and no these games are not cannon to the classics at all, just because it has a same character and location name
4:48-5:08 Wow, a negative portrayal of people that may even constructively criticize negative reviews on underrated Insomniac games like Ratchet & Clank and the Legend of Spyro home console trilogy (and the handheld version of TEN) talk and yet as calm as the disagreements were, he’s the one being a “special snowflake” because eh probably doesn’t wanna hear a lot of good things about these games, talk about defensive!
@@kieranstark7213he has always been the harsh type of reviewer but even then, he did praise some things, like the Gaul boss fight at 7:09, it seems like to me that you're also defensive for complaining about the part where he responds to shallow defenders of the game.

It’s not even the same Hunter and Avalar.
This is a reboot series. This isn't at all apart of the original trilogy.

The Gaul thing feels ripped from the Jak and Daxter series. The main villain in the Jak 1 is named Gol and is the sage of dark eco. Similar to this, the final boss in this game is named Gaul with the same type of pronunciation and and you fight him in an area that basically looks like theres dark eco everywhere. And funny enough thats where Dark Spyro appears. Dark Jak is formed by dark eco being pumped into him.
Unless Gaul/Gol are actually based on something from a book or some type of mythology, the boss basically copied a bit of Jak and Daxter.
MegaDrain gol is way better of a big bad and a boss in general.

Zomagedon agreed. It's different so it's bad. I will say though this game is probably the worst in the series. He really didn't talk about the difficulty of this game being dramatically harder then the rest of the series. Actually he seems to absolutely love the difficult which is nice for a change.
The execution isn't great. Gameplay killed it and it had prety generic stuff in it. The series of lost potential if you ask me.
nenissaK that's one thing I can agree on. I think the gameplay was fine but i feel the developers were rushed to finish the series. The last one was the best in terms of scale and basically showing what they could do with the series giving proper time and funding. From the official designers of the series they wanted to do A lot more but just didn't have the time to do it. Honestly there was so much they could do after the last game in terms of world building and story telling with continuing its version of the world but we got skylanders instead. Generally I give the game series a 7/10. It was fun and enjoyable but could have been better. Personally though I liked a lot of the themes of this series and it's departure from the original series light tones. But that's coming from someone who enjoys narrative over gameplay. I'll take both if I can get it but if I had to chose it's the story's that make me remember a game not the gameplay, that and coupled with the potential for what they could be or become.
I wonder if they could make a continuation to it... if someone handed them a GDD that was actually good.
This series was a train wreck from the get go. Even, if that gameplay is just "ok" at best. The story sounds cool on paper. But, the execution always felt off and its seems like no love was put into it. What puts me off the most is that nearly all the characters are forgettable and generic. Also, tries too hard to make this was epic adventure trilogy just to fall flat on its face.
Pretty much spot on there and from what I've played so far, the handheld games take that amazing formula of game design and try to stuff it onto a portable device... could have killed myself earlier for playing that shit.
The developers of Dawn Of The Dragon also did a video game based on Dreamworks’ How To Train Your Dragon!
I had fun playing Dawn of The Dragon with my Brother. Good times. I didn't find it difficult at all really. And I loved the battle in Warfang. It felt like a war. I felt more invested in this game than any other Spyro game really. I don't agree that it's a God of War clone. Never did. I honestly have no idea where that came from.

Personally, I think this trilogy should have been a movie or something. I love the stories of these games, but the actual game part ruined it for me.

Funny you say that, Activision had started to produce a film called The Legend of Spyro. Seriously. There are traces of its existence around the internet if you look around enough. I've only ever found script pieces and some sound tracks before but the idea was completely scrapped once Skylanders (not) spyros adventure was decided to be the next project with his name slapped on it. It was probably also scrapped due to poor sales of this trilogy over all since rumours at the time slated it for a Christmas 2008 release(same time as DoTD) but that moved back a year and then we stopped hearing news about it.

