I bought the NX500 in 2019 and I bought the NX1 in 2021 and I’m sending this comment in 2024 and I still love these cameras.

Granted, it's an old video. Forward Jan 2017 and the NX1 has amazing video hacks. At this stage only the Sony A7s could give it a run for its money but not my much. The NX1 was and still is ahead of its time.

please can you do a review on the galaxy nx. what would you compare it to. most reviews focus on its connectivity and android capabilities but very few details the image quality and what the camera primarily should be used for. great review

Very good review. I have not seen moire or rolling shutter yet, but have only done a bit of video.
Also, the shutter is fairly quiet, much more so than any other cameras I have handled.

+john mccormick Hey John, thanks for watching! The NX1 is a great camera but for wildlife photography, I would absolutely be purchasing the Canon 7D Mark II. It is by far the best camera currently out for wildlife work. Nikon has a D500 going on sale shortly to offer competition but it is more expensive. Excellent review Dan, it´s pretty obvious you´re naturally excited about the camera.
About the video-AF, I noticed you didn´t mention the a6000, which may be a camera you haven´t tried, but which has a better, smoother AF in video mode than Canon´s dual-pixel AF. If this camera is as good as that (or better) it´s going to be a fantastic camera for those of us interested in this particular feature.

Right now I have not found an adapter with aperture control but I'm sure one will pop up soon. So yeah, the adapter will make your Canon lenses work ONLY at their max aperture with no control. The only way around this is to mount your Canon lens on a Canon camera, dial in the aperture you want, hold down the Depth of Field Preview button, turn off the camera while holding that button, and now the lens will be locked at the new aperture. By default, your lenses lock at max aperture but you can lock them at any aperture using that method.
Actually, just found this adapter with aperture control for Canon. Seems a bit high priced though for a manual adapter...even one with aperture control: amzn.to/1DGrwqh

Keep in mind it is manual only so you can't control the aperture even from the camera. This is not an issue if you use many of the video lenses with manual aperture rings but your standard Canon glass will only work at the max aperture of the lens. So my Canon 70-200 f2.8 will only work at f2.8 using this adapter. There is a way around this but it is complicated. I can't wait until there are either electronic adapters or adapters with aperture control built in to the adapter.

Do you still have your NX1? Who was this camera built for? I keep coming back to this camera and the Panasonic GX8 when looking for a smaller kit, but I can't find a place for it professionally.
+modernwize I ended up selling it but for one reason only. I love the camera but I still use Canon 5D3's for my wedding photography business and there were no great options for adapters to use Canon lenses with the NX1. That meant I had to have 2 complete sets of cameras & lenses for Canon & Samsung which was a pain and expensive so I ended up selling. Love the camera. It is the best camera if you want to shoot both photos and videos in a single camera and don't mind switching to Samsung lenses. If you are only interested in photos or only interested in video, I might go with another option though the NX1 is still a great option.
+Dan Watson I had the 5D3 as well. Easiest camera to use by far. You should try the Panasonic GX8. It has in-body and lens stabilization. With meta bones adaptor I can use all my lenses plus an extra stop of light with speedbooster. Btw some of your footage looks familiar. Are you in central florida? I used to live in Lake Mary.

Nice review! I have to agree with Alexander, there really is no need for a dedicated video mode. Most still photographers aren't using the M mode to begin with, so that is basically were anyone shooting video should be in, so M is the video mode. In fact, that was one of the first things I did was to remap the right click on the jog wheel, which is video standby, to something more useful.
I have NX500, bought it in 2019. This one - NX 1- could be the next one I will buy.
A good video and a camera to keep a eye out for.
Tested the NX1 at a Samsung retailer today. A very impressive high-end camera by Samsung. Super nice! If Samsung can add in-body image stabilisation and at least a 400mm lens (I'm into bird photography) for the successor of the NX1 in future, I would surely buy it.

I have an NX500 already and now, 2 years later, was looking for alternatives. I ended up buying the NX1 ... There's simply nothing better and more affordable right now, besides maybe the Fuji X-T2 (if you're more into stills than video). Going to full frame would give even better IQ, but that would be 1. much pricier and 2. much heavier (I'm a Pentaxian at heart and had a very close look at the K-1 as well).
Such a shame Samsung didn't have the guts to see this through.
did you have any auto focusing issues when using the lens adapter? i hear that using the metabones adapter on the A7 resulted in very slow auto focusing. does that hold true for the nx1 too? i really hope samsung will be in this game for a long time because it would appear that they are more responsive to their customer's needs
No autofocus at all when using the adapters. You do still get focus peaking though. As of now (and probably for at least a few months) there are no electronic adapters so everything is manual only...including changing the aperture. You either need an adapter with an aperture ring inside or a lens that has aperture control in it.
Well done Dan. I own the GH4 but was considering switching to the NX1 because of sensor size and Auto Focus during video recording. My dilemma with the GH4 is that I can't have image stabilization while using a speed-booster. But if I don't use the speedbooster, I can't get shallow DOF. How is the IS on Samsung's kit lens?
So, you could use the Canon speedbooster on the gh4 with something like the Canon 35mm f2 IS or Tamron 24-70 f2.8 vc. The Canon version of the metabones speedbooster allows for stabilization but you lose AF. The Samsung lens IS was good but not amazing. I still could see shaking in the video from my hands when zoomed in. When shooting wide, I could produce still video. Certainly better than not having IS but I have seen better. It was pretty quiet though
That's a great suggestion, but at $600 for the Canon speedbooster and $600 for the 35mm f/2, $1200 seems a lofty price to pay just for IS. If I had Canon glass already, I might have done it. Right now I'm getting the same thing (without IS) with the generic speedbooster and the Nikon 35mm 1.8 for less than $300. I then have the cheap 14-42mm Panasonic for when I need IS. That lens has AMAZING image stabilization. I just can't have both at the same time.

