Fun fact; if creationism was real, why on Earth (or Heaven) didn’t the all-knowing God just create perfect creatures? Why does evolution happen on an Earth controlled by the all-powerful God? Günther Bechly (of all people, because he knows so much better) has made this same argument about dragonflies. I specialize in dragonfly larvae and I can tell you that there is an overall similarity between the larva of Meganeura and modern Odonata, but seeing a well preserved fossil for the first time really blew me back. The recently found fossils show an aquatic predator allright, but if I found one now, I wouldn’t even recognize it as a dragonfly based on the many details that are just way off.

The dog one is my favorite, but just because it's such a great story how both humans and dogs increased both our potential because we both already had common traits....and I got a soft spot for doggys
This is not on topic but I'm super curious about your reaction to the 475k year old wooden structures recently discovered in Africa. Also a detail that appeared with the story indicates that this structure predates Homo Sapiens. Do we actually know that there were no Homo Sapiens 475k years ago?
The paper suggested that Homo heidelbergensis may have built a platform or a walkway in Zambia, not Homo sapiens. The most surprising thing is that the wood survived for so long in that environment, which is likely why we have had no prior indication that H.heidelbergensis had that level of technology. But it's not unexpected, because there is evidence that Homo erectus built dwellings in Europe and must have built rafts or canoes to reach islands in Asia, half a million years before then. To ignore that and assume that H. sapiens must have appeared 50% earlier than the currently supported date would be a little strange.
Imagine doing all the coursework up until your dissertation, and then just stopping. That's me. I say this to say, I get you right now. I hope you can consider us as your support group too. We are behind you. And...where exactly is that spot in the forest you mentioned? 😇
Another thing to debunk Young Earth Creationism is the fact that the light we see from the Sun now was generated as gamma radiation in the Sun's core on average 150000 to 200000 years ago. It loses energy traveling from core to photosphere being primarily visible light when it leaves the Sun.
21:54 This has been one of my go-to arguments against literalists since I deconverted. If they truly believe that the world was created by God, then the best source for God's intended message is through the natural processes that we can observe to take place. The only alternatives are that God is a deceiver or God didn't make the natural processes, both of which are extremely blasphemous assertions. YEC fails both scientifically and theologically.
As someone who did a PhD years ago, I’ll pass on what my advisors advised. Your primary job is your degree; give your course work, comps, and papers top priority. We can wait a little bit; your degree can’t. Go for it!
There is nothing funny about it. Eric has a lack of basic education. He literally has no idea what he's talking about. We all know his father's character and how he treated his wives. I guess Kent treated Eric the same way. Because for Kent, there is only one true path, and child abuse is part of it 😔 Thanks for your content though)
Do it! It always begins now, find ways to get rabidly and uncontrollably inspired now in order to drive yourself like a horse with a rocket strapped to it's back pulling a plywood stagecoach that someone bought at the dollar store. Nothing can stop you if you get rabidly inspired.
Eric Hovind is doing the same thing you are...finding the least effort thing to make a video on. He shows pictures of a creature that has changed, just not in clearly obvious ways. A schwing and a miss, Eric. You put more effort into every individual video than he has into his entire career of being willfully ignorant.
What do you mean, Eric's twitter is goofy? The whole family is a sad joke, unless it's dad and Matt who openly demand murder of anybody they don't like.
I wonder, is Eric one of those "Noah only needed to bring animal kinds on the ark" guys? Because if he is, I have to ask, how does he propose that a single mating pair of "cats", um, "evolved" into at least three different genera (tigers, cheetahs and domestic cats are currently classified as different genus) within 500 years of the supposed flood? Because we have artistic representations and even mummified remains of at least those three species of cats within that time.

Good luck Erika, you'll smash it! As a former medical student who foolishly took an additional anatomy elective I feel your pain! For months my social life involved occasional chats with lab techs, crying with fellow anatomy students, and quality time with the cadavers and specimins. Just a quick question here. Have you run across the "Organ of Zuckerkandle" yet, and what does it do? My spelling of that name may be a little off, and the spell checker gives no suggestions. When I saw the thumbnail, I was so close to thinking Gutsick Gibbon was going to review Eric’s recent debate with Inspiring Philosophy on whether evolution is compatible with the Bible! Even though that’s not her specialty! This was a fun dunking, though!
Keep up the good work and take care of yourself! The last few semesters before getting any degree are brutal, I can't even imagine the work that goes into a doctorate. We all just want you to be healthy and happy!
