I've been working on writing my first sweater knitting pattern from a vintage cardigan I own for months - and it is finally here!! I had such a hard time with the anxiety of doing this well and making a pattern that is fun to knit and will fit, but we did it!!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

One of the reasons I watch your videos over other crafters (other than your obvious talent) is your relatability. Only downside to this quality is feeling so awful for you when you are so stressed!! I'm so happy you made your deadline and you did the thing you'd been putting off. You're very inspiring!

Testing = testing. I say this to you as i cant say it to myself. You don't have to be perfect at every step. You're not wasting your collegues time. The steps that are meant to catch things can catch things. Not you.
Congratulations on doing the thing!! Your hard work paid off!!

I have been loving knitting this up! It is so fun. As a first time test knitter I was feeling the anxiety on my end. Hopeing you wouldn't be disappointed in my contribution. You did such a good job of being so gracious and encouraging even when some of us were behind. You made the experiance such a joy. Thank you. Looking forward to test knitting for the next one! ;)

First of all- big congrats on publishing this pattern!
I've been test knitting this (I'm the one that had the bright blue sock yarn MC I was so close to running out of lol) and I gotta say I've not been disappointed by this experience at all, yarn chicken and needing to frog back included! It was my first time test knitting something but I figured the point is to work out the kinks in the pattern, so I knew going in I might need to rework the project at some point. I understand feeling anxious about issues coming up, but for me at least I had an absolute blast working on this cardigan and I can't wait to make another one day :) It's almost done blocking so I can't wait to take pictures of it tomorrow when I can get some natural light for the shots

You are so brave overcoming your fears! Remember: reople who signed up for the test knits did it because they LIKE you, SUPPORT you, and want to HELP! I am sure they know that you are still learning, and they want to be a part of this process of learning, with all the ups and downs along the way. Your anxiety is totally understandable, but look what a wonderful job you did! I had tears in my eyes when I watched the bit with the video call. What a great moment!

My engineer title may be prefixed with "software" but I think my knowledge still applies here - we test things to find where they're broken, not just to make sure they work. I go into the testing phase with the goal of finding the cracks and the bugs - I'm never expecting a perfect result. Pattern testing is the same.
I also have ADHD and the rejection-sensitive dysphoria that comes along with so I completely and utterly relate with how horrible it feels to feel like you've let people down :) even when logically you haven't but that never really matters because logic brain doesn't trump panic brain all of the time.

One of my favourite aspects of your channel is your willingness to explore and try. Even if it's a bit difficult, you still strive for that and I love that. I feel like so many people are trying to position themselves as experts online, and I enjoy seeing people be beginners. It's encouraging for me as a beginner too. Not even with textile arts (I'm below a beginner, haven't tried knitting!)

Congratulations! You work so hard. I'm sure your test knitters knew what they signed up for, and knew you would continue to work hard to make it a good pattern. (Also, the number of times I've literally had to turn my head away from my computer when clicking 'send' on comments and emails... oof. I felt that moment with you.)

I preordered the pattern and what a delightful gift to receive on the first day of December! So excited to knit this. It isn't in my immediate plans as I don't have stash yarn for it but it just means I get to luxuriate in the process of picking colours and yarns for it.
So proud of you for this! It's such an uncommon thing for vintage patterns to be anything close to size inclusive, and i'm so grateful that you fit in this niche of vintage knitting and are making more space for others to exist within it. It's also your first pattern, so even if there are a few kinks here and there, i'm sure many of us are more than willing to give you grace. Many people don't attempt this on their first proper pattern (unfortunately, but also understandably) so kudos to you for that!

Congratulations! You can't look at testing as a waste of the testers' time -- they knew it wasn't going to be perfect and they volunteered to help make it the best it could be. I'm a novelist and we do the same thing with first/beta readers. They're helping you get the most out of your editor's paid time. Now pass it along by volunteering for someone else.

I'm a bit too slow a knitter to have volunteered as a test knitter, but I have been following the videos to see how you are doing and to support you, congratulations on the launch of the pattern! I can see why it may have been difficult to get those sleeves and armhole right, making enough fabric for that sleeve to have that vintage puffed look, but to still be wearable today and trying to visualise how it will look at all the different sizes as well!😵‍💫 I know you were nervous, but you remained open to ideas and it sounds like you had wonderful support from your testers and tech editor and that makes such a difference.

I had the biggest oooohh-moment right now. The origins of "frogging" were known to me, but it took me three repeats to get that "tink" is not only the action "knitting backwards/un-knitting" but is also the word "knit" spelled backwards. Thanks for that enlightement, i guess thats part of being in a community speaking a non-native language. And congrats to your pattern and the journey behind!

I am an experienced knitter but have not really done resizing/grading much but have this friend who thinks I know everything and keeps giving me patterns she wants to knit, but a lot bigger than the existing pattern! I did one for her recently she is almost done with and amazing it is not looking too bad ( 6 sizes bigger than pattern) She will go fit it on the recipient soon and then we have to do the button band and a collar with lots of short rows. So I totally understand your anxiety! I really need to do a course in adjusting patterns so I actually know what I am doing!

Ah the dilemma.... I need to give myself a ridiculously short deadline so I will actually DO the thing vs I really should give myself a realistic deadline but that includes the risk of not actually doing the thing! 😂 and the frogging.... its kind of satisfying and sad at the same time isnt it? I'm about to frog an entire Victorian shawl I've just crocheted from an extant pattern cos its not big enough and doesn't actually keep me warm in the places I need when costuming. Good job I'm more about the process rather than the finished item. 😂 This yarn is way too expensive not to make into something else which is the main reason for not making it any bigger. Good luck with your feedback and sales.

  • @Historyofstitchery
    @Historyofstitchery 7 місяців тому

    1. I am in costuming, and this single dress I’m working has taken two Mock-ups already. Bodies are weird and jumping in between 2d and 3d is hard.
    2. My professor always says to never feel terrible about sleeves because it took humanity centuries (millennia even) to master inset sleeves. I can sort of draft inset sleeves. You know who couldn’t? Plato. I know more about sleeves than every Ancient Greek philosopher.
    3. I wouldn’t feel bad, because pattern testers presumably aren’t expecting perfect garments… they would not need to exist otherwise.

I haven't been a test knitter or written a pattern before -- is it typical to do the test knit at that point in the development process? Or so they usually happen later?

I think you did a wonderful job. Your anxiety means you care, but as an anxious person myself, I understand that the added pressure makes things harder to move forward. I've asked for a mid-gauge knitting machine for Christmas, and id love to try this when i get the hang of it. I'm dreaming of a cardigan in cream with multiple greens! The testers did a wonderful job and I loved looking at their color choices. Congrats on the launch!

Random nerdy fact for the day: there’s actually only one species of frog that makes a ribbit sound! All the others can squeak, whistle, click, scream, groan and many other noises!

Congratulations. What level of experience do you need for the pattern as a total novice knitter but would love to make this as it is so cute .

If you have someone experienced helping you then you and are prepared to rip back and won’t get upset with your own mistakes then go for it. But if you are tackling it on your own it’s probably not a great first project. But you can work up to it. You could just make a swatch of the pattern and see how you do. Get used to that and keep going until you can reliably make a flat swatch without the tension changing randomly. And you could make a separate sweater from a plain pattern to practice doing Increases, Decreases, putting in sleeves, ribbing etc and sewing it together. And perhaps then it might be easier to put it all together in this one. Just don’t eat the whole elephant at once by yourself. Either phone a friend or take small bites…..
