      @Diana Mitford
      Dr. Louis Gates' nickname is "Skip" and he does a program on PBS called Finding Your Roots which is about looking up people's ancestral background.
      Gone With the Wind is mostly known today as an example of an outdated "Lost Cause" narrative that gained prominence in the late 1800s which tried rebrand the slave-holding history of America as being "noble" and white-washing the violent racism, which still lives on today. I think calling it merely a feminist story of female empowerment is revealing a very old fashioned point of view about the world today.... which it seems like you have.
      Thus, please go away. I'm not interested in talking to you.

      @Diana Mitford Here's a thought: if slavery wasn't so bad, why don't you agree to be my slave for one week? I won't even sell your kids down the river, or force myself on you. Thank you professor Gates. Too many people that don't know our nation's history minimize Trump's role in what is happening to our nation. I am angry, but my anger goes beyond the Democrat vs Republican divide. Those like myself that have studied American history can spot troubling signs that can strip my freedom. That is why we can laugh about Trump and his supporters, but we must connect their actions, words and beliefs to our history.

      @Agent Fungus Not all of it. I think the monologue is definitely taped on Thursdays, but Emilia Clarke was on Wednesdays show, and Hank slipped in his interview and said his show premiered tonight, and Brockmire's new season started on Wednesday. The telltale sign is Stephen's suits and ties. You can match them to his interview segments earlier in the week. If people just stand by yes.
      The other piece that Dr. Gates didn’t mention but is a huge part of the context is that right around that time the US was going through an unprecedented economic expansion and industrial growth was making the South irrelevant in the economic sense. In the next decade you would the trifecta of issues that will give rise to the progressive movement: growing inequality, massive immigration ( providing cheap labor) and sporadic financial crashes and economic depressions. The American labor movement has its origins and the push for women’s suffrage has deep roots in this era.
      But populist politics was very conspicuous at the time.

      Yes. But in such times, also recall and take heart from the conversation had between Sherman and Grant after the first day of the Battle of Shiloh:
      “Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day, haven't we?”
      "Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow, though."
      Also recall the words of a Union private from Ohio that day after discovering that it was futile to retreat: "Captain, give me a gun - The blamed fight ain’t got no rear!”

    I was semi-shocked when Dr Gates said Reconstruction isn't studied in school. It still was when I took US history in high school (1961-65, Eagle Pass, Tx). Two things I remember:
    The KuKluxKlan was started with the purpose of keeping black people away from the polls.
    Andrew Johnson missed removal by just one vote at his impeachment trial.

    Reconstruction was 12 years after the civil war when Republican led congress did everything they could to get black man equality (how times have changed). It was easier in reconstruction to vote in the deep south than it was in 1930s-1950s.
    During these 12 years blacks could get an education, leading to what few rights civil rights we did get: ida grant, debuis, booker t washington.
    President johnson sucked, he was the only southern senator that stayed in DC during the war, he was also a democrat. So when lincoln ran republican they added johnson to the ticket as VP cause he appealed to southerners and democrats. And everyone hated him, cause northerners were dem hating republican and southerners saw him as a traitor.

      Mr Gates was careful to say "conservative" in the interview. The party is irrelevant as they have flipped policies. A conservative shot Lincoln. Conservatives impede voting. Conservatives brought on prohibition.

    • @gusmonster59

      Racism knows no political party. The Jim Crow laws, the repealing of gains made during reconstruction had nothing to do with political party affiliations.

      Blacks seem to be doing much, much better now especially in Dem run utopias like Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore. Right? Crime is down, more and more black kids are being raised in two parent homes and getting good educations. Right?

    The only thing I got wrong about Reconstruction is that it lasted until 1877, having thought it dissipated by 1870 thanks to Andrew Johnson taking over after Lincoln's death. Thanks for this very educational segment. I love Professor Gates.

    I have to admit I usually tune out on interviews that aren't being done with a celebrity I like BUT THIS was interesting! I was really enjoying this interview; Mr. Gates was likable and informative without being boring, I think because he still managed to portray interest in his own material, and I was genuinely interested in the subject and he was cut off too soon! Stephen, dude, you must have him back!

    Probably blame it on the editing, however ending the segment right after Mr Gates drew a comparison between the end of the Reconstruction and the Trump Administration... Felt awkward.

    • @earlnoli
      @earlnoli 3 роки тому

      But the Trump Administration is the best President for Blacks this era because he saw them as people that needed jobs. Democrats saw them as people to be kept in welfare and single parent families so that they always rely on government.
      The one stupid thing about the current black America is how they hated black fathers and empower them as doctors, lawyers, businessmen. They all put them in football, or basketball or activist, or blue collar jobs dreaming their sneakers.

    When I was in APUSH we spent quite a lot of time on the Reconstruction, actually. Almost as much time as on the lead up to the Civil War. Granted, I don't think our teacher was really good enough to impart upon us WHY it is important to know US history, so maybe people just zoned out for a month or so

    For all who want to hear more, watch the documentary Reconstruction. I saw 1/2 tonight. It was so heavy I couldn't watch the second hour at the same time. Glad my PBS station is repeating it several more times. Also get the book Reconstruction by Eric Foner, it really is the bible. Don't be sad that you didn't learn about real American history in school. There is nothing stopping you now.
    The only problem I had with the documentary was they kept saying that race related problems were bad for decades! I thought it has been more like 154 years since the Civil War. So 15 decades. I don't think there has been a time in the US that racial hatred and all the unfair, unlawful, murderous, criminal striking out at African Americans has been out of style. It is very hard to see and hear the truth. Thank you Dr Henry L Gates, Jr.

    Many are commenting on the education system. They do try. As a parent, never let school get in the way of a good education. Parents are the primary educators in a youths life. Most will go on to be curious and self learn many topics.
