- 'Stony the Road' author Henry Louis Gates Jr. points to the Reconstruction era for another example of an alt-right movement and a president who refused to denounce white supremacy.

Stephen, this interview was way too short. Prof. Gates was just warming up!
Agreed!
Agreed! Waaay too short
I agree, Gates deserved better treatment than this
At least he let him speak throughout
Yup, more!
I truly admire the work of Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. his shows are awesome and the insight he reveals is just spectacular.
Please someone make a movie about these 1800s-era former slaves who sat in Congress and the Senate. What an amazing story.
That would be an amazing film.
that is a great idea!
Absolutely! Would watch that -- totally agree.
Diana Mitford 🖕🏾here’s the attention you wanted.
@@Super21208 😂😂😂 pay no attention to that klansmen. Their time is dead.
Why was this interview so short? This had to be an extended one! Finally something with insight and information about the US history.
@Diana Mitford
What exactly were you thinking clicking on this video.... no wait, reading the rest of your comment, I know exactly what shit goes through your mind. Why don't go watch Gone With the Wind instead.
@Diana Mitford
Dr. Louis Gates' nickname is "Skip" and he does a program on PBS called Finding Your Roots which is about looking up people's ancestral background.
Gone With the Wind is mostly known today as an example of an outdated "Lost Cause" narrative that gained prominence in the late 1800s which tried rebrand the slave-holding history of America as being "noble" and white-washing the violent racism, which still lives on today. I think calling it merely a feminist story of female empowerment is revealing a very old fashioned point of view about the world today.... which it seems like you have.
Thus, please go away. I'm not interested in talking to you.
@Diana Mitford Here's a thought: if slavery wasn't so bad, why don't you agree to be my slave for one week? I won't even sell your kids down the river, or force myself on you. Just cook and clean and work the yard for me. It ain't such a bad thing, right? I mean, you can trust me to be a benevolent master, I think.
@Diana Mitford Do you hear yourself? No matter how well they were treated, they still lived as SLAVES.
amro mohasseb don’t talk to it
Thank you professor Gates. Too many people that don't know our nation's history minimize Trump's role in what is happening to our nation. I am angry, but my anger goes beyond the Democrat vs Republican divide. Those like myself that have studied American history can spot troubling signs that can strip my freedom. That is why we can laugh about Trump and his supporters, but we must connect their actions, words and beliefs to our history.
*"THOSE THAT FORGET THE PAST OUR DOOMED TO REPEAT IT"*
Well the way he speaks, the clamness of his personality just makes me adore a man of his staure more. Such a great man
@@sniferlip How ? Where is your proof
Seven minutes with him and 11 with hank? I like hank but c’mon this was interesting. Although I concede he might have had prior engagements that prevented his stay.
Showbiz.. you probably have to be grateful for the 7 minutes 😏
Unfortunately, Friday's show is a hodgepodge of interviews that were conducted throughout the week, so yeah - Gates could have had another engagement, or some other interview or bit might have run long and caused this conversation to end quickly. I do hope he'll get more time the next time he's on.
@Agent Fungus Not all of it. I think the monologue is definitely taped on Thursdays, but Emilia Clarke was on Wednesdays show, and Hank slipped in his interview and said his show premiered tonight, and Brockmire's new season started on Wednesday. The telltale sign is Stephen's suits and ties. You can match them to his interview segments earlier in the week. But to your point, I also hope that if the interview was longer, they share it either as a rebroadcast or here on UA-cam.
@Agent Fungus Oh, I agree! He even managed to pull off that tie he had to wear after losing that March Madness bet!
I went back and counted it, too! Good for you. Surely there were constraints, but after all the apparent buttering up of Jon Batiste and others, what I believe his true nature is finally was seen!
I would love to see the uncut version of this interview.
Better yet, watch PBS 9pm on 4/9 and see the program itself!
Learn every day. It is a good day when you hear about the reconstruction. Im from the Netherlands.
