I agree with you, he is a beautiful man. Plus he has not only an amazing voice and gift of talent, but a kind of ease and relaxed demeanor; a friendly, sincere vibe that actually reminds me of John Denver. Who, I think, would love this cover if he were alive to hear it.

I have no idea how, but everything in this song was chest (including the G#1s) and falsetto except the lowest note here (F#1) on the big climax which is done with a subharmonic. Geoff is really a master at those and uses them a lot, but he likes to keep it in chest as much as he can. I'd recommend the Sixteen Tons cover from him. In that song, everything is chest.

I’m sure someone else mentioned but only the F#1 is a subharmonic. He just adds a lot of power and resonance to his lower chest notes, you can hear the same tone in his speaking voice. It’s hard for non bass singers to understand the placement of these notes and I’m not exactly a musical genius so I couldn’t really explain it but I’ll say just sing a low note for you in your chest voice and add as much volume as possible and you’ll be able to get a somewhat similar tone
I’m also a bass and I can confirm somewhere around D2-B1 most of us lose a lot of that round resonance and it starts to sound more like slipping towards fry, that just has to do with the frequency becoming so low you can hear the individual vibrations. Kind of like a string bass just sounds like popping off mic

I always remark how nimble Geoff is with his vocals. He just bounces around the octaves at will like a ping pong ball! I have been clamoring for Tim Foust, Avi Kaplan, and Geoff Castellucci to do a collaboration. They have similar ranges, but different techniques and textures to their tones. I can't even imagine how viral that video would go! I really like the way you break things down to explain them. I never went further than high school choir and karaoke singer, but you made it make sense in layman's terms. Thank you! ❤
That first roads, that you thought was subharmonic, was just chest voice. Geoff has just that low of a voice, that his chest notes sound like subharmonic, but it wasn't quite subharmonics THIS TIME, later in the song, as you saw, he does ;)
Thank you for the subharmonic explanation that finally makes sense to me. Every other time I've heard it explained (even by Geoff himself!), they've talked about how they've achieved it by using either a clearing or growling technique. And people saying that the person is actually 'not singing the note you're hearing' just baffled me. But hearing it explained as bringing in a second set of folds that is going to change how the sound produced by the primary folds is perceived finally makes sense to me. Though, of course, it also accentuates the fact that it is one heck of a technique to learn, much less perfect as Mr. Castellucci does in order to be able to do it consistently and in a 'live' situations no less!

Essentially, when he hit puberty his voice didn't drop like those of Avi Kaplan and Tim Foust, but now, through constantly, but very gently, stretching his vocal chords since at least 1997(when VoicePlay started), he can go lower than both of them(with chest voice). Most people, if they don't try to use a vocal fry, like you did in imitating his C2, they might open their throats (I don't know the anatomical terminology behind that) to make it sound a bit more resonant. That's what Geoff does, but he does it lower than most people, making it sound a little rumbly, hence the G1s sounding throaty. If you see his group VoicePlay's cover "Superstition", he hits an F#1 in the same style, but in their collaboration with Kurt Hugo Schneider, in their Twenty One Pilots mashup, he doesn't do that, making it sound more breathy. His subharmonics are easy to pick out as they sound nothing like his chest voice.
That's so cool. Some folks were discussing his calling himself a baritone with a bass range, people were like, "No way" ...But my opinion is that with the ridiculous range he has, he can call himself anything he darn well wants to.
You should check out his cover of Sixteen Tons. By far my favorite. His choices with the arrangement and... um.. interesting instruments are flat epic.

The way he says Virginia is actually pretty common in the south. I wouldn't really consider it a stylistic choice as much as it is probably just how he pronounces the word. Now, he does exaggerate it a tad, not gonna lie. I'm from Texas, and I pronounce Virginia Vir-gin-yuh. Also, great video. You've earned a sub from me.

