In college, One of my fellow students, call him Johnny Lincoln, originally from Lincoln Nebraska, was a full-blown Creationist. This was in the mid-sixties. His goal was to desttroy the old earth hypothesis and evolution from the inside. By our third year he could no longer hold onto his beliefs. He went home that summer and, in a letter, stated he could not reconcile his love of God and the facts he had learned in college. He took his own life. To be that indoctrinated that you cannot let go and are so torn up that you kill yourself, that speaks to the evil of fundamentalist religion.
I had a similar upbringing, but by my third year of college as a wildlife science major, I just found the facts way more exciting than what a religion was telling me, so I had the opposite experience afterwards and became much happier since I knew how things worked.
I had a friend who went to college for biology specifically so he could debunk the theory of evolution. Fortunately for the rest of us he didn't take his own life, but instead became an atheist and went on to get a PhD in conservation biology from Yale University.
I have seen similar things happen - not as far as suicide, but certainly giving up any career options that require thought just to avoid the cognitive stress.
Hey, Erika: Some of us are here for the academic papers, some of us are here to watch you bash YEC badthink, but all of us are here because we find you, personally, entertaining and informative. Just be you. Short stuff is good, long stuff is good.
Yeah! I’m here for it all! Erika legitimately is the one who showed me how evolution is obviously real, and exposed me to science rather than the YEC homeschool textbooks I grew up with. But a video like this is just so entertaining, I’m actually more likely to sit through it all haha
We were so stupid in the 70s and 80s. I really over did it while I was visiting San Diego. Seemed so nice sitting out in the sun. In days I looked like I needed skin grafts.
As a former YEC who was homeschooled all my life to protect me from "atheist ideology," this kind of channel is invaluable to me. Huge thanks to all the people who are doing this kind of stuff (and to my cellular and molecular biology professor) for helping me to break free from that and fill the gaps in my knowledge. I'm currently studying to be a physicist thanks in part to these resources. Edit (August 19 2023): added quotation marks to "atheist Ideology" to clarify that it is not intended to be an accurate use of the phrase but rather a quote from my parents

Flat earthers, chemtrailers, creationists and other quacks use the same type of arguments. They all pretend science is working hard to supress their nonsense. They are all conspiracy nutjobs while using the science they deny.
Rob Skiba was a professional, studied christian that has specialized in the subset of christian flat earthers. His videos were pretty skilfull, bringing largely reasonable physics, then sneaking in some unconspicuous-looking inaccuracies, going on correct to let the errors simmer for a while, but then making a sharp turn and fully exploiting the dud he had smuggled in. But he became a victim of his own delusions, he wwas of course a covid-denier and anti-vaxxer - and died of Covid,
What you discussed is literally what happened to me. I grew up young earth creationist and then eventually when I found out one thing I was told was straight up a lie, it sent me down a hole of "what else was I lied to about it?" And then I kept reading and reading and it became impossible for me to hold that kind of idea. It was necessary, but also emotionally rough
It was the same to me. And to be honest, it angers me. Because the time I had to think about these things and find out that they are probably wrong isn't needed at all. It would be much better to just tell children stuff that actually exists, stuff that's observable and teach them valuable skills.
Seeing that girl talk about her experience was very sad, and made me very angry. Here is a girl who could go on to be a great scientist, she’s clearly intelligent and interested. But instead she’s being exposed to this garbage. I hope she goes on to take legitimate STEM courses in high school and college and can deconstruct from all this as soon as possible.
I am guessing if she ever finds out all of what she was taught was wrong she will lose her faith entirely. That's what seems to happen to intellectually curious people when their religion is so restrictive on access to information the rest of the world already knows.
Yeah, seeing her was like a blast from the (not so distant) past for me. Up until recently (a few years) I’d been completely raised on YEC beliefs and values- I was and still am a dinosaur person, so I absolutely got suckered in by Ken Ham’s brand of creationism. Plus, I liked arguing, so apologetics was a big deal to me. And I can confirm, it was not a fun experience having to deconstruct all that. I’m glad I did, but it completely wrecked my faith and made me quite bitter for a while. Im pretty sure I’m still a little bitter lol.
@@Katie-hh9eu I can speak from experience. I wasn't in such an overbearing situation (my parents were fine with me learning about tons of science despite being devout Christians), but learning about evolution threw me for a loop. On one hand, it was an insanely intriguing field that I was desperate to know more about, but on the other, it directly challenged my beliefs. I chose to set my beliefs aside and indulge in the science behind evolution, and quickly realized that it made sense, too much sense. It made way more sense than any possible creationist explanation, so I stopped believing in creationism and became a theistic evolutionist. But as I got older, I began to challenge the theistic beliefs I had, and after swallowing the fact that my beliefs were based purely on emotion and existential fear, I decided to switch my worldview to one based on rationality and empirical evidence. If I wanted to be honest and have this worldview, I had to become an atheist. So I did. And here I am today, very happy with my decision to deconvert. And for the cherry on top, my family was fine with my deconversion. My dad took some time to warm up to me again (he was by far the most devout), but I have a happy family life despite being an atheist in a Christian household.
"I am sensitive" ❤❤❤ Thank you for normalizing that. I spend so much time apologizing for being shaken up by things. I wish people were better about that. It's not a character flaw. It's our "settings".
It's weird how sensitivity is a desireable trait in literally everything humans make but for some reason it isn't in humans. As someone with alexithymia who is probably the opposite of “sensitive” in a lot of ways it never made sense to me, not being able to feel your feelings is a huge problem for me. My life would be way easier if I was sensitive.
I also was sent to a christian school in middle school. All I knew was YEC talk and thought it was the truth. I went back to public school and was failing all my important classes because everything I was taught in private school was "secular education bad, secular education wrong" I graduated high school with a D+. It took me YEARS to unlearn everything and actually pick up science and proper educational topics. I realize my parents thought they were doing what was best for me but.... all it did was fuck me up.
I feel this. I was homeschooled K-12 and YEC was all I was exposed to. I was taught that any arguments supporting evolution were made up lies meant to hide the truth from the masses. Imagine my surprise when it clicked that the opposite was true!