Wim Philipsen so true and I'm from England. X
Would have loved to have listened to him longer!
There are LSSC episodes where Stephen should go with 2 instead of 3 guests and let the second guest have more time.
This is one of those.
hehe.. Everyone talking about the interview being too short.. I guess that’s why he’s a successful Harvard lecturer.. He leaves you wanting to learn more.. In this case, he leaves you wanting to buy the book, so mission accomplished.. ;-)
He didn't cut the interview, the show only gave him 7 mins and Colbert did the cut.
True
I'm from the UK, so we didn't do it at school, but I genuinely don't think I've ever actually heard about the reconstruction before, which is a tad shocking.
You know more than most of my fellow Americans.
Really? You guys had a course on Reconstruction?
Hmmm. I am impressed.
Why would the British educational state would want to teach American History?
@@Etatdesiege1979 why do schools teach Greek, Roman or Egyptian history?
you replied to another comment with "Until we make children get excited about History and Social Studies we will still remain ignorant of our past." ..... which I agree with, if you do not learn from history then you are doomed to repeat it ....... and now you are basically saying (and yes I am paraphrasing) "what is the point in learning foreign history"
are you trying to look like a moron?
Daniel Alveo To deflect from teaching their racist history.
@@Etatdesiege1979 Er... We didn't is what I was saying.
Damn, I really wanted to hear him continue. Guess we all gotta see the documentary now 🤷🏻♂️.
I really wanted to hear more.
I love this man!!
May we have an extended and uncut interview, please? This was far to short for such an important topic and guest!
I love this man!!! History repeats itself, sadly. It’s great to have people like Henry Louis Gates Jr to remind us of our country’s dirty past.
Yup. That's his job. Keeping racial strife alive and well. How keen you are to see that.
Unlimited love and respect for Prof Gates from Mississippi, USA! This is a man of style and grace!
I could listen to Skip Gates for hours. He is so engaging and informative, and I love watching his teaching side come out when he interacts with the audience. I only wish the interview was longer.
I learned a lot from this interview, wish it had been a lot longer.
I would love to have this man research my family history. I adore 'Finding Your Roots', and I love listening to him talk about history. Henry Louis Gates, Jr is a treasure.
“what does that remind you of”
does that mean things are going to get worse they get better?
Claire Conover
If people just stand by yes.
The other piece that Dr. Gates didn’t mention but is a huge part of the context is that right around that time the US was going through an unprecedented economic expansion and industrial growth was making the South irrelevant in the economic sense. In the next decade you would the trifecta of issues that will give rise to the progressive movement: growing inequality, massive immigration ( providing cheap labor) and sporadic financial crashes and economic depressions. The American labor movement has its origins and the push for women’s suffrage has deep roots in this era.
But populist politics was very conspicuous at the time.
Yes. But in such times, also recall and take heart from the conversation had between Sherman and Grant after the first day of the Battle of Shiloh:
“Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day, haven't we?”
"Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow, though."
Also recall the words of a Union private from Ohio that day after discovering that it was futile to retreat: "Captain, give me a gun - The blamed fight ain’t got no rear!”
it means that history is a bitch and can't make up its mind.
He was pointing out similarities between the current president and former president Andrew Johnson in that they both do not denounce white supremacy
I need to make sure to catch this Reconstruction special. I don't know nearly as much about Reconstruction as I do something like the Civil War or WWII, but I do know it was a rough time in America that doesn't get talked about that much.
Me too! I love everything Gates puts his hand to and this should be stunning!
@@MsMarple Apparently, there's going to be a new episode of Finding Your Roots and the first part of that Reconstruction series, tonight. So a double helping of Mr. Henry Lois Gates Jr.
@@melvinshine9841 Yes, I already have them set to record. I LOVE Finding Your Roots! Best show on TV for me! Can't wait for the Reconstruction docu, tho I know I'll be very angry when I learn of yet another layer of abuse by people of my ancestry! Ugh, how awful. Well, I believe in a New World of God's making that will set things right permanently, but meanwhile I like to learn the truth about things. Jeremiah 10:23 says man was NEVER meant to rule himself & does it badly - especially when the motives are evil to begin with. Sorry, very passionate about the subject of racism - very evil. I'm privileged to have grown up in a very diverse community, even religously.
