I have lost 50 pounds over the last three years, reaching within the realm of my ideal weight. I didn't do any fad diet, or hit the gym for hours a day. There are three aspects to my approach. I stop eating when I'm no longer hungry as opposed to eating until I'm full. I walk everywhere within "walking distance"; for me, that's about a half hour walk. The third aspect is that I convinced myself that I don't like ice cream and other sweets. So essentially, I cut my calories, and increased my activity. It's that simple.
As someone with serious body dysmorphia, whose parents had to get UA-cam Premium for me because constant body-shaming ads were making me spiral really deeply to the point that there are lasting effects months later, THANK YOU DR. MIKE. I think I'm gonna cry, it's such a relief to see someone debunk this.
The thing about these are for me are that this makes my eating disorder flair up again. I see these “lose weight quick videos” and take it to the extreme of no food and over-exercise because “they said it worked for them”. @DoctorMike, I would love a video specifically about eating disorders and different things to healthily maintain weight.
"don't wait for the motivation start with the action" thanks doc I'm gonna follow your advice and finally complete my essay. I've been procrastinating for so long.
i remember watching this exact video when i was younger. i was anorexic then and hearing that cutting out carbs would increase weight loss by a lot and hearing that it would actually make me feel more full of energy made me stop eating carbs. i lost a lot of weight and i had to be put in hospital.
In fairness you can't blame them for that. what you say you learned from the video isn't even false. in fact, it's extremely well documented and really it's the most basic way to lose weight. your problem is that you had an eating disorder.
Being a dietetics student, I confess I made my own diet plan, activities to do everyday. It took a year for me to reduce around 7kgs(i guess 14 to 15 pounds)

I used to struggle a lot with my weight at my heaviest I was over 280 lbs and was probably like 70% body fat since I spent most my time just sitting 16+ hours a day. Last year at 32 I did what I needed to do in order to actually lose weight and become healthier, a year later I'm down to 197 lbs and probably somewhere around 15-20% body fat now and never felt better.
Thats awesome. I'm glad that you stuck with it for over a year and that you're a lot happier in your skin now. I'm also on my own weight loss/health journey, so hopefully i'll have some good results in a year!
@@ashm003 Avoid the scale early on, fasting is fantastic for getting any snacking habits under control, limit your caloric intake so that you're at a caloric deficit every day which for most people is about 1,500 calories daily, depending on your starting weight it will be better for your joints to just go for walks rather than trying to do exercises.
@@tukuiPat thank you for the helpful tips! I appreciate it. You're right about walking. As someone who deals with belly fat and constantly changes the mindset between “this isn’t healthy, work out” and “it won’t hurt you, you’re enough, just ignore it”, i wish it was that easy. I eat pretty healthy, and I exercise some time a week. I might just eat too much fast food and don’t exercise. Just, I wish it was easier.
Thanks for content like yours. I spent most of my teens and 20s trying to do crazy moonshot ideas over short periods. While that can be fine it has to be with making small changes that you can keep at long term. I only really started making progress a few years ago when I finally got that through my head. It's hard boring work and nothing is ever going to make it not be hard work.

I (male) did lose 30kg in a few months when I was in my early 30s, by eating well and exercising. My real victory was NOT putting all the weight back on once I put the chocolate and cheese and biscuits back into my diet. In fact, I kept on losing more weight, which was scary. Doing fine now, fortunately.

Great job for calling this out. What planet is this individual living on? I weighed 127 kg in 2012, 61.7 yesterday morning, and I am still not done (almost though). Losing weight takes major effort and, depending on how much there is to lose, takes a long time. I wish it were different, but it isn't. Reality is what the facts are, not what we wish it to be. Weight loss *is* possible for everyone, but we have to be willing to pay the price and listening to nonsense like this is going to discourage people, not encourage them. So, Doctor Mike, great job!
4:57 THANK YOU!!! Honestly, one of the things that drives me nuts about both TikTok and UA-cam is patronising edits. That and pointless stuff like those text to speech intros some TikTokers use (I kinda want to say its designed to make things easier for the illiterate viewers but when the text is saying nothing that adds anything to the video it just feels even more pointless).
