Knew it wasn't right because everything was perfect on TV. I grabbed the left airpod so I had stereo left/right now and heard voice perfectly.
Love watching these types of videos even tho I am deathly afraid of flying. If I could make one suggestion, please leave out the constant music, it's not needed and is often too dramatic for what's happening on screen. Keep up the good work!
@@johnkluenker Good to hear. Something seems to have happened on YT lately where the music is getting mixed much higher than the voice. It wasn't so bad on this, but on some channels I've been watching for a decade I've taken to skipping when the music comes on.
Oh, my. So many memories. The last 5 years of my airline career were spent flying 757s and 777s from the Mainland to the 4 major Hawaiian islands. Your “Old School” plotting chart was done on each of my 200+ crossings. NEVER get complacent about what you are actually doing. I only made one oceanic turn back out of all those flights. We departed Maui for Phoenix and diverted to HNL. The 777 had CPDLC, so no position reports once established.
Question - is it a FAA requirement to have one pilot "ready" with an O2 mask due to certain conditions of the flight (location, altitude, etc.)? No matter what, it seems like a really good idea in general, especially after events like the Payne Stewart crash years ago.
Yes it is. Notice that I am wearing my oxygen mask around my neck, ready to just pull up on my face. I was wearing it, but pulled it down during the talking parts due to the fatigue that the mask causes on a five hour flight. It helps to take little breaks here and there while continuing to keep an eye on things.

I'm curious since I fly between KOA and SFO frequently (I live in Kona). You stated (at 3:15) that the flight to Hawaii is the longest over-water leg on the planet. However, the flight from Hawaii to Japan is 4,000 miles, but between KOA and SFO it's only 2,400 miles. When I view the North Pacific basin from Google Earth, it's obvious California is closer than Japan. Am I missing something here? I really did enjoy your video, especially as you were landing at KOA. I wish you would have shown the new terminal you used when getting off the jet. Thanks for posting this video. Mahalo!
Thank you! From what I understand, it is the longest overwater leg on the planet with absolutely no landing options in between. There are some small islands between Hawaii and Japan that you could divert to if you had a problem. There are no islands at all between the US mainland and Hawaii and no diversionary options north or south of the routes. I didn’t really get any video of the terminal building there. There isn’t much to it at Kona. Thanks for checking out the video! I’m jealous that you live in Kona!
You are most welcome. Yes, well we have lots of beautiful days in the year when the sky is deep royal blue with little wind in Sydney! Take care buddy!

Thanks for sharing. This was informative. Wow FL 470. @ 26:23 is that normal. I saw the right wing was almost 200 pounds less than the left wing. Thank you
Thank you! The fuel balance naturally fluctuates a bit during flight but a 200 pound imbalance is not abnormal. At a 400 pound imbalance we would get a master caution and an amber FUEL IMBALANCE message on the crew alerting system (CAS) screen. Prior to that point we would initiate a “cross feed” from the left tank which would shut off the fuel flow out of the right tank and only pull fuel from the left tank. Even a 400 pound imbalance does not noticeably affect the flight characteristics. It isn’t even considered to be an “emergency fuel imbalance” until you reach an 800 pound difference between the left and right tank.
I grew up at Flabob airport , a small general aviation airport in California. I’ve always loved airplanes but had a fascination for these new business jet aircraft. Amazing flight! You guys work so easy and efficiently together. Do you ever bring a cabin attendant along to help out in back? Your principals ever have you guys take them to Europe, because I imagine that'd be a fun trip. Just rip it across the USA, quick pitstop to stretch the legs and gas the plane, then open her throttles up again across the Pond.
Thank you! It certainly is fun to get paid to fly an awesome jet with a good friend. My company did fly the Citation X to Europe once but it was before my time. After that they decided to never go again due to the cost of the fuel and the fees. It was a very expensive trip! They don’t mind grabbing a first class airline ticket for something like that. We have never had a cabin attendant. We just make sure to keep the airplane stocked and they serve themselves. Usually they will buy food for us and bring it up to the flight deck. Very kind down-to-earth people!