He is so intelligent and knowledgeable the 6:52 was heart breaking because he was ready to go even farther😊 Steven you must have him on again and this time for the entire show. No other guest. SOON please 😊
Too short! Get him back on for longer.!
Have Mr. Henr Louis Gates on again, this was a short informative interview/discussion. I treasure this show!
If I could sit down and have dinner with any person on earth it would be Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Not only is he a class act but also a world class educator. I can’t wait to read the book!
CBS... Please upload the extended web only interview... And, it is DR.
Lol. He's not an M.D. Give it up. Grasping for affirmation is hilarious. You've adorned yourself with quite the collection of titles yourself there Robin. Like a North Korean General. Oh yeah, Skip's books suck. He's just another race pimp with a PhD.
Lol, you yourself are stating he’s a PhD , but claim he’s not an md, this can’t use dr. 😂
@@21972012145525 "Thus" not "this". The "d" in Dr. is capitalized. Also the comma is superfluous. Gates' degree is in English and he could help you with this, but if you break an arm you would need a real Dr. See the difference? Lol.
@@johngarza124 OK, I'm lazy with capitalizations and I accidently wrote this instead of thus. Doesn't change the fact he's still a Dr. Can I ask what's your title?
@@johngarza124 and it still would be "Gates's" not "Gates'" as Gates is not plural and still would require an apostrophe + s. As far as I know, proper names still require the normal rules on possession only plurals get s'
I was semi-shocked when Dr Gates said Reconstruction isn't studied in school. It still was when I took US history in high school (1961-65, Eagle Pass, Tx). Two things I remember:
The KuKluxKlan was started with the purpose of keeping black people away from the polls.
Andrew Johnson missed removal by just one vote at his impeachment trial.
There was a lot more but now I'm vague on which facts were in that course and which ones I learned later.
I’m in AP US History I, and we do study the reconstruction, and we are currently studying it.
@@theflamebringer Thanks, it's a relief to know they're not burying something that important.
When I was in school, I think they mentioned in passing, but no more.
@@mikeblair2594 Another student who couldn't care less about the subject and didn't recall much about it?
When I took US history in 2010-11 in Utah, we spent quite a bit of time learning about the Civil War, and almost none on the Reconstruction. We pretty much skipped from 1865 to the 1920s.
''The Signifying Monkey'' by this great man... the seminal book for me throughout my 3 years of studying American History and the Politics of Slavery at University in England. I'm thrilled he has a new book out...it'll be on my study shelf next to all his others as soon it arrives... after I've read it of course. Sadly the interview with him was way too short!!!
Lol. The British preoccupation with American slavery has always fascinated me. I can hardly read a British author anymore. My guess is it's a way of redeeming your own self image amidst the collapse of the British Empire and Britain itself. "At least we're not like those hateful, racist backwards Americans". No. You're not like us. Thank God.
This man is too cool.
I remember Henry interviewing then sane and non-sleepy Ben Carson in late 1990s (I think it was in '98) regarding about his roots. I thought then what a brilliant brain surgeon he was. Alas...
"I am a brilliant brain surgeon. My brain is so brilliant, I will use it to brilliantly single-handedly surgeon upon my own brilliant brain to make it brillianter." ---- Later. -- "Aw. Now I'm sleepy all the time."
His show inspired me to want to search for my roots. A little did I know that what I was searching for is not to know where I come from...It was all abt wanting to know who I am (without the ego). This show led me to question these things...my Purpose. Love you Henry Louis Gates Jr. 💖🙏
Really enjoyed that but too short & ended abruptly
I live in New Zealand and I'm a huge fan of professor Gates, and this interview was far too short! Stephen, please have him on the show again and for a longer interview segment.
