- A review of Hendrickson's Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible (ISBN: 9781565639775). This Bible is a very large dark blue hardback. It features thick paper with almost no ghosting. Each page displays four text columns. Two of the columns are wide, and they provide the original language text with an interlinear English translation. Two of the columns are narrow. They supply a separate translation in English. Strong's number for Hebrew and Greek words are also squeezed into the interlinear columns.

Great review, I have this as a 4 volume set (they are also glued ) and it would get used the most out of my reference books, I looked at this one how ever a little worry about the size of the print being only a 5. always look forward to your reviews thanks.
Thanks for the comment, gypsy. Yes, that print is a bit small. I bought this one used for $10, so it's definitely worth the price, even with the glued binding and the tiny print. I have my trifocals and magnifying glass!

PS. This Bible has to be purchased together with Strong's Concordance but I think it is worth to have this particular Bible at home or in the ministry as a baseline hardcopy resource of the Word of God in all major languages in which God's Word is expressed in this world. It is not a Bible for daily reading but it is one for the time when none computer or smartphone will work anymore and all Hebrew and Greek original scrolls will be banned or burnt. Its worth buying it even though the quality of print is not as great but to have all three resources of the Word of God in one book is important for the hard time. Besides one can also learn Hebrew or Greek from this book as others taught themselves to read from a regular Bible...
Shin Havah - Thanks for the encouraging comment. This Bible certainly is useful in the way you describe. Even with computers available, I often prefer to interact with tangible paper books. (I don't own a smart phone, by the way. I may be one of the last holdouts.)
@@RGrantJones Not at all. The command is to be separated and although it is very hard to unplug yourself completely from this world, I do not own TV and have a smartphone only on pay-as-you-go basis. I use though internet on a heavy basis for study and research mainly as well as some very basic and simple ministry placing the Word of God here and there where I feel it is important and necessary. I am not happy about spending long hours in front of computer and would gladly disconnect totally but in such case it would be good to have a group, an assembly or congregation of dedicated people living and working together as they did in Peter's camp in Jerusalem. As you can imagine in today's world dominated by consumption and flickering lights of attraction all over the human condition this is very hard to implement because people grown-up on capitalistic pulp still think they are heading for having it all on their own. Besides all forests are sold and fenced, all fields are private, all roads are inspected, all jobs are taxed and regulated - where would you go to be truly separated except Athos perhaps ... ???
While I own and greatly enjoy this bible, I’d also sharply disagree with the notion that biblical Hebrew can be learned to any level of satisfactory degree from it.
To understand Hebrew in particular (contrasting with modern English) requires hefty commentary which even Strong’s Concordance fails to provide.
Lets hope the Old world tongues are never brought to prohibition as you’ve suggested in our future. שלום

Thanks for the really quality review of this. I was on the fence and seeing the in-depth analysis of it helped me greatly. My only question is, does it contain the doubling for emphasis in the Greek translation of the New Testament? And if so, how is it presented? (I.e. Matthew 6:32 - “...your Heavenly Father knows that you need them *_all_* .” Is “All” presented as “All Emph.” Or “All All”?)

The Hebrew text is reproduced from the 1852 edition by Meir Halevi Letteris, which was widely published in any attractive Hebrew typeface by the British & Foreign Bible Society. The Greek text is reproduced from a recent reprint in more attractive Greek typeface of the 1881 edition of the Greek NT according to the text underlying the Authorised Version by F.H.A. Scrivener -- but without Scrivener's very interesting notes and appendices. The English column is not the KJV but another conservative version (I think the New KJV or the KJV2). Between lines each word is separetly translated and provided with its Strong's vocabullary number.