Thank you for not disparaging faith and for not treating Christians as a monolith.
Same here. My faith isn't shaken because of evolution. If anything, I'm strengthened by it. I do find it funny that lying is a "sin" yet YEC do it often or are terrified of actual peer review by non-YEC scientists. I wonder if they've ever stopped to consider that.
@@geminigrrl66 It's sad to me how much the YECs place religion in opposition to modern science when most scientists are religious, and religious scholars historically contributed immensely to our discoveries about math, physics, and the natural world. Stop calling it "filler" content and just say they're "lighter, more commentary-focused videos" - an extremely common style of content that you don't have to justify making. I do like that you often transparently describe the process of sifting for and deciding on what what you want to use for this type of video because I think most creators don't, so that can be interesting to hear a bit of. Creationists on the other hand say that both anything above 50% is certain, and anything under 50% confidence means we have no idea whatsoever.
They also get to vote, and are taught to distrust science...theres a big political agenda behind the funding of these kind of disinformation schools, with the denial of climate science coming easily to people who have been told that 'mainstream science' cant be trusted.

@@TlalocTemporal I wouldn't say it's how the sails are set up. It's how the boat moves if you're trying to sail upwind. For obvious reasons, a sailboat can't travel straight into the wind but thanks to the magic of vector addition, if it sails at an angle to the wind it can make headway against the wind. However, to keep on course to its destination, it has to periodically change direction. Tacking means sailing in a zigzag pattern upwind with the changes of direction bracketing the intended destination. Each time the sailboat changes direction is changing tack.
@@heatherkuhn6559 -- I had thought tacking was something done to the righing (and thetefore the course), and while the etymology backs me up, it seems the language has evolved completely beyond that.

