Your video saved me quite a bit of time as it was better than the video supplied by SOLE, the manufacturer. There have been a few changes made to the design of the plastic shell of the E25 model but your video covered all the basics and allowed for me to successfully replace my gear motor. If you do update this video, suggest you add a small pocket knife to the list of tools for my gear motor connections were sealed with a "rubber cement" which needed to be removed before the new motor could be installed. Thanks!
John Lesko Well thank you and yes they have made a few changes in plastic shell but that’s the only one I have to play with ! And yes a dull pocket knife is a great Idea 👍I show one in my treadmill controller videos . I guess I didn’t think of it on elliptical . Thanks Dave
@@FitnessTechnologyServices I'm a very handy person, but with the 317-020008 replacement gear motor I've just received, as John Lesko mentions, the connections at the gear motor are not only hot glued in, but the lower one (a disc) doesn't look like it will come off with a pocket knife, besides which, the the hot glue is not meant to be removed. It serves a purpose. You are meant to use the black plug at the other end, which is cable tied to the frame in several places and impossible to reach without further, and quite complicated, disassembly of the machine. Furthermore, I'm obviously replacing the gear motor because it is not working, so I am unable, (as you are with a perfectly functioning gear motor), to push the buttons and lower the resistance level, so the white plastic wheel rotates to the position of maximum slack. Even if I can can get the cable end out of the wheel, (and break the hot glue connections and successfully connect the new gear motor), the new gear motor wheel is in the maximum slack position, so their positions of the gear motor wheel and cable don't match. What will happen when the machine is turned back on?
@@peteransel2715 When the gear motor is stuck at it’s maximum setting you may have to remove the metal bracket to get slack on cable. Almost all ports on sole harness are glued in when the gear motor is sent to you it doesn’t come with the harness hook to the motor. So you have no choice but to remove glue to replace. If your motor is starting at around 7 ( max ) it should move to 1 ? Around. At start up
@@peteransel2715 once you get the new gear motor in it should work without the cable installed this way you can move the pulley head to the most slack in the cable
@@FitnessTechnologyServices Thanks for the fast reply. That makes sense regarding the wheel. What are your thoughts on removing the hot glued plugs? The top one is a pin connector and I should be able to remove it once the hot glue is removed, but the bottom one is a disc with a press-on retainer. This type of retainer is usually only meant to go on once. Have you removed them? Or do I have to disassemble the whole lower left side to access the black plug and cable ties at the other end?
This video helped me fix an e55 with a broken resistance motor. One issue I had with the replacement motor though was the white gear that the cable wraps around was too tight. I had to take the gear off and rotate it until the cable wasn't tight.
So I took apart the old gear motor box to see what went wrong. It turned out the gears were covered in heavy grease and wouldn't turn anymore. Cleaning out the grease seemed to fix it. Since I already bought a new motor though, I didn't bother keeping the old one.
@@BooneDogggy Well I never heard of the gear grease make the motor act up. Glad you got it up and running, will check the amount of grease next time I work on one. It should have some grease as it's gears. Thanks Dave
Really appreciate you sharing these repair tips. I buy and sell used fitness equipment and by far the #1 issue I find is resistance system issues. Either at the motor end, or the console end (not sending voltage to motor). In the latter case, I've been told there's no fix other than a new console. My current issue is that I have an Epic A30E elliptical (looks like a Sole copy) that will not startup unless the resistance motor is not under load or alternately disconnected altogether. To get the unit to complete its startup check, I have to either unlug the motor harness, or detach the resistance motor cable from the flywheel brake (so its not under load tension from the flywheel brake magnet springs). In this case, it operates as expected with console keypresses, resistance increase makes the motor spin counterclockwise to unwind the cable to the min detent location, and resistance decrease winds the cable to the around the spool until it reaches the max detent location (about 3/4 turn in either direction). Have you seen this before? Is the motor bad? I'm getting +/- 5 volts at the motor harness when its disconnected. However, when the harness is connected I'm getting weirdly high and fluctuating readings on the DMM.
I know what you mean about resistance issues. Two years ago, I purchased an e35 and had it professionally assembled. On my first workout, the resistance failed. The entire two years since has been constant failures and tech visits. Just about every part was replaced, including the console. Finally, Sole agreed to replace it with a new 2020 model, which I assembled myself this week. I was as careful as humanly possible, especially with the cables. First full workout went well. It seemed a little tight but I chalked that up to being out of practice. On the second, the resistance was definitely weak at first. It eventually tightened up and seemed to work okay when I tested it again, but now I'm dreading having to go through the same mess all over again. Plus, my labor warranty is up so I'll have to replace any parts myself. I am bookmarking this video. Also, I have to start at a resistance of 12. Is that normal?
