What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000-foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road tarmac and 2000-foot drops.

Oh the memories with the Escudo in Gran Turismo back in the day
With the glitched speed
Don't forget the cultus!the Power duo
Escudo Space Program
I was waiting for it ☺️
Just hug the walls go full throttle and win the race by miles without steering 😂😂
Those splitters aren't for aero. They are for chopping trees in case it gets into an accident.
i thought they ship sand with it
😂😂
Literal Splitter I see
So that's what a 'log splitter' is?
💀
Once I obtained the Escudo Pikes Peak in GT2, I won so many nearly impossible races by literally driving it like a pinball off the walls. That thing fully upgraded was stupid fast and completely uncontrollable, but it holds a special place in my heart.
And all tyres on red. lol
I use to tune it to run wheelies lol
I'm not the only one! Hahaha
What a monster.
im not sure i ever figured out how to upgrade it... i just got a tv from the inlaws from 2002 so i could revamp my nostalgia playing these games
Im had the same scenario except its with the Audi Quattro pikes peak in GT7. Really hard to control but rewarding when you place top 3 in an overall championship against Gt cars
As someone who drives a Tacoma, "very loosely based" is pretty accurate. It's got four wheels and the badges are the same.
Exactly
I play a Tacoma of Soulz😉
I play Gran Turismo as well 👍
they've kept the headlights, replaced everything else.
Also it's a pick up
“Yep, it produces 1400 HP and 2800 Nm of torque”. Truck goes straight into a ditch.
and
The answer to the question “can you get torque steer on a RWD?”
It survived though.
Lmao that had me dying
Idk why but I lol when I saw that
Suzuki Escudo, the game genie of Gran Turismo
I miss when Pikes Pike had dirt. It was interesting as each team brought something different to the mountain. Some focused on the dirt. Some focused on the road. Some tried to do both.
thats what i loved about pikes peak, the fact that it had to be versatile and less specialized to high grip surfaces like most race vehicles today. it also had the hidden benefit of being safer; lower cornering speeds on high altitude corners
They killed it's uniqueness. There are paved tracks all over, pikes peak didn't need to be one of them
@@konic40 you do know that its also a public road right? The government paved it because they were gonna get sued for environmental damages if they didnt.
Keyword…. “Tried”
@@bentrod3405 environmental damages from a dirt road?
The Suzuki will forever be my mental image of a "Pike's Peak car"
for me its the audi quattro
Blame Grand Turismo 1 for that.
@@ElectronicPleasure too right!
For me it is the Audi Sportquattro
Even after watching this my fave is still Rohrl’s run in the Audi S1 E2.
Walter is THE legend, agreed.
well.. its not exactly like the E2 .. bigger wings and more horsepower
yeah, I was really surprised to not see the Audi on the list
In my eyes all records set on the dirt are the ones. lost interest now the asphalt has been laid.
Mine is Ari Vatanen with peugeot 405
Personal favourite: Saab 9-3 viggen 4x4. Built and raced by Per Eklund and his fellas in a shed with only 10 weeks before the event. His record stood for a very, VERY long time
Mine too. Definitely should've been on this list because of that record and since it looked pretty crazy with the front wing.
@@ACPBA The big wings were mounted on the car for the second outing in 2002. The first time the car ran in 2000, it just had a small wing at the back.
@@TheRedSphinx That's right. Sorry, my bad! The first one was still a crazy Saab though.
@@ACPBA Yeapp. I actually grew up not to far from Eklund's workshop in Arvika where he built his cars. This was 2000, so I was doing my mandatory military service at that time. But I remember people around town talking about his Pike's Peak project. Though Saab contributed next to nothing to the project. The engine was built by Trollspeed, that built a whole bunch of engines for the Swedish rallycross elite at the time. Though they went bankrupt a few years ago. The transmission was all Subaru, since that's what he had been driving before he went back to Saab in the late 90's. The car is now located at the Arvika Car Museum, along some of his rally cars.
@@TheRedSphinx Nice! I'm a fan of Per's, not least because of his history with Saabs. I haven't met him in person but I remember seeing him in Oulu, Finland back in 2010 when Toomas Heikkinen was driving with Per's Teams Saab 9-3 in the Finnish Rallycross series. It was his only season in Finland and he won the championship that season. As a Saab driver myself I'm glad to see Saabs in motorsports since there has been so little attendance after the 80's, I think, when Saab discontinued their official programs.
Love to see the Suzuki Escudo making it in the list, love that car.