This is going to be random but I relate heavily to Emily (I think that was her name) I have always been interested in science but my family is YEC and I'm currently in middle school and I've recently found your channel (and The Skeptik and Forrest Valkai) and I am in the middle of not being a YEC anymore and it made me sad to see someone similar to me but still trapped in the loop of blocking critical thinking. (Also Im very sorry I am absolute crap at punctuation so I forget to add it so that's why there's none sorry)
Good for you! Keep learning critical thinking skills, checking the primary resources, and listening to confirmed experts in their field, and you will be able to navigate all the dogma, propaganda and misinformation prevalent in this information age. Also, a tip with punctuation: try reading your writing out loud. Note where you want to take a breath, or pause, or stop. If you need to take a breath, put a comma in, as I have just done. If your sentence has a preface, then put a comma after that part. E.g., your first sentence: This is going to be random, but I relate to Emily. If you are writing more than one or two 'and's to join ideas in a sentence, then it's typically a good idea to stop the sentence with a period/ full stop, and start a new sentence with a capital letter. A sentence that is too long with connecting words such as 'and', 'also', 'in addition', etc. is called a 'run-on sentence'. Break that sentence up into smaller sentences with fewer ideas in it, and it will be easier to read without passing out. 😊 I learned punctuation at the same time as I was learning singing, and playing woodwind instruments, so I am hyper-focused on making sure I use punctuation for phrasing and breathing! There is a bit of creative license with punctuation. Choose what you feel reads best. 😊
I will use your comment as an example for applying punctuation as I described above: This is going to be random, but I relate heavily to Emily. (I think that was her name). I have always been interested in science, but my family is Y.E.C. I am currently in middle school. I've recently found your channel, (and The Skeptik and Forrest Valkai), and I am in the middle of not being a Y.E.C. anymore. It made me sad to see someone similar to me, but still trapped in the loop of blocking critical thinking. Try reading your original writing out loud; then this version. (Note that I just used a semicolon ;) ) Hopefully, you won't need oxygen after this one! Other than the crazy long run-on sentence, you seem to have a strong grasp of grammar and other punctuation, such as contractions e.g, 'I have' contracted to 'I've' etc. You also write with clarity and fluency. You give me hope for the future! From a middle-aged atheist. 😊
A full stop and a comma will serve you well for almost all needed punctuation. The two comments replying here already do a good and comprehensive job addressing the punctuation. What comes through regardless are your ideas which are spot on.
In a youtube comment punction isn't super important but if you're ever writing anything for school just try to always make your sentences as short as possible. Shorter and simpler sentences are always easier to understand so your writing will be vastly improved if you just aim for that. Usually when I write something important I'll start out by just writing in one stream until I'm done and then afterwards I go back and try to make my sentences as short as possible, and try to cut away as much as possible. Also try to avoid comas and focus on having as many periods as possible, if a sentence has a lot of comas it is probably overly complex and difficult to understand.
Erica, the big grain of hope in this story is that despite going to a YEC middle school you became one of the AWESOMIST SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS on t'internet.

Tack is right, actually! It's a sailing term. To tack is to turn the boat so that the wind is blowing over the opposite site of the boat, but so that the turn involves pointing directly into the wind at some point (doing the same thing but with the stern pointing into the wind at some point during the turn is called a jibe).
Last week a female college student from Eastern Europe rang my doorbell. She was selling Christian education curriculum for a direct marketing company from Tennessee., Advantage. She was all alone in a foreign, gun-crazed country where she could be shot for ringing someone’s doorbell, she could be abducted and raped and no one would ever know what happened to her. This whole scenario was really disturbing. I called the police to check on her, I filed a report about the company with the BBB and sent an email to the company chastising them for placing her in a dangerous, vulnerable situation. Very pro-life of those greedy bastards. They have no morals.
There is a lot of reasons that i dont want religious door sellers ringing my doorbell, but if those people are in mortal danger for doing it, it tells more about the place you live, and how fearfull you all are, some of you fear the gun-crazed, and the gun crazed fear everyone else.
@@andersandersen6295 I was thinking specifically about the young man who accidentally went to the wrong house and got shot for it. There are gun nuts in every neighborhood. If you don’t think that is true you are not in touch with what is going on around you. Even the people you would never expect to have guns have them. There are more guns in America than there are people. With 2 mass shootings every single day (not to mention individual shootings) how can anyone not have that very real possibility in the back of their mind? I also personally know young women who have been raped. Another crime happening more than ever in this country. No, I am realistic because I’m 70 and have seen how much life in America has changed in the past 30 years and even more since our criminal former president gained a cult following. This is not a safe country compared to Canada, Europe, Australia and the Scandinavian countries. I would love to live in one of those countries but, this is where my family is. 🤷🏼♀️
I happen to live in a country where you cant just buy a gun, you need very specific reasons to have one, and for the most part that reason is hunting, wich requires you to take a course that lasts several months ending with tests that you can easily fail. But im well aware of the love many americans hold for guns or weapons of any sort and i dont hear many reasons to own them that does not make me shake my head in disbelief. Now you have a problem with weapons, but you also have a problem with black crime and the following suspicion towards them if they happen to walk around in a place dominated by white people, i can see that combination making some more trigger happy and nervous, so i have a bit of a problem when you compare a eastern european girl with a black male teenager, that tells me that there are some things you have not quite understood. @@26beegee

I was an international flight attendant for 20 years and we were always cautioned about going out alone and told to leave a note in our room stating where we were going. I know Switzerland has a lot of guns and stringent laws and training are required. They don’t have the violence we have. I respect that. I have never even touched a gun and don’t feel the need to do so. Sure but rape and getting shot are completely different concerns, and i think you are overreacting because you have had that terrible experience with your daughter. Calling the police and reporting a company for seeing a young woman go door to door is just not normal behaviour, or atleast it should not be normal, but in the light of what happened to your daughter i understand if you are damaged and see ghosts everywhere, im not saying that rape is not happening a lot, but meeting the world with the expectation that there is a rapist lurking around every corner and behind every door is just not rational thinking.@@26beegee