Thank you for calling out these toxic "quick fix" videos. They set unrealistic expectations and harm people’s relationships with food and their bodies. It's important to focus on health and well-being rather than chasing impossible standards. Also, the "no carbs" trend is super dangerous, especially for athletes-carbs are essential fuel. Diet culture unfairly demonizes all carbs, even though fiber and sugars are carbs too.
Watched this video while incline-walking on my treadmill! That’s one of the little lifestyle changes I’ve been making, since I enjoy UA-cam. So instead to watching it while sedentary, I do so while getting some exercise:)
Any channel, or anyone, rather, that says you can lose X amount of weight in a ludicrously short amount of time is giving out misinformation. I lost 60 lbs, but that took me five months, not a week or two... with dietary or lifestyle changes. Thanks Dr Mike for debunking this! 💪
Hey, if you have a limb removed or give birth to the child you're pregnant with you can lose significant amount of weight in a very short amount of time!
About the cat and cow excersise, it actually does do something for me. I discovered this by accident while doing yoga, I noticed that everytime I did cat and cows I passed gas. Sometimes I bloat a lot, extremely uncomfortable, literally feels like I'm a *peewoop* ballon about to explode. So one of those occasions I decided to try the cats and cows and was shocked (and very relieved) that I actually passed some gas and the discomfort immediately lessened. It did not make it go away completely but at the very least I stopped feeling a bad turn away from exploding. So, my fellow bloated friends, next time you feel like you will pop try some cats and cows, might help ease the discomfort a little bit.

You didn't, did-ya'?
I need to do the same, good luck for the both of us!
Most relatable comment to ever exsist ngl
I still don't understand what this advice means, since action requires motivation to get the motivation to do the action.
i remember watching this exact video when i was younger. i was anorexic then and hearing that cutting out carbs would increase weight loss by a lot and hearing that it would actually make me feel more full of energy made me stop eating carbs. i lost a lot of weight and i had to be put in hospital.
Bright side is in their courtroom era
Ok to be serious this is not ok they can't be producing pro crash diet culture
@@nathanialisalongverylongname lol
In fairness you can't blame them for that. what you say you learned from the video isn't even false. in fact, it's extremely well documented and really it's the most basic way to lose weight.
your problem is that you had an eating disorder.
@@BloodChampagneless carbs is one of the best ways to lose weight.
Being a dietetics student, I confess I made my own diet plan, activities to do everyday. It took a year for me to reduce around 7kgs(i guess 14 to 15 pounds)
for someone who is only a few kgs off is ok, i have 60 extra pounds i must lose...
@@omegarugal9283 the more extra you have, the easier it is, it's a logarithmic progression: the lower your weight, the more difficult it is to lose weight, up to a point where you just unalive yourself
"Don't wait for the motivation; start with the action." Absolutely the best part of this video!!
i appreciate how the doctor in the video emphasized the need for sustainable lifestyle changes. dealing with pcos-related infertility, i understand the struggle of finding effective solutions. at 32, i faced similar obstacles until i turned to Aspect Health, whose support significantly improved my chances of conceiving. their approach effectively addressed my insulin resistance, offering real hope on my journey toward motherhood.
"i lost belly fat without dieting by farting, dropping water weight, and changing my diet!" brilliant, that'll take off the extra 100 pounds i'm carrying 🙄
I'm pretty sure farting actually increases your weight by a marginal amount because the gasses are less dense than air.
@@jonmendelson1104test this by farting...constantly
The only answer to “lose belly fat in a week” is liposuction
If it's just for a dress for a date, put on shapewear 😂
There was a scene in one of the Saw movies that gave another way to do it, but I don't recommend that method.
@@jonmendelson1104😂😂😂
You know Dr. Mike is passionate about debunking nonsense when a video makes him curse. Thank you for putting a foot down on this!
mike i just got surgery any watching your videos helped a lot with stress thank you
SOMEONE HAD TO CALL THIS CHANNEL OUT. I was wondering for years when it was gonna happen. Thank you Mike
I saw one UA-camr tell you how you could lose 10kg in one day and she went step by step and then showed her photoshopping the photo to make her look 10kg lighter 😂 she did it as a joke and it was funny
Similarly if you have a limb removed (or I suppose give birth) you can drop significant weight in less than a day!
I have a mostly sedentary lifestyle so exercise routines such as those on youtube can be kind of painful afterwards as im not used to it 😅.