💥 What a great video on the details involved in planning and executing a trip like that. I really enjoyed watching this. 👍
*Keep on Flying!*
@@johnkluenker Whoa! Pardon the pun but this video is really taking off!!
Thanks. Always love the pilots
Banging on the Sims.
18:05 Great trip. You should try it once at 7.5 kts. Talk about long, oh and a bit more rough! Helped reposition / move a 76' trawler yacht from Ko Olina marina on Oahu to Seattle. Talk about hours and hours of nothing, try days and days, depending on the seas it can take about 14-16 days to do that transit. Great job by the way! 👍😎
Wow! From Here in Upstate N.Y. Than k you for sharing and Inviting us along! Never been to Hawaii or the west...... and Always wanted to learn to fly as A Kid. Unfortunately has never come to Fruition ! But, can still Dream !
@@johnkluenker I Love these flying vid's! really appreciate them! and Thanks for the Encouragement! My Daughter lives in Leadville CO.. So planning on going out there this summer!
As a pilot for a major airline for 45 years, great job guys! 👍👍👍👍
John taking back to my Combat Comm. days with HF Radio. I had a QRP Van, 1 ton Chevy Step Van, HF Radios and Teletype. Aka Taco Wagon because it had a customer service window like food truck. Cheers!
Man that’s awesome! How cool is that!? Thank you so much for your service. 🙏🏻
Absolutely beautiful documentation of your experience. Music way too loud, interfering with dialog. Super effort. Thank you!
@@johnkluenker I also enjoyed the video and thought the music selection was great…didn’t notice the levels.
@@johnkluenker I may have found the problem inadvertently with the music, Your voice recording is mainly outputting to the left audio channel! I was watching on the TV and starting to get tired so transition to bed. I put in only my right airpod to finish the video in bed and couldn't hear your voice at all, only music. Knew it wasn't right because everything was perfect on TV. I grabbed the left airpod so I had stereo left/right now and heard voice perfectly.
Beautiful job guys. I enjoyed watching.
Nothing wrong with the music other than it's just too loud much of the time.
I second the suggestion to not add music.
I’m terms of audio, cockpit mic mirrored to the right channel of stereo would be great
Watching on my phone... the sound and music sounded good to me! Cool vid!
Wow!! What a career. That’s amazing! Must’ve been really nice to do that in a 777. I’m glad that you appreciated the video!
Question - is it a FAA requirement to have one pilot "ready" with an O2 mask due to certain conditions of the flight (location, altitude, etc.)? No matter what, it seems like a really good idea in general, especially after events like the Payne Stewart crash years ago.
Altitude yes.
Yes it is. Notice that I am wearing my oxygen mask around my neck, ready to just pull up on my face. I was wearing it, but pulled it down during the talking parts due to the fatigue that the mask causes on a five hour flight. It helps to take little breaks here and there while continuing to keep an eye on things.
I was wondering the same and had to surf through quite a few comments to get to the answer 😅
What a crew!. This is what's aviation all about. Well executed well done guys.
Thank you so much! Yes when I got moved up to the chief pilot position I was able to hire Mark who is a great friend of mine. Pretty good deal to get paid to fly this nice jet and also hang out with a good friend while doing it. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@johnkluenker That's awesome man. Well deserved. Videos like this keeps me motivated and moving forward. Im currently looking for CFI's so I can start flight training soon! (KSJC)😀 Keep up these awesome content. Safe flights man.
what an awesome video, love this format... allowing mortals a view into this world.
P.S. music is a little to loud...
Thanks for sharing this beautiful experience with us, I love your faces, You looks like a childs going to disneyland jejeje Best regards from MMMX
Haha! Thank you! Yes we are definitely blessed to get to do what we do and YES it does kind of feel like we’re going to Disneyland! 😂
The music is so loud it makes it hard to hear dialog at times. Can you tone it down a bit on future vids.
Lucky me I got PID by the military to fly El Toro to Hawaii in a C130 then Point Mugu to Hawaii in a P3 ..I spent 15 years flying at AA LAX to Hawaii as DC10 FE then DC 10FO then 767 Captain . Loved Kona , closed field ops and air stairs .
Music is too loud. I'm much more interested in the conversations.
agreed we're missing too much of your interaction, otherwise awwesome video!!
In flight school now. This is my dream plane. What a machine!! I will fly it one day. I can't wait! Thank you for the video!
Great ... EXCEPT for the overwhelming background music
The reflection on the ocean is truly incredible, thank you...
Thank you for checking out the video! I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Can you upload this without the disturbing music?
@@johnkluenker Thank you so much for uploading another version without the music. Us pilots who will never get to fly one of these would love to hear the radio calls and checklists. HF is hard enough to understand even without loud music. Music is not necessary for these types of in the cockpit YT videos. We want to see and hear what you're doing in there. 🙂
Excellent viewing for my morning coffee :-) I always love that trip!
Who told you that anyone wants to listen to music in this?? This is utube, not Hollywood.
Wow how cool is this getting to ride along, like being right there in the cockpit on this awesome ocean crossing to Hawaii!!
Thanks so much for this - What a great ride that CitationX must be! Excellent!
WHY, WHY WHY WHY???? The Dubbed over music????? Crazy....
Absolutely awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Stopped watching because of high volume of background music
Wow that’s the nice part of Stockton thanks you gave me a new perspective on the city🦜🦜🦜

