      Also have recently been watching Apologists that turn up to debates and refuse to answer direct question. Instead they spout a load of logical gibberish to deflect, avoid answering direct questions and answer every question with a question. Then smugly make ad hominem attacks on the Theist for not following their pre-planned script. Many high profile Theists are truly horrible human beings, and the fact that they are not being disowned by the mainstream churches, is a good reason for the current decline of Western Christian churches.

      The forced smiles really fooled a lot of people, but the past few decades have let the mask slip pretty dang hard. The whole 'atheists are nasty' thing is part of the show they put on with each other. They pretend like they're the nice "godly" ones, but figurative jesus proverbial tap-dancing christ they've *_always_* been the worst examples of humanity. They don't use "bad words" but they will throw everything else at the people they hate, up to and including the _dictionary definition_ of the bad words they think are demonic.
      It's a trick I call the Politician's Lie. They won't call you stupid, because that would violate the rules of decorum; instead they'll say you're a _(adj) -having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense._ And the morons in the pews fall for it every time.
      Every cultist does it. And when they feel like they couldn't get away with it, or don't want to bother with putting on a show of being a good person anymore? "I'll pray for you." As if the recipient is just such a completely lost "soul" that only the direct intervention of an immortal magic man could possibly fix them. Whereas I'd simply say "You're not interested in the truth, you're a liar, I'm done wasting my time with you" and would be right, but that's _rude._
      You say "your side" so I assume you're a cultist yourself. Think real hard about how often you or the people around you do it. It's not a bug present only in creationists, it's a feature of cults in general. Even pyramid schemes do the 'forced niceness' show because they are functionally identical to cults. A con artist will tell you you're big and strong and handsome and brave to get on your good side and steal your wallet. Someone who says you're being an idiot is less likely to get close enough to rob you. Tough pill to swallow, but real medicine doesn't care about taste.

      @IKilledEarl Рік тому +18

      @@logitimate Considering the anti-Semitic dog whistles AIG is known to spout? No, in that sense, it's not odd. In the sense that you're describing? Yes, very much so.
      Yiddish is descended from Hebew, High German, and Aramaic and wasn't part of the Anglo-Saxon invasion as it developed after British settlement and in a completely different region of Europe. Anglo-Saxon isn't a language. Old English is the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxon Germanic tribes. While modern English in its most rudimentary form developed from Old English, almost 90% of Old English words are extinct after Latin, Nordic, and a bazillion other influences made it what it is today.
      A tiny portion of the population currently speaks Yiddish in the US (slightly larger globally). Although through media, several more common Yiddish words are known by non-Jews post WW2. That being said, their use is still rare and I fully expect AIG to know damn well where shyster comes from and don't believe for a nanosecond its use in this context is an accident.

    I have a minor jaw irregularity that my dentist has commented on. My jaw is slightly oversized for my skull, and I have very large molars and roots. Large enough that after having to have a tooth pulled, he asked if it could be kept for study as it was an exceptionally large example. I have also had my DNA examined due to a few genetic conditions I have, and in doing so I found I had a relatively large number of neanderthal DNA markers (over 5%). I am of West European ancestry, primarily German, Scottish, and Welsh. It is purely speculative, but an interesting idea to think that my jaw morphology may be due to some holdover from having a neanderthal somewhere far back in my family tree, as I had not heard of the retromolar gap before now. I would be interested to have my teeth and jaw examined in comparison to a neanderthal sample.

