100% Mat K. Those were the best days of the Supercars. Today it is getting very boring and set to become even more boring. All the greats of the sport have retired or moved on and it's a bunch of nobodies with no personality now. The cars have run a straight cut gearbox since the inception of the category, the gear whine has been around a very long time. I think even the Group A cars ran a Hollinger box back in the day
@@jmoz3213 it's easy to tell the difference. If the whine corresponds to engine RPM it will be the belt drive. If it corresponds to road speed it's the straight cut gears in the box. In most of the in car footage the box is the louder of the 2 (Continues to get louder even through the gear changes)
Good to see this pop up again. Love Skaife or hate him you can not deny he was excellent at what he did as a race driver. Seeing this kind of thing, regardless of driver, is fascinating stuff.
Always interesting to hear Skaifey’s feedback on car setup. It seems funny that not much changes from being at a V8 Supercar test day to being out at the kart club. Keep up the great work Jack, it gives a great insight into Perkins Engineering. Also good that the team stayed in the Mallee so to speak.
I line the first bit of the video, seeing Skaife deliberately manipulating the car not to make it go fast, but rather to see what it does and how it reacts. You can tell he was genuinely trying to help them even though they were technically rivals
Awesome! Would love to see more of these types of videos if you have more. I really enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes and hearing the technical side of racing these cars. I feel like a transition back to "H" pattern gearboxes may go a long way to addressing fans' feelings that the cars no longer represent a "stock" car. If Murphy can do a 2.06 at Bathurst using an "H" pattern box they aren't exactly slow.
Oh 100%. The problem with H pattern in the end was the drivers were too quick with say 3rd to 4th gear. They would smash the dogs off the front side of 4th gear and they would be shagged after say 400km. With the Holinger sequential, through the barrel engagement the drivers couldn’t beat the shift and gears would wear out at 2000-3000km not the dogs
@@perkinsengineering would Skaife's aggressive downshifting where he'd put it up on the rev limiter and directly select his gear of choice, rather than shifting through intermediate gears be harder on gearbox/driveline/motor than most?

So refreshing hearing the engine note and not the whine of a transaxle.
