This song is AMAZING live!! Don’t count this song out until you’ve a live version. I have personally found that post-Alan albums often need multiple listens to get under your skin.
This is one of the albums that I like the most and with the most personality within their latest works. The sound concept of this album is a combination of Blues with Electronica...but not just any type of electronic, but it is very rough and minimalist, with rough and strong sounds, it feels very mechanical, with some arpeggios very from the 80's and dark, it is an album with a dark and melancholic sound at times, which is one of the things that Depeche knows how to do better than anyone. From the next song you will notice more the Blues style of the album, it is a very sexy album with a very wild and expressive voice from Dave, one of my favorite albums for sure.
The algorithm brought this to me and I can't believe I missed it. I've been following your DM journey (while mixing in other vids) since Blasphemous Rumours and I think it was just last week I didn't realize I wasn't subscribed.... I just thought I was, I guess it was just the algorithm kept bringing you back up as I was watching things of yours regularly lol. Anyhoo, looks like I missed missed this one since and glad I did by accident now!
@@SephPlays I think it's an awesome and refreshing thing that you don't. I never noticed you don't and thinking about that it strongly occurs to me that that is something I love about your videos. Everyone here already knows how to use the buttons. That they are there. What they are for. If someone wants to or not, that's what they'll do. If they're someone prone to forgetting to or prone to checking, they still will whichever it is. Take that example of me: I didn't think to because I assumed I was because I saw your videos show up each time you released one. You reminding people to subscribe wouldn't have made me check, as I thought I already was. Those channels I do subscribe to it is never because they've reminded folks. I've done so because I liked whatever it was, knew I wasn't subscribed, and understand how YT buttons work. Asking people to subscribe may've been a pleasant passing reminder years and years ago, but now it comes across mainly as an annoying, begging, off-putting action. Your mentioning you don't made it finally come to my brain that you don't and how, again, refreshing that makes your videos. It's a darn highlight relief. A very, very belated THANK YOU for not. So,yeah, lol, that's my opinion.
@@SephPlays Sorry for a second response, but this is still bouncing around in my brain with a detail that came up about it I wanted to add: I stressed how nice it is to have your videos not have that since it's become something one can't escape anywhere and has gotten obnoxious at this point... but there's an additional angle to that. How you open and close your videos without those sorts of things and instead approach it as having a bit of a chat or sharing an interest with folks watching makes them very friendly feeling. It's like a pleasant visit. The subscribe reminders are also reminders that this is a business to the person running their channel. A part of why they are so annoying is that they strip the personal nature away. Your videos not having that lend a lot to the feeling of just a pleasant time with a friend sort of thing.

This was the opening song on the Delta Machine tour! It was great live! That said, you should go back & play all the demos that were on the SOTU deluxe box set!
You forgot to do the B-Sides from Sounds of the Universe, also the normal version of Oh Well and even some of the demos from previous albums that were part of the package you got if you got the deluxe edition of SOTU. On this album, it's very blues inspired and is the final of the trilogy that they did with Ben Hiller before James Ford (both Spirit and Memento Mori) and Marta Sologni (just Memento Mori), when you get to Soothe My Soul, there's two versions of the same video (one that was shortened for the Single and one is from the album (extended version))
Hi Seph, I think you missed all b-sides from Sounds of the universe (not counting "Oh well" remix), or like with Playing the angel you will react to them later cause you started new album beforehand

Almost turned this off because the beginning was just weird. Am glad I didn’t, once it got past sounding like when my brother was just starting trumpet and trombone it was fantastic. Not at all fond of the brass beginner bit.
I remember listening to this song for the first time, the day the album was published back then in 2013. I'm a DM fan since 2012 so this was the first album release of my favourite band that I ever witnessed actively, and this was the first song of it. The beginning was indeed pretty boring, but once the chorus hit, I had instant goosebumps.
So you skipped all the b-sides of Sounds of the Universe? There were still plenty of songs left: Light, Ghost, The Sun and the Moon and the Stars etc. Also the acoustic version of Come Back… Delta Machine marked a return to a more modern, richer and sonically deeper sound. Composition-wise it is kind of a mixed bag. Welcome to my world is a fine song though. The switch between verse and chorus is beautiful. The vocals have this late-Depeche-Mode beatle-esque feel. It is obviously influenced by the Revolver/Sgt. Pepper/White Album period of the Beatles. Only sad that it doesn’t keep building up. The album/producer Ben Hillier got quite some criticism for not making enough out of the material. But the formula of „electronic Delta Blues“ works pretty well overall.
So you could say you are in Depeche mode ? See what i did there ? ... a mode of depeche... like it's a state of mind... the mode of depeche... Oh never mind, I tried. 😁
Agree, the song's chorus is beautiful. Beautiful, Depeche mode style. The first verse is sung stripped down without background chords, which makes the melody quite dry and a bit bland. Had I been Depeche mode, I would have started the first verse of the song with the arrangement of the second verse, at least with the atmospheric composer in the background which also lifts the melody, in my opinion. I personally like this one much more than the opening track, In Chains, from the previous album. The song is something of a classic M Gore composition, and with a better arrangement the song would have risen further. One can, as usual, wonder how this song would have sounded if mr. A Wilder had to join in and turn the levers...
Totally agree about the beginning. It's too dry, no real atmosphere. This is where Alan would have ramped up the quality. I noticed since he left they got from sampling, only relying on synths alone. Gone are those real world sounds that a song like this desperately needs. This sounds like one of Martin's demos. BTW what happened to the b sides? They're worth it trust me.
Personally the worst song on this album is The Child Inside but every other song is good especially Broken,Heaven,Alone,Soothe My Soul and all of the Bonus Tracks

You are able to hear the differences or lack of differences in many cases between the original demos and the final versions for many of these songs. You could essentially listen to two different versions of this album.
