  • My Logan Lathe came with only a portion of the taper attachment.
    It was missing a key part. In this 2 part video, I design, make a pattern (and casting), and machine a dovetail. The result---a usable taper attachment. Leave a comment---if you like.

    Perfect timing on starting a Logan series! I've relied upon you to teach me how to use my Atlas lathes, and it just so happens that I just bought a Logan. Really looking forward to the series. Thanks for sharing!

    Really great project Mr. Pete. Thanks for sharing it with us. That casting came out BeaUtYful...didn't see any inclusions at all. All men have their vises, some good, some not so good...I raised my hand for the B&S! Looking forward to the dovetail measure and cutting! ~PJ

    Another GREAT video mrpete I about fell out of my chair when I seen you changed the head on the mill cuz I know how many times you said you hate with a passion to tram the head- but it worked! Two thumbs up

    A Great start to a great video. Although dovetails are a good idea, I don't believe they are absolutely necessary. An easy way to make the gib, without tilting your milling head is to place a sacrificial piece of material, steel or whatever you have to the bed. make a cut Along one edge. Place your gib material In the groove you just made, and clamp it down, the wide side parallel with the table. now using a dovetail cutter, Cut along the edge of the material. Flip it over and make the second cut. Make sure the sharp edge of the material is down toward the table when you flip it. this is the way I have to do it, because the head on my Mill drill does not tilt.
    Looking forward to your next installment. I always enjoy your videos. thank you.

    Woodworking, casting, machining, now if there is any welding and grinding you'll have it all in one project. Ha ha,. Then there's the angle milling. This is a great little series for showing how to make the part from A to Z. Can't wait for the second part.
    My angle vise is also a cheapie but it is a different style and is more ridged and a little more accurate. For the little projects I do, so far I haven't had to tile the head. My angle vise cost ~$40.00. It makes a very odd companion to my Kurt.

    Another excellent video, sir. Thank you for making them. Regarding your mistake, I think it's a good thing for students and "newbies" to see someone as experienced and skilled as yourself make a (rare) minor mistake. I remember as a high school student taking shop classes, it was quite intimidating and frustrating that each of us made mistakes and yet the teacher never seemed to and it gave us the feeling we would never be good enough. By the end of the year, though almost all of us passed the class, we still made the occasional minor error, but then one year (or often just one semester) is not an apprenticeship and nowhere near enough to master all aspects of the trade, but we would not have felt such hopelessness if we had seen the teacher make just one little mistake during the course of the year, just to show that he is human, too.

    There's only been one perfect man, who made no mistakes, and he was a carpenter. Another great video. I have got to lean how to cast parts like that. Could you again show the recipe, I think it was your fathers, for casting sand?

  • @bentontool

    Interestingly enough, this is exactly how I received my Sheldon 12 x 36" lathe... missing only the exact same part of the taper attachment as yours! I have to wonder why... taken off and stuck in a drawer somewhere, soon to be forever separated. I have given much thought over the years as to what I was going to do with mine... I poured over multiple old Sheldon lathe pics, but was unable to see the exact part that was missing from mine. I was told not to use steel to fabricate the missing part... only use cast iron because it will not flex under load... what do you think? I do not have a piece of cast that large. I am now watching your video with extreme interest! Thanks again... you always hit the nail on the head somehow.

    I have one of those tilting import vises too. Like a lot of Chinese stuff, you can't assume much of anything about it. I spent a Saturday and "fixed" the vise so that you could actually do some reasonably decent hobby work with it.

    I'm curious why you needed to extend the dovetail into the extension piece that you cast? Wouldn't the Cross-slide provide the necessary rigidity needed?

  • @rbalderson5568
    @rbalderson5568 6 років тому

    Just a thought, but I would have simply bolted the connector rigidly to the cross slide and removed the lead screw, for taper turning. What yave I missed?

  • @waynep9592
    @waynep9592 6 років тому +3

    No need for the dovetails in the extension piece. I have the extended cross slide pictured in that old Monty Ward cat. I believe they made a short attachment version too, bolt-on, like you’re creating. The only portion that has dovetails and gib is on the 6 inch or so where the compound sits, the rest is open and similar in clearance to the chip guard you removed.

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 6 років тому

      +Wayne. I wrote and told Lyle that I thought a good fit on the ally part was not needed as a lot of other taper attachments just have a bolt on part to pull / push the cross slide. He has replied it is needed for rigidity purposes. I would not have thought so as the rear guide bar is so thin compared to other makes.

    • @MrUbiquitousTech
      @MrUbiquitousTech 6 років тому +1

      The original piece was one casting, but Mr. Pete's piece is an extension on the factory cross-slide that's going to rely on two small bolts to connect the two. I think the rigidity and support the extra dove tail provides will greatly reduce the stress on the two small bolts. Also help keep the two pieces aligned with each other.

  • @daveticehurst4191
    @daveticehurst4191 6 років тому +2

    Lyle, surely the ally part did not need a close fitting dovetail or gib strip. It will serve no use, it just needed to be clearance on the lathe saddle dovetail. The accuracy will be in the original cross slide, or am I missing something here ? Other make taper turning attachments just have a part that bolts onto the cross slide and does not use the original dovetail at all. I eagerly await your thoughts on this.

    fair weather foundry? Always felt that cold winter evenings were the nicest for doing foundry work. Granted, working cold sand wasn't so nice, but working around a hot furnace while wearing gloves, apron, face shield isn't very nice in hot weather either.

    Mister Pete, my Logan Model 200 came with the cross slide extension, but the taper attachment was long gone. I'd give it to you if you wanted it, or maybe one of your viewers might want it. I've taken up the space with a digital scale.

      It's under 12" long, so it would fit in a medium Priority Mail box. Shouldn't be more than $15 or so. How do we take this offline? I don't think UA-cam has a way to send private messages, and I'm wary of sending contact info in the clear.
