Nope. I saw a guy jogging down a road a few years ago who was far more ginger. He was the most ginger haired bloke I've ever seen. I've never seen him since; maybe he moved or maybe the Sun got him?
This song is about a guy who has achieved what he wants, total isolation, and is proud of how all his secrets are stashed away, how orderly his life is, and how he is free to do what he wishes without the constraint of the opinion of friends. However he is sad, as his life is empty, and as much as he tries to fill it with materialistic possessions, he wants to have somebody who cares for him, but he fears being as invisible in the outside world as he is inside his bubble. Yet when somebody approaches him to try coax him out, he shuts himself in, telling them "This is my private life, go away." I can relate to this song on so many levels.
This is what I love about Oingo Boingo. You have such split emotions between being very jovial and careless or depressed to tears. It's a very odd feeling
Oingo Boingo has always such a weird way of presenting their message. Like the message is so clear but subtle at the same time and it’s so odd really. And sometimes with sounds and tones so oddly upbeat compared to the weird and twisted stories being told. But Danny Elfman also expresses those darker themes and emotions in the songs with his odd movements and facial expressions that looks like he’s on the verge of a psychotic breakdown. And his voice also sells that. A mind boggling group but a great group nonetheless.
I actually did this I guess you could call it "style" of expressions just for the fun of it with some of my friends and It stuck with me in school as the guy who did the cartoonish stuff lol. anyways, The simple way to say how to do it is basically over-animate your facial expressions whilst jumping your facial muscles with the words. It turns out pretty creepy just by doing that😂

