  • We spent the last month knitting a vintage capsule wardrobe out of 4 pieces. Now it is finally time to put all of the outfits to the test. What do you all think, do all of these outfits count as separate outfits?

Adding on a cardigan might not look like a different outfit to our modern eyes, but we need to recall that wardrobes back then weren’t quite so voluminous!
If adding only one outer piece changes the vibe/silhouette of the look, that was a new outfit!

These turned out so good! The skirt reads very teal on video so your outfit with red sweater didn't read a christmasy at all. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you!

To the query of "is it a different outfit if I just change one thing?" -- remember that men's fashion permits the re-wearing of the same suit with a different shirt and tie, sooooo by that logic the addition of some accessories should allow it to be a unique outfit. I personally will wear the same bulky items (eg, sweaters, sweatshirts) repeatedly with a different tee/undershirt and jewelry. I think the knit capsule wardrobe is so nice - and I'm really glad to have seen the whole development process. My personal favorite outfit was the slacks + vest + shirt, possibly because I'm partial to androgynous fashion. That said, I've been inspired to machine knit a skirt!

The wardrobe turned out great! As for the deathly pallor, at least it wasn't due to continued poor health. I call my sunscreen look 'Kabuki face'. Of course in the 1940s repeating outfits or pieces was much more typical, so maybe adding an extra item did feel like a new look?

I think if you were to choose different color or style button-up, and also omitting the vest, to go with the outfits they would feel more like a new outfit. I love the last look the best, and think the red and green look very appealing together, I don't get christmas from it at all.

For the Wednesday outfit leaving the vest off might be an option, so blouse, skirt and cardigan.

I think there was an article that came about saying when tennis players were asked to grunt during their serves, they served 5% faster than when asked to stay silent. The conclusion is that making the sexy "HNNNNNGH" noises when you get up or down makes you more powerful 🏋‍♀

I loved seeing all these different variations using the same pieces! I definitely need to make myself a 1940’s skirt to wear. It looks so comfy! I am the type of person who always dresses a bit nicely even when I’m just at home so having comfortable and nice clothes are definitely something I’m always striving towards.

It was fun to watch and thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
I recently posted on FB what the average middle class 1947 wardrobe size was. Everyone was shocked by how small it was. It was 2-3 each of house dresses, day dresses, blouses, skirts, and sweaters. 4-5 panties and 1-2 bras plus stockings. By today's standards, this would be a seriously bare bones capsule wardrobe
I really loved the knits you made. I can't knit because of the arthritis in my hands and my attempts at knitting were awful. I am interested in a knitting machine. Although teal isn't something I would ever choose or wear, I loved the skirt and vest the most. Next was the jacket. Perhaps I will finally find someone to knit for me.

I admire that you tried so hard to keep to the script! I'm sorry you got sick in the middle, though. To answer some of your questions: No, I don't think the red sweater and green skirt look Xmassy, especially in October. They just look autumnal to me. I'm on the fence about whether just adding the cardigan makes a whole new outfit. It definitely changes the look, but if you were in a setting like an office where the same people saw you each day, I think they'd notice the repeat, especially if you took the cardigan off during the day. I was surprised that skirt/blouse/cardi without the vest wasn't an option. One more blouse in pink or black or a vintage print would add a lot of versatility. As for my favorite outfit...so hard to choose. The pieces work so, so well together that each combo is sweet! I love the crispness of the white eyelet blouse under the vest, but also the standalone perfection of the turtleneck. The skirt looked more comfy than the trousers because I'm a skirt gal myself. All in all, an excellent capsule. 15/10 Would Recommend!

I know you didn't like the striping of the skirt and sleeveless jumper but I think it looks really nice! Especially when they're worn together, like at the beginning of the week. I also think that the wool for them reads more on the blue side than on the green side, so that coupled with the more purple-ish undertone of the red makes the combination not read as Christmas at all, and they go really well together. As for whether adding the cardigan/jacket is a different outfit, I think I'd call it a different look but not really a different outfit? The jacket does alter the look pretty significantly though, with the shape and colour change, so maybe that's the goal (or just good enough) historically.

I feel you, red and green does make me think christmas because those complementary colors are so iconic to the holiday. BUT, I myself, want to not loose that color combo to the holiday so I say the more people that wear it, the more it can be pulled away from the holiday. Let's do it!

