Logan metal lathes are great machines, but are much less known compared to other "old-school" USA-made lathes such as "South Bend" machines. In this video I give a walkthrough of my 1955-built Logan model 1922 metal lathe.

Picked up a 1954 11 x 36 Logan a month ago,, love it,,, have 6 atlas lathes I've restored to resell,, there no near the lathe that Logan is,, even a step above Southbend so much quieter then bend,, Logan has parts but you have to be ready to pay up for them for sure..

I started as a turner in 1964 my first machine was a ward7, I left the company after a year and went to another where again I was turning, I have used all the parts you have shown. I moved from the lathe line to the maintainence department where we serviced and repaired all types of machines, I have also seen my fair share of accidents. Safety became a big thing no loose clothing including neck ties( you don’t see them in the machine shop now) no watches or rings. I still like what you have shown. Good stuff.

Hi Gavin. Thanks for the video...I own a Logan lathe myself - lovely machine!
You mentioned that it cannot turn metric thread but I have turned many metric threads successfully with my logan. All I did was dividing 25.4 (1inch) by the pitch size in metric for example 1.5mm. That will give me for this example 16.9333. Then select the threads per inch on the lathe that is closest to this number. In the end it will be out by a fraction of a millimetre over an inch. I've found this works brilliantly and enables me to turn both metric and imperial threads successfully.. Cheers!

Great video, thanks for posting. Nicely done, you have some nice additions to the lathe. Really liked the idea of milling the top of the tail stock with a flat. The model 922 is the earlier version of the 1922 you have is very similar and is currently in "restoration" process in my g-rage. This is a great sturdy well made lathe for home or even light commercial duty. The beds are not hardened (usually) so if looking at a used one put a dial on the tail stock and measure the ways the carriage rides on for wear by sliding it along the bed. The tail stock ways are not usually worn.
As a little tip, when parting off, if a center hole is available, use a small dowel, drill rod, or similar, to support the part from inside the bore when parting, Bare skin is asking for it.

Logans are great old lathes. I have a 1946 Model 200 (10x24) that I picked up from a retired machinist almost two years ago. Currently have it set up with an electronic leadscrew of my own design, with a touch screen interface, controlled by an Arduino Mega. Makes all types of threads trivial, and it's really nice to be able to change the feed rate on the fly.

I did a short video before I installed it on the lathe, at ua-cam.com/video/fLjJsTR2b5o/v-deo.html. I hope to do one with everything installed and running soon. It has been an interesting, and fun, project so far. Not having a gearbox actually makes it much easier.

One thing that frustrates me is reading the forums and which lathe is best or which mill is the this. That drives me nuts. What people do not take into concideration is that they are valueable if they learn to maximise themselves with what they have access to. You do not mention this at all, but your actions and you demonstration of where and why your tooling is where it is is a clear indication that you have become proficient with what you have. Nice video. I know you are on the hobby level with this machine, but you do in fact maximise it very well.

I have a Logan model 917 11x36 sold new June 1949. I have the receipt that was sent from Logan. I’m not a machinist just a 70 year old mechanic and I love playing with this machine. I’m trying to make some parts for my Craftsman 12x36 I think the vintage is about 1967. And my next project will be to restore a 16x30 Bradford lathe about 1924 vintage.

@@electroniccheeks US Navy ships were fitted with American Tool Works "High Duty" lathes. Obviously, like Logans, American made. When comparing older American made lathes to much newer production lathes, do not make the mistake of thinking that maximum swing diameter which more recently produced lathes use to identify their products is the same. I'm restoring an ATW "High Duty" which they called a 14" lathe and has that cast into the headstock which can actually swing about 16". They delivered more than promised. But it weighs almost 3X as much as my similarly nominally size rated Taiwan lathe. For most maintenance parts, learn how to make your own replacement parts on your own lathe or a friend's lathe. If it's not quite right on your first try, you benefited from that learning experience so your next attempt is more likely to be satisfactory. Many, perhaps most US ships at high sea had replacement parts made in their tool rooms on these American made lathes. The most limiting factor is the machine operator's mental flexibility rather than any limit of the lathe they operate.

Great video thanks for sharing. Beautiful machine, I also have a Logan a 1942 model Logan 820, unfortunately it doesn’t have the collets and is probably a little small for gunsmithing, but it does what I need. I’m a Bladesmith / knifemaker and a shooter / reloader. Have long wanted to do some gunsmithing - it’s not easy to study or qualify here in South Africa unfortunately. I would love to get new machines like your Precision Matthews lathe / mill but those sort of machines are prohibitively expensive here is South Africa. Even the Dillon reloading gear is scary expensive here. Thanks again. Enjoy your video channel

I've been cleaning it up and replacing some damaged gears but I really haven't attempted to use it yet because of my lack of knowledge. Short of going to a trade school are there any videos out here that will teach me the basics? What I haven't figured out yet is how and when to use the back gears and bull gear with retainer. Any suggestions would be awesome. BTW - great video I will save if for future reference. Thank you.

I was just thinking the same thing! I really don’t see the advantage to spending $10k on a lathe thats going to give you .0005 over what you already have. Especially when you have “The real gunsmith” not even indicating in a barrel just turning it concentrically in a precision chuck and a steady rest, then chambering it. Not even using a floating ream holder. Am i missing something? Don’t get me wrong Gavin i love your work and your channel! Absolutely awesome content thank you! Can you please explain what makes that more precise than the Logan?

Hi Gavin...excellent video.. I have a 1920 Logan..love it so far.... I also have the collet closer but am unsure what parts i'm missing to make it all work. Can you send me your email so i can send you pics of what i have and then maybe you can tell what i need to make it complete. Thanks again Gavin