I want to hear more of this guy!!! 🤩 Fascinating!!
I love Finding Your Roots! I wish the season was longer.
MAESTRO:
Henry louis gates jr. BRAVO
This needed to be longer! So much to unpack!
Watch PBS Tuesday at 9pm (4/9/19)
Please make him a more regular guest!
Good grief.....it’s like Stephen wanted or had to move on. Far too short.....Hank could’ve waited for another night.
I'm gonna need some more of this guy. This was the most fascinating interview I've seen. Stephen did you need to go potty or something? Can you have him back for Monday? But like the whole show... All week? Can you do a weekend edition just with him?
This interview was heavily edited and cut short. Was it standards and practices, continuity, what? I would have listened to Dr. Gates talk for an hour!
Is it just me or did that interview end rather abruptly? I wonder why?
Time constraints? Maybe other guests? Or this is an edited version.
He's fun , smart as a whip .remember when he got arrested breaking into his own house ? ...
I look forward to learning something I don’t remember ever being taught in school.
This interview was waaaaay too short!! Please start having the important interviews go longer, I'm willing to miss celebrities for this!
awwww, time is already up? I love HLG-Jr!
wow - this is an amazing part of American history that needs more recognition - wanted to hear more, much more
It really felt like Stephen Colbert shut the interview down. I was so so excited to see Henry Louis Gates, Jr, PhD on a talk show. Huge fan of his various iterations of shows about family histories. His shows are truly fascinating. He could easily of devoted two or even three segments to Dr. Gates. He is so knowledgeable and articulate. Disappointing. Still, I bet his newest book is really worth a read. Reconstruction is kind of an unknown for most us historically. And could explain so much about what is happening now.
Mr. Gates was too abruptly cut off...seemed almost rude. What a shame...as he was far more fascinating than the other guests....
I learned a LOT. Thanks!
Fascinating interview.
Wow, Stephen ended that pretty quick....
Reconstruction was 12 years after the civil war when Republican led congress did everything they could to get black man equality (how times have changed). It was easier in reconstruction to vote in the deep south than it was in 1930s-1950s.
During these 12 years blacks could get an education, leading to what few rights civil rights we did get: ida grant, debuis, booker t washington.
President johnson sucked, he was the only southern senator that stayed in DC during the war, he was also a democrat. So when lincoln ran republican they added johnson to the ticket as VP cause he appealed to southerners and democrats. And everyone hated him, cause northerners were dem hating republican and southerners saw him as a traitor.
Mr Gates was careful to say "conservative" in the interview. The party is irrelevant as they have flipped policies. A conservative shot Lincoln. Conservatives impede voting. Conservatives brought on prohibition.
Racism knows no political party. The Jim Crow laws, the repealing of gains made during reconstruction had nothing to do with political party affiliations.
Blacks seem to be doing much, much better now especially in Dem run utopias like Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore. Right? Crime is down, more and more black kids are being raised in two parent homes and getting good educations. Right?
Please post the full interviews when your guests have something important to say
Brilliant man...
Reconstruction was taught in my school, but from a standpoint of the difficulties the south as states faced during reconstruction. Are we facing another period of resentment? I hope not..
Limited Reconstruction.
Many of us were not taught the full context and of Reconstruction.
Short! I wanted more!... guess I'll read the book!
*I love Dr Gates!!!*
History will repeat itself if people don't learn lesson from it.
Went and bought the book. I really want to delve into how this man thinks, and what he thinks is important for us to know.
I love that reconstruction is being discussed on late night tv
Yeah that ended really abruptly. They could've cut the Jeff Goldblum bit (which I found not at all funny) for more time with HLG.
I never knew any of this!
The only thing I got wrong about Reconstruction is that it lasted until 1877, having thought it dissipated by 1870 thanks to Andrew Johnson taking over after Lincoln's death. Thanks for this very educational segment. I love Professor Gates.
I will be watching this documentary.
