"most people would say sniper/heisted maven, most busted combo, that's why i lost....but that's not what we are doing here.. we are taking accountability for our losses" 👑👑👑 lets freaking go. we would all improve so much more with this mindset
This video is yet another reason why you are the best Fortnite UA-cam content creator! Not only are you teaching us, but you are doing so by noting your own mistakes instead of presenting yourself as infallible. Can’t say enough good things about this video. Thank you so much!
You mentioned 2 things that were really helpful to me: 1. Don't give up high ground. Too many times I jump down after my opening shot when I could have just played the fight with height advantage. 2. Don't ego challenge. Often I find myself feeling like a sucker, and pushing a 50/50 after he gets an opening tag on me. Or I retreat, heal, and return to a fight against an opponent I know is equal or better in skill, all the while not returning with any kind of advantage. If he wrecked me at first encounter, and I don't have any advantage this time, why would I return? I do it because I don't want to scamper off and lick my wounds, that's humiliating, I want vengeance. I shouldn't return unless I have better cover or high ground or anything to tip the next encounter in my favor. Even when I do return and beat him in a 50/50, I'm typically left 0ne-shot for anyone who wants to 3rd party. Sometimes it is better to run away and lick my wounds. Let that guy be someone else's problem.
1) "Ego challenge" is a perfect term for those situations! Ego has causes us more problems than it solves. 2) You sound like my 5th grade daughter's teacher teaching Fortnite class laying it all out like this. Frankly, I am a 5th grader in Fortnite! 3) I love this content, all the videos we see from UA-camrs these days are their Ws. But I think we learn the most from our Ls. I gotta stop raging quitting and trying to load back in as soon as possible, I need to watch replays of my Ls and learn from them. Another great video, Toby!
Yup, love this type of video. We all make similar types of tactical mistakes. I've also noticed myself giving up the high ground when I smell blood LOL. Like you said, it happens so fast in the moment, it can be hard to tell what mistake you actually made. Replay can be really enlightening.
Great video, Toby. You can learn a lot from failures, especially in a game like this. I always watch my deaths back and try to take something from it. It also has the effect of taking the sting out of a loss if you at least learn something.
I have learned so much in the few videos I have watched from you. The Rotten Twinkie one has resonated the most. Now being new to the game I don’t have the knowledge of the map. But I try my best to rotate to high ground now. And DONT engage in fights I don’t know I can win. The hardest is once engaged and things aren’t going well, if I have a chance, disengage and try to live to fight another day. The goal ultimately is to win. Elims were and are fun. But getting 13-15 points lime and finishing 6th we’re getting old. It did teach me how to fight. As I had a lot of ground to make up. Still need work in up close shit gun battles. But now I try less 3rd partying. Still get 6-10 elims but more wins. In the coming months I’ll hopefully be able to get both. I will say the 20 elim second place was a bitter sweet game for me this season.
Another great video. I have been implementing this approach, and I can testify that it works. Something else to help you improve fast... Rather than, "In the future, I will...," consider using something like, "From now on, I always..." For example: Instead of, "In the future, I will get to the best High Ground position immediately," you could say, "From now on, I always get to the best High Ground position immediately." Instead of, "In the future, I will not take close-range 50/50 fights unless I can create an advantage. Instead, I will use Mobility to leave and get space to reset the fight," you could say, "From now on I always avoid close range 50/50 fights unless I can create an advantage. Instead, I always use Mobility to leave and get space to reset the fight." Also, instead of, "I do not take 50/50 fights," you could (again) say, "I always avoid 50/50 fights. I always maintain distance and use High Ground when possible." This is not just semantics. Research present versus future tense affirmations.
Absolutely! Love it. I think that was taught in the book "with winning in mind" by Lanny Bassham. Totally forgot to use this verbiage - it was what I was aiming for!

Very useful indeed Sir. I have been keeping a journal for the last few weeks now and my game is definitely improving. Thank you so much for your awesome content, it really is very valuable!!
Awesome, thank you, I have been doing game replays to help check my ego to avoid the 50/50 fights. Now, I shall begin writing them down to check for patterns as well. Thank you, sir. Great tips, as always.