will forever be my favorite song just for this reason, as Im chronically physically ill and been in isolation for a decade now as a hikiko/neet. this song kinda made for us tbh. the conflicting nature of wanting to remain in your private life but wanting to call for someone to take you out of it. I think the happy nature of the song really seals that in too bc of how fun it can be to have your own space with nothing else to influence your true nature and the blissful state of freedom. I've never heard a song written in this way that encapsulates this dichotomy it so well.
One line about this song in particular makes me wonder. "There's something dangerous I like." This could be anything. Is the isolation he likes dangerous? Is he on drugs that isolate him and are also dangerous to him? Is it a particular thing he's addicted to that is dangerous to his health? I sorta think that loneliness is the side-effect of having control of everything because he is alone. He loves being alone, but the loneliness really just kills him on the inside. This is a tough one.
***** Initially, that is what I thought he said too. I looked up the lyrics, and everything says the latter. It sorta changed my view on what the song meant.
The isolation is dangerous. He lives comfortably, but is aware that he's wasting his life away and the longer he continues that life style, the worse off he'll be off, but he still doesn't want to change. Like someone who's aware of the effects of drugs but can't help themselves...
Ikr? I've always said about this band, "If there's anything I like better than a band with a guy just bringin' it on the xylophone, it's a band with 2 guys GOIN' TO TOWN on xylophones. (Grey matter is a great example)
Danny Elfman is such an amazing artist. My favorite is his actions and especially his facial expressions, they add so much character to his work, it makes it as I’m watching a show, and someone’s actual creation. Has to be my all time favorite artist.
I just love how he takes these happy sounding melodies and hides little dark surprises in the lyrics. Elfman always has this quirky happy/dark/twisted side and I think that's what makes his music so magical. Even his movie scores are like that in a way. He sounds like he has a fun mind to live in.
My college bedroom looked oddly similar to Danny's room in this video. I even had an olive green blanket. The only thing missing were the red clown pajamas. I guess his Private Life was my undergraduate accommodations.
Growing up in suburban southern California in the early 80's (Jay and Amber- think Fast Times at Ridgemont High), "Boingo" were every bit as big, as beloved as the biggest groups at the time. But it seemed like only the college kids that went to their shows in L.A. or high schoolers/junior high kids who heard them on local radio knew about them. Fun times, great music, bizarre humor- Oingo Boingo was a secret handshake among the kids that didn't fit in. And, you haven't even played their early stuff which features HORNS! "On The Outside" "Who Do You Want to Be" "Only A Lad" "Private Life"!
This is my private life I have no friends to fear I've got no problems, no cross to bear If you can find me Come and get me out of here This is my private place Everything is neat and clean The skeletons are hidden in the closet This is my private place Come and get me out of here This is my private life This is my private life This is my private life.... These are my private things There they are against the wall The dirty pictures, religious objects These are my private things Come and get them out of here This is my private bed This is where I lie at night Staring at a lightbulb hanging on the ceiling Waiting for a dream to Come and get me out of here Here in my humble room at night I often wonder what goes on out there What makes them run so scared I often stare at the people passing by But they can't see me through my window shades Just like I'm not even there This is my private life This is my private life This is my private life There's something dangerous I like This is my private life I know my problems aren't your fault What I really want to know: Has it always been this way? This is my private life This is my private life This is my private life Come and get me out of here
The set of artistic videos from Danny+Oingo Boingo paired with the chosen song's lyrics are so fantastic and deep. I often wonder how many people pass by without noticing. I also wonder how many people miss the repeated, cryptic allusions to a dark being residing around or within Danny. When you enter into the videos for Private Life, Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me, Little Girls, Gratitude (the most obvious display), you are stepping from reality into a mental/dream state. The art of these videos in particular are grossly underappreciated at this point in time. It is awesome to see Danny has reappeared with new material in the last year and it is as thought provoking as ever.
Yes! I ponder this often! These videos are performance art, not just music videos. Danny puts thought into eveything he does. Personifies the shadow and presents it in a way where we can view it comfortably, but just uncomfortable enough for thought. A true artist, and inspiration.
I had a nightmare of a meth head who looked like Danny Elfman trying to get into my home and screaming "OINGO BOINGO IRENE" at me while shredding my mail so fast tiny pieces of paper got through the screen door and made me wake up breathing heavy. I've listened to Oingo Boingo in the past but it's been years so when i found this song after i woke up i became infatuated with it, I can't stop listening to it.
+Don Burd Hahaha pretty funny Don but i wasn't taking anything. I usually have weird, almost movie like dreams. This one however was alittle special because it lead me to this band.
Oingo is just the best. Danny rules. The intensity and talent of everyone in that band is insane. Going through some of these old tracks recently. Man, they still hold up solid.
When this song came out, I thought that Oingo Boingo had been getting worse, then this came along & just blew my socks off. To this day it gives me chills. I love these guys.
This is one of the last bands I recall having to have their albums the day they were released. I don't recall being disappointed with any of them. I have not dug into the vault to revisit this music nearly enough over the years.