@@r209 You want to be sure that the resistance magnets inside the flywheel brake assembly are as close to the flywheel as possible. To check this, (once you have the large outer plastic shroud covers off the machine so that you can visually inspect the flywheel assembly) look for the small plastic piece (may be orange or cream color, about the size of a large pencil eraser). Its attached to the end of the tension motor cable and should be visible in a small window opening at the top of the inner flywheel brake assembly. That piece should be at the very top of the window in order to insure maximum resistance. If it is not, check the collar nut on tension cable where it meets up with this piece. There is a collar nut on the resistance cable where it meets the flywheel magnet assembly. For max resistance, make sure this nut is fully threaded onto the metal fastener. Alternately, to reduce the max resistance, you would unscrew this collar nut, which will pull the plastic piece down, along with the magnets, pulling them further from the spinning flywheel, thus decreasing the resistance between the brake magnets and the spinning flywheel. Good luck!
Thanks Scott yes the resistance system is the most common issue on all ellipticals sounds like you have a shorted motor you can test this by putting 6 vdc right to motor on the blue and gold [yellow] make sure it turns. If unit has a incline It has a power board that the motor runs into before it gets to console issue could be in that board also. since console works on its own
@@funtimes7755 Thanks David. Yes, motor is good. I've tested it with a 9 volt battery. I actually have tested 3 motors and all work when direct connected to the battery. The unit has a lower control board that controls operation of both the incline motor and the resistance motor. There is only a 4 wire harness coming into that board from the upper console. Then there is a 5 wire harness going from this lower board to the resistance motor. So, the 4 wire console harness is correctly sending the signals to the lower board (resistance up/down or resistance 2,4,8,12,16,20,24). However, apparently somewhere on the board, there is something amiss. Perhaps a dedicated voltage regulator for the resistance circuit that is not passing enough voltage to the motor. The motor is not getting sufficient voltage to pull the spring assisted magnets away from the large 30 pound flywheel. My temp fix was to replace the motor with a manual resistance cable and control knob I salvaged from a Weslo exercise bike. It works but it is very hard to turn it down from 3 to 1. Increasing resistance is much easier since the magnets help in that direction. I'm going to try some lighter springs inside the brake assembly to help with this. Alternately, replacing the $120 board will probably fix the issue without need of the manual cable rig.
Do you have or know where I get a diagram of the inside of the flywheel. Ours is making a noise from inside. I opened it and I don't think the springs are set right
Thanks for the great video. I am so disappointed in Sole Fitness. My e35 has broken its cable 3 times so far in the 3 years we have owned it. I currently have been waiting over six months to replace the motor and new cable. They think the motor is over-tightening causing these failures. They are having supply issues they say. Thanks for the video it will be very helpful when I finally get the parts one day because the labor side of my warranty is expired =(
Hmmm that’s too much the pulley on the motor should only go to about 1 check that when it is working. Also check the level in the flywheel see if it moves smoothly and yes these cables seem to be back order a lot lately. Sorry ! And thank you for the complement
Thank you for the video. I’m going to try to replace the motor on my elliptical after watching it. I do have a question though. Since the resistance buttons aren’t working my mine because the motor is broke, how do I create that slack in the cable to make it easier to remove the motor?
Hi. Thanks for the informative video. I've been using my elliptical for a few years. The tension cable is still in good shape. Recently, I am getting a 'motor error' message when I try to increase resistance. The motor moves the cable only slightly, then the error message appears.
@@muhammedk470 you are welcome I would start with the gear motor. With the console sending a signal to move the motor .the gear motor would be the most likely issue
6 year old video, but my E55 is a few years older than that. This was marginaly helpful, but the resistance motor on mine is completely different from this one. Key being there are no connectors on it at all. The assembly is also blue in color. The second issue was the motor isn't working at all, hence why I'm trying to replace it, so it's not possible to loosen it up to get slack on the cable.
I replaced my gear motor easily thanks to your instructions. However when I connect the new motor and power on it is making a clicking sound. Any ideas.
Well I know you just replace it but clicking is normally how we judge if it is bad? The only thing I can think of is the console is over sending the signal do the numbers change on the console?
I was able to get the motor off but I cannot get the tension to lighten up. Anytime I moved the level up or down it just gave me the error code. When I get the new motor is there any other way to loosen the tension wire so I can get the new one on?
I did remove that because that was the only way I could get it off. I’m worried about not having any slack when I try to put a new one on. Any suggestions?
