  • The original Roosevelt Stadium was built in 1936 and is located in Union City, New Jersey, and built on the site of the old Hudson County Consumers Brewing Company. The WPA art-deco style stadium included piercing vertical rays, winged figurines, and diamond flourishes
It was the home to the annual Turkey Bowl game between rivals Emerson High School and Union Hill High School. The Thanksgiving game began in 1919 and ended in 2007 with both schools tied with an astonishing record of 40-40-9.
It was also home to baseball and other events during its time, but I never knew about the stadium until a chance visit in 2002. I was able to get inside for a look around the historic venue and was amazed at how it stood underneath my nose for so many years. It was old and dusty, but had some good bones and could have easily served as a minor league baseball venue at one time. Enjoy!

Thanks for taking a look at it. I found it this clip from my visit from 20 years ago on an old VHS tape. I couldn’t believe that I still had it definitely had a post of online. My only regret is that I never saw football game, but they sure have been a lot of memories.

Back in the 40's and 50's,the Emerson-Union Hill Turkey Day Football game used to draw 12,000 people.

Great point. I'm from Emerson '65 and that was the biggest game of the season regardless of teams records. I also remember playing the outfield in Roosevelt Stadium. IF a ball got by in center field, it was almost always an inside the park HR. I believe it was only about 210 feet down the right field line too. This video brought back some great memories. I forgot too it was named "Pep Novotny Field" after the long time Emerson football coach. Crazy that Emerson/Union Hill each won exactly 40 Thanksgiving games each in the rivalry. .

I’m proud to be a part of Emerson’s class of 98. Nice to see the old stadium. Other artists and I painted that mural on the stadium wall in honor of Frank Winters & Pep Novotny # 61 & 21. Wonder if it’s still part of the Union City HS.

It must have been amazing to play a game here. I recorded myself in 2002 and then found the video 20-years-later. It is amazing how this was filmed and destined to be on UA-cam -- three years before it was invented. I wish I would have walked through the seats! Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the comment. This had been sitting on a VHS tape for 20 years before I decided to make a video for YT. I wish I had gone to a game. Did you attend the school?

Thank you very much for these beautiful memories!
My high school years were 1954 to 1957, this older view Would have shown that there was little fencing in between the people sitting in the stands of 6-8000, was and is the players field!
The excitement was, and is the same!
grass, the biggest worry was that the fans wouldn’t pull up the goalposts after the games

That's for commenting. I wish I knew about Roosevelt Stadium growing up in Colonia, because I would have made a trip to see a Thanksgiving game. It looked like a blast!

Have you ever done a video on the Pit , football stadium at Elder HS in Cincinnati? If not it's definitely a good one.

@@BallparkHunter Cool. Wish you could go back and do my old HS in Chicago, St Rita. The old school/stadium was at 63rd and Western & we moved to a new campus at 79th & Western in early 90s. But the old stadium was the absolute best, it was the stadium used in Rudy during the scenes when he was in HS and ran down the line to hit the coach holding the tackling dummy. Two sides had concrete walls 25 ft or so high right next to the field it looked like a prison ffs. Ppl were so scared to play us at that place. Lane Tech's Stadium on the North Side of Chicago has some similarities but is nowhere near as intimate as old St Rita Stadium was. If you're interested in making a video possibly, dm me and I can help you along, it was a special special place
