We got hit with 50 ft seas on the way to the Med once. Granted our ship was 6 or 7 times bigger. It’s interesting to see how different people react to less than smooth seas. However you did it and had the foresight to have your family fly. That’s a great captain right there.

That was smart Braden to put the rod and right next to the bridge door and then to tether it to the railing so in case of fish does hook and then takes the rod away he can't take it all away. Being a past owner of a Selene 60 I can attest that the Caribbean seas are no place for trawlers as you experienced. I have sailed on a 38 ft sailboat and there is a major comfort difference and you can always sleep in the main cabin on whatever side the boat is leaning wedged in with a Lee cloth. It’s was a wise decision to send the family ahead by air. Best wishes.
Thanks for sharing guys - That was cool seeing how the anchor attaches to the front of your boat. Would the anchor weigh over 200 pounds - it looks like your anchor can be taken apart for storage. Your fish at 5:05 was still alive, kind of, opening and closing its mouth. It moves like a chicken with its head cut off, just reverse!

try some ten meter waves on the north atlantic in winter with winds over 75 kts. OK, it was a 2500 ton CG cutter, add to that we lost use of starboard screw on a ship with a centerline rudder, took 15 deg. of rudder to go straight. Lost both lifeboards and all of the floats, but she got us home. Did a lesser storm cross on the QE2, seems like half the passengers were seasick, mind you the champaign didn't spill out of the glasses. The Queen didn't roll with the waves but the pitching was annoying.
Dirona is a 52 and it has been through bigger waves in the Atlantic and up off of Alaska. All full displacement nordhavns can handle conditions the seas throw at them. They are built, overbuilt to be rough seas boats. To that end, the 55 is still one of the most desired, if not the most popular of Nordhavn models. She is just the right size that is needed for far out ocean cruising.
I have been on a ship in the Golf of Mexico & the swell's were pushing or ship backwards. You could not see a ship near you when it went into the lole of a wave.
I think the bouncing of the vessel was best illustrated in the night shot when the moon was being covered by some clouds and you can still see the water cuz at one point you see the tip of your anchor dear almost in line with the moon in the next the anchor gear in line with the water
Well it seems like you need a little bit larger yacht to be able to take on those heavy season be more comfortable I would highly recommend the nordhaven N 145
You're quick to track stabilizers have you ever thought about tacking to your destination in other words the zigzag route so you're taking the waves on the side instead of the bow where the stabilizers can do the best job?
The tender you have now is so much better looks so much nicer than the one that came with the boat especially after the original one got jammed underneath the dock
Maybe invest in a couple of hammocks Braden for the next time you have a rough passage. You should be able to find a few places to hang them from. Note, I don't mean the "Carolina" style ones that are stretched wide, I'm thinking of the camp style hammock that cradles you (and can be a PITA to get in and out of).
Longer passages are often just an endurance test. Ma Nature and Neptune will toss what they will at you and you just get to take it. Some trips you win and some Ma Nature and Neptune get to laugh.
Call me crazy but I've always wanted to be on a boat like that in huge waves as I know that boat can take way more. So I'm curious I remember you had a sad post maybe a year ago having to say goodbye to your dogs passing, is that a different one or am I stuck in some time warp?

How slippery are those teak decks, especially in the presence of any water? We've put some carpet runners down, and it seems to have made things a lot safer!
When I was younger I worked on a open water tug . After about a week them waves just rock you to sleep . Just a matter of getting use to it . Was an engineer
Night time is bad for sea sickness, if you can't see the horizon. I used to wedge myself into my rack in rough seas. Just so i wouldnt roll out. Put my boots under the edge of my mattress to help me stay put too.
Glad you guys arrived safely. I don't have a boat you can live on but I have experienced six foot Seas it was bad enough for an afternoon of fishing I can't imagine four days non-stop I love being on the water but I can see how that would quickly get very old to say the least

Careful guys you're in a grp halt boat and it's harder to fix grp in a crunch than it is steel or aluminum so watch out for aquatic hazards including logs thay will hole in your ship
Sounds like you need astronaut sleeping bags like they had on the space shuttle or on the space station maybe it'll hold you in place so you don't levitate above the bed and heavy seas
I too was amused but it's unfair I guess to compare as to experiences and the size of the vessel. When you see swells so big you can't see a Freighter when she goes down in the well or you see water spraying on the deck of an Aircraft Carrier this wasn't bad. I don't think you should be insulted. If you would have had to of been in your Dinghy you'd of felt it far worse. It's all relative. Love your boat, this old salt would sail with you any day.

6ft ant nothing compared to 12 ft my parents used to own a 42ft Hatteras and my dad used to take divers out to the flower gardens and the divers could not even stay down stairs they had to stay up on the flybrige
If your weather window was gonna be bad, Why didn't you wait or go over to Luperon in the DR, Then cross the Mona to the SW corner of PR. Why did you push it so hard straight through. Remember when cruising you can't set time tables. Ya get there when ya get there. Stay safe.

I don’t understand why the two of you bought a boat. Every video that I watch of yours you are complaining about the motion of the ocean. That IS what the ocean does. You have to stay out on it in order to develope proper SEA LEGS. Sitting in a Marina all the time makes no sense. Eventually, you will either learn to love the sea as I do, or you will give up the boat and stay on land.
Anybody that has crossed the Atlantic from the Bahamas to Puerto Rico knows to expect that kind of ocean conditions. So, repeating it and complaining about it every 2 minutes during a 22 minute video is kind of boring. For those that have done this trip a few times and even better for those that are planning to undertake it in the future, it would have been great if you gave more details. Maybe a chart showing where you left from, your location at various points, your destination and other points of interest could have been useful. It looks that you left Great Exuma using the passage between Great Inagua and Turks and Caicos (that explains the small fishing boat). At some point I think I recognized Mona Island so I assume you crossed the always rough Mona Passage and ended up somewhere in the West coast of Puerto Rico . If that is so, you had a great fast passage considering your 4 feet waves. Congratulations on Mermaid Monster. She is a well maintained seaworthy boat.

50ft seas that aren’t stacked are fine. These were 6-10ft stacked just obnoxious seas if that makes sense.

I remember feeling our props come out of the water and I was surfing the 15 foot waves with our 48 ft egg Harbor. Never got sea sick.

6ft was the small average. There were 15ft waves and larger.
