  • Group B was the most insane era for rallying, incredible cars, amazing speed and some very very brave drivers. I react as they take huge jumps, drift near to spectators and control their cars through very tricky rally stages.

Rallying went wild in the 80s. The FIA wanted to attract more manufacturers and so created a class that would give the designers pretty much free reign, no power limits, no regulations on boost, and whatever exotic materials you liked.
Rally cars over the years have been largely based on road cars, with rules tightening and loosening on how close the relationship has to be, between the stock car, and the ones that actually race the stage.

These were absolutely mad times. I witnessed all this. I went to the Rally of Portugal several times in the early eighties and it was just as insane as you see here. As a teen, I myself was one of these fools and risked my life many many times to take superb pictures, shame on me. It could only end badly and it sure did, when in March 1986 our National Rally Champion ran off the track and hit the crowd with his Ford Escort RS 200, killing three and wounding many more in the opening day. It happened 5 km from where I was. Everybody was horrified, the Rally was cancelled and this accident heralded the beginning of the end for Group B cars. Unquestionably things had gone way too far, both with the power of these cars and the behaviour and sheer number of spectators involved.
But these were wonderful times also. With every Rally of Portugal the whole Country stopped to see. We waited the whole year for this magic week and every Portuguese seemed to know the name of every top Pilot and his team. We absolutely loved them, as if they were The Beatles in the late sixties, or Movie or Soccer Stars. I saw several people crying when Toivonen died...
Superb video. The nostalgia it makes me feel is unbearable.

Always stunned by the Lancia 037, that speed off-road with RWD is mad.
Also, group B cars overall where surprisingly light weight, with 960kg limit for 3000cc engined cars (quattro, RS200, Metro 6R4)
and 890 kg for the Delta Integrale an the 205 T16.
For comparison modern WRC cars weigh minimum of 1350 kg (though including driver and Co-driver).

Keeping the revs in a car up means that it can more easily avail of power. One of the issues with turbo cars is the lag that exists.
1% of a power extra can make all the difference especially when it is repeated hundreds of times.

Memories ;hiking for miles through a forest in Wales and waiting on a freezing mountainside for the Quattros to come through. Listening to the bark and bangs of that amazing engine approaching from the distance as the beans of the spotlights sweep across the night sky. Michele Mouton's Quattro sliding to a halt in front of us as she and Fabrizia Pons leapt out in a cloud of a French and Italian swear words to change a flat tyre.
It's not just the cars that had to change, spectating had to change too with rallies no longer covering multiple stages across huge distances. It was the time that rallying in the UK at least changed so that stages were run multiple times and in different directions which meant that they could better control access, put people in grandstands and charge an entry fee! It also made it safer for drivers because medical and safety cover was less spread out in the same way that saw the end of racing at the Nordschleife.

Personal responsibility for what you did was a bigger thing in the 80th. Imagine how many accidents with spectators could have happened - and how many really happened at the end. That kind of general success of Rallye Sport was also never reached again. It was way more popular and important as it is today. We gained safety, but we also lost a lot of personal responsibility and excitement as spectators.