Yeah, I'm firmly in camp "adding a warmth layer doesn't make it a different outfit" but that may be because I have temperature control issues so I have to regulate my body through clothes. It looks different to others though, so I can see where they're coming from. I've just solved that by being the kind of person that rewears clothes and has a confusing number of duplicates anyway. Is it the same black tank top and jeans? A slightly different one? Have fun figuring that out 😂

This makes me think of the rule the late queen of England had where royal women were not allowed to take off their coat in public, regardless of changing weather or going in and out of buildings...if you left the house in a coat you're wearing it until you're back home. (Apparently the suggestion that any layer of clothing, even the very outermost, was something which could be removed was just too spicy...)
If you dress like that then definitely adding an outer layer counts as a new outfit.
For myself, I am less certain... I think if I can remove a layer and still feel dressed then adding it doesn't constitute a new outfit, mostly because I'll probably remove it sooner rather than later.

All these outfits look so good and no, you don’t look christmassy in the skirt and sweater but accessorize it and you could have a very classy Christmas outfit if you want.
Also, I absolutely love the stripes on the skirt and vest it adds a great texture to the pieces !

I was visiting my aunt in Oakland during that heat wave. My son was getting married in Sacramento, but had to move the wedding inside because it was 95! Agh! I miss living in the Bay area, but all my relatives are there. SF had changed so much, and gotten kind of icky. My cousin lives in Half Moon Bay--I would never leave if I lived there or Santa Cruz again! Love all those sweaters--they should be great once you get into the cold and rain.

I grew up in the Bay Area and I went to college in San Francisco. It’s always hot in October until the very end. And this year was warmer than most I would say. I love how this all came out and I actually really love the red and green outfit, I think the red is dark enough that it doesn’t look like a Christmas ensemble. ❤

As a stay at home wife in modern society, I often wear the same going out clothes multiple days in a week and often several days in a row. When my children were small I'd wear house clothes and unless we went somewhere like the grocery, running other errands, or other outings "for good" clothes weren't needed every day.
Those person experiences aside I think a true interpretation of the capsule wardrobe one might build up to a couple different choices of tops and pullovers that all coordinate with the bottoms. your experiment was for sure the most basic of wardrobe but probably not uncommon for the time. It is fairly modern thinking that you wear different outfit each day. These are also my thoughts as a 50 year old woman recalling my grandparents and their habits of fashion.
    I love all you content

Loved seeing the whole capsule put together! Wednesday's outfit of the vest, skirt, and jacket/cardigan was definitely my favorite! I kind of agree with you that just throwing the jacket/cardigan over another outfit doesn't feel like a whole new outfit. I think that if you removed the vest and just had the blouse under the jacket, it would change the look enough to count as a new outfit though! Oh, or maybe changing the blouse out for a dickey collar with a different collar shape or embroidery!

I love that shade of teal! And I don't think it looks particularly Christmassy with the red.

I find it interesting to hear what people dislike/like the most of the house chores. It varies so very much. I do not generally use the tumble dryer, I hang laundry to dry, so for me I fold each piece as I take it down from the line. Migth or migth not improve your experience, for me merging two steps makes the thing less annoying. And that skirt is beautiful! So are the other garments, but the skirt is just perfect.

As a cold-blooded person, I would not consider adding a cardigan making a new outfit, because I would be wearing it everyday regardless. I'm a bit surprised there wasn't a look skirt/pants with blouse and cardigan but no vest in that guide. That would definitely work as an additional outfit to change things up.
I wish I had the patience to knit myself some clothes. They just look so comfy!

I really loved watching this series! All the outfits look so so good. If you want another combo or two you could wear the cardigan with the white shirt without the vest.
I know the point of a capsule wardrobe is to have lots of different options from as few pieces as possible, but I've been having so much fun thinking about adding one or two more pieces to give even more outfit possibilities. Making a second sweater maybe in a nice neutral with the other neckline option and longer or shorter sleeves would give you another two or three outfits. You could also make a second skirt with a different texture/stitch pattern, or sew a second pair of trousers in a different colour. What fun! I'm feeling very inspired.

I enjoyed this, thank you for sharing it with us! I'm always impressed by how much work you put into your videos.
With regard to what counts as a different outfit, I wonder if the current sense that putting a cardigan over an outfit doesn't turn it into a second complete outfit is a function of having so many more clothes at our fingertips from fast fashion? although I find it funny how even now, people will post about capsule wardrobes, and the same dress with different shoes and/or different jewelry will count as 2 outfits, which I don't necessarily see as different outfits either. Or conversely, I wonder how much the "7 different outfits!" even at the time was rhetoric to market the patterns, rather than reflective of what everyone at the time would have thought?
I was almost sweating in sympathy alongside you wearing the full wool outfit in 96 degrees - I know wool is very temperature-regulating and all that, but I'd have just melted away wearing the wool rollneck and skirt outside in that heat! I know SmartWool does merino workout gear, which is suppose to be lovely, but I'd need tissue-light wool forW 96F. The plus side must be that it doesn't hold odor the way so many synthetic fabrics do.
Hope you've fully recovered by now!

