- These rally moments are absolutely HUGE. Time for something a little unusual, but a lot of fun - when I was a kid I used to love watching rally compilations of videotape. Here are some of the best rally moments I could find online with a little reaction and driver's explanation too.

I want to go rallying!
The "Samir, please" thing is a bit more complicated. Lets put it this way, they are both good at what they do, well, for local rally but it was very, very difficult day. The driver has been doxxed and harrassed because of that video... So it is a bit sad case of things taken a bit out of context. I think he stopped racing after the memes came out. Don't take my words as a fact, i could be remembering somethings wrong but i haven't felt great watching those clips anymore. They kind of ruined someones passion.
Well if you lived in Finland you could rally anytime
You should watch Subaru Rally team Usa's Launch Control. It has magnificent rallys

rallye drivers: laught when they survive
Rallye drivers also laugh when they pass someone, they passes are more fun than in circuit racing.
@@dosescopetastengo6581 he knows it, in rally if u pass someone it means u made much better time than guy ahead of you and that does put a smile on your face.
@@dosescopetastengo6581 you're an idiot that's taking the word "pass" completely wrong in this entire scenario. They know you can't pass for position like in course racing. But that does not mean you cannot pass someone in a rally race.
@@dosescopetastengo6581 you're an idiot. You don't understand what we are saying. Reread what we've all said. Maybe you might smarten up
@@dosescopetastengo6581 I've got to say you're in the wrong here. They know you can't pass for a position on the course because it's all based on chrono, what they're saying is that if one driver is much quicker on a stage than another and so "passes" them physically on a stage i.e. drives past them, it must be funny because you aren't supposed to be able to do that normally
Kinda surprised he didn't know Samir until now.
Haha ,the story goes it was the first rally after a long injury break for the driver. So he was out of shape. And the pace note calls were different than he was used to.
The full stages are online so it wasn't that bad. Just when pieced together it's hilarious.
What's hilarious is that Samir is a fairly decent rally driver. He won a few stages and even almost won the Indian Rally Championship
@@DrSabot-A Was he having a bad day? Or are the other Indian Rally drivers just really bad?
@@michaelsteffensen6844 He had a long break from rally due to some injury, so maybe that affected his skill? Maybe, i dont know
9:36 MEDIUM LEFT!
Fun fact: Samir is actually a highly distinguished and previous top rally driver since his debut in 1992 in India. He had an injury of some sorts and had a lengthy stint of no racing, to which he came back and obviously was a little rusty (but actually ended up finishing 3rd in points in the Indian National Rally Championship that year). As it turns out, this was not the original audio, and an executive from another team had this made as a sort of "mud sling". Yohan Chetna, the business man, ended up getting arrested for the video and had a pending investigation. The co-driver, who had 20+ years of professional experience, actually ended up losing a contract for a major international event in Australia as a result of the spoof video.
Bruhh😂😂
Damn if that's true, what an insane story. Still, it cracks me up every time 😂

Yeah, I feel the same but with woodworking.

Happens to me to many years ago practicedriving with my father, I was late out and took that 90° turn to fast and had to drive on two wheels for 30-40 meters after that, my father wasn't that happy afterwards, neither the time we drove on a small gravel road and I was comming in to fast so the car started to wobble and I drove 20 meter offroad on the right side before I crossed the road again and drove 15 meters offroad on the left side an 10 meters more on the right side untill I finally got in on the road again, after that he still let me på drive with him but I wasn't allowed to drive as fast as before when I practice, but he knew that I had bought my own car 4 years before I was allowed to practice drive for the driverlicense and drove arround on small lone gravelroads and on winter ice I never drove that car inside town before I got the license,, but I guess it wouldn't work in todays world without anybody of our neighbours in the village or some others will call the police, I had a friend that did the same so we came in two cars 14 years old when the age to start practicing was 18 then.
Anders Persson how old were you when this happened?
My dad teaching me to shift was brutal. My folks never actually taught me hot to drive, I had friends let me drive their vehicles and my dad teaching me to drive stick. I stalled it twice and never got another chance till I got a job working on hydrocavs and I then had to teach myself how to shift in a Peterbilt.

This was fun but still largely just a compilation of fun rally clips like others in UA-cam.. I think there was an opportunity here for Scott to go a bit more in depth, perhaps explain what's a Scandinavian flick through an onboard etc. Also since we're doing different branches of motorsport, can I suggest a similar video about ovals? Nascar, Indycar, dirt oval footage, etc

let's take a minute and appreciate those WRC helicopter pilots, those guys are insanely skilled.

They're rallying in the air.
I wouldn't say the pilots as much as the cameramen that have to keep the rally car in frame without directly controlling the helicopter

In rally, and only in rally:
- you can fly across a dirt finish line at 100+ mph missing a wheel
- jump 10ft in the air, land it, and keep driving like nothing happened, multiple times during the race
- roll many times at high speed, land on your wheels, and keep going like it didn't happen
Basically, the goal of rally is to get from A to B as fast as physically possible under any circumstances. Practice rally, and you'll have the driving skills of god himself.

Love how rally stages sometimes take place on little strips of asphalt that would barely be considered a bike path here in North America.
Best roads.
It's a normal road in Europe (maybe a little tight) we are used to drive to.
@@ciano5475 which part Europe. The East side or the West side
@@dr.science_0177 Dr Science forgot north and south.
european roads are much narrower than north american roads because they were originally planned and built hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years ago before cars existed. most were walk paths and pretty much the widest thing they had to account for were horse drawn carts. that's still somewhat true for older north american cities like new york, but out here in a modern urban planned city like LA even the narrowest road is usually wide enough to comfortably fit two lanes of traffic plus parking.