Great video. Back in 94, got a chance to fly GM's Citation X
Fantastic! Watched it all! Well done! I am an older pilot-in-training in Sydney! Love these videos
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your comment. Lots of beautiful flying to be done in Australia I am sure! Enjoy every minute of it!
You are most welcome. Yes, well we have lots of beautiful days in the year when the sky is deep royal blue with little wind in Sydney! Take care buddy!
Great ride along! Thank you! Fly safe, Men.
Thank you!
You are so right about crossing the Pacific over to Hawaii. You see nothing but water and water!! I have loved taking the 777-200 and 300 over a few times. It is nice...
And taking the 757-200 over from L.A. is also nice..
@@johnkluenker Thank you for sharing the Citation X. Yes, flying the 777s into Kona have been nice from the long way here in Chicago. Then helping out the L.A. base to fly the 757s to Hawaii is nice. Seeing the water there close by the runway there is interest.
@@johnkluenker Flying to the west coast and over the Pacific is beautiful. I sometimes do miss flying in general by being with a former airline but I do have friends that still fly from Chicago. I stay in contact with them on a day to day bases.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos, please keep them coming and stay safe!

You guys clearly love your job with a passion. Loved the vid.
I grew up at Flabob airport , a small general aviation airport in California. I’ve always loved airplanes but had a fascination for these new business jet aircraft. I remember the release of the first Lear Jet. It had a climb rate of 10k fpm. I’m new to this you tube so please bear with me. I was astounded at that climb rate. Watching your video gave me the same excitement I had reading the specs of that Lear Jet so many years ago. Thank you for your video, I’m sure to watch each and every one. I still love airplanes but REALLY love jet aircraft. Thank you again.
@@johnkluenker that cub may have been Art Scholls. He stopped flying the cub when he got his first Chipmunk. Margaret Ritchie had a clip wing Taylorcraft.
Saw this Citation X video in the feed and was curious. When you said that you were leaving from Stockton, I had to see who it was. Then I saw it's N1BS. Good to see you out there. I've helped maintain this jet at our service facility in Sacramento. Looking forward to your next visit! Tell Norm that SMF says hello!
Always wanted to GO to HAWAII.
Thanks for taking me along.
BTW...my 44' sailboat would take 23.3 DAYS to accomplish the same.
What are the HF Frequencies for us Ham Radio buffs?..
Thanks for the great video..
You’re welcome! Thanks for the comment! The frequencies we typically use for position reports are 8843 kHz, 11282 kHz, 13354 kHz, 5547 kHz, and 11282 kHz.
@@johnkluenker thanks for the scoop! I’m sure it must have been absurdly expensive to get to Europe but as an aviator, that must be a fun trip to plan. Bummer it’s not in the cards any time soon. Thanks for taking us on along on the ride. Hope to see more fun trips soon!
Such a great way to travel. I did post grad school at the University of Hawaii, a year in Honolulu and a year on the Big Island. That was 20 years ago. I miss it every day.
Yes Amazing Great insights on the nav and prep pieces to a flight. Very interesting
@@johnkluenker That is NOT breakfast. That is junk food. 6 free range eggs on a slice of white bread is a breakfast. What you just ate would have driven up your Insulin so high that your Pancreas is being bashed every day. No wonder the USA is THE land of Type 2 Diabetes. Good luck.

Thank you Dave! The Citation X is actually a little behind in technology these days but it certainly gets the job done! I’m glad that you appreciated the video!
Most all newer jets use CPDLC and it is all done via a data link and only use HF as a back up.
Only time I flew on a (legacy) CX, was a 4 hours pre- delivery test flight. Measured some interior items as the plane c lol mbed, pressurized and descended. In the meantime, had nice views of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico. One thousand buttons on the original Honeywell system.
Very nice! Have you been on the X+ yet? It is certainly an impressive airplane! A much cleaner cockpit as well with the Garmin system.