Send me a pic of motor, and you serial number to Fitnesspartspro@gmail.com some do have a pig tail on it and it disconnect is 3 inches down. But most are just over glued, and look sealed .mine was 👍
I’ve replaced the motor, I no longer see the error message, and I can see the motor turning when I change the resistance, however, it doesn’t seem to be giving me any more resistance when on the machine. Level 1 is as easy as level 20.
Hi. Thank you for your video. I have an e20 and the crank arm must be removed for me to get to the motor. Do you know what tools I would need to remove the crank arm?
Leonilde DC Hmm most times you just need to remove all hood /cover screws .This will allow you to replace gear motor if not a two piece gear puller will remove crank ! But most times it comes off by just pulling on it once bolt is loosened
I have the sole E-95 and my resistance isn’t working it’s just stuck on level one. If I replace the gear motor like you did here would that most likely fix the resistance issue? Thanks
Hey Dave, I was trying to replace the gear motor until I realized the opposing end of the black non electrical wire you attach to the gear motor is unbound. Would I have to unscrew most of the front end of the elliptical to reattach it?
This means it came unhooked at the flywheel see videos installing sole flywheel, and understanding sole break system . To get a good look at Steel cable hook up
You have been very helpful. I actually lubricated all the areas on my F85 and stopped the squeaking. If I could make one suggestion. When you say “ just do this right here “ you’re too far away for us to see where “here” is. Thanks.
My struggle with the e95 is ongoing. I keep getting different answers from Sole as to whether there is something wrong with my electricity. One tech suggested plugging it into an outlet on a different breaker, which actually made a difference, but the machine still wasn't working correctly. I plugged several different things into the original outlet and left each running for a few days, and nothing happened. And yet four different Sole machines failed immediately after being plugged into that outlet. I have a service appointment coming up and am wondering what to do once the new parts are installed. Should I continue using the other outlet (requires long extension cord), use a surge protector on the original, or hire a professional to check it out before plugging it in? Thanks!
First off Wow I have never heard of that 4 units . I would use as short of a cord that you can . And have someone look at that outlet makes no sense unless the other stuff you have plugged into it doesn't require ground and u have a ground issue and U need a professional to look at that.
@@FitnessTechnologyServices The electrician just left and said the electricity throughout the house was perfect and could not have damaged the machine. The only suggestion he had was a power conditioner. A new tech will be out next week to install parts. Would it make any difference to get a conditioner before then?
Ryan Kalnoski Hi Ryan just spoke to sole currently looks like they are sending out a bunch of wire harnesses seems like your having an input issue to your gear motor. More than likely this could b a console issue. I would disconnect all inputs to resistance from handle bar to console and see if it's in the console. And no I don't think u need an electrical conditioner and either did my contact at sole. Would b easier to have a conversation with you, stuck in Florida right now, should be back Sunday if you wanna call the office and leave your number. 410-286-5566 thanks Dave
@@FitnessTechnologyServices Thanks so much for that. Since it's not an electrical problem, does that mean I've been getting faulty equipment from Sole? The only other cause I can think of is damage during assembly. I had a terrible time with the console on the last e35 and was very afraid of damaging the wires. Nothing fit right. It's hard to pin down what the problem might be because it's so random. There's a deep rumble that comes and goes. Sometimes it's very bad, and sometimes it's barely there.
@@r209 Hi Ryan, can't really say , could be a combo of both phone diagnostics or shorted wire from install. The last message I got I thought you had an e95, but either way rumbling noise on and off is normally due to the flywheel bearings. Not much else causes that noise, have you had a tech out lately? Please list all current problems and type machine you have and I will see if I can help. Thanks Dave
Do you by any chance know what could cause the resistance to change VERY little on an E35? I’ve taken the side covers off and from what I can tell, everything is fine - the motor rotates, the cable is fine, and the magnets move back and forth just fine, but the change in resistance between high and low is BARELY noticeable. Do you know what it could be?
I was given a used Sole E35. I can hear the gear motor but there doesn’t seem to be any resistance. Do you recommend replacing a specific part or are there any troubleshooting I can try to figure out the issue? Thanks in advance.
Well does it change at all on some years they put 3 magnets in the flywheel! And it does not change much. On some units they put 6 magnets and it makes it much harder I have a video on that understanding sole brake system
Robert Reiley Hello sir you will have to open cover and see if motor turns the pulley head head should start at 7. And end around 2 o’clock seven should be hard 2 should be easy .
my kid seems to have played with the e95 power cable and plugged it in a 220 v. outlet. Now I get the e2 code (motor error). The incline seems to be OK with some efforts getting the error code out of screen. However the resistance is not working at all. I am in Saudi Arabia and I have to order parts from the US. Do you recommend I order power board and motor? or try replacing the motor first? Thanks
Hi! I get the E-2 motor error. The wheel always clicks when it trying to adjust then the error comes out. I bought a gear motor from your website and I received. I’m trying to take off the wire from the wheel and it doesn’t adjust. Is there another way to take off the wire from the wheel? Also there is hot glue on the other wires. What is the best way to take off those?