I love Oingo Boingo!!. This song is so unique & catchy and the video is hilarious and awesome! I've been a fan since I was in grade school ('87-'88?- thanks to my awesome Dad) and every year or so I gotta go on a Boingo Binge (:... Its crazy to think that just 4 yrs. prior to this songs release (which would be '79) The Doobie Brothers & Donna Summers were topping charts with a music style sounding decades older than this!?.. Its even more apparent to me now, when considering music of the 80's/90"s &now that Oingo Boingo not only "stepped out of the box" to create innovative/original music during a time when "new wave" was busting out experimental hits left and right... but I feel like amidst all of that....they literally invented their very own genre of music, that still to this day remains kind of an exclusive, and rare category to define. :} ........................(or find... lol) I also love that Danny E & OingoB weren't afraid to be uncommon. With their distinct sound and instruments, to Elfman's enigmatic persona & one-of-a-kind vocals.. I'm sure a lot of people most-likely considered him "strange" or "creepy" (..as I can see below, these comments are still being made about him in 2014 on you tube!) lol! ..Obviously that's what he was probably going for but I don't find D.Elfman creepy at all {:.. I think He's a delightfully bizarre, yet totally brilliant artist & Its from his eccentric & "creepy" imagination that sooooooo much progressive, fun and influential music was created... Beyond Boingo.. I'm sure everyone's already aware of Elfman's amazingly composed soundtracks for some of the most memorable motion pictures in recent history (Batman, Beetlejuice, the Nightmare b4 xmas, The Simpsons etc.etc.) And I cannot imagine any of those movies being nearly as interesting OR successful without the iconic musical accompaniments scored bye D.E. ..Sooo I guess I'd just like say: Thank you Danny Elfman for your awesome array of musical contributions and for all the great songs created with Oingo Boingo! {: T h e E n d lol
LastUnicorn x9 **wipes tear from eye** Danny is one of few in the world that I see as a giver of musical genius, which means very little to most, but it means a lot to me
I've always loved the high quality way Oingo Boingo mixed all their records. There's so much punch in the bass and drums. Bands today just blend it all together and it sounds like mud in comparison. As a result, these old records sound brand new today even compared to what a new group has just released. It probably also has a lot to do with all the shitty digital recordings in studios these days. Originals in the old days were done on reel to reel. To this very day there hasn't been anything to match the type of recording quality the ancient reel to reel provided in studios and in playback. Hell, I'd still prefer records and cassettes to todays CDs. Also, if you have a group's old cassette, you can actually break down and even separate each individual track if you wanted to. There's no way in hell you can do that with CD's
@@spimbles underrated now? They broke up years ago. Out of sight out of mind. Danny Elfman moved on. In the 80s and 90s they were far from underrated. No one mentions them when talking the 80s because those people don't know music or the 80s. They are mostly morons who weren't there and/or self labeled music experts. Oingo Boingo go back to the 70s on the old Gong Show when they were called the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo
Maybe, but the first albums are the best they've done, more like a live act, then afterwards they used too much that 80's FM big rythm, with less breaks and crazy structure and more important less groove, just like every new wave band you can named they got trapped the mid 80's sound. You don't realy feel a band is playing after the 3rd album (counting forbidden zone as the first). There are good song all along their discography though. Actually that third album with "insects" already has a no-groove sound like a band recording instrument by instruments, but you can feel the songs are from the same batch than Only a lad, so it still feels like a true rock band...
Just realized that my friends have been terrible towards me and made me feel miserable. Now I feel like I’m unlovable and alone. For whatever reason, this is the song that speaks to me in my most desperate moments, a plea to be seen by someone, to be noticed and acknowledged. A desperate call for someone, anyone to like you as you truly are. Maybe that’s just me right now though. If your reading this remember, you owe your time to no one. You don’t owe anyone anything. The only thing you owe is love and kindness to yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel terrible about yourself. Your are amazing and there are people out there who will truly care about you. Thank you for reading, remember to always be kind.
I relate to it too - except for the “neat and clean” part. Well I did promise Mr. Elfman I would clean my room so I could go see him for my birthday this October...
I don’t normally post comments on here, but this really stuck with me. I’m in a similar situation right now and have been contemplating leaving everything behind (can’t really say exactly what I mean unless I want my comment to get removed lmao). I’ve been stuck in a cycle of trying to find someone who likes me without putting in the time and effort of liking myself first. Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that this helped me snap out of those thoughts, and at a very crucial moment too. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to write all of this. We’ll both find a place where we’re accepted and loved for who we are. No matter how long it takes.
You deserve friends who see and love you for your authentic self. I hope you and anyone struggling rn find that. I love to see how deeply Oingo Boingo touches people, even all these years later, because I relate to that (milennial fan).
i relate to this song a lot, for my entire life ive been forced to stay inside and im bad at social skills so i basically have no friends, i feel insane and isolated and have weird manic bursts of energy bc i want this to end, i look outside wanting to make friends but i fear of getting shunned even though i think im amazing, i just feel insane and im held indoors against my will and its like yes... my private things.. they are ALSO on the WUUAALLLL!!!!!!!! i stare at people and walk around my room weirdly
Oingo Boingo is an amazing band, I very much enjoy their music. So glad Oingo Boingo was referenced in JJBA and honestly one of my favorite minor villain's in part 3. Both Oingo and Boingo. My favorite siblings in JJBA part 3.
Why am I obsessed with this video? Why have I been playing it repeatedly, daily, for like two weeks now?? How did my roommate come to be obsessed with this song separately from me at the same time??? Is this because of the pandemic ? I can't stop looking at his crazy facial expressions like he's about to pounce on prey or something while he's singing about his dingdang private life!!
What I took away from this video is this guy likes to keep things to himself and he doesn't want to involve people in his business. He isolates himself so much so that he becomes invisible and its driving him insane. He realizes that with all this privacy comes loneliness. So he pleads for someone to seek him and help him open up. But at the same time he is reluctant since his privacy is his comfort zone so he finds ways to defend it. He's also afraid of the uncomfortable truths that his private life will reveal about him.
This is the song i need to hear when its 3 am. Time has stopped, my children are asleep upstairs. There is no yesterday, no tomorrow. Only me alone in the darkness, unable to understand how i have come to this place, this age and time. What i really want to know, has it always been this way?
Holy, my terminally inattentive brain has a tendency to click off this song after the first minute and is unknowingly responsible for the fact I never found out until now that it's literally after that point that the song gets good, like, really fucking good.
I connected to this song on so many cathartic levels when I happed upon it about 6 years ago. Still do to a much lesser extent. Listen/ watch/ dance wildly to multiple times a week. A permanent on my playlist. A most welcome addition to my life. Thank you.

