      If money was no issue, I think I'll just copy yours, maybe change the colour. I'm a newbie and know very little about the MTB scene. Currently on a hardtail 29er, 800mm renthal bars, shimano clipless. Would be a dream to own a full suspension, but Im never going to be able to afford it. Its a shame but my hardtail still puts a smile on my face, even if I can't do a whole lot. It gets me out there and your gmbn videos keeps my new found passion growing. 🤘🏼

  • @ljekatt
    @ljekatt 4 роки тому +445

    I like the videos step away from the “bigger” and “faster” approach most mtb channels are all about, making it seem that the only way is huge forks and flying downhill, and instead look into the core of mtb and what is, For many of us, a more realistic daily use of our bikes. Love it.

    • @alexanderson7101
      @alexanderson7101 4 роки тому +11

      Realistic? It's a yeti. That frame alone cost more than most peoples entire bikes. I just got a Commencal Meta, and I could have gotten three for the cost of this bike.

    • @ewan_mclean
      @ewan_mclean 4 роки тому +28

      Alex Anderson I think he’s more talking about the type of riding. I’m guessing most people don’t send downhills and race enduros, yet ride XC and trail. That’s why he’s excited about seeing an XC bike on a big channel

    • @ljekatt
      @ljekatt 4 роки тому +26

      Alex Anderson i said ”realistic daily use”, not realistic price point. Everyone has their own budget but almost all channels are focusing on the more extreme part of mtb that, at least I am, far from able or willing to pursue.

    • @alexanderson7101
      @alexanderson7101 4 роки тому

      @@ljekatt And again, realistic? For what that fork cost you could get a Trek Marlin and upgrade it to 1x12. Nobody needs all the bells and whistles, and most people out there are looking at spending around a thousand dollars. If you're not willing to push a bike to the limits, then don't spend above the means.

    • @ljekatt

    One of the best videos I've seen from you guys, we have exactly the same mindset of what a bike should be and also riding it, simple, just grab it, shimano, no charging batteries, enjoying the nature around you, riding solo, silent, birds and then find that really fun short decent that you can walk up 10 times and have a blast, then ride home and drink a cold beer. Yep that's mountain biking for me.

    Not long after seeing this video from Doddy I was inspired to build my own dream bike. After many years of still riding 26” I had a custom built Transition Spur with all my favourite components. Not to light but a perfect blend of weight and durability. For me like Doddy I love the connection of a shorter travel bike but still being super smooth and fast but does not make it to easy on more challenging terrain. In the end I was super pleased with my build,. The best do it all bike II have ever owned and just a real pleasure to ride and be out in the countryside on….. thanks Doddy

    I can relate to how you're feeling. A few years after I moved into my house the forest service built 30 miles of singletrack with the trailhead directly behind me. Mostly XC, but there's a lookout point with a nice, very rowdy, 1 mile decent to break it up a bit. I've been riding it out of convenience for 11 years, but really learned to appreciate every aspect of my backyard trails during lockdown. Even now that it's a little easier to drive out to other trails and ride with friends, which is great, I still find myself hitting the 'ol backyard loop 3 times a week, or so. 👍

    Love the video. I ride my "cheap and nasty" MTB daily for fitness, riding laps for a few hours along a creek walking track. The ride is simple, but therapeutic. The best part is hitting the pedals at 04:30, and its just you and a tunnel of light from your head-stem and helmet lights. By 05:30 nature starts to wake up and the morning silence transforms into the chatter of waking birds. By 06:00 you are getting pretty tired, but the glow of the sunrise inspires you to complete that last lap of the creek and head home. That's what mountain biking means to me. It's not all about what you are riding, its about the journey.

    If I could build a bike without money limiting me, I think it would be a titanium full suspension bike with a pinion drivetrain.
    Probably a custom frame since Ti full sus are super rare.
    Springy bits would be 130-150mm from DVO of Öhlins. Definitely a coil shock.
    Drivetrain from Shimano makes sense to me, and should be XT.
    Brakes from Trickstuff or Hope.
    Wheels carbon, with silent hubs by onyx.

    Doddy, long time viewer first-time commenter. Having started mountain biking around about the same time as you, I really enjoy your passion for vintage and appreciate your technical insights. I really enjoyed this video, not just the awesome bike build but also a little bit of insight into why you choose a short travel bike and your appreciation for a bike that's capable and precise, fun up and down. There is something magical about these new short-travel bikes, having had about 15 year break, the capability of a modern fun cross country bike is so impressive and getting out for multi hour rides up and down is so great for stress relief. Great video, keep up the great work and enjoy that SB100, it's one heck of a bike.

    Doddy, you nailed it. I rode the hills around Bath in 1988 (on MB-2) with a pair of Rasta's named Zeke and Zebe. Fantastic brothers and a fantastic day (and night I might add). Of all your videos this is a fav. Thanks!

    The look on Doddys face says it all. Building something up from scratch is one of the best feelings in the world. Then sitting back and seeing something that beautiful, that was nothing but a bucket of parts... AAAHHHH!!! Its amazing! its like the super satisfactory feeling we used to have as kids, when we finished the day long lego build.

    Great to see a commentary with a more personal touch. Really enjoy hear about your personal reflection on lockdown time and all the good you’ve found during it. Most of all, thanks for sharing your bike build with us and topping it off with valid reasons why you’ve chosen the components for this build. Looking forward to see more builds. Keep up the good work and happy trails, you’ve inspired me to get onto my bike build.

    Just ordered my new modern mtb, this video just confirmed that a XC bike would be best for the type of riding I would be doing, being a newbie you easily get distracted by the cool features of trail bikes and get confused as to what to get. Great video.

You have such a creative and intuitive approach to the sport and being able to help us "see the forest through the trees". Your knowledge of technical and gear, combined with your down-to-earth personality makes watching these videos such a joy. You are a Mountain Biker Poet.
