- Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex is a game that some people love and others love to hate! Before now, I haven't really known how I feel about it. But now I do and it's going to be mental!

Wait, the music sucks? Those songs have fairly good structures, good use of instruments, harmonies, accompaniments, sound balancing, chord progression! They're not repetitive, and they have a fairly good flow to them, even if the song looping is non-existant, which leads to the bgm just going quiet before the song starts over again.
They even fit the overall tone of the levels, since it aims for cartoonish silliness instead of any sort of seriousness. Sure, some of the midi instruments sound a bit comical, in a non-intentional way, but overall the soundtrack is rather splendid.

A. Yeah, there are few songs that I don't care for either. But that doesn't stop me from appreciating the quality and the effort they put into the music.
B. Yeah, it really doesn't, but at the same time it still sounds fitting with its constantly flowing goofy melodies. The tone and style of the songs fit rather well for this game, while they wouldn't have worked in other Crash games. At the same time the music from other Crash games wouldn't have worked here either. It's kinda weird like that.

Sure.
I tend to see liking something and finding something as good, as two separate opinions. This is why I can most of the time still appreciate music, even if I wouldn't neccessarily like the song. This has probably something to do with the fact that I've studied Music Theory for quite some time now.
For example, I think Bach's songs are revolutionary and rather well made, while at the same time I despise them greatly. This is probably because I hate playing his songs on piano: I don't enjoy the melodies nor do I find them enjoyable to play.

Soph H Finally, Someone else who likes it as much as I do. The only really bad thing about the game for me are the swimming stages and those DAMN loading screens! Other than that, it's really not THAT bad. This is also coming from someone who has played atrocities like Sonic 06 as well.
So true I never liked the water levels. I'm actually not a big fan of water levels in any game (except for mario 64) lol. But for some reason the loading screen never bothered me as a kid lol I never played sonic 06 but I've heard a lot of negative things about it xD I have played other games that are considered "bad" like simpsons skateboarding and I loved that game haha
I liked it too I don't even consider graphics look awful, they only look a bit different character design, the rest is like an enhanced PS1 game. Of course one of my only complains are the loading times, but I'm used to it.

The only songs that dont fit are Tornado Alley and Avalanche really.
Still Avalanche is 80% a normal snow level before the chase in the end anyways, so it fits.
And Solar Bowler have one of the best Crash songs ever.

I bought the Xbox version of this game, and it surprisingly has much faster load times compared to the PS2 version, on top of having improved graphics. The gameplay isn't much different from what I can tell, though, but how ironic is it that a non-Sony platform is the definitive way to play a Crash game?

Darius Chatman Based on some gameplay videos I've seen, the Gamecube version has the graphics of the PS2 version, but the load times of the Xbox version.
The GameCube version isn't very good. The graphics look awful, the loading screen just says the words loading without any animation or background, and the framerate is not only capped at 30 fps for most of the game, but often times it will go down to 10 fps and lower. (At least on my Wii, don't know if it performs better on an actual GameCube.)
I have the ps2 version, and it takes about 5 seconds to load a level on Xbox compared to 20+ seconds on ps2
Yeah, the Xbox had a more powerful graphics card compared to the PS2.

The difference here is the Crash Warped was awesome and fun to play. This game just brings tears and pain. A couple of decent bosses and music tracks and even R. Lee can't fix this game.

It was actually really good, people just didn't like it because it was too similar to Warped, and when they tried to innovate, people complained, and wanted the original formula back, who understands fans, anyway?

The load times were only a few seconds at most on the gamecube version. by a few I mean 5 max.

Wow that’s exactly what happened to me with this game when I was a kid. “Wow I got this game and I’m stuck at the first boss” and never advanced 😂
I felt that this review was very bias, in many of the cases you don't even explain why it's bad. For example, the level design, sneaking power up, 2nd boss fight, and soundtrack. You just say it's boring or it sucks without rime or reason. You also forgot to mention that, most of the vehicle stages are half-half. Meaning that it's 50% platforming and 50% vehicle, I thought that was cool and different. Anyway, your explanation for the vehicle stages and loading screens were proper, I hated that submarine too, I could never get the relic because that thing is too slow. In the end, out of all your crash reviews, this one felt strongly bias.
Fair enough, this video is quite old before I really grasped what goes into making these videos so do keep that in mind. However, I can still explain in detail WHY things are boring or suck :P

2:51 - Me when I've been waiting 10 minutes for The Sims 2 to load on a shitty PC in 2011. Like, literally the loading times all took approximately 10 minutes to load. And I was eventually over it.

Cortex and N. Gin are absolutely terrifying, but the rest of the game actually isn't that bad. It does feel too much like Crash 3 for its own good though.

I think you shat on the graphics of this game a bit much, i think its pretty glorious graphics tbh, yeah the character models could be better, but the textures and lighting are pretty neato
And it was an early game for the PS2, so it's unfair to judge it by it's graphics.