I grew up in west Virginia and boingo had a following there, a surprisingly large following.
This is my private life
I have no friends to fear
I've got no problems, no cross to bear
If you can find me
Come and get me out of here
This is my private place
Everything is neat and clean
The skeletons are hidden in the closet
This is my private place
Come and get me out of here
This is my private life
This is my private life
This is my private life....
These are my private things
There they are against the wall
The dirty pictures, religious objects
These are my private things
Come and get them out of here
This is my private bed
This is where I lie at night
Staring at a lightbulb hanging on the ceiling
Waiting for a dream to
Come and get me out of here
Here in my humble room at night
I often wonder what goes on out there
What makes them run so scared
I often stare at the people passing by
But they can't see me through my window shades
Just like I'm not even there
This is my private life
This is my private life
This is my private life
There's something dangerous I like
This is my private life
I know my problems aren't your fault
What I really want to know:
Has it always been this way?
This is my private life
This is my private life
This is my private life
Come and get me out of here

Fun, yet crushingly depressing at the same time.

don't worry, its your private quarantine.

I can't be the only one mesmerized by Steve Barteks hair doing it's own thing as he's playing.
He's so melodramatic in mannerisms but in a very entertaining way
This is definitely the guy that would team up with Tim Burton for 30+ years
..and Matt Groening.
Honestly after reading this and thinking about it, this DOES kinda feel like a musical number

Just heard this song for the first time last week and I love it. Danny seems pretty depressed for a guy who has Oingo Boingo doing shows in his room.
This is one of the last bands I recall having to have their albums the day they were released. I don't recall being disappointed with any of them. I have not dug into the vault to revisit this music nearly enough over the years.

The incredible talent of Danny Elfman notwithstanding, Boingo was an AMAZING band.
This dude would have been an amazing Joker.
i agree that he should have had a role as a Joker's henchman in
1989 Tim Burton's Batman.
Spot on
He gives me more Cletus Kasady vibes. There's something dangerous he likes
Glad to see this has MILLIONS of views, because this band is one of the best ever.
:} ........................(or find... lol)
I also love that Danny E & OingoB weren't afraid to be uncommon.
T h e E n d lol
Fuckin 'A man, you said it. I don't know much about the mechanics but ITA all the way on the sound.
With Oingo Boingo, I clearly visualize who's playing what and hear each instrument unlike all the other bands where it all blurs together.
Bad mixing has been around for ages. In truth there aren't that many records in which all the instruments are clear and distinct
@@Rainbow_Quartz this seems like quite the complement
So much more than a band. Oingo Boingo was an enigma.
Listened to this and now I can tell the future using a comic book and change my face at will. Thank you Oingo Boingo brothers!
Most underrated group of the 80s. Such a shame this song didn't get more air time.
They were far from underrated
@@MH-zg5yw theyre underrated now. youll rarely ever hear anyone mention oingo boingo when talking about the 80s
I sure know the feeling :)

This is the only song I fully identify with, and I fucking hate that
Nah fuck me I still hate myself I want to burn

Your response to a song about the sadness of crushing loneliness is to isolate? I think you misunderstood stomething
Why am I obsessed with this video? Why have I been playing it repeatedly, daily, for like two weeks now?? How did my roommate come to be obsessed with this song separately from me at the same time???