Sadly, I fear that many of those kids won’t get the opportunity to be exposed to the real world. Note that the place they’re doing the classes is Lynchburg, Virginia, which is home to the hyper-evangelical Liberty University and its associated K-12 school Lynchburg Christian Academy. When I went there (didn’t deconstruct from the whole YEC thing until after college), they had a required freshman course called “Biblical Worldview” and these people are calling theirs “Creation Worldview”. I would be surprised if there wasn’t at least some cross pollination going on there or a direct link. The trailer gives me major LU film school vibes as well. And if those kids are LCA students, they get either a very heavy discount or full scholarship at LU, as well as automatic admission. At least that was the case about a decade ago.
A similar thing happened to me in Thailand. I was shallow water snorkelling so I didn't wear my dive suit. I got sunburnt on my back and thighs after less than 1.5 hours which was so painful that I needed opioid medication to be able to sleep for the next 5 days. The amount of skin I lost was scary, I'm a registered nurse and I thought I might need skin grafts at one point. Anyone who hasn't experienced that simply can't know, it's nothing like getting sunburn that is a little itchy at higher latitudes. Just like you I vowed to never let that happen again so wherever I go to the tropics now I ALWAYS take 2 dive suits and I never sunbathe.
yep, hanging around at the surface of the water can actually magnify the sunlight, thats why watering plants must be done by watering the soil and not the actual plant, or the plant gets burned and dies if it is wet in the sun

You know the old saying "Be careful what you wish for"? I think if creationists ever got their "theory" taught alongside science in a science classroom, they'd want it separated because on the one side, you have massive amounts of evidence and study and experiments and knowledge gained through observation, and on the other side you have a story in a book that a lot of people believe.
The funny thing is that creationism occasionally does get brought up in biology classes here in Denmark but it's used specifically as an example of pseudoscience. It's even common for high school students to write combined papers in biology and sociology exploring creationism is and using it as a case study for pseudoscience.
I recently discovered your channel through a funny evolutionary path (from Professor Dave to Aron Ra to you) and, ape, I don't regret it 😄. Great work !
Pre-Covid one of the local church groups would parade their kids around my neighborhood to give rehearsed speeches like Emily's. It only slightly slowed down the door slam in the face.
Man, Erika, Your description of that sunburn after diving reminded of the time I used expired sunscreen. Fun fact: those expiration dates are NO JOKE. The sunscreen almost turns into cooking oil and I was in a VERY similar state of deep blisters and no sleep
As a former YEC indoctrinated child, the good news is we grow up and still get to make up our own minds, but the bad news is learning evolution is a lot of work when you have to do it alone as an adult. That's why I appreciate your channel. I've learned a lot from you already
Tbf learning evolution is a lot of work for anyone, all science is and evolution is a very complex theory that requires you to discard a lot of your intuitions about how the world works.
I just want to chime in on my experience with creationism. There is no way to sway a person when all they do is shrug their shoulders and say " God did that". At every example they can say this and there is nothing you can prove otherwise because God makes EVERYTHING possible. For Me it comes down to freedom. Creationists are free to believe whatever they want as everyone can. Personally I find it silly but that's fine. I enjoy your video's. Rock on!!!!

@@kyleward3914 Sorry, but there are many different definitions of what constitutes a cult. There is also much variance in what characteristics are indicative of a cult. Howerver, they commonly have, at their base, characteristics such as: A charismatic leadership. Indoctrination of beliefs, practices, and "education". Establishment of tenets. Behaviour control, personal and social. Some forms of ritual practices. Idealistic thinking and beliefs. Devotion to the group, and its leader or higher power. Dissuasion of critical reasoning, or objection towards its tenets. There is much dissension and disagreement about whether established religions are cults. Much of this is cloaked in the derogatory connotation of the word "cult". It is often that connotation that is the basis of differentiation. The extreme and bizarre types of cults, with detrimental behaviours and practices, are more attention getting and tend to overshadow the similarities of cult and religion. The strong argument is that established religions all started out as cults. If one sets aside the derogatory aspect of the word cult, the similarities with religion are much more recognisable. And that, I think, is the basis for my original question.