Subharmonic singing is not done by using false folds. It's done by making the vocal folds vibrate differently from each other. Geoff has some videos about this on his YT channel, should check it out :)
Please react to Voice Plays version of Tennessee Whiskey. The riffs they do are amazing. The riffs at the end with all of them together in perfect harmony & they were all in sync with one another is out of this world fantastic. So hard to do as a group.
You have to try David Phelps too. He recently made a cover for "I have nothing" from Whitney Houston. It's one of the best covers in my opinion. Also, there's a video with him singing entitled "The most resonant notes" that can be an interesting teaching material full of examples. If you'll try, you won't regret it :)
Geoff only used a subharmonic at the end. His harmonic content in his voice is so strong and rich, even his low chest voice (he's good to F1 in chest) sounds nearly like a subharmonic. But if you listen, you can hear the low note is the principle frequency; this is the key to denoting which type of note it is. With a subharmonic, you will still hear the primary an octave higher as slightly stronger, but the subharmonic will be there with it. With Geoff, the opposite is true on his chest voice: the primary will be stronger and you may hear the 2nd or 3rd harmonic pop out as slightly weaker. I have ran his voice through a spectrum analyzer and he has some of the most amazing harmonic content I have ever seen. I am not only a singer but also an audio engineer, so I am fascinated with all things musical.
@@CoverCoach, I mainly sing classic rock (do so in a baritone/low tenor register; my range is F1-A4). But I also Rap, plus, sing in a church choir, as well.
Geoff is a master of the subharmonics - his low sub is B0 that he can sustain 14 sec in singing. See it in VoicePlay's Valhalla Calling. His lowest note is A0 (very fast growl), F1 full chest, B4 starts the mix, Bb5 is his top falsetto. I grew up around there and it looks like countryside outside Orlando.

okay not sure if you do songs out of season but you should hear his version of The Headless Horseman. Or even 16 tons, you wil flip for that one. That and his group Voiceplays Oogie Boogie Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Actually Voiceplay has covered several songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas and they are all fantastic.
Geoff went too low on this one in my opinion for the song it is distracting from the music. Geoff also does "how to" videos on how to sing bass. He is quite clear that he is a baritone singing bass unlike Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan who are actual natural basses and you can find listed among the active bass singers alive today on Wikipedia. Geoff uses the subharmonic technique for his lowest notes. The other 2 basses only use growl/fire-breathing not subharmonics that is a Geoff specialty. All of them have very wide vocal ranges. Tomi P is an up and coming secular bass singer for you to check out that has only performed on UA-cam so far but is very active.
My ex-wife is deaf, and has worn hearing aides since she was about six years old. She can hear lower registers better than higher ones, and has been a John Denver fan all her life. When I shared this with her, she said, “Where did that BASS come from. He such a skinny dude! Nice! Thanks."
4:40 that's not subharmonics lol. I can sing the note he's reaching in pure chest and his voice is like a minor third lower than mine, his subs go way into the first (and recently the 0th) octave
Thank you so much for explaining sub-harmonics. I am a bass, and while I had voice lessons in college, we never got onto that topic during my lessons. While I can get into the sub-harmonic range, Geoff has an even greater range, which I completely appreciate and enjoy listening to. I was just watching VoicePlay's cover of Go The Distance, and you can see both Geoff and Eli doing a good bit of hand motion as they sing.

Reiterating what a lot of people were saying about most stuff being chest rather than subharmonic but the resonance of chest notes I’ve found changes when you get really low. For example for me my voice switches at about G2 and again at C#2, I’ve found that it gets much rounder and fuller though I see it mostly in bass’s. Hope this helps
Can I ask you to take a look at Jahmene Douglas who sang Etta James' At Last on BGT. I know many reatcors don't watch talent shows but he was outstanding and has recorded many beautiful tracks since. I want to see him being promoted more as he really deserves it.

Geoff's lowest chest note is a G1. Below that he is using sub-harmonics.

Subharmonic singing is not done by using false folds. It's done by making the vocal folds vibrate differently from each other. Geoff has some videos about this on his YT channel, should check it out :)
You really need to watch Voiceplay Oogie Boogie Song. Does a good job of showing Geoff's vocal range.