I put your mass extinction video on as background while I got some work done. I got absolutely nothing done, because the video was so gripping and engaging that I just couldn’t look away. It was so brilliant. I told to my partner that I had been distracted from work by an amazing Gutsick Gibbon video. They understood and wanted to watch it, too😸.
Good luck!
Eric Hovind is just goofy period.
how are horseshoe crabs 450 million years old, but horses are only 50 million years old?
Günther Bechly (of all people, because he knows so much better) has made this same argument about dragonflies. I specialize in dragonfly larvae and I can tell you that there is an overall similarity between the larva of Meganeura and modern Odonata, but seeing a well preserved fossil for the first time really blew me back. The recently found fossils show an aquatic predator allright, but if I found one now, I wouldn’t even recognize it as a dragonfly based on the many details that are just way off.
You are a damn badass Erica ❤
GG - hang in there, and have fun passing those pesky tests. I found something really gratifying about my own experience (40 years ago? Ouch!) when I could outsmart the tests. Not that I was always the victor. The rest of us can wait for your return, covered in the glory of successful intellectual combat.
I always learn something. You're an excellent instructor. Thank you!
Your mass extinction video was excellent and I shared it with friends and will watch it again. It made me also try to learn the closing song (1st. Gymnopedie) on the piano because it hit me so hard emotionally.
Ur mass exstinction vid is amazing....like mind blowingly well made...i turned all my friends who i thought were intelligent enough to grasp it on it!
@Gutsick, I sp[eeded up this video so you will have more time for your studies.
Dang, that is a lot! I'm glad you sound like you have a good support system and are taking steps to stay in a good mental state. My comps were different, but I remember myself and those around me really struggling with mental health during that time. Remember to be kind to yourself!
@bethanymatthews7936 - Maybe Ms Gibbon is just trying to impress us with a shiny new PhD merit badge! At least, I hope it gives those creationist twerps some pause when it takes her beyond the student level.
Me?
Not smart enough.
No memory to speak of.
Too flighty.
Easily distractible.
Lazy.
Too broke.
Otherwise, I would have 3 PhDs by now and the film would not have been called "Oppenheimer", but "Mossy!".
Debunks Hovind's horseshoe crab claim with a google search, but then decides she can do better and digs into some of the literature. Even during "low effort" content, Erika is 100% maximum no chill and I love it.
We look forward to the bigger mallet the updated YEC GG animation is going to need when you graduate. Our loss as you evolve is something I'm sure most of us a quite willing to endure. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of us rooting for you. Thanks GG.
Eric's twitter consists almost entirely in him saying something either dumb or mildy evil, people correcting him on it, and him never replying.
But he doesn't have to reply to the degenerate reprobates who have fallen by the wayside, because he knows that he has God on his side.
"'Cause Jesus he knows me, he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus, all my life..."
@@RichWoods23 For someone who has god on his side he keeps making his god look like a fool... It makes one wonder if this god is sadistic or just stupid.
@@RichWoods23 I have the power of god and anime on my side.
@@RichWoods23 = "I've been talking to Jesus, all my life..." - - - - - Which leads to alarmingly question just who is answering BACK?
i know
So to keep it short Eric made a claim in hopes that his audience won't look it up😒
"Im eating healthy and taking care of myself"
Ayyyy you go :D
"I have a place in the woods to tear off my clothes and run to if I need to scream at the moon"
Mood! :D
I don't understand the thumbnail. Does it mean that praying turns people into little green men?
You are brilliant. I have learned so much from your considerable knowledge and research. I feel your pain when ignorant idiots such as the Hovinds arrogantly claim complete none sense.
Growing up yec fundie , evolution was a dirty word
Girl we love you! You take your time and get what you need to done. We will be here when you get back! ❤ Wishing you so much luck! You are so smart and will do amazing!
3:03 lol. I legit watched that video like 6 times start to finish.
It’s got me all prepared for Netflix’s new show “Life on Our Planet”
That show completely skipped over human evolution. Absolute waste of time.
4:12 You mention scoring YEC content and criteria you use- you should do a YEC tier-ranking list for different YECs and YEC sources! Please? 🥺
I'm guessing there won't be any S-tier given the lack of accuracy lol.
Peeps, upvote if you want to see this!
Thank you. Good luck with your PHD.
SCHOOL FIRST then youtubes, but only if you take care of your self first, screw the algorithm, ^_^7
Creationist: If this crab is still a crab, then evolution isn't real!
Natural Selection: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Gibbon your drive is amazing! Putting many of us to shame and inspiring us all at once. You've got this all the way!
