Matt, thanks for the detailed advice. Matt, I forgot to mention that I would prefer to stay with the APS-C format at this stage. This is partly due to cost - I am looking at spending up to $1600 for the camera. My Total budget for camera and 1 or 2 lenses is $3000. On my shortlist are: Nikon D7200, Fujifilm X-T2, Pentax K3 II, Panasonic GH4 or G85 and the Olympus OM D M1 Mark 2 (due for release). Sadly I could not find any adapter for other APS-C systems that would support Samsung NX lenses so I am going to follow the general advice and sell. Its really a great pity that Samsung bailed. Even now, the NX1 competes with leading APA-C cameras for 4k video. Also, thank you to Harry, Media Arts, Triztan, Jim, Villegas24, ds.techie, John J and Tooth D and everyone else for you help. Much appreciated.
Agreed with Matt. If there is some resale value, he should sell immediately. If not, he should buy some batteries (they go bad earliest) for NX-1, charge them 50% and keep them in the refrigerator (for maximum storage time) to use the system as long as possible.
I was going to say use it until it breaks, but it's a really expensive body. If it still has resale and your shutter count etc is still low, maybe consider selling it. Can lenses that mount on the Samsung be retained and used on another system? If they can't, it may be the strongest argument in favour of switching to a new system now.
Firstly...don't continue to invest in a dead system. If your system still meets your needs then stick with it, why change if it works perfectly. Take the time to carefully consider your next system choice, you don't need to rush into it given your gear is still very capable. Some might suggest the NX1 was ahead of its time on release so there is plenty life left in your system, despite Samsung pulling the plug. Hey everybody pulled the plug on film cameras years ago and there are still loads of people shooting film with old cameras :-D
Hi you should keep it still best APS-C cam if you like it no need to lose money for resell and buy something else that will be similar or worth ? i dont know your photo skills but i doubt that you do use 100% potential of the NX1 wich is huge
I agree with Matt's suggestions. If there is enough resale value to get you an alternative system, then it might be worth making the transition to another system if you REALLY wanted to. I'm not sure if the reason to sell should be solely based on the fact Samsung has stopped making more NX1 products. I think the bottom line is if the Samsung system is more than satisfactory for the photos and videos you like to make, then I don't see a problem in keeping it for as long as you can.. save up on the side for an eventual move to another camera system whenever and whatever that is.. but, if it ain't broken, don't need to fix it. Keep shooting with what you have if it makes you happy and delivers what you want.
o bought nx1 yesterday. its more than 2 year old camera and still the best one for 4k and biggest apcs pixel count. Also there is hacks you can shoot 360mb/s bitrate..which is like 700mb/s in h.264 terms. Its amazing camera and will be for next 3-4 years.
The camera still remain good value even at 2017 now. because it is a great video camera shoot 4k. no overheating issue. so people can adapt nikon and other brand lens and make it a great video camera. However the native lens value drop quite a lot. because the native lens can only be used on samsung camera. very limited usage. for example a new 85mm f1.4 used to sell $999. now can be find $400-500 used. That is crazy value.
I really think it comes down to how much you want to spend. There is no reason to just jump ship now if you are happy with the your work. If you don't want to spend much, just stay with Samsung and buy lenses that could be mounted to another manufacturer. Maybe sell a few of your less frequently used NX lenses now that you can probably get some good money for them. I would just plan to move to a new eco-system in a few years when you want to upgrade your body and purchase accordingly. I really like the Fuji XT-2 for mirrorless and I own a bunch of Nikons (including my fave D500) but like Matt said they are not the best for hard-core video. Good Luck and just keep shooting.
I'd say keep it but try not to invest more into it. Not sure at this point what you would be investing in besides batteries? The reason being, if it's performing for you then no need to sell. Because it's discontinued, I bet as long as the lenses are kept in good condition, you'll always be able to sell them to other NX users down the road because there are no replacements being made.
No, he clearly said G85. He even called it as a "bargain camera" which is something that cannot be said about the GH5 which sells for more than twice as much as the G85.
it's like a used car, either keep it till it's worthless and get your moneys worth or cut your losses and sell up now. panasonic m4/3, nikon and canon all have the lenses you need as does fuji so you have plenty of choice. for me it's panasonic, i have the g7 and g85.
The Sony A7SII or A7RII are arguably the best astrophotography cameras out there. I don't have the kind of money for those, so if it was me, and I focused on astrophotography, I would pick up an A7SI or A7RI. You can get a used A7S for around $1700CAD if you look around enough.
i DECIDED I DID NOT LIKE SAMSUNG CAMERAS AFTER I HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY SAMSUNG DIGIMAX A400 COMPACT CAMERA. THE ONLY SAMSUNG CONSUMER PRODUCTS I WOULD BUY ARE THEIR TELEVISIONS.
NX GN-120 NX1 16-55mm S lens 85mm 60mm 45mm 3D/2D 30mm 18-55mm ED II 50-200mm ED 18-200mm ED SEF-580 Flash plus 12mm T Rokinon wide angle lens I have them all. your client needs good photographs, and NX1 gives amazing results. photographers with Canon and Nikon envy me every time when they see me with NX1 and it's image quality. don't sell it.
no need to hurry. Dirk said he's happy with what he has. And indeed the NX1 was a top-of-the-line camera. If he can get good photos out of it now then all the power to him. I would keep everything and go out shooting. He already had at least one manual lens so he could fill the gaps using an adapter and some other brand of lens if he needs to.
It did happen a lot of times in photography. Well it did happen to me actually many years ago. Remember Canon FD cameras and lenses? It can happen anytime to any brand and if Dirk just switched from Samsung to that other brand then he's f*** a second time.
Matt, thanks for the detailed advice.

ds.techie prices have gone up. I am glad I didn't sell any of my stuff. I wish I bought another nx1 before prices went up

Just to clarify it's Panasonic GH5 (not G85) as he keeps saying in the vid.

i just can't afford one at the moment☹️
also i'm hearing about lots of lockups requireing the battery to be removed to sort.
I dont understand Samsung ! I have one Nx1 and that is amazing câmera,
.

sell while you can still get money. if something breaks, who's gonna fix it if samsung stops making parts?
Your choice of cap was a bad move.

Maybe Samsung could survive if they join M43?
I would be so pissed at Samsung. They were good cameras.
no need to hurry. Dirk said he's happy with what he has. And indeed the NX1 was a top-of-the-line camera. If he can get good photos out of it now then all the power to him. Luc Moreau Until the camera dies and you are left with all the lenses...that doesn't happen with the other manufacturers
It did happen a lot of times in photography. Well it did happen to me actually many years ago. Remember Canon FD cameras and lenses? It can happen anytime to any brand and if Dirk just switched from Samsung to that other brand then he's f*** a second time.
I think the name dirk is is a Dutch name and you need to say the i in dirk more like you say it in the word this!