You have to try David Phelps too. He recently made a cover for "I have nothing" from Whitney Houston. It's one of the best covers in my opinion. Also, there's a video with him singing entitled "The most resonant notes" that can be an interesting teaching material full of examples. If you'll try, you won't regret it :)
His tone is unique because he sings so nasally. His placement is so high, but it still sounds nice. That first low note was not a sub btw

Geoff only used a subharmonic at the end. His harmonic content in his voice is so strong and rich, even his low chest voice (he's good to F1 in chest) sounds nearly like a subharmonic. But if you listen, you can hear the low note is the principle frequency; this is the key to denoting which type of note it is. With a subharmonic, you will still hear the primary an octave higher as slightly stronger, but the subharmonic will be there with it. With Geoff, the opposite is true on his chest voice: the primary will be stronger and you may hear the 2nd or 3rd harmonic pop out as slightly weaker. I have ran his voice through a spectrum analyzer and he has some of the most amazing harmonic content I have ever seen. I am not only a singer but also an audio engineer, so I am fascinated with all things musical.

Geoff is a master of the subharmonics - his low sub is B0 that he can sustain 14 sec in singing. See it in VoicePlay's Valhalla Calling. His lowest note is A0 (very fast growl), F1 full chest, B4 starts the mix, Bb5 is his top falsetto. I grew up around there and it looks like countryside outside Orlando.

Geoff went too low on this one in my opinion for the song it is distracting from the music. Geoff also does "how to" videos on how to sing bass. He is quite clear that he is a baritone singing bass unlike Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan who are actual natural basses and you can find listed among the active bass singers alive today on Wikipedia. Geoff uses the subharmonic technique for his lowest notes. The other 2 basses only use growl/fire-breathing not subharmonics that is a Geoff specialty. All of them have very wide vocal ranges. Tomi P is an up and coming secular bass singer for you to check out that has only performed on UA-cam so far but is very active.
My ex-wife is deaf, and has worn hearing aides since she was about six years old. She can hear lower registers better than higher ones, and has been a John Denver fan all her life. When I shared this with her, she said, “Where did that BASS come from. He such a skinny dude! Nice! Thanks."
I'm 14 and I like to think I sing pretty deep until I heard Geoff and now I sound like a seagulls
4:40 that's not subharmonics lol. I can sing the note he's reaching in pure chest and his voice is like a minor third lower than mine, his subs go way into the first (and recently the 0th) octave
Thank you so much for explaining sub-harmonics. I am a bass, and while I had voice lessons in college, we never got onto that topic during my lessons. While I can get into the sub-harmonic range, Geoff has an even greater range, which I completely appreciate and enjoy listening to. I just never understood how it was done, so again, thank you for that. Keep it up. I look forward to more reviews and analyses from you.

Another instance where you should listen to Peter Hollens' solo version of this song. I don't get the video, but the sound...well, it is very difficult to believe that it is a capella. Peter knocks it out of the park.
That first note you said was subharmonic wasn't actually subharmonic for Geoff. All the rest were tho

Everything is chest except the f1 halfway through the song which is subharmonic.

@@ruthnellis4466 there was a good thread onone of these videos (I've lost track, I have about 34 tabs open) about how moving the hands seems to be a thing with basses especially, but actually with many singers going into the extremes of their range. I was just watching VoicePlay's cover of Go The Distance, and you can see both Geoff and Eli doing a good bit of hand motion as they sing.

Reiterating what a lot of people were saying about most stuff being chest rather than subharmonic but the resonance of chest notes I’ve found changes when you get really low. For example for me my voice switches at about G2 and again at C#2, I’ve found that it gets much rounder and fuller though I see it mostly in bass’s. Hope this helps

Can I ask you to take a look at Jahmene Douglas who sang Etta James' At Last on BGT. I know many reatcors don't watch talent shows but he was outstanding and has recorded many beautiful tracks since. I want to see him being promoted more as he really deserves it.