As a side note, your "Deadliest Pattern" video was the first of yours that I stumbled across. I clicked on it, guessing from the simple skull representations in the thumbnail that it would be something about aposematism or predatory tactics in nature. Boy was I pleasantly amazed at the actual scope of the content!
Your extinction video is by far one of my favorite videos that you've made. Information and production were top tier. Also, loved your first Skeptalk as a host! Hope everything with school goes well. Thanks for the amazing content.
The dog one is my favorite, but just because it's such a great story how both humans and dogs increased both our potential because we both already had common traits....and I got a soft spot for doggys
Found your channel thru the mass extinction video. It is indeed amazing. 11/10, HIGHLY recommend!
Because for Kent, there is only one true path, and child abuse is part of it 😔
Thanks for your content though)
your one of my inspirations, and a reason i want to get a marine biology degree
Now I'm imagining Erica in those Disney musical parody videos about being a doctoral student.
"You might like: Ken Ham, Ray Comfort, Answers in Genesis"
At least the suggestions are relevant.
Poor fellow really wants to follow into his daddy’s footsteps. Taking over the family business, grifting simpletons for their hard earned cash.
What do you mean, Eric's twitter is goofy? The whole family is a sad joke, unless it's dad and Matt who openly demand murder of anybody they don't like.
Your mass extinction video is EPIIIIIC! Bless you for making vids at all while you're working so hard!
You could’ve switched to the creationist side. Maybe less rigorous.
She has too much honor for that
I wonder, is Eric one of those "Noah only needed to bring animal kinds on the ark" guys? Because if he is, I have to ask, how does he propose that a single mating pair of "cats", um, "evolved" into at least three different genera (tigers, cheetahs and domestic cats are currently classified as different genus) within 500 years of the supposed flood? Because we have artistic representations and even mummified remains of at least those three species of cats within that time.
Also I've watched the mass extinction video SEVERAL times and plan to re-watch it lots more. :D
You got this. And wait, there were creatures 450 million ago? Isn't the earth 6k years old?
GG looks at her plate: hmm yes i could squeeeeeeze something else on here im sure just gotta.... move that around and .... squish that there, and...... do i really need this much sleep? nahhhh
for real tho, you go girl, truly inspiring to hear what you are managing all at once
The key is to take everything in moderation.
Except, of course, moderation itself.
Good luck Erika, you'll smash it! As a former medical student who foolishly took an additional anatomy elective I feel your pain!
For months my social life involved occasional chats with lab techs, crying with fellow anatomy students, and quality time with the cadavers and specimins.
Theres so much STUFF in the human body, as you say, and so many new words to learn - which is par for the course for both our fields, but drove me slightly insane at the time 😅
You know, academically speaking, I could use a goofy look at a goofy human's publicly available inner thoughts lol
It amazes me that you do this much effort for a low hanging fruit like Eric and you consider it 'low quality'.
Glad the deadliest pattern vid popped off, it was really good! Can't say I don't enjoy your lower effort content too though GG, take care of yourself
Your Deadliest Pattern video perfectly threaded the line between detail, summary, and entertainment. Def one of those vids I’m likely going to rewatch every 6 months or so. Really good stuff!
Seems like blatant falsehood runs in the family, and I mean how could it not.
I love that Erika is doing all of this hard work for her phd, and the YEC community thinks they know better than her😂
Good luck with your studies. I stopped psychology when I had to memorize all the regions in the brain and what chemicals they produced or reacted to, so nothing but admiration from me
Getting a PhD is akin to going through a hazing. Your advisors are doing to you what was done to them. You will be a better scholar at the end of the process, and then inflict the same pain on your students.
The Spongebob music killed me, and I had to go back and watch those parts because I was so distracted.
Just a quick question here. Have you run across the "Organ of Zuckerkandle" yet, and what does it do? My spelling of that name may be a little off, and the spell checker gives no suggestions. Edit: I first ran across this one in a "Star Trek" novel titled "Uhura's Song" if my memory is correct.
Glad to hear you are doing well on your studies, and I wish you all the best. Not least because I want to see many more videos on paleo anthropology from you. Your videos taking on YEC are also very entertaining.
So "the whole point" of Christianity is that it doesn't fit with evolution... yeah, that might explain why Eric has barely produced any content about theology, you know, the study of his own religion which he claims to love so much.
Sorry i won't watch your video on extinction it gives me anxiety 😅
I'll watch this one twice instead 🥺
Edit typo
eric hovind struggling to spell alligator whilst showing images of a crocodile is pretty on brand for him