Ken Burns should make documentary about these men.
I always watch ancestry on UNCTV/PBS every Tuesday night.
Dude walks in with a cane yes... O.o
He uses a cane because of an old injury. It isn't a show piece. :-)
I wish they had done a longer interview maybe put everything said after the 6:51 mark online?
this has to have been edited it was too abrupt
zizinnnn i was thinking the same thing... like as if cbs wouldn’t let a direct anti presidential message be acknowleged by steven, but listening to the last words before the handshake, it sounds like there was no edit, unless cbs went and took the audience clap track and reedited it with an edited end portion of the interview. eithwr way it was strange
It was edited but at least he got a decent amount of logic out.
I don't know...What does it remind me of....Boy...
I recall that Dr. Gates also told Steven he was also Swiss.
A class act. And a snazzy dresser!
This interview was way too short!
I have to admit I usually tune out on interviews that aren't being done with a celebrity I like BUT THIS was interesting! I was really enjoying this interview; Mr. Gates was likable and informative without being boring, I think because he still managed to portray interest in his own material, and I was genuinely interested in the subject and he was cut off too soon! Stephen, dude, you must have him back!
Man it was fascinating listening to him why did you cut him off, of what he was talking about.
Too short of a interview
Hang on. Did you say they were eligible to vote in _ten_ of the _eleven_ former Confederate states? Who was the hold-out?
That's what I wanted to know. We'll probably find out Tuesday night on PBS.
Probably blame it on the editing, however ending the segment right after Mr Gates drew a comparison between the end of the Reconstruction and the Trump Administration... Felt awkward.
But the Trump Administration is the best President for Blacks this era because he saw them as people that needed jobs. Democrats saw them as people to be kept in welfare and single parent families so that they always rely on government.
The one stupid thing about the current black America is how they hated black fathers and empower them as doctors, lawyers, businessmen. They all put them in football, or basketball or activist, or blue collar jobs dreaming their sneakers.
Too short of an interview
Reconstruction sounds like Soviet's Perestroika.
I’ll never know who that reminds him off. Noooo!
Mr. Henry Louis Gates is a pioneer in teaching ethic groups their true identity. He’s for the education of All people, but understands that keeping black people mid-educated will continue to cripple Humanity.
When I was in APUSH we spent quite a lot of time on the Reconstruction, actually. Almost as much time as on the lead up to the Civil War. Granted, I don't think our teacher was really good enough to impart upon us WHY it is important to know US history, so maybe people just zoned out for a month or so
Give 👏us 👏the 👏extended 👏interview 👏
yeah this guys sounds so wise :)
He stopped him like slap on his face..don't do that...
This man brought a gigantic bag of education with him
For all who want to hear more, watch the documentary Reconstruction. I saw 1/2 tonight. It was so heavy I couldn't watch the second hour at the same time. Glad my PBS station is repeating it several more times. Also get the book Reconstruction by Eric Foner, it really is the bible. Don't be sad that you didn't learn about real American history in school. There is nothing stopping you now.
The only problem I had with the documentary was they kept saying that race related problems were bad for decades! I thought it has been more like 154 years since the Civil War. So 15 decades. I don't think there has been a time in the US that racial hatred and all the unfair, unlawful, murderous, criminal striking out at African Americans has been out of style. It is very hard to see and hear the truth. Thank you Dr Henry L Gates, Jr.
United States of Amnesia
Why so short?????
I could hear Mr. Gates speak for hours about history. American school need to do a better job at teaching our history and not watering it down. It's best to learn from past, good and bad.
I feel like he had more to say...
Many are commenting on the education system. They do try. As a parent, never let school get in the way of a good education. Parents are the primary educators in a youths life. Most will go on to be curious and self learn many topics.
I'd never heard of Reconstruction, but then I'm Canadian.
Don't feel bad. Most white U.S. citizens have never heard of it either!
This interview was amazing and then it stopped! Shame
Could Netflix do a serie of Stormy Roads please?