Do you have any advice on how to stay consistent and stick to your goals? I used to wait until i felt motivated to exercise but i know now that motivation isnt reliable. That being said, however, it's difficult to continue with a certain regime for a long period of time, so i was wondering how you stuck with it for a year.
@@ashm003 do something that is easy to stick to. you have a very wrong idea that you need to do some routines. just go walk, every day, and drink more water, especially before eating. instead of a snack, drink water.
Omg pomegranates, grapefruit, salt (which she just said she’s cutting down on) and honey (which isn’t really any better for you than sugar. Both are ok in moderation) in a blender with nothing else would be DISGUSTING. The pomegranate seeds and grapefruit pulp!? Not a drink, that’s a gross fibrous pudding.
Just found this channel. Man love how this Dr break things down. Found my new favorite channel.
I'm currently feeling miserable and I can't see my doctor earlier than Thursday and your commentary put a smile on my face. Even though I was kind of hurting during the whole thing.
Literally sounds like an AI script. Oh god, AI is going to be terrifying for the medical industry, isnt it?
As someone who deals with belly fat and constantly changes the mindset between “this isn’t healthy, work out” and “it won’t hurt you, you’re enough, just ignore it”, i wish it was that easy. I eat pretty healthy, and I exercise some time a week. I might just eat too much fast food and don’t exercise. Just, I wish it was easier.
if it was easier, then there would be even more starving people on this planet.
Just take it one step at a time. Slow and steady. I lost 45 pounds in about a year. Healthier and less likely to come back the slower you go.
Mike's "WHAT EXPERTS?!!!" Was so impassioned and true frustration.
I’m so glad you are bringing this up because it’s good to know how they are lying to us.
Thanks for content like yours. I spent most of my teens and 20s trying to do crazy moonshot ideas over short periods. While that can be fine it has to be with making small changes that you can keep at long term. I only really started making progress a few years ago when I finally got that through my head. It's hard boring work and nothing is ever going to make it not be hard work.
hey doctor mike! can you do a full video surrounding your best tips to aid bloating and ibs symptoms at home/over the counter? thanks :) love your videos btw
5:56 the way you said that expresses the pure hatred you have twards this channel, i love this guy.
I am soooooooo glad for ur Chanel. There’s soooo much BS online its crazy. Loosing weight takes TIME and effort… ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank You Mike, My Sister Was Trying It For 3.2 Weeks And I Showed Her This Video And Her Eyes We're Opened
I love seeing Dr. Mike get angry/flustered at all the misinformation. 😂😂
7:06 A pinch of salt? I thought they said earlier to cut down on sodium.
“”Don’t wait for the motivation, start with the action”” Well said 👏❤️
Fast and rapid weight loss is not safe weight loss. Slow and steady wins the race with weight loss. Keep up the good work with getting the right info out there about dieting.
Reducing salt intake is actually a good tip, as there is so much hidden salts in foods, you'll be over recommended daily intake in one bite.
very much depends on what you eat. there are people who don't get enough salt. basically if you're eating processed foods, you're getting enough salt. more than enough
The video he's reacting to is why I've always struggled with my weight. There is just so much noise out there. I'll try something, it doesn't work, then I feel like a failure and it gets worse.
I had a personal trainer and worked for weeks and didn’t lose a thing bc of diet . You can workout but if you’re not balancing a healthy meal, it’s a lot harder
The toughest thing is changing ur lifestyle but once u change it it feels amazing
I cannot thank you enough for this video, Dr Mike! It is so important for people to wake up and stop following misleading channels. I love your passionate reactions 😂
I agree 💯
Excersize stop eating junk drink more water do a hobby instead of sitting in front of the tv which causes more eating or snacking
I always like it when one of those "most popular youtube channels" never crossed into my bubble. Feels like i'm doing something right when the "most-popular" part of the algorithm flatout ignores me.
Completely agreed
BrightSide is incredibly bad... They also upload so fast and so frequently that many of their videos contradict themselves... My guess is that they just have a team of graphic artists combined with fair use clips and LOTS of AI pumping those videos out to get monetised.
This is why there needs to be more new laws regarding stuff online. They're getting rich from misinformation. How is that not illegal yet. If you buy something that isn't as described there are laws to protect us. Same should go for this BS.