I purchased a SmallHD 501 external monitor for videography and have a Zacuto Z-finder EVF pro on hand. I cannot get the nx1 to output to either of these via its hdmi out; however, the hdmi out will display fine on my computer monitor and HDTV.
Do you have any experience with using an external field monitor with the nx1 for videography or any insight as to what it's compatible with I'm this field?
My SmallHD 501 will display virtually any output format known to man but no matter what I can't get it or the zacuto to display the nx1's hdmi out.

Hey, sorry but I have not tried using an external monitor with the NX1. When I needed one (like when flying on a gimbal) I just used my phone as the monitor with the built in wifi. There should definitely not be any issues using the 501 and the NX1so there has to be something going on. Sorry I wasn't more help to you on this one.
learningcameras thanks for your reply. I've been working with SmallHD, and they are getting a NX1 in-house to test and diagnose why the 501 isn't working with the camera and hopefully release a firmware update to make them work.
Their initial impression was the nx1 might be using a non-standard output frequency that a firmware patch will have to address. Something to be aware of if you're buying this camera with the intention of using an external monitor.
Will post updates here when SmallHD has a chance to test things so that others might benefit from what they say.

Transcoding using rocky mountain or the Samsung software. Both work but Rocky Mountain allows me to transcode to Prores as well as h.264 and is a bit faster.

It goes to f2.2 pretty quick. You get an extra 1/3 stop at 35mm and another 1/3 stop around 24mm.

Another great video. You mentioned the 70D a few times. What lens do you use for video?
Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC is the lens I use the most with my Canon cameras (70D and 5D3 are the ones I own). I also like the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 VC but since I have full frame cameras, I need lenses that work with both.

Nope, as of now there is nothing. In fact, no adapters right now will give you aperture control so you have to find an adapter with a built in aperture control (which is also tough to find). It will come but it is not here yet.
How much battery life do you get out of a fully charged battery from this camera during video shooting?
Jo Rich I've never done a battery run down but I use 2-3 when I film a 8-9 hr wedding though I'm not recording the entire time. Keep in mind the camera has USB power so you can power the camera that way (which also charges the battery) while recording or can attach a battery USB power bankfor additional time. I keep a 4000mAh power bank just in case but I have never used it. Battery life to me is better than the A7s but worse than the GH4. I am using AF and Stabilization though much of the time which does eat up more juice.
Great review mate. I almost bought one of these but didn't because I have canon lenses and can't use is or aperture control on them as no adapters aavailable. I got the gh4 and speedbooster instead. (I had to make an urgent decision as I'm shooting an adventure Himalayan project in a few days). I'm probably thinking though when more compatibility is available I may sell the gh4 and get the.nx1.

Yeah, I have Canon lenses too so the lenses only work at max aperture which is f2.8 on my zooms. Thankfully I'm usually shooting at 2.8 so it's not horrible and I usually use an ND filter with video to bring the light down. I have 1 manual cinema lens for Canon which does have aperture control on the lens and it worked well. You can lock in different apertures on Canon lenses by putting the lens on a Canon camera, setting the aperture, holding down the Depth of field preview button, and taking off the lens but this obviously doesn't work well for run & gun. But if you wanted to lock in a set aperture to the lens...say f4, you could do it that way.
Hopefully more support comes soon since it is turning into a popular camera. You won't regret the GH4...great camera with tons of options. The biggest reason I got the NX1 was because it had better auto focus and it is also an amazing still camera where the GH4 falls short. I almost bought the GH4 after I reviewed it with the A7s and ended up waiting because I wasn't sure I wanted to get locked in to M43 since it is a much smaller sensor than the FF & APS-C cameras I have been using. It's still awesome though...especially with the speedbooster.

does the latest firmware support 128gb sdxc card and above?
Technically no (or at least it doesn't specify) but I know people using 128GB cards in the NX1 with no issues. Personally, I only have 64GB cards right now so I'm not sure.

lboymusic Not as good as the 5D3 but it holds its own till about 3200ISO where the 5D3 is a clear winner. Very solid performance on the NX1 up to 1600 ISO and decent (still usable) images up to 6400 ISO and probably right in line with the Sony A6000. It's probably in the top 3 of all APS-C cropped sensor cameras and better than last generation full frame cameras like the 5D Mark II

