My husband had fungus on one of his toenails, and couldn't be bothered to do anything about it. Then, one day, he injured the toe in question, and asked for my first aid advice. It was clear that he was going to lose the nail, since it (the nail) was broken, and half lifted off the toe. So, besides getting things to treat the injury, I also ran to the pharmacy to grab a topical fungal treatment. Since he was able to actually apply it under his toenail, the treatment worked really well. His new toenail has grown in most of the way, and there is no sign of the fungus.
As an Optical Lab Technician at a large private practice in Canada I can confirm, for eyeglasses yes, it is monopolized by a few frame distribution companies. These companies have now in recent years also taken majority shares in lens manufacturing companies, physical optometry/dispensing stores and online retailers, completely spreading over the entire market. It is making it hard for independent optometry/dispensing offices to keep up with access to new technology and low pricing. This even trickles down to affect medical equipment sales and tech support for independent practices.
@@LunaticDesireIt's not AS bad in Europa (yet) but most of the big optometry chain stores are owned by the same parent companies. If you need glasses I would advise to avoid the chain stores and find an independent store. Usually better service and product quality anyway.
@@TheAverageDutchman I'd advise to buy glasses at a state clinic, not even at independent stores. If there's an ophthalmology department, there usually will be a store right there. I order new lenses for my glasses at a state ophthalmology clinic store and they're usually three times cheaper than the same lenses at any other private store, while maintaining the same quality.

I was a CNA and was in a Facebook group for CNAs at the time. People were always spelling it HIPPA so I took it upon myself to memorize the acronym in order to correct this misspelling while sounding credible. To this day I still know HIPAA is the good ol' Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Put in place at the dawn of the EMR (electronic medical record) age since computerizing all this data began to open a lot of legal doors which left patients in danger of having their health information tied to their identity and it being shared with or without good intentions without their consent. One might say all healthcare workers, from the janitors to the administrators, must take a HIPAA-cratic oath.

That thing about the penicillin allergy is so accurate! I swear it's the most common listed allergy for my patients and almost all of them say it was apparently a childhood reaction they had to it and they don't remember it at all.
That penicillin fact is super interesting! I found an article on it from U.S. Pharmacist. I'm going to share it with my mom, who had an allergic reaction to penicillin decades ago.
It's important to note what the reaction was exactly. If it was a full blown anaphylaxis and she can recall it, then it is very likely she's truely allergic. However, most patients don't recall the reaction as it happened many years ago and often as a child. In this case, it is very common that a benign (often viral) rash was mistaken as a penicilline allergy. Why? Kid gets pharyngitis, most pharyngitis are viral. Doctor doesn't want to take the risk as it is sometimes tricky to distinguish viral from bacterial and starts antibiotics (depending on the area we are more conservative now). The infection was viral afterall and the patient develops a viral rash which he would get even without antibiotics, but very commonly develops a few days after other symptoms, exactly when antibiotics are often started. If a patient doesn't recall the reaction, they're most likely not really allergic. If you had an anaphylaxis, you'd probably remember the event. If the patient is not responsive, you don't take the risk of course. But otherwise, you can give a test dose of penicillines under supervision.
The dorito one is actually more likely to shock royalty bc after the distribution of shelf stable dried spices instead of fresh ones, it became cheaper and easier to access so the poorest classes were able to season food. As it became more prevalent nobility slowly used fewer spices other than salt bc they wanted to show off how high quality the meat was, the logic was that peasants needed to use spices to mask the flavor of lesser quality cuts of meat that may be spoiled and taste Bad therefore fewer spices highlights luxury meat. It’s dumb but it happened 😂

Crocs are great for fishing. Cause like flip flops you’re not worried that they get wet, but unlike flip flops you can put them in 4WD and they don’t fall off or get stuck in the mud. And they’re more protective. Crocs are awesome.

My entire life I knew the ranch Doritos flavor by the name of "cooler ranch" until one fateful day where I looked at the bag and it was simply "cool ranch" on the label. I felt crazy. Even after verifying for myself that, yes, at one point it was COOLER ranch, it still always disconcerted me. Today, hearing Dr. Mike call it COOLER ranch, I am finally reassured. I am not the only one who still defaults to that. Thank you, Dr. Mike, you have eased a weirdly-specific, no-reason anxiety of mine.
THERE’S NO “ER” AT THE END OF IT???
@@dream_walker9726 Not anymore. Now it's just cool ranch.
I remember when it went from cool ranch to cooler ranch. It also changed from nacho cheese to nacho cheese. Didn't ever know it changed back
I’m so glad in the UK it’s just… “Cool original”
I think those are known as "cool original" here. I don't like them. I wonder if it's meant to be ranch.
Edit: just noticed the above comment, I guess that's a yes then haha
I’m case anyone was wondering: the reason bacteria is the plural of bacterium is because it is in the Latin chart 2nd Neuter ( which takes um as nominative singular and a as nominative plural). A lot of Latin rooted words use the singular us and plural i as they are in the more common 2nd Masculine chart.
alumnus and alumni
I love the linguistic info breakdown! So much of it in medicine, really interesting when you get into it.
And there's the feminine alumna and plural alumnae. It always tickles me that, in English, alumni and alumnae are pronounced like the opposite gender version in classical Latin.
And some words come from Greek! So the plural of octopus is octopodes instead of octopi
Someone watched too much polýMATHY. 😄 (I prefer 'octopuses' though.)
5:33 Crocs make great water shoes for when you go to a pool or the beach. They have grip so you can walk on rocks and they protect the bottoms of your feet, they can get wet, they dry easily, they protect your feet from most sharp objects, and when I was a kid I used to wear them all the time to the beach
i used to get weird looks from friends because i would say "i have to see the vampire" or "i went and saw the vampire today." Was logical to me since i was having blood tests... makes for fun times watching them try to work out what i meant
I TELL MY PATIENTS, “Ok you’re all set, before you leave, head upstairs and let the vampires get you.” The funniest is when I’m using a translator… there’s a little delay and then everyone is laughing!!!
When the blood mobile (mobile blood donation) is scheduled to come to a Sanitation garage, I'll announce it by saying the vampires are coming. "Also, the vampires will be in Bx1, 3 & 4 tomorrow and CRS on Wednesday."

Dr. Mike, HIPPA is health information privacy & portability act meaning your info can go with you without the fear of said info being misused.
In case you know: is this an international/world-wide situation or limited to North America? Cheers from Europe :)

I work at a allergy specialist clinic at a hospital and what you said about penicillin are actually so true. Over the past 1,5 years I have been working there I think I can count on one hand on how many people that actually where allergic.
Love the Dr. Glaucomflecken shout out! Your appearance on his podcast was one of my favorite episodes so far! Also loved that time you chatted with Phil DeFranco, that was mega wholesome.
Hi, from a fellow nurse aide! Are you still a CNA?

Glad I scrolled a bit before commenting. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the plural of Hippopotamus is hippopotami
@poro3246 Turns out, she's allergic to codeine and I just have that stuck in my head as penicillin for some reason. 😂🤦♀️
Hey, anybody can cook tasty stuff with prime ingredients, but it takes some serious skill to make a delicious meal from what you get if you pour a bucket full of swamp through a sieve.
