  • I have been fortunate enough to utilise loads of Surfskates, in this comparison vid I chat about why my Carver has been holding me back.

    So just bought a carver and yow within 2 months of each other. As a beginner the Carver CX is the best for a beginner. It’s so much more stable and I would say fun to generate speed and safely carve. The yow take so much motion to generate any speed and even if you put all your energy into pumping you can not go as fast as you can on a carver. The carver makes you feel like you are safely rooted to the board. Yow makes me feel like I’m going to fly off of it at any moment. Feels really dodgy to ride.

      I am also considering Carver CX, Swelltech or YOW to train for surf but also would like to have some speed / commuting factor. How do you see it now after another months?

      @@LaggerSVK so I would stand by CX bring the best surf cruiser and YoW being a surf trainer and smoothstar/swell tech as surf trainers. But they only train the 1 min piece of when you are on the wave. There is soooo much more to surfing talk at these boards just can not train for. My advise. Get 2 boards just start on the Carver.

      Hey Carlo, thanks for the kind words..!!
      The carver is a 30” deck and the YOW is a 34”5, having had more time to think about it I think in terms of overall difficulty in a bowl that long deck would have been on the harder end of the YOW range so the fact it made me feel so confident tells me that the system just works better, for me at least

    The limiting factor is not the surf-skate you pick but how and what you train with it

    • @thesurfskateacademy1068
      @thesurfskateacademy1068 Рік тому +1

      The surfskate you have is very important.
      Some surfskate brands will definitely make your training very limited because of the lack of performance.
      Also, is not the same to jump on a 34.5” deck and 20” WB or a 30” deck and a 17” WB of the same brand.
      Your stance will be a lot shorter on the 30” deck plus the short WB that will affect massively on your body weight distribution, lower centre of gravity and lots of things.
      Same like on a surfboard… I can’t have the same feeling on a 6”0 performance shape or a 6”0 fish 🤙🏻🤙🏻

    • @scottishsurfer9885
      @scottishsurfer9885  Рік тому

      It’s defo a massive factor as pointed out by The SurfSkate Academy. Well put 🤙🤙

    Basically its about the wheel base.If your a novice then a longer wheelbase will be more stable/easier to ride… shorter wheelbase means more turn/less stable.. it’s about the wheelbase not the brand.

    • @thesurfskateacademy1068
      @thesurfskateacademy1068 Рік тому +2

      Hi pal, different brands have different surfskate trucks which make a big difference in performance. Is not just about the wheel base. Quick example: I’ve been training lots and lots of people for quite some time and depending on the surfskate they have is how I have to adjust the training session. A Carver CX will never perform like a YOW Meraki or a Smoothstar. A 20” WB on a Carver CX is a completely different board than a Yow Pukas Dark 20”WB for example.
      The Pukas Dark is one of my favourites boards because is a 34.5” deck which helps me to have a wider stance and that 20”WB on a Meraki allows me to turn very tight is I want to but with a longer WB I have a lot more rail to work with and that means more power, more drive and hold and so on.
      That’s why most of decks on Carver are short with a short WB, because the surfskate track doesn’t have have the performance like brands like Smoothstar and YOW and they have to go short to be able to have that surfing performance

      @@thesurfskateacademy1068 I couldn't have word'd this better myself, So many important factors at play here all of course subject to what you want from a Surfskate, if its just to cruise round on then any brand will achieve that, if you want to specifically surf train, then outside of personal preference and feel of a board the system & therefor bend is hugely important. The whole point of this vid is exactly that, I love my carver as a cruiser but I cannot surf train on it & not just down to the length.......

    So what is the overall best surf skate to buy and what size?

  • @LeGermFreeSugar

    Just some tips, Bend your knees and try to be lower. You r just to tall in the bowls, carver board too small/short for your height. hope that helps.

      Good video. Yes I agree, that yow gives you "something more" when climbing up the ramp, but I agree with S B M here, your Carver is too short for you. I moved from a 16 wheelbase to 17 wb and from a 31'' to 35'' and my skating immediately improved. Ciaoo!

    For what it’s worth, the wheels are a big difference between Carver and Yow. My girlfriend and I have three Carvers (C7 truck) and the same Yow you’re using in the video. We love the Carvers, but the wheels (maybe bearings?) are noticeably slower. This is actually really helpful when you’re starting out. But, the Yow is much faster with its stock wheels.

    • @scottishsurfer9885

      Thanks Brendon, very different truck systems on both brands which is of course a good thing given individual preference is a huge factor which is to say people will just like what they like, I love my carver but realised when using it specifically to train the technical aspects of surfing which of course is it’s primary purpose (although good fun to bomb around on too), the carvers short nature makes it easy to complete turns where I wouldn’t have on a wave, the short nature allows me to whip the board round therefore giving me a false sense of completion where as on the Maraki system on the YOW isn’t so forgiving and makes me work the correct “surf” technique to compete the turn through the technical aspect. A we say in my job, train hard fight easy……
      All that said, the carver is loads of fun and I hope you just enjoy doing what you and your gf use them for, just wanted to share my experience with them all

      Thanks Chuck, it’s the C7 I have on my carver. Don’t get me wrong though, I think that carver is a fantastic surfskate, it’s just too forgiving as a surf trainer, that short deck nature makes it easy to complete turns which you could have got hung up in on a wave which I think adds a false sense of achievement.
      The Yow forces the correct postural technique to complete the turn etc hovering you feedback while doing it….