You kick so much butt, Erika. You're my favorite youtuber and you are living the dream I wish I had followed in High School. I decided to go the route of being a History Educator, but my lifelong passions have been the evolutionary sciences. One day I hope to go back to college if I can ever afford it so I can pursue the passion of my youth.
Good luck to you... but, in the meantime, you still can make a big difference in education. Real history is important, too, especially considering what they're doing in Florida, Texas, and the like. Thanks for teaching!
I mean a middle point could always be the history of science and specifically the history of biology. Proper science history is kind of rare but also really cool, I recently enjoyed learning thermodynamics the way it was discoverd in the 19th century.
I’m hopeful for Emily because she wants evidence for her faith and when she has exposure to the truth, she will see the manipulation of children for what it is. I hope she will be in the lucky half of children raised by these cults.
Hey Erika I enjoy these YEC debunk videos lol. And I hear you on the frustration sometimes of waiting for other people to complete a project. I'm glad you're taking your time to be thorough with your field work video, and I look forward to seeing it.
I’m subscribed to you from 2 Years just for these creationist films. These are just hillarious to watch, I am an atheist culturally sikh guy from Bangalore india who has very few reference points of the bible and the Christian faith so it’s extra fun
Oh man a lot of this must make no sense to you at all. Like I'm an atheist but since I grew up in a Christian culture I am familiar with a lot of this stuff and like it probably still influences me somewhat, but I bet to you it just sounds completely nonsensical.
Was having no motivation to pack for my family vacation. Thank you for uploading this, I’m glad you’re overthinking this whole UA-cam thing I’m sure it’ll come out good either way
Yeah if your whole personality and life is built around intellectual honesty and being smart and expanding the knowledge and understanding of the human species when somebody calls you an idiot by asking you why you aren't tan I can see how that would be a pretty hard thing to take
They actually admitted kids that go to college learn new things! And they didn't need to thank those folks teaching these courses; they seem to make a tidy sum on them.
I really appreciate your dedication to making things digestible. Your early stuff made me feel dumb. Your new stuff makes me feel like I might get this stuff one day.
At 24:18 - 'tack' IS correct, it is related to the nautical term and is referencing the direction taken (possibly the ONLY correct thing in the quote!)
The fees for these classes amount to what parents spend on after school care and programs in general, in some cases a lot less; so it's easy for them to justify the money. So, it doesn't matter if it's swim classes, except a swim classes can actually save your life, or if it's gymnastics or soccer, may times parents are looking for something to keep their children busy and for glorified "babysitting". It's unfortunate that these parents choose this to put their trust and money and kids into... But they also believe the end of the planet is good because it means the second coming and a new planet to replace the one we are destroying. Their kids are damned already.
I so love your work! You are up there with the SGU and RealityCheck podcasts in the impact capacity, maybe even more. Well in my opinion, I really have NOOOOO clue what gets through to the fantasy and faith based….. but I find your work beautiful, I love that kids have someone like you to find when they keyword search the nonsense they are fed. 😂🤣
i think you do a smashing job presenting everything you do. it looks and sound very well researched and informed and i have been watching for a long time. keep up presenting on any topic as, in my humble opinion, you will make a video on anything just as good as on your educationaö speciality. you could do an hour on why custard is so brilliant and you will have researched the hell out of it and present it even better👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm tempted to watch that video on 'The terrible PRICE of Surrogacy', but I'm just going to assume it's something about how it doesn't make you a 'real mom' if you don't give traditional birth. Also eugenics. Also socialism. Also the gays.
Most of my friends are neurodivergent, highly intelligent nerds (no idea if you're ND, I'm not insinuating) , and I love their ramblings about science shit, and I love yours. It may not be "perfect", but there's something so lovely, so wholesome, about a young woman going off about science shit she's passionate about.
People don't really fall into "neurodivergent" and "neurotypical", because "typical" doesn't exist, if you look at all of humanity. For example, no human brain is good at understanding risk. We just don't have the circuitry for it. Even those who's expertise is risk have to use fairly complex tools to work with it. Does that mean that all humans are "neurodivergent" because we all share a mental inability? It's like "normal" - if you start talking to, and listening to, anyone you soon discover that they have some uncommon beliefs or behaviors. I have not met a real "normal" person in decades of knowing a wide variety of people.
@@nycbearffno offense but there's a huge difference between a portion of people having adhd or autism or things of that nature and all people not being capable of calculating risk. Clearly if no one is capable that IS the norm. Now I admit I get what ur trying to say but I think it's just wrong to throw away the fact that neurodivergance is very real.
@@jimmychaconas1314 Thank you. I have ADHD and pretty severe OCD, and yeah, most people don't....deal with that shit. My husband is on the Autistm spectrum, as is our child. I understand what they're trying to say, but it doesn't match up with lived experience of ND folks and masking. SO MUCH MASKING.
@@nycbearff The very point of using the terms “neurodivergent” and “neurotypical” is to bring attention to the fact that these distinctions are socially constructed and arbitrary, that's why the entire idea is called “neurodiversity”. No two humans have the exact same neurology however in any given culture some neurotypes will be normalized and accomedated for (hence they are neurotypical) while others will be ostracized and othered. This is similar to the idea in Queer liberation that sexuality and gender are socially constructed categories that wary from culture to culture, like how to the Romans and Greeks bisexuality was seen as the norm, hence why any form of ostracization is arbitrary. The basic point being that in both cases we can address discrimination and improve the lives of everyone by abandoning the ideas that create these arbitrary distinctions and instead seek to include everyone. Just like how we can make sure that marriage and adoption laws don't discriminate we can also update building codes to demand accessibility and change schools so they don't disadvantage those with conditions like Autism and ADHD. In doing so we will also improve the lives of the people considered the “norm” by giving them greater freedom and accessibility, if we stop upholding the gender binary then men won't feel ashamed about not being “manly” and everyone prefers it if class rooms are quiet and lack distractions.
i laughed when you so casually said you wanted us to be sad also, and then you dropped that perspective... i literally got choked up (emotional roller coaster, this vid lol); i want to say, i TRULY ADMIRE what you do, and your attitude - it is plainly obvious that not only are you passionate, but are a genuinely good person.
Architect Frank Gehry gave a lecture at my architecture school in the late 70s and as he was showing one of his designed residences he said. "It takes a long time to make something look simple." I have found this to be one of the great truths of life.
Not sure the words "creationist documentary" are really self-consistent. I could make a pretty strong case for that being an oxymoron. That said, I can understand that it is done as an act of deference and charity to the creationists' position.
@@joelpartee594 Well you drained all the intended humor out of that pretty quickly. I don't think it's so easy to say. *_Documentary:_*_ using pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject._ The idea of a factual report on a largely fictional topic, a report in which there are certain to be mistruths, half truths, distortions and outright lies fails to be factual and if it fails on factuality then it's also not really much of a report either.
@@thefunpolice Well in that case it's really just a bad documentary in the same way that The Daily Mail is still a newspaper even if they don't actually report factual news.

