  • Tactics for how to catch walleye on Tobin Lake, Saskatchewan. Tobin Lake is a large renowned reservoir with a reputation for producing giant walleye. In the fall, many walleye migrate out of the lake into the Saskatchewan River near Nipawin to follow the shiner migration. This fall pattern creates a prime opportunity to catch nice walleye.
    We focused on big bends in the river where there was a reduced flow on the inside bend in depths that ranged between 17-22 feet of water. Ultimately we tried a few things that didn’t work for us but what worked the best for us was simply spot locking with the trolling motor and hanging jigs and shiners over the side of the boat. We basically sat in one location and ran traffic as waves of fish swim by. We have seen this tactic also work well on the Winnipeg River and Rainy River.
    Northland Thumper Jigs work great in the fall on big rivers. The little blade gives the jig some flash. Tipped with either a frozen shiner or jarred shiner. Bites were extremely light and the fish would pull the shiners off the jig so we did better using straight Nanofil and setting the hook immediately.
    Phenomenal fishing opportunity and we can’t wait to return to Tobin. We stayed with Trails End Outfitters.

    Just stumbled across this. I've fished that area many times. I haven't been up there for a number of years but I caught my best walleye up there. She was 31 3/8 of an inch long!

    Dressing like the locals dress for a mid February ice fishing trip, haha! Hope you guys had fun, the North Sask river is often under pressured in our neck of the woods, so it's often treated as a hidden gem in open view of the public. I jet boat it often and don't see a lot of angling activity, even though we've caught some great fish out of the river, especially around Nipawin.
    Most of the locals are hunting at this time of year, which is great for the die hard anglers. Because local outdoorsmen are focused on other things and your typical summer cabin enjoyer has already packed up the dock and the boat for the year, you often get the hottest bites of the year all to yourself. I love the fall, just wish it lasted longer up here! haha.

    The reason you did not see as many boats out fishing as you thought you would is because Tobin lake does not fish like it used to even 5 years ago. It has gotten so much fishing pressure and so many mishandled and killed fish during ice season it’s sad to see. Hopefully the make it a catch and release lake soon or make the slot sizes bigger or something to help protect our awesome fishery.

    Is live bait restricted up there, hard to come by or you just prefer preserved bait?

      We used frozen shiners or shiners in a jar.

      Live bait fish is not allowed in Saskatchewan. The only things you can use that are live are worms and leeches. No frogs, salamanders, or crayfish can be used. Worms and leeches must sourced be from within the province of Saskatchewan. Minnows must be frozen or commercially preserved. (In other words, just buy bait when you get here. they won't sell you anything you can't use)

      I haven’t spent time on those fisheries so can only guess but many reservoirs can be very cyclic with high and low water. Typically during a high water trend, you see better growth rates but it must be related to forage. Either too many predators, not enough bait or just not enough time where you have a huge new year class of fish that just had to grow up. The bigger fish might also be doing something different. I would hang out at a tournament weigh in to see if other people are finding big fish… that will tell the story because usually somebody finds them if they exist.

    Seen a video promoting Smallmouth fishing thru the ice. Feel like i remember hearing you saying you have tried to not really shed light on to that because of its potential harm it could do to a fishery. Hopefully people take the knowledge and dont exploit something, history tells us otherwise

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      I am ok with people targeting smallmouth through the ice if they catch and release and are not seeing fish with barotrauma but what I have always worried about is that most of the fish in a lake will often seem to winter in a few key locations where the fish can be really concentrated and if the wrong person gets on that program… they could do a lot of damage so that is why we personally have stayed away from it.

      @@JasonMitchellOutdoors it might have been a Live you did last year when you mentioned it, but i always take your opinion in high regard and wanted to learn more. The video mentioned how they basically just load up in an area and dont go anywhere for months. As you mentioned, thats potential trouble and needs to be treated with respect! Always appreciate your input, best of luck to you in your ventures!
