    Thank you Grant for your Bible reviews! I have learned so much about all of the different versions of Scripture through out Church History. I personally moved from NLT to NIV to NASB to now exclusively LSB and MacArthur Study Bible. Keep them coming!

    Very good review ) it is a very neat Bible - but not one I think I would buy other than to have it as part of my collection. I can see how some would really like this Bible though. Im spending more time reading the RSV and Orthodox study Bible this year. Thanks as always for excellent reviews and taking the time to put this together :-)

    I'm intrigued with how you calculate such a precise paper weight value using the sheet thickness. Have you considered doing a short video on that?

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the question! Yes, I've considered it, but so few were interested in the video I did on how to calculate line height, I haven't been motivated to make a paper weight video. To be clear, although I show a value to a tenth of a gsm, the error bars on my estimate are likely several gsm. On the basis of measurements of sheet thickness for several Bibles with known paperweights, I came up with a factor that allows me to convert from sheet thickness to paper weight. The calculation assumes that the paper in the different Bibles has the same density, which may or may not be true. (I have reason to believe it's untrue in the case of modern Cambridge Bibles printed on what they call high opacity paper. For those Bibles, I developed a separate conversion factor.)

    • @anonpaul2855
      @anonpaul2855 Рік тому

      @@RGrantJones I see. I enjoyed your line height video. Maybe just because I'm a math guy. As for paper weight, I just feel there doesn't exist a resource out there explaining how it's measured in a bound book, and I'm curious because it doesn't seem to be as simple as just placing pages on a scale lol. By contrast, measuring sheet thickness is very straightforward.

    _Olá_ from Brazil! As a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, I'd like to share a bit about the Bible landscape in Catholic Latin America. Study Bibles have been a novelty here. Most Catholic translations in Brazil feature works like Padre António Pereira de Figueiredo's translation (_Classical_ Portuguese, based on the Vulgata Clementina and the Nova Vulgata), Padre Matos Soares's translation (also from the Vulgata Clementina and the Nova Vulgata), "Bíblia do Peregrino" ('Pilgrim's Bible', inspired by Luis Alonso Schökel's original Spanish work), "Bíblia Ave-Maria" ('Holy Mary Bible', based on the Maredsous Bible in French), the Jerusalem Bible (from the original French version), and "Bíblia Palavra Viva" (loosely 'Bible the Living Word', inspired by the Italian "La Bibbia Scrutate le Scritture"). While the "Bíblia Ave-Maria" does have a "Study Bible" version, the "Bíblia do Peregrino" and "Bíblia Palavra Viva" don't explicitly title themselves as "study bibles". However, they do feature rich comments and notes that provide depth to the reader. As you can see, many Catholic Bible translations in Brazil are influenced by texts from other Romance Languages like French, Spanish, and Italian.
    On the Protestant side, we have translations like João Ferreira de Almeida's work (and its subsequent updates, being the first translation to Portuguese). There are also translations based on the "Critical Text" such as the "Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje" (NTLH) ("New Translation in Modern Language", by the Bible Society of Brazil) and the "Nova Versão Internacional" (NVI), which is based on the New International Version (NIV) in English. Most Study Bibles in Brazilian Portuguese are translations from American English, primarily based on the NIV. There's also a notable presence of versions tailored for the youth, often referred to as "young bibles". These are largely translated from Zondervan bibles designed for kids and adolescents. Additionally, there's a blend of Student Bible notes from American English that have been integrated into Brazilian Portuguese biblical text versions. There are so many of these works that it's impossible to list them all here, but for those interested, the "Sociedade Bíblica do Brasil" (The Bible Society of Brazil) website is a comprehensive resource.
    Interestingly, we also have translations of the King James Bible in Brazilian Portuguese, uniquely titled "Bíblia King James". It's fascinating that they chose to keep both Portuguese and English words in the title. Technically, "King James" could be translated as "Rei Jaime" or "Rei Tiago", with both "Jaime" and "Tiago" being variations of "Jacobus". "Jaime" has a more Iberian touch, resonating with both Spanish and Portuguese, while "Tiago" leans more towards Galician-Portuguese origins.
    In the realm of Catholic youth-oriented Bibles, there's the "Bíblia Católica do Jovem" ("Catholic Youth Bible"). I've been trying to trace its origins, and it might be based on an Italian work titled "La Bibbia Giovane" or possibly one of two Spanish versions: the Latin American Spanish "La Biblia Católica para los Jovenes" or the European Spanish "La Biblia Joven". The intertwining of languages and translations is a fascinating journey, and I'd recommend it to anyone with a keen interest in linguistics.
    Despite English not being my first language, I deeply appreciate the thoroughness of your reviews, covering both technical aspects like printing and content, including language and theoretical approach. It would be wonderful if, in the future, you could also delve into Bibles and Study Bibles in other languages, especially considering the rich tapestry of translations we have in Brazil. _Muito obrigado_ for introducing me to this magnificent world of biblical studies. Wishing you immense success in all your endeavors. Keep up the fantastic work!

      Kevin - The publishers of the NIV or NLT don't send me copies of their editions for review. At some point, when/if I retire, I'll have more time to devote to the channel and be able to post more videos on a wider range of translations.

    I don't know if these types of encounter notes would be useful (to me, personally) as a prompt for internalizing a relationship with God. In all fairness, I haven't read any of the Blackaby's resources and I also haven't tried a meditative approach. I'm not against that approach. I just know that I'm a hard nut to crack. I don't even really care for "girly" devotional Bibles; believe me, I have tried.
    For myself, gaining a closer experience of God often comes by way of super-geeky analysis, scholarly studies that are almost "over my head, " and mind-blowing connections; really getting into the weeds and finding that it's all still coherent.
    On the tooic of Godly encounters....I just ordered Vern Poythress' Theophany? Any thoughts, anyone?

      The notes in the ESV and NKJV Study Bibles are more extensive. I haven't attempted to determine which study Bible's notes are most comprehensive.

    Hi Mr Grant Jones. I just picked a random video to get in touch with you. I enjoyed many of your reviews and projects, but know very little about you. I don’t know if you want to share anything, but I started to think about this around recommending your channel. Especially your works on translations
    comparison. You seem to have good insight. Denominations and things are not the most interesting, and I guess my question is, are you a scholar of some sort?