Practically the whole game is like Crash 2 and 3 put together. It's basically a carbon copy of the former. But I like it anyway. They should have kept the powerups from the start.

Discovered this channel recently, a couple of Hawktober vids showed up in my recommended vids, and I started a channel binge. Can't get past this vid though, 'cause it's still fucking loading..
IMO, the music was good; it was just the context in which the music played that made them bad. eg. The avalanche music would be more fitting to another snow level like artic antics.
I have this game on my PS2 and I can't say its bad ... I'm looking at u vechale levels the graphics r amazing to me and gameplay isn't bad there were flaws but the warp room was awesome
Loading never took THAT long...I've sat through so much worse it's not funny...20 second load times are ok.
Nothing beats Skyrim's 1-3 minute load times...

Get the Xbox and Game Cube version. The load times are about 10 to 13 seconds.

The Wrath of Cortex may have it's flaws, but it was way better than It's About Time. Why was it better than It's About Time? Well, obviously, because The Wrath of Cortex wasn't as gimmicky as It's About Time! And by "Gimmicky", It's About Time has the crappy Quantum Masks, the power-ups from Warped (Except for the double jump power-up) did not make a return in It's About Time, Dingodile, Tawna and Cortex's gameplays suck, It's About Time is a copied, pasted and edited version of Warped with time travel and multi-verses, etc.. It's About Time sucks because it's not as good as The Wrath of Cortex. The Wrath of Cortex deserves a remake. Enough said. Fun facts: The Greatest Hits version of the PS2 version of The Wrath of Cortex had shorter load times.

The soundtrack is actually really fucking good in my opinion. There are a few examples of soundtracks not fitting the level, but in a lot of cases the soundtrack perfectly fits the level. I fucking love the soundtrack. It is very atmospheric and dark. Good shit. specifically the soundtracks of the water levels, H2 Oh no, arctic antics and crate balls of fire are really fucking good. In my opinion at least. No one gives a fuck about my opinion tho, so I don't know why I wrote this comment.

I fell that they did ok for this game considering that they only had 12 months to work on it... only 12 months, same with spyro 4 expect with spyro 4 I am not sure the exact amount of time.

I recently just replayed this game as I use to have Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3 and CTR as a kid as well as this. and this game is fucking horrible!! I hate it! I don't even think it deserves the name Crash Bandicoot. why not big face orange wombat?

This was the first game I ever played. Crash Bandicoot will always have a special place in my heart :)
The original release needed at least 30 second to load and even 1 minute if you are unlucky
Also in crash 3 a level needs actually 6 seconds to load but because you waited until crash appeared you thouth it was 9 seconds

The villains do look..... bad Tiny and N GIn and dingodile specifically but i had fun with this game. I as born mid 90s and loved the trilogy as a kid and when i got to play this on the gamecube i liked how even though it was a new home for crash it still played like crash.
also Why change up teh formula so much in between 3 and 4? it worked fine so they played it safe. a questionable move but they did it as they didn't know what to do with crash yet on new consoles.

Who knows after The N Sane Trilogy maybe they will remake this game. Not like N Sane Trilogy but change the levels up, bring back old scraped ones and tell a similar story. the story is ok Crunch is a cool character but i think after Crash's revival we need to see Crunch again in the future
what funny is that when you're playing this game on a emulator the loading time is much faster then this
The load times are quite better in the XBox version. They're definitely still too long, but not enough that you're bored with the game before you even get to play.
Unfortunately my XBox copy freezes any time I try to load Tsunami, so I can't beat it without the Wombat cheat. So I'm stuck with the PS2 version.
I like this game. Xbox and GCN version of the game have faster load times, and somewhat better graphics. But, I respect your opinion.

From a theoretical point of view, the music in this game certainly doesn't 'suck'. All opinions aside, Blythe & Joustra made short, albeit complex tracks for this game.
For example, the song used in level 19 (Coral Canyon) is in ⁵/₄ time, which is considered an odd time signature.
I was actually pretty impressed when I found out that Coral Canyon's music was in a 5/4 time signature
Man, I just keep coming back to this video over and over again, specially since I'm now going for this game's Retroachievements (which implies not only just playing, but also sweating a bit) and I keep cursing at the game for its overuse of vehicles, terrible gameplay design decisions, and its strong desire to be like Crash Warped (LIKE CRAAAASH THREEEEEE) but failing miserably.