My go to car in gt4
SPEEEEEDY BOX
iconic pikes peak race car
It was my wheelie car in Gt3
1:56 I like how the editor just dropped in a video of the truck flying off the road without any relation whatsoever to what Scott was saying.
Why?Its truck it needs be there for reason:):)
I laughed so hard when it yeeted off the hill 🤣🤣
"Finishes at over fourteen hundred feet"
He's not wrong, but I don't think that's what he meant ro say.
No, he just left off a trailing zero (14,000 instead of 1,400). But what’s an order of magnitude among friends?
@@leumas75 probably an order of magnitude
@@THESLlCK I mean, sure, TECHNICALLY. But it’s among friends, so… you get this order of magnitude, I’ll pick up the next one. Right?
@@leumas75 Oh sorry, I see my mistake, it's an order of magnitude *among friends*
@@THESLlCK No worries!
That Tacoma's wastegate is just legendary
Thats not even a wastegate sound........
Ok?
@@288gto7 Yeah, like where is the wastegate sound he is talking about?....
@@ElMosqito you cant find it because there is no such thing as „wastegate sound“. Wastegates dont make a sound other than the engine sound itself because you know; exhaust gas also flows through them. Stutu sound is called turbo flutter or the compressor surge. When you get off the gas and throttle valve closes, the high pressure air cant go into the intake manifold so it reverses back into the compressor side of the turbo and makes that sound
@@288gto7 Dude, i know all that stuff, im modifying cars for a living.
And for me there is something you can call a "wastegate sound", but mostly when car is equipped with screamer pipe (pipe from external wastegate streight to atmosphere instrad of back to main exhaust system). More so, sometimes it sounds really good
The whole video I was just waiting for Escudo, come on, every OG Gran Turismo fan knew it would appear here!!
Ahem, the Escudo appeared only in Gran Turismo 3. OG fans wouldn't know about it. 😂
@@AnttiBrax Bro...no...
GT3 was on PS2, and Escudo first appeared in GT2 which was on PS1.
And also, it appeared in GT4 as well but was nerfed. Do your research better 😝
also maybe because it was in the thumbnail ?
@@AnttiBrax how embarrassing, the escudo made its first appearance in gt2
@@ayrtttfilms7249 broooooo 😳 I am, like, so embarrassed because I swear I didn't even look at the thumbnail 😧 Or has the thumbnail been changed meanwhile?
0:57 is compressor stall which has nothing to do with wastegates.
The banks power truck had a twin screw supercharger blowing into the turbo, which is the coolest feature of the truck! I think they had compound turbos in the beginning but needed more throttle response, so at least there have technically been 2 turbos on the truck at some point.
You missed Ari Vatanen's one handed drive in the 405T16 Gp.B 😕
as well at the audi sport quattro
@@fanaticjay3825 was it Michele Mouton driving it?
@@samiurrahmanshah1981 she drove the 1st one i believe and i think walter rohl drove the one in talking about the e2 also if you like group b stuff i posted a tribute about it on my channel
@@fanaticjay3825 subbed to your channel ☺️
I was about to say what about the 405 T16 & the Audi!
5:09 Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peaks, that brings back some childhood memories
same
A lot*
One of my favourites is the peugeot 405 T16 driven by Ari Vatanen
A pity the road at Pikes Peak is completely sealed now. It was awesome watching the massive four wheel drifts that they used to do. It was like Group B still existed.
Loeb was able to set a legendary time with what is essentially an analogic car. The VW that came after is a spaceship
Loeb is a straight-up legend in his own right, an amazing driver for sure.
There was nothing analog about Loeb’s car 😂.
That VW is boring, it’s like watching scelectric toy racing. A spaceship, it is not.
@@mat5267 And her it comes the hate from the people who incredibly will miss noise and vibrations on cars!... Same people was missing the poo and pee on their faces 100 years ago when horses where replaced... Mate, get over it and assume that EV are just better.
@@JP-xd6fm Dude, liking noise and vibrations from cars is not the same as being nostalgic for when the horse in front of you ripped ass when you were on your way to the shops.
The craziest thing on his run is he reached the rev limiter in 6th gear in one of the last straight line near the top (over 240 kph)
Meaning he could have been even quicker with a slightly longer gear ratio
I loved the Audi Quadro S1 on the dirt track. Was just beautiful to watch how they danced around the corner with a car that even at altitude had more horsepower than most racers could handle. From the new ones I actually like the VW IDR. The electric motor has unmatched efficiency with regenerative braking, and torque-vectoring allows for grip you can`t get with transmissions and diffs. If you get it to a reasonable weight it's just nuts how fast these are.