A kind of NX2, but fullframe? The only thing, I think is lacking on Samsung is a better/bigger Bokeh... Obviously, if it had also the lowlight capabilities of the Sony A7s, than this "NX2" would be flawless :). Oh! I forgot, the LCD had to flip out, like the NX500.
lboymusic I doubt it because the lenses are not full frame lenses so they would need to introduce full frame glass. I think they are fine sticking with APS-C...just look at the success Panasonic has had with the GH4 and others which use and even smaller micro 4/3 sensor. I find APS-C a much better sensor size for video anyway than full frame and gives very shallow DOF for video. For stills, I still like full frame but with wide aperture lenses (f2.8 and wider which Samsung sells), they are just fine. Your bokeh or shallow depth of field will be the same on the NX1 and an f2.8 lens as an f4 lens on a full frame camera so you can still get very shallow DOF. If you go with the kit lens at f3.5-5.6, you will not see these kind of results though so definitely try to step up to f2.8 glass or wider.

+Genesis Diaz De Js In the US, the camera is $1499 but you can find it for $1299. It takes great images and would be an awesome choice for images of models. You might also look at the Nikon D750 if you can afford it but if you need to stay cheaper, the NX1 is perfect.

What Do you Mean when you say you can only Recored for 30 mi Do mean Memory Card Limitations or the Camera wont work after 30 mi because of Heat shut down ??? thanks
Cameras are taxed extra as video recorders only if they record more than 30 minutes. To not pay this, almost every camera stops recording at 30 minutes. At this point you have to hit record again. Have not had heat issues yet but I have not recorded straight for that long plus it's winter

So now that it is two months since you made this video did you end up buying the NX1? What do you think of the NX500 and its 4K crop factor (is it on par with the GH4 crop)? Also, what lens do you recommend for a first time buyer that can capture great video and pictures?
I did end up buying it about 3 weeks after I made this video. I sold my Canon 70D and got the NX1 with the 16-50mm f2-2.8 and a Canon adapter to use my Canon lenses if I need more reach or a prime. I'm a huge fan of the NX1 still and end up using the camera a ton...even more than my 5D Mark III's which I still own for wedding photography mostly. The NX500 is a bit limited compared to the NX1. Samsung did what most other manufactures did and artificially limited certain aspects to keep it from competing. As a result, the NX500 (especially on the video side) is no NX1, however, it still is the best camera for video under $800 without question. The biggest downside to the NX500 is that the kit lens isn't that great and the Samsung 16-50 f2-2.8 is very expensive. You might also look at the Panasonic LX100 if you don't plan on using interchangeable lenses. I don't mind the 4k crop factor that much but it is a pain to use because the camera has no dedicated movie mode and thus you can't see your framing for video until you manually enter 'video preview' mode and as soon as you stop recording, it bumps you back into photo mode which doesn't have the crop. Also, the crop means you are not using the full sensor so really you are 'using' a sensor that is smaller than a micro 4/3 on the GH4.

Flip Flinstone So the 500 does not offer headphone/mic jacks, 4k output via hdmi (1080p only), weird crop factor, no PRO quality bitrate, video picture profiles, no 24p in 4k, and no 1080p 120fps. There may be others but that is all I noticed. I use Rocky Mountain for converting h.265. It's fast, seems to be decent quality, and straight forward. Almost no effort was put into design though so it is very rough on the eyes. Hope that helps.

Hey, the NX30 is good but it was clearly just a stepping stone to the NX1 and Samsung is pushing a ton of resources to the NX1. Thus, I would definitely make the jump. There are other cameras you could look at for less if price is an issue but if you can afford it, the NX1 is definitely the camera to beat around $1500 if you need video. If photos matter more, I would go for something like the Nikon D7100 over the NX30. I have not used the NX30 but the specs are very good, especially for the price. I just like a camera with support around it which the NX30 never really had.

+DannySkateTV It definitely looks like it is discontinued which sucks because it really is an amazing camera. If you plan on just purchasing the kit and keeping it for several years (maybe as a personal camera), it wouldn't bother me much. But if you think you may eventually expand to purchase more lenses, gear, and possibly upgrade/buy a 2nd body in the next 2-3 years, I would probably pass in light of the discontinued reality.
+Dan Watson Hi Dan, I shoot primarily landscape photography and edit RAW in PS, and make short films using Premiere Pro as NLE. I have been looking at the NX1 for a few weeks now, and am tantalized by its 6.5k sensor to 4K to h.265 codec system workflow. Even though it is being discontinued, I would likely only need 2 or 3 lenses for all my shoots: 16-50mm f/2.0-2.8 for landscape work; Rokinon 12mm cine lens T/2.2 for wide-angle/Glidecam work or wider perspective in landscape work, and also another Rokinon 85mm cine lens T/1.4 for lowlight and/or bokeh effect with subjects. As far as accessories, I can get a ton of batteries for it right now for $15 apiece, so powering it up into the future shouldn't be an issue with the battery grip and charger in my possession. Is this a logical system to use for the next 3-5 years until the next great affordable camera comes along, or do you think I would be better served with the a6300 for my specific shooting needs, considering there are more lenses at my disposal and if the camera ever breaks down, I wouldn't be stuck with proprietary Samsung lenses? I don't do sport photography. Thoughts?
+wittsdream Hey. I definitely prefer the Samsung NX1 to the a6300 in many ways. The ergonomics and overall feel and operation of the NX1 are miles above what Sony offers. Straight quality is very similar though you do have a Log video option on the a6300 and the Sony will perform better above 1600 ISO for video. If you plan on keeping the camera for a couple years and don't plan on needing a 2nd body or don't mind mixing systems, I would still recommend the NX1...especially since you plan on using mostly 3rd party lenses (except for the 16-50 f2-2.8 which is a great Samsung lens). I think with your plans and the kit you are looking to purchase, you would be a prime candidate. If you plan on using multiple bodies, the NX1 could be an issue with it being possibly difficult to rent/purchase additional bodies and forcing you to 2 camera systems...that's my only worry. I really was hoping Samsung would stay in the game given how amazing the NX1 was but I see little evidence of it.