@@FitnessTechnologyServices thank you! I was able to replace it and it worked! You were right! I’m so happy you post videos on Sole machines! This is the second time I was able to fix my machine because of your videos and supplies! I did notice that that the resistance is strong even on level 1. Did I do something wrong? Or do I need to add oil? It’s been a year since it’s been sitting in my garage not working until now.
Mine suddenly showed a Motor Error flashing over and over again with no codes. The fan works and the machines moves fine. I checked the connections on the neck and under the paddles. What could it be?
@@becomingpeculiar2815 Well flashing display normally means display is bad. But I guess if gear motor is bad it could prompt the display to show motor errors
No don't pry, you have to remove the screws that attach the covers together. Loosen the bottom screws the right cover will open the left stays there until you remove a screw that holds it on in center of unit . The one in video is already broken hope this helps. Dave
Well when you get the error message as soon as it comes on we lean towards console. If it happens one or two seconds after console comes on gear motor, harder to do ! But much less expensive
Sole has agreed to send a replacement machine, upgrading to the e95. I was wondering what caused the *three* e35s to fail immediately and am concerned that it may have something to do with the electricity in my house. Sole told me that the machine is designed to prevent this, but I'd really appreciate a second opinion.
Hi Ryan I am sorry but sole would always tell me that the e 95 is a upgrade the lower board is bigger on the 95 but I don't know if it is set up for bad household current but it is over all a better unit. The best thing to do is get a kill a watt meter and plug it in outlet and meter your voltage. Check it once a day and if your current changes plug in a cheap radio in it and see what happens I of course have a video on it if you need one e mail me at fitness medics@gmail.Com. It can be used on any 110 appliance the video is called kill a watt amp meter on my channel hope this helps. Thanks Dave
Thanks for the video. I have an E35 purchased in 2009. 2 questions please 1) Is it not recommended to unplug the unit before doing any of this type of maintenance? 2) My display screen only shows "MOTOR ERROR" message, how would I be able to adjust the resistance to loosen that wire?
1.Well of course it is always safer to unplug but then you can't turn gear motor and power at that point is 12 volts dc fairly safe and on a multi pin wire hard to touch pins even .But always make sure you feel safe before proceeding . 2.If unit comes on with a motor error and no clicking sound motor may be jammed you will need to remove the silver cable bracket to get slack in cable, after that reassembly will be the same as video. For more direct information e mail me at fitness medics@gmail .com
Two answers yes if you are uncomfortable working with it hot .But the gear motor has only 6vdc going to it and you need power to test it. And there’s no way to adjust cable? You have to remove motor to get slack in cable
Another problem has popped up with my e35. Bolts and screws loosen after even a short workout. I tightened every one as much as possible during assembly. I tightened them again before another workout and again found them loose afterward. Also, the screws on the roller covers were very loose. I tightened them and had the same results as the bolts. What could be causing this? Thanks.
The incline doesn't go up or down. I already pressed the start and incline to calibrate, and still is not working. Do I need to change the control board? or the motor?
Mirna Unger Hello it is almost never the motor . Send me your serial # to Fitnesspartspro @ g mail . Com so I can get you the right one also I have a video on that you can call 410 286 5566 for more troubleshooting
In addition to the gear motor, Sole sent me an incline controller, a computer cable, and a steel cable. Could you tell me roughly how difficult these are to install in an e35? Thanks!
Please let me know what the problem is, gear motor is very easy to do, I have a video on that. The cable usually isn't the problem and if you can hear the motor turn it's not the controller. The controller and cable are both hard to do. Hope this helps. Dave
@@funtimes7755 Thanks for responding. The problem has always been resistance. It is very inconsistent. On the same setting, it can be too high or too low. One day it will almost work normally and the next I have to adjust it several times. It's been the same across three machines, including the 2020 model. The same tech was out six times and became *extremely* frustrated with the machine. I overheard him making calls asking for help and saying what a difficult job it was. This is why I am nervous about installing parts. The parts Sole sent were also sent for the previous machine and didn't solve the problem. The machine also began ratting. I found that the bolts in the handlebar were extremely loose. I double checked every bolt after putting the machine together and they were all tight. The previous machine also had this problem, but the 2020 has only seen a few uses.