I remember that twin engined Golf, sounded like a pack of Super Vee's with the echos through the trees at Pikes Peak!
The electric VW ran a siren so you could hear it coming.
The Peugeots in the late 80s were managed by Jean Todt, later of Ferrarri, and ran full side skirts for improved ground effects.
Ah, those were the days after group B when they were looking for a place to run their toys where there were no rules to get in the way.
The engineering behind the linkage and what ever they used that would be needed to sync/shift gears on two transmissions at the same time is actually pretty insane
@4:35 “And ends at over 14 Hundred feet.” Should be “14 Thousand feet”.
The road being a mix of dirt and tarmac took away some of the mechanical advantage and made for better drivers being able to compete with more expensive teams. I’m afraid that the paving of the whole road may have killed the homegrown hero’s.
I mean it IS over 1400 ft
same thoughts...made the man become part of the machine
Let’s go just subbed last night and new banger this morning 💪💪
This man never misses all his vids are amazing. And same with you slap wish I could play with you again
yooo its slap
Oh man I loved your pixel car racer videos lol😂
Yooooo what's good Slap
I love the Tacoma because for it's time it was absolutely crazy but no one talks about it
That was my fav "hillclimb" car in Dirt 3 (quoting hillclimb cuz it was called something else on Dirt 3), looking at the vid it was just as cool irl as it was in game
@@mrbones2235 same! i had insane times with it in the trailblazer courses, would always drive that beast
Taking my Tacoma up it next year... Granted... Mine has a bit less HP and will take a LOT of extra time!
Peugeot 405 T16 GR Pikes Peak. Ari Vatanen. Climb Dance. One of the greatest car based videos of all time.
1:57 in addition to the torque, it also does not fly.
What happened to Ari Vatanen's run up the mountain in the 405T16 @ a time of 10:47:77 on a dirt track from start to finish and sometimes using one hand on the wheel and the other to block the Sun.
Love how this was recommended to me ahead of the 100th running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and the return of the Suzuki Escudo to GT7
Fun fact: from 1946 to 1970, Pike's Peak Hillclimb was a points-paying race in the AAA/USAC American Open-wheel Championship, what's IndyCar today. Imagine taking those era of cars, the big front engine roadsters and the early mid and rear engine cars up the mountain on all dirt.
1:56 yikes!!!! great video on truly amazing vehicles
You forgot the SAAB that was more or less done in a shed
F1 Video Request: I've always noticed how clean and organized the garages are. The drawers in the toolboxes are neatly organized and labeled (usually in a language I don't know from the videos I've seen). Could you do a video on the mechanic's perspective when damages or tune-ups cause the garage to get a little dirty? I'd love to know more about their process. Thank you for great content and great videos!
Sad thing is, I've been to the Pikes Peak hill-climb twice, and gone are the glory days of watching from anywhere you'd like as long as it's not on the road. You have to stand/sit 20 yards back from the road, and you're likely to see about 3 minutes of cars driving by (in total) over the whole day.
We snuck into the pits the first year we went, and my brother spoke to some folks about possible internships. The next year, nobody was allowed in the pits. We decided it wasn't worth the drive out there, and haven't been back in five years.
Boxeer's TDI Beetle is pretty sweet! Wish i could catch that thing running
Nice Video !!!
Thanks for that very much !!!
This is so fun. Just a bunch of people making the best thing they can with whatever resources they got. What a blast this must be to attend. Colorado is really hard not to love when you visit the mountains.
Paving the entire surface ruined the race. Half and half is what made it the monumental challenge that it was.
what about the Dacia Duster with a mid mounted Nissan GT-R engine
does James May know
@JOAKIM JEPPSSON No that one was presented & racing back in 2011 here :
ua-cam.com/video/h35ltBfaLA4/v-deo.html
But the problem is that wasn't a Dacia Duster it was a Nissan tech covered with a Dacia body.. at least the 208 Peugeot Ti driven by S.Loeb was 100% Peugeot..
The only cool fact is that in 2011 the Pikes Peak was still a mix surface of dirt & paved asphalt making the run more dangerous for pilots but more exciting to watch..
Sounds amazing!
....anyway have you watched the Grand Prix yesterday?
The craziest Pikes Peak story is when RUF drove 2 widebody CTR2s on the road (the prototypes of the CTR2 Sport, which they called the CTR2 Yellowbird) to Pikes Peak, took the top 5 in the division they were in (2nd place and 4th place respectively), and then just drove the cars back to base on the road because they were road legal.
Amazing! And there is no chance of contact against another car as in conventional racing. My favorite post was when Volkswagon's electric took the top spot. That machine had an amazing sound.
