    Spot on with this review sir! This is the best Very Rare in a few years. If you want to really experience Midleton products then you need to seek out the Barry Crockett Legacy and the Dair Ghaelach. I'm looking forward to seeing what you review during this marathon.

    Thanks Erik for this excellent and informative review. Viewed this bottle on the shelf more than once but just couldn't pull the trigger because of price and the unknown. Given the complexity of flavors you've pulled out of this whiskey and the apparent ease if sipping. Will eventually give it a go. Thanks again.

    Wow! For that price, I'd grab a Redbreast, Yellowspot, AND Teeling... then die happy. Great Review, Erik!

      I am tempted to! But it's not just the matter of money, it is trying to find a place to put it! My whiskey shelves are QUITE full!

    Great review, Erik. I just ordered a bottle of Yellow Spot which is my next in my series of Midleton having already done many others. Maybe this will be next. I'm excited about you doing the Irish series because I enjoy Irish even though I spend most of my time with Scotch.

    You said it right. We are living in an era of craft irish whiskey boom! Irish whiskey is my favorite category for a few reasons; the industry change within the irish whiskey community and the fact that incredible irish whiskey is hard to find! I hope to see some very obscure things in the next few months, as there are an extremely wide range of irish whiskey that never makes it to the 2 feet of allotted shelf space most american stores have. Slainte!

    I absolutely like your adventure in to Irish whisky and respect your will to learn the culture and principles behind The bottle especially cause your a big connoisseur of scotch whiskey which is in my opinion absolutely different but absolutely wonderful in its own way. I haven’t seen any of your other videos in the series anyways but look forward in those and your views on the golden liquid they call Irish whisky. Cheers🤙🏽

    Thanks Erik. Just bought a second bottle at Costco in March 2021. I think I paid about $230 but it’s up to 56.5%. Like you, I’m wondering what to do with the fancy box and bottle, but someone over there seems to be listening.

  • @gman5986
    @gman5986 4 роки тому +4

    "What will I do with this box?...Maybe when I die I;ll be cremated and have the bottle of ashes put in this box!"..................I'm still laughing my ass off writing this but I have to admit its an excellent idea! I have to toatally agree that a NAS at 40 proof for this kind of price is quite ludicrous!

      It is about the history though and there are reason for this proof to be 80 Not sure your knowledge on Irish whisky but it’s different from bourbons and scotchs in that history and tradition and where the flavors come from are different and unique. They say Irish whisky is like a delicate woman. Bourbons use high proof to spread and carry flavors because of how it was maid well pot stills are way different and flavors are really vast but radically smooth and I hate to use that word but that’s just pot still. Thanks for the comment though I totally understand t
      Your opinion cause I have said the same thing in the past but really devoted some time to learning the processes of the expressions and from that I only say these things

    • @gman5986
      @gman5986 3 роки тому

      @@arthurrodarte8624 I see your point but my personal preference is no lower than 86 proof but I have enjoyed some watered down to 80 proof experimenting with harsher young Scotches. I do love Redbreast Cask Strength and I do usually add water to bring to 92 proof. Enjoy the flavors in that one but always open to new experiences. Thanks for responding with a different vantage point

  • @arthurrodarte8624

    One more point is the way they make Irish whisky and why they make it 40 has to to do with the history of Irish whisky and the availability of it and the pure tradition. As you stated it’s an Irish Renaissance right now and iv tried many higher proof Irish whisky but to preserve tradition and all around flavor 80 proof is a great place any higher with this bottle and You could be well Let’s just say the The master distiller and crafts men maid it this way for a reason not just to save money like other genres of whiskey do.

    Great review! 80 proof is the lowest proof possible. I would expect 90-100 proof for $300+
    (Scotch is an exception)

    Eric, if you want refinement at a higher ABV, try Midleton Dair Ghaelech. Great stuff!

    Erik, I liked your review. I have a small Irish collection and looking to add a few top notch bottles. You stated that there were better value bottles out there (bang for the buck). Can you name a few? I have and like the entire Redbreast line especially 12 cask and the 21 year variants. Green spot is another good choice for me.
    I am glad to see this video since I was contemplating buying the Midleton very rare. I have the King Alexander III and wish it was a stronger ABV ( but I digress since it is a Scotch).
    I am open for any feedback.

    I have had 3 bottles of this over a few years.I bought the first and took my time with it. In the end I felt foolish for spending so much on it. The second and third I was gifted and I felt bad for them having gone to such expense . Would be a very good whiskey at half the price or less. But for €180 at 40% ABV blended then it needs to be a showstopper. It isn't even close. It is seriously underwhelming. This is Midletons triumph of marketing hype over integrity and is Irelands Johnnie Walker Blue. The best I could give it would be an 8. I could have got 2 Redbreast 12 cask strengths for the price.!Thats a 9+ out of 10 whiskey there. Thank you for going into such an extended dive into Irish whiskeys. Irish seems to be a rare afterthought with reviewers.

      I had a glass of it sitting for a couple hours and I liked it more after it had more time to open up. But, I am sure that two months from now I will look back and find that many of the other Irish Whiskies I will review will be better.

    Hi Erik. Of the relatively newish distilleries or brands (or even the fairly established ones) I'm wondering which you see as a dark horse (or maybe an obvious horse) to become much more sought after in say 20-30 years time. Obviously here in Ireland we have the Midleton Very Rare brand whereby anyone who were early followers now have a lovely and sought after collection. I'd appreciate if you took the time to respond, or considered discussing same in a future video?

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  3 роки тому

      I think Teeling will definitely become much more sought after as the whiskies age and I think they are leading the pack in authenticity.

      Now if they can only raise the ABV to at least 46% and stop chilfiltering.

    If whiskey has a gender then the Irish is female, so light and friendly, sweet and delicate. One whiskey I found similar to the Irish was Habiki Harmony. Male of course would be split between scotch and bourbon. Hope to see you review Waterford's single malt.

      Funny, after recording the video I left the whisky in the glass for a couple hours to see if it would open up more. Then as I spent more time with it I kept thinking "this reminds me of Japanese whisky."

    the grain in this is just too dominate and almost young in my opinion - more like a 85-86 in my opinion