Square Eyed Jak I was wondering what kind of accent you had. I didn't know what your accent was but now I know. As for your language I don't mind it either. I watch other youtubers who cuss as well. Lucahjin, TheMysteriousMrEnter, GameGrumps etc.
Yeah, my accent isn't full Australian but it isn't far off! :P As for the foul language, mist of the time I don't even realise how much of it I use until I watch the video back after the editing process. I swear TOO much I must say! :D
Square Eyed Jak believe it or not I made a really dumb comment here on youtube a long time ago. I was like twelve or something. Anyways I got angry because of some game cussing so i left a stupid comment making myself look like an idiot. I apologized for it, but now I cuss whenever I get angry when I'm playing a videogame. I try not to cuss in front of others because I like acting civilized but even I sometimes drop the f bomb when playing a frustrating game.
Don't worry, we've all embarrassed our selves on the internet at some point in time, I'm still writing the script for mine! ;) As for swearing, it seems to come out of me when I feel comfortable (most of time) however, if I'm talking to someone I don't really know, it goes away. Strange! :D
Crash cames are so mixed in opinion it aint even funny. Ive seen tons of people review crash 4 saying its great and lots that say it sucks, same with twinsanity. The original 3 have people saying crash 2 is better then 3, crash 3 is the best game in the series, crash 1 sucks, its just so fucking mixed that reviews for this game are unhelpful to say the least

I know this is old but can you explain why you hate the soundtrack? Saying that the whole soundtrack sucks because of Avalanche or Tornado Alley songs being unfitting is unfair.
Commenting while waiting for the review to load. I never understood the submarine, why does it only have 1 hit point like you normally do without a vehicle? It makes no bloody sense.
That submarine was the reason I rage quit the game years ago. And it was only warp room 2 xD
I mean this isn't the *worst* Crash Bandicoot game, that would be Crash Boom Bang. But this game had some fun moments. But for the most part, it was kinda bad. From the load times, to the dickish level design. It's not very good

The reason that PS2 loadings are long as fuck is that they wanted to add a minigame to the loading but when they were almost done some fucko noticed that Namco had made a patent that no one could make minigames in loadings, and then they tried to remove it but the game was nearly at its release date so they just removed the basic coding of it, so they only made to fully remove it in the greatest hits version of the game so there is the explanation of the humongous loading times
I can agree with most of the criticism but, I HIGHLY disagree with the music. I think it's the second best OST after Crash 2. I don't expect dark and menacing music during Tornado Valley, it's Crash Bandicoot, it's suppose to be goofy. At least it's very memorable. Gauntlet, Wizards and Lizards and especially Gold Rush are amazing tracks.
+BladeBlurX Sorry but even a year and a half after making this I disagree. I get this a lot and it's your opinion I get that, totally fine of course, just allow me to explain myself a bit better.
A lot of people are of the same opinion "it's Crash Bandicoot, it's supposed to be goofy" I never really understood this. Playing the originals as a kid and even still now, while Crash and some of the other characters are goofy, the overall tone and atmosphere of the levels was mostly dark and menacing in a cartooney way. The first game especially had some some really dark, sometimes intimidating music tracks like the Boulder Dash, Slippery Climb and Cave levels. In my opinion, a tornado level should be all of that, I should hear a nice bit of music but with a lot of wind noise blended in to turn a good bit of cartoon/danger type music into something quite intimidating.

Fair point. I just wasn't expecting a mood whiplash of the game getting all dark after a jolly snow level. It's either you go for a more subtle darker feel like Crash 1, which works, or do the goofy route of WoC. Both work in different ways, but I guess I appreciate the game keeping its motif. Plus, Fahrenheit Frenzy is pretty "menacing" in my opinion. But oh well, to each their own. I'll just have to explain my point better in a video one day, because even though I think this game isn't as good as I liked it in my childhood, it's still not awful. Just average.

The game wasn't that bad, it's like another PS1 game the only big complains are the loading times and bad bosses fights.
first thing bro video games are supposed to make forget about the real world and think that dangerous things are fun! Second this game some cool musics like the 1st level and first minecart level. Also some vehicles were fun like minecart, the ball, and the jeep to be honest i think the game deserves a 8/10 this game is especially those who think crash 3 is the best game the load times are the only thing it kills it
My opinion of this game is pretty biased. This was the first video game I ever played, and I spent most of my time playing it with my older sister. As you might guess, I have very fond memories of this game and I'll admit it kind of stops me from completely disliking this game.

Wow, I had forgotten about the load times. I'm so used to it loading within 5 seconds on my original Xbox (launched from the HDD). Even if you use a PC DVD drive in your Xbox (no longer practical) it takes less than 10 seconds. What platform were you playing on?

The load times are way shorter on the GameCube and Xbox versions, which isn't really suprising, as they are more powerful consoles.

If you're on a PS2 Slim Version and using the Greatest Hits/Platinum Version, most levels load in around 10-15 seconds. The PS2 Slim processor is slightly faster than the launch model (The Launch model is 293.3 MHz, while the PS2 Slim Processor is 299.7 MHz.) You really wouldn't think such a small increase would speed up loading times that much, but it actually does for quite a few PS2 games surprisingly...
I never experinced a load time in the GameCube version.