Hi Ryan the gear motor motor is the best possibility out of those parts. The steel cable and wire harness would never be able to be intermittent when they fail they break. Start with motor I have a video on that and it is the easiest to do. Most likely it is display board, on your bolt issue use blue loctite. Hope this helps Dave
@@funtimes7755 Thanks. The previous e35 had the gear motor replaced twice which helped for a while and then the same problem happened. The tech told me Sole shipped a bad motor.

I need your assistance on an older model e25. Every time I change resistance or up level to level 2 or higher. The screen would go restart. Please show me some guidance. Thank you very much in advance
Ok with no incline this means the power runs from the gear motor to your console so you will need to start with replacing gear motor you will need serial for that mostly all soles have it under the odd angle piece triangle shape you see me popping it up in video note some of these are screwed together
Hi, great video! I have the E35 with the E2 motor error. My husband and i watched the video together. Got the old part off and the new part on. It all seemed good however when my husband used it, it seemed like the resistance level was strange. On level 1 it felt like a super high level, very hard to use. when i tried to go to higher level it felt exactly the same. so it seems its stuck at a high level of resistance no matter what level is selected. Has this ever happened to you? Is there something he could try? It seemed very straight forward. while the elliptical was opened and the level was pressed, the white circle with the cable in it was turning.
ok we messed around with a bit more, frustrated so we had to walk away for a bit lol. We unplugged for a bit and let it rest (and us). Once it was started, he played with the levels without using a programmed workout. Just hit the start which was at level 1. Level 1 was hard, so he kept going up with the level button and it got easier (less resistance). All of a sudden E2 motor error came up. Shut off again for a bit. Tried the same test, level 1 was highest resistance but this time only tried up to level 15 and it got easier and no E2 motor error at that level. Any ideas on what to try?

Thanks for showing. Very easy to follow. Enjoy
This video helped me fix an e55 with a broken resistance motor. One issue I had with the replacement motor though was the white gear that the cable wraps around was too tight. I had to take the gear off and rotate it until the cable wasn't tight.
Thank you ! and it depends on were the gear motor fails some times you even have to remove the silver holding plate
Good luck!
@@eighties8 Thanks for the thorough reply!
I opened it and I don't think the springs are set right
Hmm sorry I don’t. I have never seen any adjustment to the springs! Noise is normally in the bearing. Or the magnet is coming unglued and rubbing
Sometimes you have to remove the little steel metal bracket that’s holding the cable onto the gear motor that will give you slack and you’re welcome
@@FitnessTechnologyServicesThanks. Can these be fixed, or would it need to be replaced?

Sometimes you have to remove the steel cable mounting bracket on the motor itself
I did remove that because that was the only way I could get it off. I’m worried about not having any slack when I try to put a new one on. Any suggestions?
@@KellyLocklear you should be able to pull on cable by hooking it up to the motor first off the frame then mount to elliptical frame

I’ve replaced the motor, I no longer see the error message, and I can see the motor turning when I change the resistance, however, it doesn’t seem to be giving me any more resistance when on the machine. Level 1 is as easy as level 20.
Check the steel cable that runs from the gear motor to the flywheel make sure the little plastic (slider) is moving as the gear motor turns

Ryan Kalnoski
Hi Ryan just spoke to sole currently looks like they are sending out a bunch of wire harnesses seems like your having an input issue to your gear motor.
Amir S It would depend on how many magnets the flywheel has they change from year to year ! See video on sole flywheel
Great video, thanks for sharing.
We have the e35. Loosened the screws to replace motor, but the hood won’t budge. We can’t even pry it off.
This this motor the most likely cause for lack of resistance in the settings?
I have mine set a maximum resistance level and it is barely noticeable.

my kid seems to have played with the e95 power cable and plugged it in a 220 v. outlet. Now I get the e2 code (motor error). The incline seems to be OK with some efforts getting the error code out of screen. However the resistance is not working at all. I am in Saudi Arabia and I have to order parts from the US. Do you recommend I order power board and motor? or try replacing the motor first? Thanks

I’m trying to take off the wire from the wheel and it doesn’t adjust. Is there another way to take off the wire from the wheel? Also there is hot glue on the other wires.
Thanks for the video. I have an E35 purchased in 2009. 2 questions please
1) Is it not recommended to unplug the unit before doing any of this type of maintenance?

E95 says motor error e2. The incline still works. It comes on as soon as you turn on the machine. So this is me and I probably need a new gear motor
Yep I would for sure start with that . You can see your part on Fitnesspartspro.com