Alex - no, sorry. I have Lamsa's English translation of the Peshitta, but I don't read Syriac. Nor have I seen the Latin Vetus, but I do wish Jerome had taken Augustine's advice and kept to the Septuagint. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I do not understand why he mentions that he would have preferred that Jerónimo did not move away from the Septuagint? if Jerónimo had not preferred to translate the Latin Vulgate from the original Hebrew text he would not have made the great contributions to the reconstruction of the original biblical text of the old testament of his time, contributions that are still valid today! If Hieronymite had made the Latin Vulgate from the Septuagint, the Vulgate would not have been a true novelty. Precisely carrying out such an enterprise, which required him to learn Hebrew and Syriac, was what allowed him not only to create the Latin Vulgate, but also to correct various erroneous views of his time as a consequence of having Greek and Latin biblical versions that they had many translation errors (such as the corrections he made to the comments to the gospel according to Matthew by Hilary of Poitiers and the Song of Songs of Reticio of Autum). Personally, Saint Jerome is my Father of the Church and favorite writer! It is very interesting your point of view about San Jerónimo, I would like to know your reasons ...
@@alexdanieldominguezguerra7009 Here's a quotation from one of Augustine's letters to Jerome, in which he gives his reasons for wishing that Jerome use the LXX instead of the Hebrew as the Old Testament source text: "For my part, I would much rather that you [Jerome] would furnish us with a translation of the Greek version of the canonical Scriptures known as the work of the Seventy translators. For if your translation begins to be more generally read in many churches, it will be a grievous thing that, in the reading of Scripture, differences must arise between the Latin Churches and the Greek Churches, especially seeing that the discrepancy is easily condemned in a Latin version by the production of the original in Greek, which is a language very widely known; whereas, if any one has been disturbed by the occurrence of something to which he was not accustomed in the translation taken from the Hebrew, and alleges that the new translation is wrong, it will be found difficult, if not impossible, to get at the Hebrew documents by which the version to which exception is taken may be defended. And when they are obtained, who will submit, to have so many Latin and Greek authorities: pronounced to be in the wrong? For my part, I prefer the LXX to the Masoretic Text because the Septuagint is the Bible of the early, undivided Church (East and West). But I'm not opposed to using the Masoretic also, but as a secondary source. I wrote about this topic in my "Notes on the Septuagint" almost 20 years ago. @@RGrantJones Thank you for responding, San Agustín's argument is very interesting, I did not know, I promise that I will investigate that question more thoroughly to take a better founded position. However, I have a doubt about it; I have understood that the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls showed that there was a Hebrew text (more anterior to the Masoretic that we handle today) that had great similarity to the current Greek text of the Septuagint, the edition of the Hebrew Bible Stuttgartensia has been updated According to these findings, therefore, would not it be logical that the Masoretic Hebrew text we have today is even more reliable than the Greek text of the Septuagint, bearing in mind that they are Hebrew manuscripts dating from at least 100 years BC? I understand that the manuscripts of the Septuagint that we have today, the most complete, only date from the middle of the 4th century AD.
Another thing I wanted to ask you is, which language was the New Testament translated first? to Latin, to Syriac or Coptic?

@@alexdanieldominguezguerra7009 - I wish I knew the answer to your question about which language the New Testament was translated into first. I suspect your question may not have a single answer, because it's possible that different books were translated into different languages at different times. I believe that in the early Christian centuries tomes containing all the canonical books of the New Testament were rare. The books were usually circulated separately or in groups (the gospels, the Pauline epistles, the Catholic epistles, ...). Since they were circulated in smaller packages, they were likely translated piecemeal as well.
The Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) do give us samples of readings from the Hebrew Bible that were in use prior to the Christian era; of that I have no doubt. But do they represent the full range of readings that were extant when the New Testament was being written? I suspect they are just a sampling, and perhaps a narrow one. The New Testament witnesses to Old Testament readings that disagree with the Masoretic Hebrew, and those readings generally agree with the LXX. My principle reason for giving priority to the LXX is the New Testament witness, and that reason is bolstered by the fact that some LXX readings that disagree with the Masoretic Hebrew are supported by the DSS. My second reason for giving priority to the LXX is the witness of early Christian writers.

No, sorry. I think a reverse interlinear could good give you a feel for the way Greek sentences are structured, and how that structure differs from English.
Would you be interested in a CSB Bible? I'd be curious to see you compare it to the Greek and see how it holds up. I have no need for the bible as I have left the SBC and am at a PCA church which uses the ESV, (the only bible I used anyway). If you're interested, I'll pay shipping and all that. Ethan - Sorry for the delay. I just now saw your comment. I appreciate the offer, but I looked at the CSB at Bible Gateway. It's not a translation that interests me. I did score the CSB for "literalness," and it shows up on my translation continuum. It's a bit more literal than the NRSV, but quite a bit less literal than the ESV and RSV. I pray God blesses the PCA, and I hope the change works out well for you. God bless!

What translation version is the English in this bible?
I believe the interlinear was made for this edition. The side column translation is from 'A Literal Translation of the Bible' by Jay P. Green, 1985.

Isn't that the whole point of the interlinear?...in that it gives the literal translation of the Hebrew & Greek word translation? Yet...by giving a Strong's # above the words...that's like making us go to ANOTHER dictionary (Strong's) and look up the very same word! (That's like having a dictionary make you go to ANOTHER dictionary, right? Please, help me understand. Thanks for the question, Sylvia! I think the Strong's numbers are intended to be helpful. The English word gives you the meaning that the translator thinks is correct in the context. But words have a range of meanings, and Strong's helps describe that range. For instance, the translator may think the Greek word διώκω should be translated 'persecute' in a particular context, but if you look at the word in Strong's, you'll see that it can also mean to pursue, to ensue, to follow after, and to press toward.

