Macca's Walk To Lennon's House

  • When Paul McCartney met John Lennon, he used to walk to Lennon's Aunt Mimi's house. A walk which took him from Allerton to Woolton in Liverpool. The walk took him through Allerton Manor Golf Club, via a public footpath, where later they would be famously photographed by Dezo Hoffmann. This walk follows that same route.

Some twenty years ago or more ago I was attending a training in Liverpool. To get to it I walked past John's house and noticed the footpath going in the direction I needed to go, so I took it, hoping all would be alright. After I walked a certain amount, something told me very strongly that both John & Paul used this pathway to meet up, I just knew it, an amazing feeling.

Remarkable that you were conveniently born in the same year as John and Paul! And impressive when you mentioned that the video didn't show it was SUNNY, and the video appeared to tear itself in half, and suddenly look sunnier!
Interesting that you mention someone has to be dead for 20 years, to get a Blue Plaque! So it is unlikely that you (at 67), or me, (at 71) will outlive Paul Mc.Cartney by 20 years, and see a Blue Plaque! I suppose they wait to see if someone STAYS famous after their death. But it's a shame for some of us from people's time, not to see their Blue Plaque! Same for myself, being from Wallington, south london - like JEFF BECK. I won't see HIS Blue Plaque, either!

It is a much more "posh" and suburban area than I imagined. They tried to tell me "...there beneath the blue suburban skies....". I am from a suburban area in the southeastern United States and this area looks so much like the place I live, it's uncanny! The architecture of the houses is a bit different but it has the same appearance in every other way. I'm sure Liverpool doesn't have the the heat we do. I went to London in 2002 when they were having a record setting heat wave...it was EXACTLY like my home is all summer - every summer. lol. Thank you for the tour!!

Wow! Love this walk. It's a great idea for for those of us living so far away. In 1978, I was able to scrounge some money together to go to England (from Toronto). We bought Brit Rail passes and had one week to travel from London all over England and Scotland, sleeping on trains. Of course in London we saw Abbey Road and Paul's House on Cavendish Avenue from St. John's Wood station. In Liverpool, we had a whole day (lol) to explore the city, via public transit, to find Beatle places that I read about in various Beatles' biographies. One of these places was Menlove Avenue and John's house. Also, the Cavern (which at the time was a pile of rubble with a plaque of an angel, NEMS store (bought the Magical Mystery EP there), Lime Street station, Royal Liver Building. At that time there were no tours or businesses to help us hungry Beatles fans, from all over the world, see the important Beatles places we could only read about. I love this idea and have subscribed with the hope to see more walks.

Thank you for that, I enjoyed it. Particularly good that you mentioned the Dezo Hoffman photos at the golf course and showed them. The Ford Anglia car was George's I believe. The only thing is that in those days it wouldn't have been Allerton Manor Golf course but Allerton municipal golf links. It was owned by the council. It's only in relatively recent years that it's been sold off to private business.
Also, slightly surprised that you didn't mention the bus stop on Mather Avenue at the top of Forthlin Road. That would have been were Paul got the 86 bus each day to the Liverpool Institute and I think it's commonly understood that when Paul wrote those lyrics about getting a bus in A Day in The Life he was thinking about the 86 bus. Paul has a bit of a thing about buses. He was asked in the early days of Beatlemania if there was anything he missed about his pre fame life and he said 'getting the bus'. He also writes about a bus journey in the song On My Way To Work on the 'New' album. In that I think he was remembering his short period as an electrical apprentice at a firm called Massey and Coggins in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. Think he would have got the 86 to Penny Lane for that one and then get on another bus from there, the 4 or 5 I think.

Would have been the number 4 to Alfred Street and a short walk to Bridge Street on Spotforth Road or as spotty road as we knew it, and to think George only lived 2 streets away where the bus stop was. Wonderfully engaging and peaceful walk. I had always wondered what the trek between John and Paul's childhood homes would be like --- now I no longer have to wonder. Thank you so much for taking it and posting it. Someone in the comments section mentions that it's a great shame that there is a comparative lack of interest in George and Ringo's homes. There are likely 2 reasons for this. First and most obvious, Lennon and McCartney were the main creative force in the group, having written the majority of the songs and were therefore more overtly popular. Secondly, I am pretty sure that the area of Liverpool shown in this video is much more aesthetically pleasing and scenic than the neighborhoods in which George and Ringo grew up. As an aside, having a favorite Beatle is like having a favorite Beatle's song --- not the easiest thing to decide. I do love them all, each had a unique personality and sensibility but if I had to pick one, it might be George --- there was a special essence of peace and spirituality about him, not to mention a sharp and scathing wit (something he shared with Lennon), and he also, by the end of the group's tenure, proved that he was an immensely talented writer as well. May both he and John rest in peace and may Paul and Ringo live long and prosper (I'm pretty sure they've already done both!). 🍓fields forever. Peace and love everyone.

Both of these two houses are important tourist attractions, being well and sensitively managed by the National Trust with interiors restored to how they would have been in the early 60s. Visitors can only arrive on booked tours by minibuses to prevent overcrowding and traffic problems for local residents. Interestingly, there were a lot of complaints from more conservative members of the National Trust that the two properties should be run by them, thinking it outside the remit of such an organisation, as they considered the properties to have little historical or architectural importance. All I can say is how very wrong I think these people were. Visiting the houses is a very moving experience. I'm so glad they were preserved so well by such a responsible organisation for the public to see.

I had the pleasure of touring these sights several years back. i actually took the Beatle Bus option first and followed it up with the National Trust tour the following day. They did not entirely overlap plus the latter one was in a small bus and included closely guided tours of John and Paul’s houses. If you have the time and money, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret it. I was a most fortunate fellow. At Strawberry Fields, we happened to run into Alan Williams who was the band’s manager who booked their engagement in Hamburg. He was most friendly, and his passing since reminded me of his role in their careers.

Looking at the video again I would imagine Paul would have had a bike and took the Donkey path at the top of Heath Rd, it was much wider, the golf course narrows at Menlove Ave or did and a bike would have done that in 10 mins, we all had bikes them days and they wasn't poor not to have had, the path you took is where the new monastry is built. brings you out near where the remand home was. All these videos bring back fond memories of my youth. Do you remember Clarke Gardens and the animals?

The road over the golf course ran to Menlove Ave past the Rose garden and the Radio Merseyside transmitter. That is where the Hoffman photos were taken. It is closed now. Thank you, that's filled in some gaps in my knowledge. It's interesting you mention Dezo Hoffman and the photo he took on which the Beatles statues at the Pier Head were modelled. I didn't know he took that photograph. I believe they were staying at the Hotel President during one of their first visits to London. I always think John is looking across the road at the (then) Russell Hotel, which was a bit more opulent, and wondering why they weren't staying there.