Yes, I mix a variety of footage in my video shoots, from cameras as varied as you can imagine: Canon 60D, GoPro2 and the Sony Z5U HDV camera (for which I still might get an Atomos recorder to maximize ProRes bitrate). My timeline video workflow is entirely 1080p 23.98 fps, and all of those cameras can accomplish those feats with different looks and functions. The Sony Z5U is still an excellent camera for Indie filmmaking (with its fast G lens and plethora of manual options), making it not quite obsolete yet if I can extract clean images via HDMI from its 1/3" CMOS sensor to 220 mbps. But, if I were to get the Samsung NX1 system, with the aforementioned 16-50 OIS lens and two cine lenses, I would sell off my 60D along with the 3 Canon lenses, but likely keep the Z5U because of its nice features and 29mm to 590mm optical zoom (with built-in ND filters, gain control, manual iris, zoom and focus, along with loads of cine/gamma settings and RGB/black level customization). Hard to find a Sony G lens even today with an f/1.6 aperture, which this camera has (and it only closes down to f/3.5 at 590mm!!). Anyway, thanks again for your valued input, and keep the Samsung NX firmware updates coming. You, along with a few other NX users, are tempting me to buy it, even with its reported discontinuance.
I really really want this camera, having owned the NX300 for the last 2 years using it as a street photography camera and knowing what that can do I'm eager to get a new pro camera and upgrade from my canon. I already have a lot if lenses on the NX300 which will instantly fit the NX1 which is good :)

+Imad Alhoraibi Tough call...I really loved the NX1, especially considering the price. I would say the A7RII is slightly better but each have their tradeoffs. The NX1 offered great image quality below 1600 ISO but suffered above that while the A7RII gets me to 3200ISO before it gets iffy. You also have way more lens options with the A7RII and the built in image stabilization is a great feature. On the NX1, h.265 was annoying but workable but the A7RII gives you files that can easily be edited as well as SLOG2 for even more dynamic range. Battery life on the NX1 is much better though, I love having the touch screen with video, and the body has slightly better weather sealing and ergonomics. I also love that Samsung had f2.8 zooms while Sony has none natively. Also 4k recording on the A7RII has overheating problems after 20-30min while I never had this on my NX1. Considering the NX1 is half the price, I would probably rather 2 NX1s over 1 A7RII but if money isn't a big deal, the A7RII gives you some options the NX1 simply does not have.

The camera is still great...you might lose a bit more on resale but the problem will be finding additional batteries, accessories, and additional bodies in the future...at least new ones. You will probably be able to find used gear. If you are spending $2000+ in lenses though, I'd probably invest in a system with a more secure future like Panasonic/Sony/Canon/Nikon

Ed Hecht I think so. I've had great results...especially in decent light. All mirroless cameras suffer more than DSLRs do in poor light with AF due to them using a different tech. The NX1 has been the only mirrorless that consistently follows fast moving subjects close to DSLR performance in my opinion.

+XenatR Yes, the AF system on the NX1 is definitely better than the Original A7. In fact, the NX1 is likely even better for AF than the new A7RII with tracking movement and the faster 15fps will give you more images to pick from. That said, dynamic range will be better on the A7 as will low light quality because of the full frame camera.

+David Kaplan The NX1 would offer better quality and more usable autofocus. The only problem is that it shoots in h.265 and most video editing software does not yet support it (but Adobe should later this year) so you have to transcode the video before you can edit it. Other than that, the NX1 would be better and Samsung makes some great lenses.

+sean noonan Yes, the sensor, lenses as well as compression will make a huge difference for video quality. The iphone footage is highly compressed compared to other cameras like the NX1 and the larger sensor will lead to better color, dynamic range, and low light results. Not to mention you have no control over video settings on the iphone or most other cell cameras (the LG V10 is probably the only exception).

Yes but none would be my ideal choice for that market. The NX1 is definitely more configurable than the GH4 for photography and has a faster frame rate and MUCH better autofocus tracking. For those reasons alone I would go with it. But for sports photography, the Canon 7D Mark II is a dream camera for the same price so I would go there first.