Actually come to think of it, you could have a checklist (written at 1st) like 1) are weapons reloaded? 2) health 3) check for enemies 4) get high ground 5) select loot that I need 6) select next target/location 7) ...
Great video! I love this format! It gives great insight to in-game choices by letting us get in the mind of someone who knows what they did wrong and knows how to correct it! More videos, please, of you analyzing your gameplay... victories AND defeats! Thank you sir!
I love you positive reaffirmation Toby. And your overall approach to correcting your bad habits. I’ve just read a book called “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k” and despite its misleading title it’s all about this. Reprogramming. So thank you ❤
Great work! I do know all these things, but, as a casual player with a different day job (but a wannabe full-time streamer) with the lack of repetition in my gameplay I find it hard to establish the muscle memory or remember in the heat of the moment until after the fact… when I’m dead. So thanks for these reminders.
Hey Toby thank you for that very good idea i will start right away when losing writing my mistakes down and my future solutions so that i can learn from it have a nice weekend
i definitely think this was helpful. to think about like we did for band and watch our performances and go over what we screwed up and how to fix it next time.
You can sometimes hold backwards as you inch off it to catch the slope of it. Or you can look for a piece that juts out and try to land on that or mantle onto something as you fall... or a hop flower, etc.
Great idea for a series. Early on I should have written down "Don't charge head-on into a guy standing there with a shotgun pointed at you." Had plenty of time back in the lobby to ponder that move...
After a crash in a race an experienced racer asked my why I crashed. I said I got a false neutral going into the turn had no engine braking so lent a bit harder... He says ahhh ok, so why did you get the false neutral? Hmmm actually I pushed harder deeper into the braking zone... So in his words there is always a reason before the mistake. Taught me a life lesson as well as a racing lesson!!!
The pen and paper thing really does help with memory for example: i am a server and when i would write a table of fours order down I would be able to remember it but now we use a tablet to take the orders and i find i dont remember near as much of their order. Apparently it uses different parts of our brain when writing and it helps with being able to recall it later.
Great content per usual man. I don't know how much harder would it be to use replay mode to breakdown your opponents POV. I think it would be cool and quite helpful to see how exposed were you in a feel of the situations you showed us. Keep up and cheers from Brazil!
I think the replay camera controls are the same regardless of platform (PC vs Console). But I often use the "Drone Free" camera option. And I do what you just said. I place the camera around what the opponents 3rd party POV would be. Just to check how exposed I was at certain angles from their POV. I know you can change the camera to other players. But depending how many players are in the game at a particular point, it can be hard to find the player camera for the player your engaged with, that's why I prefer the free drone or drone attached camera angle best. I also use this sometimes to figure out HOW a player rotated to come into contact with me. Especially if I got ambushed or 3rd Partied. I like to see where they came from, and if I did a poor job of my situational awareness. It's really interesting. I've had a few instances recently where I was scanning and checking my surroundings. But looking away for 5-10 seconds is all it takes to miss a player rotating behind you before they get back behind cover. In my mind I'm saying "I CHECKED behind me, there was no one there!". But on replay, I looked away for 5 seconds. At that's the moment they rotated and I missed it. Doesn't take much somtimes.
I use gameplay camera and watch from there point of view. Was I moving during the fight, could he see me when i was usingright shoulder peak, , can I hear my footsteps, etc. It really helps me realize things I do well and things I should work on.
@@ShawnsLoopwhat I do is right before the fight I click the left side next player button and it always goes to the closest person I am about to fight then I can rewind further if I want. I do love all the options that Fortnite has for replays like the different camera angles and video speed.

U were also predictable at 15:15. The opponent knew u were going to go R/thru the gap-plus u were trapped by the cliff and could not turn if u wanted to.
most obvious mistake: sticking to the same skin after first loss. supersticious, but true

awsome contentman!, aimbot vids showing off trick shots dont help me at all this will def bring more depth to gameplay for me atleast
also @tobywanshinobi thanks for the "taking notes" part at the end and reminding yourself to be positive!
I could get alot of wins but id bored playing the game that way. I like the adrenaline rush im always pushing fights i should not im just being to impatient and it cost me my life lmao
Yes, I think it's OK to push fights but you can't W key during the whole fight and expect to always win. Gotta slow the pace sometimes mid fight.
@TobyWanShinobi My problem is once I get someone down to white health I'm like I gotta get that kill and I throw all strategy out the window full W key lol.
@HAVOCSRT4 lol this is the way. Oh, 3 players left - I have the best position in circle. Nah, this man needs to die to my hand right now.
.. 30 seconds later. OMG I threw the game, how did that happen....
Losing higher ground against Anakin bro? Poor decision…