If you're wondering what story these games are ripping off, it's Star Wars. These games are basically Star Wars with dragons, with only a few plot points shuffled around. Spyro is Luke, Ignitus is Obi-Wan, Cynder is Darth Vader, Malefor is the Emporer, the Chronicler is Yoda, etc. First installment ends with the hero winning a huge victory but the evil organization is still out there, second installment ends on a darker cliffhanger, third installment has a final confrontation with the Big Bad where Vader/Cynder shows their true loyalty. It's a pretty generic Hero's Journey plot, really.
Actually Malefor is a tragic hero, an alternative character with tragic past. A Anakin figure type character, because I dont if it is true (cause they are rumors) but before the cancelled movie, a second trilogy was expected, and rumors are saying that was a sequel trilogy after the event of DOTD, or a prequel trilogy with Malefor when he was young, and be the main protagonist. Jared Pullen (lead concept artist of the two first games) was saying Malefor is used to be the father of Spyro and Ignitus be the father figure of Spyro, but it is a base idea, never used in the games, but still can be canon.
His form in DOTD show he isnt, how he used to be, dark powers deformed him, distorted his voice... In ANB and TEN, the statues of him show a totally different dragon, he looks majestic, graceful, royal... and Jared Pullen said he is a hero of a lost era, but despite the time and wars, its lordly majesty is still as always representing a symbol of hope and admiration. But with the influence of Activision in DOTD, most of the characters lost their personnality, and Malefor who was a mysterious character in ANB/TEN, and how you can see he is really powerful, and redoubtable with his mystic aura, who such a cliché antagonist in DOTD because Activision love Hollywood stereotypical story, and achetypical characters, like we can see in COD. But Activision cancel the movie, and the second trilogy because they want directed Spyro with a new style who is Skylanders
I'm saying that Malefor and Palpatine fill the same basic role in the story, not that they're literally the exact same characters (and I mean in the actual games that we have, not hypothetical cancelled games that are never gonna see the light of day thanks to Skylanders). Their backstories are both essentially just "ultra strong dude turns on his mentor(s), builds an army, and overthrows society, exterminating almost all of the dragons/jedi whilst corrupting a promising young dragon/jedi to become his second-in-command."
Considering Star Wars is the most basic and obvious use of the 3 act structure in media, I wouldn't say it ripped off Star Wars at all, rather they both use an age old story telling template

It is based a little bit on Star Wars, tragic hero announced by a prophecy corrupted by something more poweful than him is principal descendant take the role of the chosen one after he was deprived of his legendary dragon status and turn dark. The most drammatical character who is act like a father figure and mentor, The Guardians with similar roles to the Jedi.

I know dont get me wrong, I based not my theories on the rumors but the base idea.
Dawn of the Dragon is the only one out of the trilogy I actually liked, and that's only because of free-flight (though yes, it is heavy), Cynder's unique abilities, and the fact I used cheat codes for full upgrades and infinite mana.
I loved the electric tornado attack in Eternal Night (which was a fuckload better suited to combat than the standard electric breath, which was a fucking joke in that game), but I scarcely dared to use it because it chewed through my magic meter in a matter of seconds even with those Dragon Relic upgrade thingies.
Dark Spyro was an alright reward, though.

If there's an alternate universe version of Spyro, then there has to be an alternate universe version of Hunter in the Legend of Spyro series. I don't see how Hunter's appearance approves this game as canon.

Yeah. Maybe they overdid it on the bloom. Also in the level where the dark army launches the siege on the Mole city, were you getting some strong Lord of the Rings vibes too? Especially when you realise that the main character is voiced by Elijah Wood!
If you look the police of the title in the cover of the games, he looks he was a little bit inspired by Lord of The Rings, and not only this, the dark atmosphere and the part in the ramparts of Warfang are inspired by this. No mention to the scenario little bit inspired by Star Wars, with a tragic hero, corrupted by something more poweful than him

Aaaand I also think that Skylanders is a damn good franchise, but doesnt earned the name "Spyro's adventures" at all.

I liked the story and music too, this series really could've worked if there was more effort put into it. To this day it has a strong fandom and stands out despite being an edgy rushed reboot of the Spyro franchise, but hey I guess there's a lot of people who like that sort of thing. The original Spyro series was bright and cheerful so a darker twist would've worked if it was just done better. Fun fact, a movie was planned for The Legend of Spyro franchise but it was cancelled.

Playing Dawn of the dragon single player isn't much better. The AI does stupid shit making platforming a pain and just does whatever.
You know, you keep talking about how the story in those games is so great and touching, but you barely get into details. And what little you actually say about it gives me the impression that it's just as generic and uninspired as the rest of the games. What's so good about this story, anyway?
Yeah I know. I just like it because as generic as the story is, I think it works well in the Spyro Universe and especially in Eternal Night, I actually like Gaul and how the events at the end of the game happen and lead into Dawn of the Dragon... it's still pretty rough in all honesty but I like it

Nice to see a recent comment on this gem of a video! I think so too. I've heard the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game was a lot better than the PS2 version, and I'd argue the Wii version is between PS3/Xbox 360 and the PS2 versions in quality. The PS2 version is known to be graphically inferior, but not necessarily for cutscene glitches, so I definitely think it was a scratched disc issue. The first version I played was the Wii version until the disc got so scratched that it would freeze in the Valley of Avalar, and now I own the PS3 version too. 😁

The Legend of Spyro is not in the same universe as the pre-Legend Spyro games, and Legend having its own Spyro, its own Sparx, and its own Hunter does nothing to change that.