Andoni Villarreal OK, for video, the GH4 and NX1 would be great. There are some things I like better on each camera but if you are shooting photos at all, the NX1 is a huge improvement over the GH4 so I would go with the NX1. For video only, I would be leaning slightly to the GH4

I would say the gh4 edges out the NX1 for video except in auto focus and that the larger sensor of the NX1 means a bit shallower DOF and better results with higher ISO. However, with the GH4 you can combat that with a Speed Booster adapter and more lens options. When it comes to stills though, the NX1 blows the GH4 out of the water in every area so if you only need it for video, it is a toss up between lens options on the GH4 and better AF of the NX1. There are plenty of other differences but those are the biggest probably for me. I ended up with the NX1 because I love having a camera that I can use for both stills and video.

I never understood why a lot of camera brands make it so that you can’t charge the battery inside the camera and use the camera at the same time. I never understood why some camera brands make it so that you have to completely remove the battery and put it in a separate charging dock and just don’t have the ability to charge the battery inside the camera at all. Samsung has the ability to charge the battery inside the camera and you can still use the camera while you’re doing so. I really just never understood why other brands do that when tone comes out with a bunch of cameras that can charge the battery inside the camera and all allows you to continue using the camera at the same time. This is one of the major reasons why I chose to start investing into Samsung. They had not made cameras since 2014. I just think that my Samsung camera still to this day have some of the best image quality available. I know that the Canon 90D has a 32mp count but I don’t have that camera and I do have multiple Samsung cameras NX1 and NX500 and NX30 which are all pretty amazing.
Such an amazing camera. Shame that Samsung stopped making mirrorless cameras after this GH4 killer. I'm pretty sure that even GH5 won't hold a candle to NX1. A7SII is a different story, but it's much more expensive.

However, there is a new computer application for the NX1 (not sure if it is out yet) that was announced a couple weeks ago that should let you stream to the computer. From there, you could have a separate program broadcasting live a screencast of the broadcast from the camera. Not sure what the quality would be but that would theoretically be possible.

finally this review, the only thing I don't get, is the Camera Store said that it is the best apsc sensor out there, that the image quality is on par with some full frame sensors, and in your review, you seem to say that it is equal to the best apsc sensors, but equal and better are two different things, and 28mp or 20mp are two different things, so i'm just wondering why the differences of opinion, i know you posted raw files, but I really wanted to hear more about the image quality in this review, compared to the best apsc cameras like the D7100, 7Dll or XT1, I feel like you made it pretty clear about the focusing of the camera, even though I would of like to of seen some examples of the camera hunting in low light, so I know more clearly what lighting situations will make it hunt, how low does the light have to be to start giving it problems, is it a little problem or a big problem, and I also wanted to hear more about the f2 to f2.8 lens, this NX1 is maybe the coolest camera to come out in the last year, atleast on paper, and I really wanted a great review on it, and even though your review was pretty good, it left me wanting to hear more
I reviewed both the D7100 and 7DII (not the XT1) so I have files and experience with both of those cameras though I don't have them to do direct comparisons. The Nikon D7100 I feel had a bit more room in the shadows and lower shadow noise at higher ISO like 800-1600. Again, I'm not doing direct comparisons but this is my observations after looking at the images I have from both. The NX1 had better low light performance at some ISO and higher at others than the D7100 as well. However, the NX1 also has more pixels so this is why I said it runs with the top cameras but doesn't blow them out of the water. The 7D2 has more noise at lower ISO though it keeps noise very controlled at 6400...probably even better than the NX1 (but again, it has fewer pixels). However, the 7D2 looks ugly if you raise the shadows and definitely has more noise in the shadows and blacks at lower ISO below 800. I might do a direct comparison with my 70D and maybe even my 5D3 to better examine where the NX1 falls but so far to me, even with a higher resolution sensor, the NX1 beat other APS-C cameras 80% of the time and was a close second place 20% of the time as a general observation.
The NX1 hunts a bit more in low low light but it still achieved focus so wasn't really a huge deal for me. I'd say when I was shooting at ISO 6400 was when it slowed down but general low light shooting was still good. The f2-2.8 lens is amazing. It is ridiculous how sharp that lens is...the lens itself is almost a reason to buy the NX1. I would have been fine with them removing the 'I-function' control from the lens to save some $ (never used it) but the lens is amazing. The only thing that bugged me is manual focus with it because it is electronically controlled but with the AF being as good as it was (even for video) and tended to shoot AF 100% of the time for pictures and 90% of the time for video.
I'll probably have some more videos on the way but the review was already at 19minutes so I was scared to put in more. But stay tuned and you will see more focused videos shortly from me and likely plenty of others.

