There is incentive for vested interests to import. If we had no import option available then our fighter jet industry will rapidly progress. you have conveniently ignored Indian bike industry. I generally agree but you are wrong about the Chinese. They did not start to develop their technological and industrial infrastructure on the backs of cheap low quality goods exports to the west. They have been developing their technology and heavy industry for at least a century, under both the Nationalists and the Communists. Just one example amongst many, The Chinese launched their own satellite on their own rocket fired from their own territory on April 24, 1970 (Dong Fang Hong 1). BTW, Indian launched their first satellite on a Soviet rocket fired from Soviet territory on April 19, 1975 (Aryabhata).

The current political instability in China comes precisely because modern Chinese workers are fed up with their working conditions, even as those conditions are getting better than what many AMERICANS endure. In India workers still tolerate much harsher conditions and don't complain. This shows that Indian workers are overall more able to "eat bitterness" than Chinese ones. So you can't blame the workers for not being hardworking. The problem lies much further up the chain.

I thought Shiv ji being in the geopol space for decades would have much better understanding of the situation. He took one example of niche medical equipment manufacturing and went on to build an irrelevant case. We have manufacturing in India, go research it. We cant compete with China in the low end space for various reasons. No democracy can compete with them. They are essentially slave labour. China has lopsided development, they are not our role model. We can learn _some_ lessons from them (like rapid iterative development). But by no means are they any role model for us. If you think they are our role model, then you should just stick to medical profession and leave geopol/national matters to others. China is on the verge of collapse. If X! gets brainstr0ke tomorrow, their whole country will go into a civil war. Perhaps you fell for all their PR show and tell.
Chinese workers are paid more than Indian ones in both nominal and PPP dollars. The idea that China does slave labor is itself very outdated. You also have to remember that Chinese laborers spend an average of 20% of their income on groceries while the equivalent Indian laborer spends up to 40%.
The point I'm making is that Indian workers are ALREADY WORKING IN WORSE CONDITIONS than their Chinese counterparts. The problem definitely does not lie in the labor force's inability to endure harsh working conditions. Indian workers ARE enduring those harsher conditions NOW.
The current political instability in China comes precisely because modern Chinese workers are fed up with their working conditions, even as those conditions are getting better than what many AMERICANS endure. In India workers still tolerate much harsher conditions and don't complain. This shows that Indian workers are overall more able to "eat bitterness" than Chinese ones. So you can't blame the workers for not being hardworking. The problem lies much further up the chain.
