    For those of us who’ll never get below Killaloe Bridge this was fascinating and well worth its length. I suspect you might have filmed more around Limerick Marina if you hadn’t got the unexpected window to get back above Ardnacrusha. It would be fascinating to see a video (filmed perhaps with your drone video) explaining why the Limerick Marina is so treacherous, and why coming up with a solution is not easy. Pat Lysaght is a fascinating character. There is more of him in the clips you used than anywhere else online. Thank you for doing this and I hope you will think again about the Estuary, as your technology has improved so much since you last filmed.

    I am from the US and have boated on the major rivers in the Eastern United States. My prime river I've boated is the Ohio River and for most of its length, the average lift/drop is around 25 or so feet. Most locks on the Upper Mississippi only have drops of about six feet with the exception of the lock at Keokuk, Iowa that has a drop or lift of 38 feet because at that point they built a large hydroelectric plant back in the 1920s that still functions to this day. There are a few locks along the Tennessee River and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, which is a manmade, favored alternate route for most recreational boaters to reach the Gulf of Mexico rather than run the lower Mississippi. This lock you went through is really something. It looks to be quite old and for any era, is an impressive construction. I agree with you, having such a significant leak coming from the upriver gate of the first chamber is most disconcerting, especially when you get to the bottom of the chambers. It is something that your locks tend to be rather narrow, but since you don't have the type of huge river tows that we have on our major waterways no need for big locks. Many of the locks on the American rivers have two chambers, the "auxiliary" chambers measuring 600'x110' and the main chambers being 1200'x600'. I have just found your videos about your trips on the waterways of Ireland. I think I am going to have to plan a trip to Ireland at some point in the future and book a boat rental. I'd rather see Ireland this way just like I enjoy running our rivers and few remaining canal systems. To me, the world is a much more interesting place seeing it from the waters at "river speed" rather than zooming around on an interstate.

    • @DriftwoodBoatBlog
      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  Рік тому +1

      Hi Michael,
      There's six outer locks on the River Shannon but the drop in them is seldom more than a metre. It's a very slow moving river only dropping about 15mtrs in 350 KLM. Then it makes up for it at the dam!
      Hope you'll get to explore Ireland by water some day, it certainly would be the way to do it.

    Hi Guys, Another fabulous video of a great trip. It was great to meet both of you last week in Carrick-On-Shannon, sorry we couldn't talk for longer but you had someone to collect so no worries there. I have watched most of your video's and they bring back great memories of all the places we as a family have been to over the years when we had a cruiser based out of Portanenna on Lough Ree. We will someday get back to owning our own cruiser again as its a wonderful place to be, I recommend to all, put a trip on the Shannon on a cruiser on your bucket list, its something you will not regret. In the meantime we will continue to hire out cruisers as we did last week to keep us going until we can get back on a more permanent basis. Guys keep up the fab videos and I look forward to more with the great tips & information you impart each time. Now its time for a lovely cup of tea, Cheers

    I went down to the Shannon estuary in 1995 before the development and mobile phones. I never knew anything. I followed a workboat through the barrier they notified the lock in Ardnancrusha. I waited at anchor till Balls bridge looked deep enough and low enough. I anchored then and went ashore to explore Limerick. I spent 2 nights at anchor in the estuary. No echo sounder.Going back I tied up below the lock at Ardnacrusha. I could not get an ones attention at the lock or dam. I walked across fields went to a house they phoned the lock who let me through. Ignorance is bliss. My father and his friends never went below killaloe bridge.

    Míle buíochas a chairde. I sail a smallish yacht - the Sí Gaoithe - around the West Coast with the last thirty years. She's berthed in Ros a' Mhíl Marina in Conamara with the last few years. This video was a great find as I hope to bring Sí Gaoithe from Ros a' Mhíl to Loch Derg via Limerick next spring. With a stop to de-mast in Kilrush. Killaloe Bridge seems a challenge. • @DriftwoodBoatBlog
      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  2 роки тому +1

      Hi EL Zorro, thanks for you comment and really good questions. Most of the old canal navigation is now lost, but some stretches in or close to Limerick may yet be restored. I think you're right that from Pattern to Limerick may be passable by canoe. That would be an interesting trip to take 👍