photographerjonathan You bet, and with the new firmware, you can control the speed of the pull with 3 settings to make it smooth. It's nice to have AF you can actually use.
I don't understand the problem of not having a video mode on the mode dial. For me it feels most logical and usable to just set the exposure and start recording, or take pictures. So the way they have done it is exactly the way I like it. And that you get to see it in slow motion in-camera is great. For post processing it doesn't really matter as interpreting footage at different frame rates is not a problem, so either way would be pretty much the same there.
The reason for the 30 minute recording is due to things outside camera manufacturers control: www.tested.com/tech/photography/44445-why-digital-cameras-have-a-30-minute-video-recording-limit/ But if you record with an external recorder (which will be improved in the 1.2 update, you don't have a limit).
On the lens selection issue, I will be using a lot of K-mount lenses on it, lenses I have, and if I buy something not Samsung, it will be for K-mount to use with an adapter.
Now if February 2nd could come a little quicker :P (that's when I get my NX1).
Awesome points. Sometimes (usually when using the camera for personal use) I'm hopping between photos and videos shooting manual so my Photos are usually shot at 1/125+ shutter while my video is shot at 1/30-50 so I'm having to change this around. I found a solution by shooting photos in aperture priority and video in manual when I'm going to be hopping around but I understand that not everyone will be shooting photos and video interchangeably.
I understand why the 30 min recording limit is there but Panasonic apparently figured it out for the GH4 and I'm wishing Samsung did the same given how much push there was for video features on the NX1
Enjoy the NX1! It's one of my favorite cameras and it is so well rounded and versatile, nothing else competes.
I sold my X-T1 to get the money for the NX1. The X-T1 was already great and awesome to use, but the video part wasn't very good, manual etc, with details, but the image quality otherwise was bad, specially in 50/60FPS. And peaking went off when video recording started. I believe the NX1 will be great in use :)

pedro wilde I did, it's better in the sense that you get manual settings, but the image quality is not difference from what I saw. It can be used, but it you want to do a lot of video, it's not really the way to go, unfortunately. They might come with a firmware update to fix it though, I have no idea. For photography however, it's an amazing camera, a bliss to use.
Dan-awesome review! Followed the link and learned a great deal about focus peaking. Thanks! Like you I also own Canon 70D. After the 1.2 update I thought this would be the perfect camera for me. Unfortunately there is a capability the 70D has that the NX1 doesn't that is important to me.
Set both cameras up on a tripod with someone in the foreground and someone in the background and then touch the foreground face and then the background face. Repeat that 3-4 times while shooting 1080 30p. Watch the results and you will understand how a pro could sell the video from the 70D but not even be interested in showing the video from the NX1. For me touch to focus is killer app for video right now. After a year using the 70D I happily sold all my follow focus rigs.
I am looking to purchase either a Samsung NX1 with a 16-50mm f2-2.8 lens or a Panasonic Lumix GH4 with a 12-35mm f2.8 lens. Whichever camera I get, I am mainly going to use it for video. I film music videos to my original acoustic guitar instrumentals with beautiful scenery in the background (so mainly landscape shooting). I do not have a lot of experience with cameras and so ease of use will be important to me. I plan to have most of my shots stationary on my manfrotto tripod. In my music videos, I may add some timelapse footage and some panning. If I am able to afford it, I may also invest in a glidecam to get some more dynamic shots in my music videos. Since most of the video be featuring my guitar playing and I won't have anyone else to film me doing this, that doesn't leave a lot of room for dynamic shots. Hence, most the footage will be shot stationary at different angles. From what I have seen, I think the Samsung NX1 might be a better option since the colour that comes straight out of the camera looks a bit more appealing to me (and I have a lot to learn about colour grading) and the footage looks more detailed. Auto-focus is also important since I can't operate the camera at the same time while playing the guitar. I know the NX1 is known to have fast and smooth auto-focus. I know the dynamic range is better for the GH4 which is something that is important to me as well. My first purchase was a Sony FDR AX100 and I am looking to sell it and purchase one of these two cameras. I had some issues with this camera, including overexposure/blown out skies even when there was overcast. Since I film my music videos during my travels, my shooting is largely run and gun so I don't have as much time as I would like to make sure that my settings are optimized. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at my last music video filmed in Norway with my FDR AX100 to give you an idea of the kind of shooting I will be doing either of these cameras: ua-cam.com/video/1vqLQ27R2O8/v-deo.html. I no longer have a slider, nor do I think I need one (so rolling shutter shouldn't be a problem). Most of the shots will be like what you see at 4:50 in the video. The problem with the NX1 is that it looks like Samsung is getting out of the camera market which means it is going to be tough to find accessories for the camera and resale could be tough. If you were buying just 1 camera and not planning on upgrading, I would say get it. But for what you are doing I thing the GH4 would be a better option. The dynamic range on the Samsung is technically better but if you use the Log profile of the GH4, you can get more of the dynamic range back so it works out. I actually would say I prefer the GH4 slightly as JUST a video camera but I way prefer the NX1 when factoring in photograph quality. For you, I would lean to the GH4 and you will be hard pressed to find anything better for the money.
Thanks for the great advice! The fact that the screen can rotate on the GH4 is a big plus for what I need. If you know of any cameras that are coming out that may be better for my purposes that shoot 4k I can hold off until they come out. I currently have a Sony FDR AX100 and wonder if the upgrade to a GH4 would be worth it. It looks brand new without any issues so I am sure I will get a good chunk of my money back. I was more impressed with the footage/versatility of the GH4. Also, if I choose this camera, would the 12-35mm f2.8 lens be the best option? Has auto-focus and seems to be a great lens overall. I know getting a metabones + sigma lens is supposed to yield great footage but that leaves me without auto-focus which might be a challenge since I am filming myself. Well shoot this may be the final nail on my decision on a new camera. I want a new camera as I'm planning a huge trip (3-4 months long) into South America later this year but since the trip will be done on a motorcycle I need a camera that is weather-sealed and size does matter. I've narrowed my choice to the NX-1 $2700 kit or a Olympus OM D EM-1 with the nice Pro lens. As far as I can tell the Olympus only wins out on size and cost with cost not being a huge factor here within reason. I didn't like the dial layout of the Fujifilm X-T1 and the GH4 is not weather sealed so it is out.
It really comes down to size for me, is the NX-1 and S lens small enough to be toted around on a long trip vs the OM D. I actually try to focus on the camera when it is shown in hand to get some idea of size. The good reviews of the NX1 make it hard to resist pulling the trigger on it.