Even sadder is that his close circle will probably not see the indoctrination and will blame it on his education.
I hope his parents have the day they deserve
I have seen similar things happen - not as far as suicide, but certainly giving up any career options that require thought just to avoid the cognitive stress.
Hey, Erika:
Some of us are here for the academic papers, some of us are here to watch you bash YEC badthink, but all of us are here because we find you, personally, entertaining and informative.
Just be you. Short stuff is good, long stuff is good.
Agree! Agree! Agree!
Exactly this. Well said, my friend.
Yeah! I’m here for it all! Erika legitimately is the one who showed me how evolution is obviously real, and exposed me to science rather than the YEC homeschool textbooks I grew up with.
But a video like this is just so entertaining, I’m actually more likely to sit through it all haha

The good news is that belief in Creationism continues to decline, particularly among our youth. Your excellent talks help with this desirable result.
The problem with Creationism is the complete absence of a creator. You have to invent/imagine the creator yourself.
@@JamesRichardWiley It is a "tell" the way in which they give all these teleological arguments and arguments from design ....and then immediately conclude: JAYSUS!!!
Um, even if teleological arguments and arguments from design WERE sound and valid, the most those could prove is an impersonal force that somehow keeps everything together, which could be more like Allah, Brahma, or some other god, and certainly not the lily-white Aryan-race Jaysus these creationist clowns worship.
As much as I enjoy blow-back on YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM, I have to appeal to all sophisticated human beings in our modern age to recognize the utter and absolute failure of Secular Humanism, COSMIC Humanism, Marxist/ Communism, and all forms of Materialism and especially Scientific Materialism Worldviews to explain our existence and to provide a basis for human behaviors we all value as human beings! All these Worldviews lead to the 20th Century of Slaughter that resulted in 400 million deaths of mostly innocent human beings. Even the devoted Athiest Dr. Richard Dawkins has been forced to admit that Christianity has been a force for good and out of all the other religions choices is by far the best.
I teach WORLDVIEWS and despite the refusal of most people to recognize it, ALL PEOPLE including athiests have beliefs and Worldviews. I'll bet any amount of money that this VERY INTELLIGENT young BIOLOGY PhD Candidate has a Scientific Materialism Worldview and I can tell you it's one of most dangerous and shallow of the Worldviews to choose from. The more I watch creationists, the more similar to flat earthers they become.
One led to the other.
Flat earthers typically ARE creationists.
Flat earthers, chemtrailers, creationists and other quacks use the same type of arguments. They all pretend science is working hard to supress their nonsense. They are all conspiracy nutjobs while using the science they deny.
There's a HUGE overlap between the two groups.
I think she’ll be fine. We all thought, said and did stupid things when we were young. I get the feeling she’ll soon figure it out.
@@psychologicalprojectionist There’s a difference between thinking something silly, and being raised in a literal indoctrination cult.
"I am sensitive"