Certainly they need the most customized seats to accommodate their huge brass balls. That much is hard to argue.

its SOOOOO awesome that you've put videos like this together. Rally has shrunk over the year, and i hope support from guys like you will help us grow once again.
Imagine having to read coded pacenotes to your driver in a level tone of voice while he does 100 mph on 2 wheels down a gravel road
level tone is a bit of a cultural thing lol have you ever heard Carlos' Sainz co-driver? Good god you'd swear he was having a seizure. Then you have the Finns. That's a whole other subject but they sound almost bored. I love the Finns :) And then there is that amazing moment when Colin was having a particularly Colinesque moment and Nicky Grist interjects "for f*** sake listen to me Colin" in the level tone you mention, and straight back to the pace notes. They had an off later in that rally and when Colin was asked what happened he spat out, sounding as Scottish as a person could "I don't know, why don't you ask the Welsh Wizard over there" with a nod of the head to Nicky:D
Just look at the notes and enunciate and hope it works out. I could do this easy I have plenty of experience doing this riding passenger in my GF's car. Looking at directions on my phone, look up "oh a city bus is about to pulverize us" look back down at directions " I hope that works itself out"
Level tone? I scream at Jan sometimes when we get in trouble.. Still though. I love my driver :) And we just race a fucking Volvo Amazon... :p

Rally cars make the best daily drivers, if those jumps don't break them day to day is a walk in the park. Thanks for the video review I loved watching this. Rally needs to make a comeback.
Love your work, but this one was special.
Many years ago a midfield rallying friend told me about his weekend night race in the mountains.
He had broken his tailshaft, rolled down to the next check point, and got a lift back up to the spot in the morning to collect the bits.
His description: dirt road. Navigator says as I enter soft left: long straight, flat out. I look at the left at high revs in third, so was doing 90 kph plus. In daylight I couldn't believe I got round it above 60. But the straight. Nav said flat out, so I'd shifted up and floored it. We were doing 130 when the tailshaft went. The straight was barely 100 meters long with a hard right at the end!
My friend was amazed by his own skills when driving fully dialed in. That his Nav would describe the corner as soft, knowing that he would be able to take it in third, then that the straight was "long"!
Rally driving has fascinated me since I was a kid with the Southern Cross rally coming past our home several times.

These rally drivers drive a lot
While that is a widespread belief, it is actually false. Most of them are behind the wheel for the very first time
well pretty much anyone can just buy a car and enter a rally event. It can be quite 'cheap' (compared to any motorsport), so the entry barrier is minimal.. But you cant compare those low level races with the top level rallying..
I thought video at 4:29 is upside down, thought the snow was the clouds and I was so confused how the drivers have such a control upside down 🤦🏻♂️
It threw me off for a second lol
As a person, who sometimes works at rally, some videos are my nightmare. Like, why are there four of five cars parked at the rally track? But the worst are people, not gonna lie. Anyway, it was great so see you reacting to these! :)
Let's take a moment to appreciate the roles of the co-driver and engineers on staff. To be able to hold it together and continue reading pace notes clearly and accurately while trusting your life in someone else's hands is a truly incredible test of mettle.
Not only that, but the engineers who have literally only a few minutes to get a car in competitive shape anywhere from crashes, bent suspension and busted dampers, to complete mechanical failure. The first guy you see in the video is Ari Vatanen, a Finnish driver who previously won the WRC title in '81 (and the only privateer driver to accomplish this!) and his co-driver (I think) Terry Harryman. At this point in time other drivers were beginning to use 4WD cars where this mad lad was still driving RWD like the Opel Manta 400 in the video. At one point in 76 when he was racing with Ford during the British Rally Championship the engineers actually replaced the rear diff of the Mk II RS1800 with a rear diff from a Capri AND MADE IT WORK.

For those who don't know the backstory to the Samir clip, it was originally posted with malicious intent to try and get the co-driver sacked, you can read about it here:
www.autoevolution.com/news/remember-samir-the-bad-rally-driver-turns-out-the-video-was-fake-and-he-s-decent-90865.html
Wow did not know that
Yeah I’m on the co drivers side. That video showed a driver ignoring his co driver which for rally can get both killed
I knew him (Vivek Ponnusamy) from the days when he used co-drive for Karamjit Singh back in 2011. He and Karamjit were competing in Malaysian Rally Championship, I was a spectator back then.
The article doesn't have the best writing style sadly.
The video it's not fake, it'san extract of a 40 minutes video that Samir uploaded to his own webpage. I don't know if the "compilation" was with malicious intent or just for fun, but it's not a fake video
I have had one chance at rallying in my life. After training, I was let loose on a rally-circuit. I say circuit because rather than being on public roads a circuit of sorts is set up on a airfield or other large open area. The rules are the same as for the class of car you are in; it's still a rally but you may go round several times as a "stage." In my case every time I passed a particular set of hay-bales I clipped the wing mirror on my navigator's side as he read the pace-notes. Each time he dutifully reached out and folded the mirror back out. After three times he quietly but firmly said, "Would you stop using my mirror as a f*****g lap counter."
If you think today's rally is insane you should be here in the 80"!
That was pure madness. We used to camp the day before to take a good spot as thousands of people will fill up almost the entire track (no restrictions were you could be in the track back then).
That was in the Rally costa Brava every year, and still today I can close the eyes and feel like I am there again... The sound, the dust, the people cheering, big flags everywhere, the barbecues...
80" freedom please come back, we miss you!