That sounds like a cool trip. Yeah, I would not have thought so before but the NX1 might be a nice camera for that. The only limitation as of now will be that the videos you take will have to be transcoded before you can watch them (or you can hook the camera to a TV and play them through the camera). The fact that you can charge it with a USB battery bank will make this awesome if you don't have access to power. To me the GH4 is a great video camera but the NX1 beats it handily when it comes to stills so if you want stills and video, I'm really struggling to find a better camera than the NX1

+Alex Pana Samsung's 50-150mm f2.8S OIS lens is the 70-200 equivalent since this is a crop sensor camera. Those 'S' lenses from Samsung are actually very good quality and I would certainly put them up with some of the best from Canon/Nikon. They are weather resistant as well...the 'S' lenses from Samsung is basically Canon's 'L' line. The problem is more that Samsung has nothing over 200mm that's great and some of their wide angle lenses could use improvement. Also they only have 2 great prime lenses which is well short of Canon/Nikon but probably enough for most people.

$1500 is the body only. It's $1,699 with the normal kit lens or $2799 if you want the major kit with weather sealed 16-50mm f2-2.8 lenses (the lens retails for $1250 alone), battery grip, extra battery, and stand alone charger. The camera should also come with Adobe Lightroom 5 which is over $100.

I really wish Samsung didn't dropped the NX line, it's all I wanted in a mirrorless camera. I have Sony A7ii and although the image IQ is great and Raw files hold a lot in them, I just don't enjoy taking photos with the camera, the grainy Evf, horrible ergonomics... Samsung could have been the clear leader in the mirrorless market.

If they were still doing cameras, it would have had 120fps 4k and 480fps 1080p cine log, 20fps 200 shots, I.S./I.B.S./Software Stabilization, 10bit, hdr video, Uber fast autofocus. NX2, GALAXY NX2 (Android 7.1), NX50, etc.
I bet NX2 will have 4K 120P and Instagram installed in the menu.

the NX1 is not a hybrid camera, it is a mirrorless camera. hybrid cameras fill the gap between point-and-shoot and DSLR. a mirrorless camera is essentially a DSLR without the mirror and optical view finder.

You are limited in low light when shooting video. This camera will not give you clean video in low light. That is one of the biggest problem, in addition to the codec. Otherwise it's a great camera.
+Molten Pros It's pretty clean up to 1600 ISO. Other than full frame cameras costing more than 2x this price, is there another camera that gives you clean video in this type of price range and quality? I actually think the NX1 at 3200ISO shot in 4k, downsampled to 1080p with noise reduction looks better than my 5D3 video. There is so much detail in the NX1 4k video files that even with noise reduction it looks less muddy than the 5D3.

Looks like a great all-rounder, but the video is terribly jerky as you pan. My EOS M pans smoothly at the speed you were panning; the NX1 kept stuttering like a mobile phone.

+joewilde Ok, maybe. I've seen plenty of other videos on UA-cam which don't stutter. One cause of this can be shooting at higher frame rates. 60fps used as standard speed (not for slow motion) seems to cause stuttering. 24/25/30fps are much smoother.
+cooloox The stuttering is something I noticed as well. I was shooting 24p so you will have some of that. I think the rest is due to the rolling shutter and time it takes to read the full 28MP sensor.
+Dan Watson Thanks for the explanation, Dan. I'm new to dabbling with video and I'd previously read that 24p prevents stuttering due to a slight motion blur. Higher frame rates and hence selected higher shutter speeds cause the stuttering. This was in relation to moving objects such as cars, rather than panning. Now you're saying the opposite, and I know you know your stuff, I'd better do some experimenting. I've been using 25p and 50fps exclusively and for some strange reason I've had no stuttering. I especially see it in online videos of cars going by. Every certain set interval they stutter slightly and I never get that on my camera. Mobile phones are notorious for it.
+cooloox You will see stuttering at higher shutter speeds but it is different to this. I use variable ND filters to keep my shutter speeds between 1-2x whatever my frame rate is. So if I'm shooting 24P, I am typically slower than 1/50th of a second to keep the motion blur. This effect is different...it's as if the image is not refreshing fast enough which is different to what you see when you shoot at high shutter speeds. Shooting at higher frame rates (30p, 50p, or 60p) will get you smoother looking video (though not as cinematic looking) but again, you still need to keep your shutter speeds at 1-2x the frame rate. Higher frame rates don't cause stuttering by themselves...using higher shutter speeds than you should use will cause stuttering...but again, it looks different. Sometimes movies will intentionally use higher shutter speeds to get this look...especially during fight scenes or chases.