    Calvin in particular hit my radar recently with a video where he spoke on mutation and natural selection...and actually described them remarkably accurately, compared to the average apologist. He of course still proceeded to dismiss them for inane reasons, but I couldn't help but notice that the way he did it was kind of brilliant.
    He described Mutation accurately and honestly, and then went and claimed that pure randomness would never lead to advancements.
    He then described Natural Selection accurately and honestly, and then went and claimed that it couldn't ever produce anything new.
    He was also VERY careful to keep the talk of these two aspects of evolution separate, focusing wholly on one, "debunking" it, buffering time a bit, then focusing solely on the other. By doing it this way he very carefully avoids the problem that _should_ come from describing both of these things accurately: The realization that each one perfectly solves the problem he had with the other one. Natural selection doesn't produce new things, but mutation does. Mutation sounds like it's purely random, but natural selection says no to some mutations and allows others, thereby making it not random, and providing a neat upwards trend.
    By describing both of these terms accurately, Calvin puts his followers in a position where they can listen to a fully accurate description of how these two things work together, and think "yeah yeah, I've already heard this before...", rather than "wait, THAT'S what evolution claims?! This changes everything!" It's incredibly clever immunization.
    But in order to do this so well, and especially in this specific way, proves to anyone who knows better that Calvin is well-versed enough to fully understand evolution and the evidence for it....and still tries to tell people it's all a hoax. This places him firmly into the "definitive liar" camp with, in my estimate, over 98% certainty. Is there margin for error? Yes. But it's VERY slight.
    His approach in this video, which you rightfully called him out on, only serves to further indicate his knowing dishonesty, and you're right to call him out on the hypocrisy of his statement in this video.

      What could possibly account for that 2% hedge factor? I mean, how could Calvin be oblivious to his own clear intent? Heavy drinking? PCP abuse? Do you think he might be huffing paint or glue just before he gives a presentation? He doesn’t seem to be particularly impaired otherwise. It’s difficult for me to imagine what could cause such dramatic dissociation.

    • @riluna3695
      @riluna3695 Рік тому +3

      @@cswanson4476 I am always anywhere from slightly to freakishly modest in my estimations of things. I'll come up with a loose range of percents, and then always pick the single worst-looking value on that list for me, and go with that. That way I never oversell my case, nor give ammunition to those who might look at a range of 98% to 100% and say "See that 100%? She clearly can't even fathom the possibility that he isn't lying!", or whatever strawman misrepresentation they want to throw at me. Personally I refuse to ever claim 100% knowledge of _anything,_ even mathematical concepts (and I'm the math nerd, so that's saying something), and I basically treat "certain knowledge" as an asymptotic line that you can get infinitely close to but still never reach (see? math nerd :P)
      As for why I chose the range I did, I DO believe it's entirely possible for someone, be it Calvin or someone else, to say such things while fully believing them. It requires that person to be UTTERLY dedicated to espousing the exact same ideas they grew up with, exactly the same way they heard them, without giving them critical thought at any point, or else being very skilled at pushing nagging doubts to the back of their mind and saying they don't mean anything.
      It's a rare type of person who would go that far and not realize, but it isn't impossible. And I mean, I said it, didn't I? Calvin's explanation is beautifully crafted, whether by him or his sensei, to immunize people against the "eeeevil wickedness" of evolution. So someone who grew up with that as their vaccine against truth might go spreading the same virus of lies out later in life. Again, unlikely compared to him just being one of the liars himself, but not 0%. But also definitely less than 2%.
      So yeah, that was about everything that went through my head in the seconds before I typed out those three characters on my keyboard :P
      And now you know _entirely_ too much about what life in my head is like!

      Christianity is for most purposes just a label, it has no active enforcement power for the morals, so breaking them is merely an inconvenience if you feel bad about it. Any change becoming Christian MIGHT cause, are completely internal, it does not magically switch on a moral-gland in your brain of anything, thus the effect relies only on what you feel you need to do or can't possibly justify to yourself.
      That means on the other side also that once you get an excuse for lying, like being lead to believe that non christians do not deserve honesty as long as the lies will bring a few to god (or at least to pay the church), all bets are off. And "judeo christian values" (as in "creatively reinterpreting any part of the bible shared between Jews and Christians") are sadly capable of justifying a lot worse, from discriminating against "wretched" human beings (e.g. LGBT+ persons or "nonbelievers"/heathens) to domestic violence against children or spouses (spare the rod comes to mind and "the husband is the head of the house as Christ is the head of the church). We see that far too often when loud spoken Christian figure heads like the hatepreachers of the NIFB bunch are exposed as treating their family atrociously under the excuse that god wanted them to have total authority about the home (also see Kent Hovind smilingly telling the annecdote about brutally spanking Eric at the Dentist's office) and other self declared "avowed Christians" being caught in adultery, sex they usually disapprove of publically and all the other horrible things done by Christians without the least bit of bad conscience.
      Don't get me wrong, People that do not have faith or different faiths do act in similar ways also. You do not NEED to be Christian to commit such actions and i'm definitely just as mad as any child abuser, rapist or embezzler that is not of the Faith.
      But the hypocrisy of talking about the religion (or is it? "It's a personal relationship with god/Jesus" seems to be a big slogan for them) as holding moral high ground and nobody but them coming close to having any justified moral stances and then seeing them be so uninhibited for all the worst behavior in the world is truly galling and has thoroughly destroyed most of the respect i had left for the church and its flock that I had retained when leaving myself, now about 28 years ago.

