    I love the show Call the Midwife for many reasons - but one of my favorites is that they have wonderful vintage knitting and crocheting! I've even found some similar patterns, I think:

    Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

    I love this, so, keep going. I want to point out though that not every knitted or crocheted item is done so via a printed pattern. History is filled with very talented women, my mother being one of them, who knew garment construction basics and used it as a basis for creating their own designs not necessarily to share and, so, there’s not always going to be a pattern to find is what I’m saying.😊

      I agree. An elderly lady gave me all her wool and there were three unfinished garments which she was doing from intuition after years of knitting.

      Knitting a color work sweater as I watch from now on pattern, just make as I go. I did make a gauge swatch and a pattern stitch count repeat of 44 stitches.

    My grandma knitted a anatomical correct uterus for my aunt, who is a midwife. So the show was accurate. She used it to demonstrate stuff for her patients

    A book of knitting designs inspired by call the midwife would be the most amazing thing ! Please do a All creature's great and small series after !! Helen's sweaters are beautiful, but I haven't been able to find her lacy fern green sweater, a series inspired by that show would be a must watch !

    I definitely think that call the midwife need to release a knitting/crochet book for some of the items in the show. They released a cook book and I’m enjoying working my way through it. In a later season of ctm there is knitted bossoms that cause a bit of a giggle. Oh yes please on all creatures great and small but if possible the original series.

    • @bxstar5276

      Interesting idea. I worked on CTM a few days when I worked in film costume. Most of the items are sourced from costume rental houses. Some for the leads will be made from scratch. There is likely not many patterns avail and they would have to be made. It’s likely more costly to produce than what is viable. If you are in the UK you can do a tour of the costume house called Angels. You could see some items there.

    Such a lovely take on this series.
    Concerning the anatomically correct uterus it is still used by midwife’s today, since in the preparation classes it is the best way to show the birthing process.
    Funny fact I knit one for my midwife as a thank you and she still ushers it today

    I love this series. And an ACGAS series would be great. In the UK we call the colour of the yellow sweater mustard yellow. English mustard is hot, not sweet like US mustard and is that sort of colour, especially if it is mixed thickly from the powder, which it would be at the period of the series (ready mixed arrived much later).

    I recognise the tea cosy stitch. Vogue knitting calls it the Indian Cross stitch. And it's alternated with a couple rows of garter. I'd guess the green underneath is the same tea cosy shape knit in plain stockinette like the lining of a mitten, and joined at the top

    • @bhrfrd123
      @bhrfrd123 4 місяці тому

      I searched for images of that stitch and I think you are spot on. Although, I wonder if the cozy had a single crochet border around the top/edge.

      A version of the Indian Cross stitch is used in the JLocatelli "Hipster" shawl. The large holes in the cosy remind me of those in the shawl.

    I love this show, and the great knittings is the cherry on the cake 😂
    I also love Jacob's first vest, love the simple cables, I really need to try to find a similar pattern.
    I also often wondered about the costuming (especially the first seasons), for the knittings they look so vintage that I honestly think they are real vintage thrifted by the costume team.

    • @bonniecolleenpappin8807
      @bonniecolleenpappin8807 4 місяці тому +1

      To help you find this particular stitch for Jacob's vest, look for 'travelling stitches'. Not really a cable as the decorative stitches don't cross each other.

  • @resourcedragon
    @resourcedragon 4 місяці тому +4

    I wondered if the vertical elements in Jacob's vest were made using a slip stitch. My mother made a cardigan around 8 or 10 years later that created the vertical part of a chequered pattern by using slip stitches.
    Fred's vest looks handspun to me.
    I'd suggest that you keep the knitting from shows like Call the Midwife going at the rate of one a month - which will keep you going for a while. Along with Call the Midwife and All Creatures Great and Small, there is some very nice knitting in Foyle's War.

    Love his series. I would think that the checkered vest is stranded colorwork because the squares are quite small. It makes more sense to do stranded knitting than embroider all these vertical lines. By the way, one thing that's a bit of a pet peeve: fair isle is a very precise type of stranded knitting from the Fair Isle island. So the correct word for what you are wearing and the vest is actually stranded colorwork.

    This is such lovely content, I know that stitch from the outer layer on that tea cozy! It's on The Art of Knitting!

    I wouldn't be surprised if the background is a simple garter stitch, sewn together and sewn at the sides with a slot for the spout.

    Oh my goodness - men's knitted vests! That took me back. I learned how to knit in the early 60's and still have a free Coats & Clarks Red Heart Yarn flyer with about 8 different knitting patterns. One was a men's vest with two cable panels running up the front and I did knit one for my dad. As an aside, the last pattern in the flyer was a knitted octopus - essentially a round stuffed head with braided yarn legs.

    It's possible that the sources for costumes may have been second-hand shops. There's an exhibition on at the moment at the Museum of London which includes a character from EastEnders' well-known coat and notes that it was bought from a local charity shop. I suspect that either that is true here too, or that it's general costumes archive.

    What you can also do for the vertical stripes is purling thise stripes whole knitting up your piece and after finishing you crochet those vertical stripes to fill the vertical preboliously purled spaces.
    They use this method for a vest in the book tartan knits.

    I think that tea cozy pattern is made with hairpin crochet in horizontal stripes. A similar sort of pattern can be seen a youtube tutorial called 'Way to Develop Hairpin Crochet Strip' by Crochet ElenaRugal Studio. There are ways to interlink the loops more as seen on this tea cosy white pattern overlaying the green. A lovely little puzzle to figure out.

    So I think part of the tea cozy is crocheted. The top green edging on the ruffle looks like sc and around the edge opening around the spout. I agree, the white part looks like broomstick lace. It’s possible the rest of the green could be crocheted? The crocheted scarf looks like some sort of alternating sc or dc pattern but without a better close up I can’t tell for sure.

    I have definitely seen crochet lace patterns like that tea cosy! It's made sort of like pineapples with the strands of chains but has a box in the middle instead of the pineapple. Oh I have come across the knit pattern they're suggesting it could be. It seems feasible this could be the pattern, but I know I've definitely seen crochet like this, too! Here's the knit pattern
      Instructions
      Cast on 36sts, you will work 3 sts border each side
      Row 1: knit
      Row 2: knit
      Row 3: knit
      Row 4: k3, *introduce needle on next stitch as you going to knit, 3yo, knit carrying the yarn overs, repeat from* to 3 sts, k3
      Row 5: k3, *dropping wraps, pass 6 sts from left to right needle, introduce right needle on 4th, 5th and 6th long wraps of left needle and pass them over first long wraps, bring all 6 long wraps to left needle again and knit one by one, repeat from* to last 3 sts, k3
      Repeat row 1 to 5

    Looking at that zoomed in picture of the second vest I started wondering whether that's not all over colourwork. The horizontal black lines aren't all black, but have white stiches at the crossings and the patterns seems small enough that it wouldn't be TOO bad to strand behind the white squares (that seem to have some kid of texture to them too?). And the one white row has a black stitches at the crossings. Of course the intersections of the lines switching the colours could be done with mosaic knitting too. And I agree that (as far as I can tell from the video images) it does seem like the vertical black might be embroidered.

      The one serious problem I have with Call the Midwife is how rarely they mention the people who have left. Jennifer Worth kept in touch with the rest of her colleagues for years, in some cases the rest of their lives. Would it be so hard to have the characters mention I got a letter from so-and-so or we had a lovely visit on my day off etc?

    Still a smidge baffled that you're not calling this series "call the knitwife"
    I love it anyway, though!!

    Why not support your local public television network so you have access to PASSPORT which lets you watch British shows like All Creatures Great and Small?