Thank you for normalizing that. I spend so much time apologizing for being shaken up by things. I wish people were better about that. It's not a character flaw. It's our "settings".
I love and appreciate this comment.

As a Christian who has spent the majority of their life reconciling faith and science i really appreciate this video. The lies of creationists and the like make me so mad because when people figure out they've been lied to and manipulated their whole life they lose faith all together and it doesnt have to be that way.

I love it when people hedge their language. It makes the certainty actually mean something. You know when they are 90% sure, or when they are 99.999% sure. Creationists on the other hand say that both anything above 50% is certain, and anything under 50% confidence means we have no idea whatsoever.
The indoctrination of the kids is really gross. They are not prepared to face reality
They also get to vote, and are taught to distrust science...theres a big political agenda behind the funding of these kind of disinformation schools, with the denial of climate science coming easily to people who have been told that 'mainstream science' cant be trusted.

The phrase "change tack" is actually correct in the context of changing course, method, approach, etc. I can't wait for your field work video!
For reference, "Tack" is how sails are set up on a sailboat. Changing tack is just a more involved form of steering or pulling on the reins.
Yes “Tack” is a word, not what was used in the video. Seems clear they meant “tact” as in a careful expression of an idea.
@@Nick-Nasti "Tact" does not mean "a careful expression of an idea". They correctly used the word "tack", meaning "a course or method of action".

I learned punctuation at the same time as I was learning singing, and playing woodwind instruments, so I am hyper-focused on making sure I use punctuation for phrasing and breathing!
There is a bit of creative license with punctuation. Choose what you feel reads best. 😊
I will use your comment as an example for applying punctuation as I described above:
This is going to be random, but I relate heavily to Emily.

I normally tan great, but I went down near Brazil and was in the sun for like maybe an hour with suntan lotion and my entire body was bright red and my shoulders were blistered, it was *HELL*. I legit couldn’t sleep for like 3 days. If I ever go back down I’m going to coat myself in sunscreen. I feel your pain.
Also I’m glad I’m not the only one who has the irresistible need to follow up “anything 2” with “electric boogaloo”
Tell me about it! I’m Black and live in NYC . I went to Barbados in spring and I couldn’t take the sun in Barbados for more than 15 minutes with sunscreen and it wasn’t that hot .
The weather was so pleasant that I turned off the air conditioning for the entire trip and opened the balcony door. But that sun .... wow!
The child abuse of "answers in genocide" is absolutely disgusting!
Child neglect is ok, but only if you do it for religious reasons! - A lot of US States
don't we all know? the best way to convince someone to join ur religion is by abusing them in its name 🤷
Emily's Testimonial "...and you put it in a way that kids would understand."
There's no fucking way this wasn't scripted/rehearsed at the behest of an adult. I don't think anybody talks about their own demographic like this.
Beat me by 1 minute!!! (Nice job... I like your tact while discussing tacking). 😊
@@26beegee
@@andersandersen6295 I was not at all worried about my safety - I was worried about hers - all alone in a foreign country? Not a good idea. Sadly, I know more about sexual assault (her greater risk) because my own daughter ended up killing herself because of the PTSD of being raped. That will hurt til the day I die. But, in the U.S. when just ringing a doorbell causes someone to fire a gun at you through the door without even opening it to see who it is that’s a problem!
"Because I don't want to... die." 🤣
100% correct on the sunscreen point. My wife (age 73) has had a couple skin cancers removed from her nose; there’s only so much anesthetic can do on the nose. Think about it.
My husband was 28 when he died of melanoma. SUNSCREEN, especially on children.
It’s always good to protect yourself from skin cancer!
The complainers can suck it!
Also as someone who works outdoors a lot “tanning” isn’t usually on the minds of people working hard on things.
And also I think that having polished videos is great but more off the cuff is also awesome I really appreciate when you are live on call in shows
Variety is pretty awesome
Respect for perfectionism in content. It’s hard, but it’s why I watch you. You are one of the rare few who understand how important it is to educate with care. Telling an untruth is worse than no video, and you’re always good about at the very least being truthful about your confidence in information and correcting when you’re wrong. Thank you for what you do.
When you mentioned how you were raised in a creation-based schooling program, it reminded me of my "Bob Jones University homeschooling" curriculum back in my middle-school/highschool days. I don't remember much from it, but I definitely remember them pushing the "young earth" and "intelligent design" ideas. Glad I was able to move on from that and unlearn their pseudoscience 😊 Love your videos! 😁 Keep it up! 🤘
It's so much worse than you remember
Yes! Use sunscreen! The love of my life died at 28 from melanoma. Please don't let your kids go out without sunscreen!
I'm so sorry for your loss, that's absolutely tragic 😿
But, But...