I've heard them referred to as "content farms" And what you describe is exactly what they are. The minute I hear a robot voice, I click off and block the channel.
These days they don't even need artists or editors, it could easily be generated from scratch and uploaded without a single human being involved.
It’s called AI generated content.
They are a Russian content farm. Pretty fascinating phenomenon, if you look into. They hire people around the world to pump out the most random things, for multiple channels. It's a big business, many of these content farms are owned by the same handful of companies from Russia and Cambodia.
These are my fave videos Dr Mike. The debunking hack ones. Still trying to get thru the Gundry one. I get so fed up w him I need to take breaks to recover. Thanks for what you do to support medical science 🙏🏼
So, Doctor Mike, great job!
i love how u just shout at the video...FANTASTIC! I know, if it isnt written on a laptop I'm lost also....
1:46 Dr.mike "can't believe I just cursed"
Me "my guy, you have been cursing the last couple of videos"
its really hard to lose weight when you use an electric wheelchair and don't eat that bad
I LOVE how frustrated you get! So adorable!
@7:13 Dr. Mike missed them saying to add salt to the drink just 2 minutes after they said to cut salt from food :(
Here's your 'no hate comments' blessing. Also, Mike, can you give us an update on your current life as a doctor?
4:43 this meme is SOOOOOOOO damn CUTE IM CRYING
The channel "How To Cook That" debunks this channel a lot!! Plus a few others that do "food hacks". Especially the dangerous hacks!
Watched this video while incline-walking on my treadmill! That’s one of the little lifestyle changes I’ve been making, since I enjoy UA-cam. So instead to watching it while sedentary, I do so while getting some exercise:)
The fact that people still thought that this worked is sad.
The majority of them are almost definitely young, impressionable children which makes it even worse. It's not their fault.
6:08
So you don't really feel like dieting.
Mike: Except you're not.
People always want quick results, I really wish it was like the movies but you got to put in work
Seeing a dietician during my worst point with my eating disorder helped me find peace in so many areas. I still struggle, but I feel SO much better.
Can you please bring in a dietician to destroy dieting culture?
0:21
Actually it is possible, however, literally cutting the fat off is not a recommended procedure.
Also, I believe Liposuction is that quick (never really looked that far into it though, because wow, does it seem dangerous)
Or naturally you can lose belly fat in a week
But maybe just a few millimeters
'Don't wait for motivation, just do the action' I love it
Dr Mike is the best doctor i have seen on social media
What about that shredded metabolism guy that comes on in an ad before every other UA-cam video?! I'd love to see you talk about him 😅
Vshred? He's the biggest grift in fitness
8:20 I think sarcastic Dr. Mike is my favorite Dr. Mike 😂
As a personal trainer, this is hilarious to hear lol
worst part is people who are insecure will believe their words and it can lead to so many problems including EDs. I'm happy Dr. Mike talks about this, honestly.
I laughed so hard. I honestly hate videos like the one you’re critiquing. I used to work in the fitness industry and it’s so frustrating that people want to lose weight without making lifestyle changes… they always wanted the quick fix.
"How I lost fat in ONE WEEK!" Simple, plastic surgery. No need for the rest of the video! Just tell people to get it surgically removed!
8:54 I would expect LegalEagle to wear a suit at the beach.
*Indochinooooo*
three months ago I started eating like a shark, only when im hungry. I cant go to the gym cuz i had two car crashes, only messed up my shoulder and other one my knees... but since then, i try walking at least 7k steps and I lost 10kg since November. hopefully this info helps u if u wanna lose weight. Peace and love from Croatia!
UA-cam should warn people over false information.
It is so heartwarming to see you and bringing all this misinformation in the forefront. Now atleast liars will be scared.
It's so sad we don't know what's real these days.
That brightside video had to be AI made in some way. it feels so unreal.
Your reaction is hilarious! Thank you for all the advice!
Please never stop debunking popular videos promoting misinformation. Thank you dr Mike!
It's always best just to go slow. Make gradual changes and do it your way. Go to the gym, change what you eat, and how you eat.
4:31 As someone with ulcerative colitis, I can say that there is an unreasonable number of people who think 'a sprinkle of tumeric powder' is all you need lol
