Seph, I’m a little surprised you like this track. I haven’t heard it in a very long time and almost forgot about this song which describes a dysfunctional, codependent relationship or possibly unable to escape from the hold drugs can have on a person. Unfortunately, I don’t remember seeing this live, but maybe they didn’t do it in the date I saw them.
So far you appear to like the majority of Exciter. Which means that you really should never listen to people in the comments, saying that Depeche Mode hasn't produced good music anymore after Alan left. Always form your own opinion, also for the next albums! I really dig Playing the Angel and dislike Sounds of the Universe, but please don't listen to me either! 😉
The title of the documentary of the making of this album was, "Presenting the intimate and delicate side of Depeche Mode" Martin also had a hard time writing the songs. He said he would go months and then try, and was incredibly frustrated because that had never happened before and he was wondering if he had just lost interest in the whole concept of Depeche Mode. Martin also did almost nothing in the studio, and the engineer vowed to never work for them again, as he had to piece together the album with little to no input or help from Martin.
One of my favs of this album! Previously said - They can't deal with the instrumentals. I skip them all. This song, unfortunately didn't get played live.

Im thinking it is a loudspeaker effect, more popular in electronic dance music. It basically bitcrushing track to 16bit and peaking in the middle tones or something. It give such an eerie voice track.
I think you need to take the music for what it is. Many of the Depeche Mode albums have these instrumentals. Not every song have vocals on. And also some of the instrumentals are sonically so well constructed. If you’re open to the fact some of the songs won’t have vocals then maybe you’ll be more open to these little sonic interludes.
This is my favorite from this record. This is the only song from this record that I can occasionally put on. - The bass sound that holds the chord in the chorus is reminiscent of the bass sound in "Fly on the windscreen". Im glad its a double reaction. With instrumentals like these and actual songs afterwords, it would be nice to have more videos like these from now on. I would recommend doing this for the opening to the concert without pausing in between for a seamless transition from the opening to the first song. I can understand why you've become annoyed with just the instrumentals. Your video would have ended on a very negative note if you had not gone into the next song. Keep in mind this album they considered to be "experimental", thus the strange sounds and filters. They could afford to do things they wanted rather than do what everyone else expected them to be.

As an example of personal taste i would put in Sounds Of The Universe to listen to over Exciter anyday , to each their own, we all have our faves.

It’s by no accident that these instrumentals are characterful of video games or films. That’s the DM sense of humour they are integral to their craft.
The next song "good night lovers" is the most beautiful song man. It's soo good

Personally i am happy they havnt really revisited this album on tour much ,just would take away from other songs i much rather hear.

I really like easy tiger, one of the better instrumentals.
The full version of Easy Tiger is far better. Better still in my opinion is the Bertrand Burgalat version. This is so unique it's just fantastic!!