    While watching this video, I can't help but think about how evident the emptiness behind creationism is. I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian family where we couldn't even discuss topics like this. Whenever I had questions, I was always given a vague scripture in response. It's probably what led me to break away from Christianity and all the fabricated notions ingrained in me 30 years later. I'm so grateful for content like this; it's like a glass of water in the desert.

    Well, except for the other 300 or so individuals they've found. But that's probably not important.

      Funny thing is, I don't like Darwin. I think he had a lot of problematic issues., including his cousin. YET, I accept evolution. Many of my heroes turned out to be problematic including Einstein and most Hollywood stars I loved. None of that effects science or art. Truth is truth.

    My boss asked what I was interested in and i told her i love learning about evolution and eapecially anthropology. She legit told me that Neanderthals were just really old humans whose faces just grew all weird from their advanced age. I was in shock because it was so stupid. I was like how do i tell my boss i just met how dumb that is without getting fired?

    Did you know that Linnaeus was thinking about the immutability of species, and that he decided that the thought that species aren't immutable was too blasphemous to publish? He talks about it in some of his letters.
    Edit: Not only were they doing slavery, they were using the Bible to justify it.
    Edit2 (There will be a lot of edits): According to wikipedia, the Ark has been discovered no less than thirteen times since 1904. It has already been found three times in the 21st century.

      Thank you for mentioning Linnaeus. Most magicalskydaddyologists jump right to Darwin and throw up a monkey to man diagram and skip over taxonomic classification existing prior to Darwin. You know, the folks who put similar plants and creatures in groups with similar plants and creatures like humans as primates.

      Another edit to make: it’s ark in this case, not arc. Understandable mistake. But yeah it’s been “found” so many times already, but they all happened to be false alarms! Amazing, that never happened with stuff like the Titanic

    I've seen some creationnists sites saying that dinosaurs are fake, and that we've never found a complete skeleton of dinosaur. For anyone a little aware of dinosaur paleontology, the amount of either ingorance or deliberate lies is staggering ^^

    • @thychozwart2451
      @thychozwart2451 2 місяці тому

      Technically they're correct. But only on the technicality that we haven't found a single full skeleton from a single specimen. The most complete ever found was Sue the Tyrannosaur who was 90% complete. Then again, we have more than one T-Rex (just like we have more than one Aus. afarensis) so we know what the other 10% looked like, unless Sue had like insane bone cancer in that 10% and it was unrecognizable because of it.

      @@thychozwart2451 We have complete skeletons of so many dinosaurs XD
      Like, Iguanodon, a lot of different hadrosaurs, Borealopelta, etc... There's so many different complete skeletons, I couldn't show them all ^^'
      The thing is, only paleontologists really hear about them, because the public is not very impressed by skeletons, they prefer the reconstructions ^^

    A new study came out further debunking the "Man the Hunter" hypothesis. Since you have expertise in evolutionary anthropology, what's your take on women's role in hunter-gatherer societies? Do you have any extra info about the roles of the sexes in the evolution of Homo sapiens (or genus Homo)? Is it a topic that interests you to learn more about since your Master's thesis was on sexual dimorphism in hominids(iirc)? What's your opinion on the current scientific consensus; do you think it is an area that deserves more research or do you consider it settled science?
    Could make for an interesting video and I'd love to hear your thoughts. P.S. Looking forward to more videos in your Rise and Reign of primates series :)