Creationists solved the heat problem, didn't they?...

Oh, wait, NO they DIDN'T!
I would definitely have to be careful... I'm used to being able to tell I'm about to get sun burnt
yep, hanging around at the surface of the water can actually magnify the sunlight, thats why watering plants must be done by watering the soil and not the actual plant, or the plant gets burned and dies if it is wet in the sun
Never give up the good fight. You're doing wonderful work and you've inspired me on more than one occasion to think of The poor people that are being deluded when I'm seething at the deluders. Thank you for what you do, Erika
The $50 materials fee is charged for the "free" kid as well as the first three. So the money still comes in, even though they graciously offer that free tuitions for large families. That is why its listed separately.😮💨
I love your voice! When i was pregnant i had a hard time falling asleep without background noise and id turn on your long videos and let your voice soothe me to sleep
Great work !
the pain on her face when she saw that little girl. i felt that.
Having lived in central Africa I can tell you that you never go out without a wide hat and long sleeves. You just don't.
Rock on!!!!
That teen was in the class because his parents looked through his search history and found the unthinkable... Joel Duff, Biologos, and yes, even Gutsick Gibbon.
I can imagine their horror if they had discovered that their kid was watching AronRa as well.

Pat Roy who teaches those ‘classes’ also created the jonathan park creationist audio dramas back in 2000-those were the genesis, if you will, of my journey with yec. I actually found your channel while deciding to get into some reading and learning about those and the culture that surrounds them, hoping to do some kind of project on them eventually
How is this not indoctrination into a cult?
Edit: Yep, you said it, Erica! 😆👍👍
Dohhhhh sowwy just seen your edit
The only reason most religions aren't cults is because the definition of cult specifical excludes them.
Same thing for ""domestic"" terrorists @@kyleward3914 . Interesting how loopholes are purposely created
@@kyleward3914 Sorry, but there are many different definitions of what constitutes a cult.
There is also much variance in what characteristics are indicative of a cult.
Howerver, they commonly have, at their base, characteristics such as:
A charismatic leadership.
@@johnrap7203 I guess to answer the original question, I would say it's absolutely indroctrination into a cult unless you define cult in such a way was to specifically exclude religion, which I have seen done before.
Your expression as Emily was talking says it all. Thanks for doing what you do and putting the real info out there for people to see.
Being a "perfectionist" about making sure your information & presentation are accurate, clear, & understandable to us non-scientists out here is exactly what makes your channel so good! I'd rather wait (with bated breath, of course!) a bit longer for a video if it means the level of quality will continue! 😁
With that and with what's happening in Florida right now, I'm starting to believe that being a conservative should be ground for the CPS to intervene.
1:53 yeah the incidence of skin cancer for archaeologists/paleontologists is scary high
Ice Age? Do they mean Ice Ages? You know, like more than one? Oh wait...they hardly have enough time to make an excuse for the most recent one.
I’m hopeful for Emily because she wants evidence for her faith and when she has exposure to the truth, she will see the manipulation of children for what it is. I hope she will be in the lucky half of children raised by these cults.
Hey Erika I enjoy these YEC debunk videos lol.

Not sure the words "creationist documentary" are really self-consistent. I could make a pretty strong case for that being an oxymoron.
That said, I can understand that it is done as an act of deference and charity to the creationists' position.
Documentary is just a genre, and a documentary that is full of lies should be called a documentary - to clarify that it is not creative fiction.

*_Documentary:_*_ using pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject._
The idea of a factual report on a largely fictional topic, a report in which there are certain to be mistruths, half truths, distortions and outright lies fails to be factual and if it fails on factuality then it's also not really much of a report either.
