Even after all these years, I can find something completely new to appreciate about this song every time I listen to it. The hypnotic drums at the bottom and right of the mix, the kind of ghostly quitar interjections during the second part of the first verse, and the fact that most of the instruments were *sampled*?! By far one of the best compositions of the 21st century. It's actually scary how genius it is.
there's probably a specific name for the term that i don't know, but it's incredible because it creates textural variance in the song: that is, the number of instruments (in which vocals are also included as an instrument) playing at once changes drastically in a short time to emphasise a change in the song's structure - transitioning from verse to chorus. specifically in this case, it goes from playing 4 instruments (2 guitar lines, the percussion, and the vocals) down to just 2 (guitar and vocals, but the vocals fade quickly to leave just the guitar), before jumping sharply up to having at least 5 or 6 instruments that i can count this sort of technique is used often in music, especially going from a mid-to-low-to-high number of instruments because it's very 'ear-catching'. the sudden difference of texture (and often volume too) creates a lot of contrast that's very catchy and attention-grabbing, and cutting out some instruments only to bring them all back and more a moment later is particularly effective (like if all the verse instruments just continued right into the chorus it wouldn't be as memorable, since you'd have 4 instruments going into 6, whereas by cutting them out for just a moment, you get 4 instruments going to 1 and then to 6, which is a much more significant difference)
