharing such a painful experience. Hope you are continuing to feel better and find meaning after your loss and rock bottom time.
@shushu-sp5ke yeah I can see your point. I originally made my username because I didn’t want people I know seeing my social media presence, but I did create it when I was in a worse headspace and don’t have the creativity to come up with something else 😂

I’m similar to you. I live in Australia and food is sooooo expensive here so I pretty much only buy products on sale and only when I run out.