@5:38 This picture for me as a little boy, age 6 who just got his playstation 1 and Gran Turismo 2 redefined my love for cars. When I saw this car in the game I got goosebumps and ultra excited. At that time, I had no idea what turbos where or horsepower, all I knew it was the fastest car in the game until 23 years later I found out about the Nissan 180 sx Drag car. Anyway, this brought back so many wonderful memories.
Missed Per Eklunds build in a garage on that list :) nice list thou!!
Which was your favourite car? I love that MAD Ford F1 Trcuk, Old Smokey!

The vw golf is by far my favorite especially because it's a true monster and there's nothing like it
Monster Tajima's Escudo was a huge favourite of mine back in the day. Used it alot when playing Gran Turismo too.
The volkswagen IDR is my personal favorite
The Freightliner is amazing. Who the hell thinks, you know what I'm going to race up Pikes Peak? A freaking semi(lorry). Just insane but so cool.
Peugeot 405 Turbo 16.
You know why. 😉
Great video from my favorite race, and that on my birthday. Juuuhhhuuiiiiii! Thank you. My favorites are the red Suzuki Escudo. I remember that car from the videogame Gran Tourismo. And the Peugeot that was driven by a Rally-champ S. Loeb. It's insane, well, every participant have a insane car. Even Aaron Kaufmann, from Arclight Fab, who also driven a car at Pikes Peak, i missed that one.
When a saw the second yankee garbage pickup truck(into the woods😅) i knew i couldn't take this blog serious!🏁
I am still remembered a lot about Escudo and Cultus PPV, the best cars in Gran Turismo 2.
One of the best*
I immediately thought about Tow Mater after seeing the thumbnail 😂
that IDR is insane as hell. Happy its in the video
It's so nice seeing the platform of the sx4 I love that car! Little tank in the snow and if modified.... A monster
I wish it was still unpaved. The Tacoma will always be my favorite.
I think it's kind of a shame they paved the whole thing. It's a bit lame that what's basically an electric LMP car has the record in what's traditionally been more of a rally-style race.
@@soldadoryanbr7776 what you have typed has literally nothing to do with what the original comment says. He is complaining about the style of top overall record holder cars not their powertrains. If this stage was still gravel, vw could have came up with a fully electric polo wrc style car and run it there.
@@288gto7 wtf?this type of thing is happening so often, I think I have ADHD, thanks for pointing out!
Well they didn't pave it to make the racing easier; they paved it because outside of the Hillclimb, it's a road used as part of a national park and the road bed was eroding too much for safe use of the tour buses in anything but perfect weather.
@@angry_ike7628 Uh, no.
They paved it because the Sierra Club sued for dust and "pollution" of gravel in streams, and the powers that be didn't want to spend the funds to maintain it as a dirt course.
This was the same time of the funding of the Broncos stadium fiasco, with taxpayers being lied to and ultimately stuck with the bill.
Some sports get governmental support, others do not.
Hi Scott, great video as always.
Could you do a more detailed video about the compound turbo system? It sounds interesting
Pikes Peak has a bit of the feel of the Isle of Man TT -- one mistake or component failure and it could well be lights out. From this point on it will be hard for ICE cars to compete with electric given the short duration, emphasis on acceleration, and the thin air.
How the hell do you forget the all time record holder for partially gravel? (that will never be broken).
This video made me want to play Gran Turismo so damn hard -_-
Same and f1 rqce weekend always makes me want to sim race or play f1 too
Loved goin the race every few years. Best part was living in Colorado Springs. There is a museum for the Hill Climb in Old Colorado City between Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs.
I was there the year the Peugeot took the record. That Banks freightliner is wicked. About the time you here the sirens, the electric bikes/cars are flying past.
The Plaid. It'll be awesome if Probst takes the no.1 spot with the Plaid.
You've got that elevation thing completely wrong... its an elevation of about 1'500 meters, which is about 1 mile
this is so crazy! love to see the clips
I remember the 2003 Pikes Peak in late June sitting on the barely there snow caps on the dirty end of the course. The Escudo was there and it was like the President strolled up on a horse. Everyone was taking pictures of it. Got to meet Mark Lovell and Shane Mitchell! (Mark and his co-driver Roger Freeman crashed bad at their very next race: Oregon Trail Rally) RIP.
I was actually there to see the f100. Besides some of the quicker Subarus, it was probably my favorite.