That is a paperback version of the original hardback Bible put out by the Zoe Brotherhood. The hardback is still available direct from Greece from a few places despite being OOP (I believe Zoe Brotherhood is also no longer operational). One thing about this paperback version I did notice is the change of font used in the reprint - the original seems to have used the same font that TBS uses in their Textus Receptus NT.
I was going to purchase the hardback version earlier this year, but decided to just purchase a newly published little paperback GNT I found by accident (a good way to test ordering from Greece, which I’d never done - shipping not too bad but the wait was almost a month compared to the usual 12-14 days from somewhere like the UK or even Australia!) and to just perhaps order it later or get the LXX and NT as separate volumes direct from Apostoliki Diakonia (or a retailer).

I have no problem with the Hebrew or Greek but the English is full of typos; misplaced, doubled, and missing lines; misplaced paragraphs; wrong and missing Strong's numbers; wrong words (ex.: Moses' ark was build of "cyprus" wood.) In the very first chapter, "and God saw that it was good, and God said, let" is left out of verse 10-11; and more.
Many of the typos are understandable: Aberaham, Abreaham, Abraham instead of Abram; fruitdful; Sosom (Sodom); cricled (circled); "when she lay down nor when we (she) rose up"; and more. And these are from just the first few chapters of Genesis.
I communicated with the publisher a few years ago, inquiring if there was to be a revised printing and was notified that Mr. Green would not allow such; he wanted to retain complete control. So all in all, mainly because of Strong's numbers, if you're looking for a definitive reference Bible, pray for another interlinear to be brought onto the market. I looked and could not find one.

The “names” given in Hebraic OT sections vary across the numerous traditional titles (including the tetragrammaton יהוה).
However, it should be expected that the Latin derived Greek NT would maintain the Romanticized form of Yeshua’s name. Nonetheless, much of nothing is made over the names as this emphasis of “names” idiomatically emphasizes one’s character... not their phonetic name. Those who fret over the literal name fail to understand the meaning that names (character)

Because, it always seemed abundantly apparent to me that after the Jews straight up killed their own Messiah, Lord Jesus wanted to be known by the Gentiles... And part of being known by the gentiles is that that "stumbling block" for the Jews, that being the very name their Messiah. And one glorious day, when we all speak one language again, this mess will all get sorted out. But until then, when He pops in my life, the last thing on my mind is, "What is it you wish me to call you?" Usually I'm caught off guard thinking something terrible... This Bible is the hardest Bible I've ever read. Whatexactly is its purpose. Font ate way too small.
Okay...So at 10:44 Genesis 1... Doesnt appear to say "Became void". Which in doing so...does not allow for the wisdom of Knowing...The First Earth Eons ...became destroyed by our father...per the rebellion of Lucifer. Lucifer...who is coming pretending to be Christ... Doesn't want this information coming forth.
So if a person has this book might want to get the right copy which reads "became void". Or makes notes in the copy you have and strike through the (failure to bring forth the Living Word of God) Mistakes. We all do the best we can. I know that...Im certainly not perfect. Nobody is.

*The word Vain in the Hebrew means "void"
So God did not create the Earth void. He created it to be inhabited.

@@RGrantJones ... Is Not My Concern. Is Our Father's WORD. And his Concern. There is a warning in the last few words of the Word...that NOTHING should be Changed...it is a warning with Promise. Is A good message... That the Word of God Should Never be Changed to anything else...or Rightly Dividing the word would be impossible. Everybody who Loves our Father has to come out of Babylon/Confusion...so all the words have to fit together like Lego's... In order to see the whole structure of his letter to us. He Loves us...and we have to come out of confusion/Babylon. It is very important.

Natsir Im a moot point. Any variant outside of the Hebrew is a mere derivative attempt to convey an exponentially deeper language (hebrew).
As pointed out here with void, nearly all Hebrew words hold multiple interconnected meanings within them. Most relying upon one another to thatch complex understanding to the reader.
Reading the Bible outside of Hebrew is like trying to fill your belly with pictures of food.

Natsir Im perhaps if what you were insinuating was as large of a variant as you say. היתה (hayitah) means: come to pass, become, fall out, be. And תוהו (tohu) means: void, formless, empty, confusion, difficult to grasp...
Contextually it seems lackluster in this version to translate how they did (though all translations fall short) however, there is no direct sense of there being a semantic alteration.
Where you derive some theoretical previous Earth which “Satan” was from is more editorial than this book. Especially since this story is from the Torah, and Shatan wasn’t considered an evil force until relatively recently. The term Shatan simply means adversary and is used to describe people, as well as an angel of inditement upon which God tasks to challenge humanity (see the book of Job)
I’d sincerely like to know your source for such a claim, as it seems injected through the raw Hebrew.
Is this A first Edition...from 1976? Published in 2005. Changes have been made from the Original Greens Interlinear...and if the Changes were so important as to go into someboy elses work... Shameful. They should have made their own book...called it the "Smith and Wesson" or who ever... Interlinear...not put a trusted source name on a rewritten book Babylon definition is "confusion". Come out of Confusion. Ha! I would not buy this 2005 version...as a matter of fact...I bought it...noticed the Changes in it and returned it to the store. Truth is important.