I played Dawn of the Dragons for almost 5 hours last night while watching a Colorado Avalanche game and I had a little too much fun and when the mole people village was being burned i misheard the mole people whom said “Help us please!” I heard “Help we’ll freeze!!!” I was having such a ball the rest of the night I was laughing unbearably hard for an hour it felt and I am surprised I passed that part, if I didn’t figure out the puzzle to put out the fire I was 1 second close to failing that mission lol
I for one enjoy dawn of the dragon it's 1 of the first genes I completed 100% with my nephew Jak bless your heart for doing the reviews love your work malifore was hard me and my nephew spent 4 hrs trying to beat him but it was worth it to hear the gorgeous credit theme guide you home and I cried when ignitus died

I cant believe i used to like DotD, its so boring, and the graphics are so bright that my eyes hurt just looking at it
The characters are also too bright, i mean Spyro looks like he was made out of plastic
I also thought the story was cliche too, compared to other things i have played its bland and uninteresting, i honestly prefer Enter the Dragonfly because i at least get a laugh out of how terrible it is.
I enjoyed Spyro A New Beginning and to be honest I played that before the PS1/PS4 trilogy. and I have to say this one frustrated me a bit, I didnt even finish it due to how bullshit the final boss is.

I think it depends on how you care for your games. I still have some of my PS1 games from the mid-late 90s and they held up very well over the years. Bu yeah, emulating is a lot more convenient I can admit.

Just gotta be patient. He did admit that he didn't really play the games growing up so it's understandable why they aren't on top priority right now until he finishes the other games he wants to do. But just give it time, he'll get to them eventually.

I tried forcing myself to play through the first game. Got real fucking repetitive and I fell out somewhere a LONG way into the First Level (Ice place) then I booted up Eternal night. Pooped out at the FIRST FUCKING TUTORIAL!!! I love these games but it’s hard to play when it’s the same shit over and over again. The only thing this games got is a good story.

I think I've found the best way to explain the series, they didn't get any feedback so the devs said fuck it we will make up our own flaws for the sequel and then didn't want to make a third so the publishers went on fiverr to hire someone cheap and quickly

franchise but I'm able to take and laugh at jokes at it lol.
ANYWAY, on the video itself. I can' really comment much since I've never played the games. I will admit that when I first saw these two games in stores, I was thinking that maybe they would've improved the gameplay by not making it so monotonous but apparently, that didn't happen. It's really too bad because if they just put some more work into the gameplay instead of farting out a new title every year, they would've been better received. Because between Spyro and Crash's reboots, Spyro had the better chance at succeeding.
I mean, I can agree that while the story was cliched and full of questionable voice acting, the premise actually did sound pretty engaging. At least more than Crash of the Titans at the time. I actually thought the elemental dragon elders looked pretty neat. But I agree, the repetitious enemies were horrid and it only burns me out that in the sequel, the enemies didn't change all that much.
Anyway, another neat video. I wept abit when you mentioned how you were going to tackle the handheld games. Godspeed Jak. Godspeed lol.

Spyro the Dragon, the original trilogy anyway was farted out but at least with the first two, they did quite the improvement. Spyro 1 had no engaging story, Spyro 2 did. Spyro 1 had somewhat loose control, Spyro 2 had much tighter controls. My point is that when I meant fart out, I meant how it affected the quality of the game that came after or in the Legends case, lack thereof.

I don't know about A New Beginning being on the Wii. I bought the Gamecube port and I don't remember seeing a Wii port. But the other ones? Yes they were.

Strangely enough, the GBA version of The Eternal Night is the far superior version in my opinion. Arguably the best version of all the Legend of Spyro games.

The DS version is my favourite port of Spyro: Eternal Night.
Dawn of the Dragon looks like it was the one people least want to hate, I think the third game could’ve been genuinely good if the tether mechanic wasn’t so broken and the level design was better, because it looks like it has promise in the opening hour of the game, but the rest of the game doesn’t look good.
Loved Dawn of the Dragon, didn't really like The Eternal Night.
Spyro and Cynder becoming canon is also something I liked, although it's a bit ironic since in Spyro 3, Spyro hated the thought of a hero falling in love. (Yes, I know, different universes.)

Is it just a problem I'm facing due to UA-cam being UA-cam or is your camera fucked because during the review whenever you cut to yourself it does glitch out your lips occasionally don't sync with the text hand gestures look awkward like a really bad jumpcut etc

The GBA version of The Eternal Night is the best version of the game. It gets rid of basically all the bullshit that the other versions had. It plays pretty nicely, it has more enemies and unique bosses and you hardly see the Monkeys in the game.
What about the final "I love you" in Dawn of the Dragon? That bullshit is the cause of many bullshitty fanfictions XD