Canon/Nikon charge $2000 for their 24-70 f2.8 lens with no stabilization and $900 for the 17-55mm f2.8 for APS-C cameras which honestly is not great quality and has cheap build quality. Samsung also gives you a wider aperture when zoomed out and full weather sealing so technically you get more. But I agree that the lens is a bit expensive. Unfortunately right now you don't have 3rd party lenses for Samsung where Canon/Nikon/Sony all have options from Sigma & Tamron at lower prices. This also helps drive down cost. They still don't have a huge lens selection but most of the must have lenses are there and the 'S' lenses are amazing 'pro' level quality. The biggest weakness is that there is nothing over 150mm so sports photographers and wildlife might want to wait but they have basically all the focal lengths I own for my Canon system. If you only need a camera for photos or don't prioritize video, you might go with the D7100 or 7D2 which are cheaper but there is no camera at any price that does video better for less money and definitely nothing that rivals the NX1 as a hybrid camera for those who value photos/video equally. There should be a cheaper NX500 camera from Samsung in the next few weeks that will offer similar specs to the NX1 in a more consumer body at a cheaper price but the Canon 70D.

Sorry but it's you who are new to the market segment. Samsung has been making cameras before you were old enough to buy one. Most of there lens line was manufactured when they partnered with Schneider (the famous lense Manufacturer). They were Making cameras in the film days. Just because you are new to this segment and only know 2 manufacturers of cameras to exists only shows how new you are to this segment. At least try to do your home work. For example, the NX-1 has 153 cross type focusing points. Try doing an honest review! You can do it. Say 153. Or are you so afraid of pissing off Canon that you can't suggest that something out performs or out specs it's 7Dm2 which only boasts 53.

haha, I'm really trying to take your comment seriously but I'm not sure you attached it to the right review. My conclusion was that this was the best hybrid camera around and the best focusing mirrorless camera ever and that it even tracked better than most DSLRs. I didn't say anything about 153 focus points nor did I compare it to the 7Dm2 which I did review last month (which has 65 focus points btw). The only thing I mentioned is that my Pro DSLRs focus faster in low light which they do thanks to a mirror though the difference is narrowing. I'll also update you on the last 24 hours where I sold half of my Canon gear and purchased the NX1 kit for almost $3000 even after shooting with the 7D2 most of the last 2 months (ended up not buying the 7D2). Either you missed the conclusion or you commented on the wrong review. I'm still hanging on to my 5D3 because I need it for wedding photography but the NX1 is one of my favorite all around still/video cameras....good enough for me to blow 3 grand on Samsung gear. Unfortunately Canon doesn't pay me anything so I'm happy to jump ship when another camera blows me away since I have to buy my gear just like everyone else and my reviews should reflect that. I have shot (and reviewed so feel free to check them out) Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji...and now Samsung cameras so I think you are talking about another review...or you just have it really wrong.

Ernst Jan Dekker Are you talking about photos or video. For photos, It is right up there with the best APS-C cameras around. For video, it definitely is topping the charts. The only limitation seems to be that some other cameras offer RAW video, Log, or super flat profiles to pull more DR. The issue is that you need to spend time in color correction with those. You shoot the GH4 in the regular (not Cine) profile and I guarantee the NX1 has more DR.

Ernst Jan Dekker Yeah, rolling shutter is a bit of an issue. It's also an issue with the A7s though and others...just something you have to deal with. Just make sure to do slow steady pans and you will barely notice it.

I am still in love with this camera because of the fact it checks all the boxes that a Canon or Nikon may not!
But like it or not!
It froze to death and Samsung graciously fixed it in less than 4 days turn around which actually amazed me! I don't know what they did to fix it but I suspect changing the whole motherboard if there's such a thing in a camera!
By the way I never owned a Canon or Nikon and I love this NX1 for what it is or what it is not if you will :)
All I can say I suspect this is not an individual mishap and I have no doubt it happened to other people too and I have no idea what lead to this debacle !!

you talk like a 12yr girl, a daughter of a rich daddy. you start with saying its the worst camera ever, than you say you never had any other makes and than you say this is the best camera (better than nikon and cannon) and you love it... and you generalize based on your individual case. after samsung fixed your issue in a record 4 days, while nikon customers (who paid 4k for their camera) usually must wait long long weeks if not months for repairs! you do not know anything while you do have the very best, finest aps-c camera on this planet.