Did you see the diesel beetle? Its sick
Top tip: "VW" has 4 syllables, "Volkswagen" has 3 - "VW" takes longer to say
this is factchecked true
Not in German though, speak it like "Fouw Waih"
And in English to me it feels like saying "Vowlkswaegen" is still more effort than saying "Wedouble-u" despite having 1 less syllable.
@@Lukas.99 It's pronounced "vokes-vag-en" in German and English... and I just explained it's literally quicker to say the full name because of the syllables - it demonstrably isn't easier to say VW
I speak German and never heard a native English speaker say "Vollksswaaagenn".
But I agree that your writing is better and closer to the English pronounciation, although to also include the English way of speaking the vowels I would suggest "Vowkes-vaigen".
@@Lukas.99 He wasn't speaking German, he was speaking English... and 3 syllables is quicker to say than 4, that's the literal point behind syllables...
Peugeot had some of the greatest cars.. 208 t16 and the 205 t16/405 t16 ..
And then they have the WRC cars, 24h cars, paris Dakar cars, rallycross.. they have build some of the most amazing cars ever..
Pike’s Peak WAS a battleground. Then they paved it.
Long live Pike’s Peak Celica!
Awesome a vid on pikes peak!
Would love to see the Audi Quattro on this list, that’s a pikes peak monster too
When I lived in Grand Junction I'd run my old ford f250 farm truck up to the top and just enjoy the view for the day. Quite a relaxing and beautiful place when cars aren't screaming by. lol
Wonders of automotive technology. As usual, great video. Thanks
The day they started paving the road used in this race is one of the saddest days in the history of auto racing.
That's the blow off on the Tacoma, not the waste gate
Its neither. This thing doesnt have BOV/BPV, it just reverses back to compressor and compressor surge happens and creates the sound
Rod Millen,s Toyota Tacoma i would say is the 'fastest' machine i have seen on Pikes Peak, i am sure he would broken the 10min record had it not broken down! 1000hp from a 2.1ltr four cylinder, impressive!
I will always love the Pikes Peak Tacoma! Old memories!
Some cars are homemade.
The Lovefab NSX is one of my favourite homemade cars, it's like an NSX that had a nasty accident with a piece of farming equipment or something.
YOU ARE CLIPPING!!! PLEASE DON'T RUIN MY EARS😃
I personally liked Pikes Peak better when it wasn't paved. I understand why they paved it but they took away some of the mystic when they did. It's still an amazing place to race though.
fun fact, the engine from the first car you mentioned, (Rod Millen's Tacoma) is a Toyota 503E which he also used in his celica on pikes peak. He set the pikes peak record in 1994 with his celica. and the engine was used earlier in the legendary Toyota 222d rally car built for group S. later the 3s-gte was based off the 503E.
Dude your mic is clipping CONSTANTLY, it’s way too hot, turn that shit down. This is basic shit.

Can't wait to see how good Ken Block's & Hoonigan's new car performs at Pikes Peak
You're so brilliant 👏 kuddos to your channel. Keep up the great work and information 👍
Chuckles Garage and Ol' Smokey are a local hero in here in Santa Rosa, I worked for a local autoparts company and got to meet the team

Escudo in GT3 on PS2 was fire. I still remember it to this day.
If you dig Old Smokey there’s a number of excellent Hoonigan UA-cam videos that are worth watching.
I can't wait to watch it tomorrow. I traveled up from New Mexico to watch. It'll be my first ever race seen live in person
Wow, what a first race to witness! I can't lie, I'm jealous. One day, one day I will make the trek.
That Suzuki Escudo brings back the good ol' days of Gran Turismo
Old smokey has by far the most complex force induction system ever. You should hear him explain it. There's and intercooler for every turbo which is at least 3
I know you don't race bikes, but I think it would still be cool to see an Isle of Man TT video with your opinions and informative style. Love the channel and hearing your take on everything man! Cheers!
That Tacoma is something else. RalliSport Challenge anyone??

Guy on the right: Alright, I've got my photo, now lets see if he's still breathing
Every spoiler was "the largest splitter you've ever seen."
Suzuki has made some real monsters to ride up this track. The Escudo Pikes Peak is the OG, at least for us Playstation users back in the day.
Old pikes peak track is gold.
I love the race up Pikes Peak, one of the best weeks here in Colorado Springs :)
4:59 Aaa yes! My most favorite car! Suzuki Escudo!
As a retired truck driver I gotta go with the Freightliner Cascadia. Mine had a sleeper on it and was usually pulling 80,000 pounds of freight. I'd take a couple of hours to climb Pikes Peak. That's if I could breath at that elevation!
Bonneville Speed Week and Pikes Peak Hill Climb are the top of my bucket list