I think having a couple of more cotton blouses would be needed. Sleeveless and long sleeve. Definitely dress to the weather and chore. And I think about the dog's nails snagging on knit fabric. Hope you are feeling better. Super episode. So much in it. I grew up in the fifties. Monday laundry, Saturday cleaning. My mom finally started wearing trousers in the mid sixties.

I think that the green in the skirt is more of a grey-green than a true christmassy deep green? At least on the video it is!
I really want to make my own mixed set now - if only to plan a few pieces to EXPLICITLY go together so there is more mix and matchability. It could also let me thinking about maybe sewing a blouse and skirt to go with it (as much as I wear jeans - I am not a trousers gal).
    Love this!

I suspected that you were either still sick or getting sick on Tuesday. There’s definitely a tedious relapsing cold going around the Bay Area this fall. I admire how you paced yourself as much as you could and didn’t feel obligated to film will actively sick.
I think people might have looked twice at anyone wearing warm wool on that particular week. Or maybe they were considering knocking you over and stealing your shoes.
I think the answer to the question “does this qualify as a different outfit” depends on when the question was being asked. In the 40, people’s wardrobes we’re exponentially smaller than ours now. Also, I suspect that a different colored blouse may have made a big difference.
Finally, the photo click sound was probably made when the shutter mechanism snapped shut after letting light onto the film’s surface. Which means that hopefully your portrait of Nutella won’t be too blurry.
And finally, your knitting is lovely, and you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished.

These outfits looked beautiful. In England (not sure about usa) in the 40s there was rationing on clothing, so limited options was definitely a thing. In fact my mum had to borrow her wedding dress as she couldn't get enough clothing coupons for a new wedding dress. She also used to set her hair weekly.

Also, I agree that the outfits put together in the pattern book don’t really work for a full, continuous week by just adding the cardigan/jacket, BUT I wonder if you threw one era appropriate dress into the mix, if that could get you through the full week with layering as well? Either a sleeveless dress you could layer the red sweater over/under and wear the cardigan over and wear the white shirt under, or a short- to ¾-sleeve length dress that you could layer the vest or cardigan over? That one simple piece could easily get you a few extra days!

My parents married in 1944. My mom had two dresses to her name. She’d wear one and wash the other out in a sink and hang dry it. She worked and just alternated them. Dad was in college, so money was tight.

I don't think the red and green look Christmas inspired. 😊 Looks so comfy and cute. I loved this video. So fun!
I also agree that putting the sweater over doesn't count as a new outfit. Imagine if this was actually your capsule wardrobe and that's all you had to choose from. I think you need a few more pieces for that. But it was ok for 1 week

I looove all the outfits!! Especially the skirt, it flows so beautifully. And the stripes look 100% like the were intended!
Over here (Bavaria, Germany) we start having gingerbread and other Christmas sweets in store September 1st. When school kids’ summer break isn’t over until September 11th!

Love the capsule wardrobe! I really love the burgundy and the teal together.
Re: the camera usage -- that "pull your elbows into your ribs" stance is pretty true for any film camera. On average the shutter speed is 125th of a second, so pretty fast, but still slow enough for blur if you don't hold still.

Mid-way through watching your video, I finally felt like picking up an old knitting project and working on it. Fall temperatures just happened today for the first time with the help of a couple of seriously heavy rain showers. I am also looking at the heavy-duty older Singer sewing machine that I picked up with its large cabinet and electric machine lift for $100 from a former seamstress. Perfect condition. About time I used it to make sew some clothes and curtains. I wish I knew where to get wool doubleknit like I used to sew in the 1960's - 70's.

For me wearing a skirt/pants with a button up shirt and vest is a different outfit to a skirt/pants and button up shirt and cardigan. Adding a cardigan on top of a vest seems like a change in temperature, or spending time outside vs spending time inside. This view is also from someone who is constantly wearing light layers as I change how hot/cold my body is through the day and back again. The tea pot and cup brooch is cute 😊

I so get you, I've been sick since the end of September with lots of ups and downs.... I still wake up coughing in the morning! :(
Anyways, I loved this final capsule wardrobe video! I don't know either if throwing a jacket on counts as a different outfit, to me it counts as a slightly colder day! So depending on the weather, that could be a full week's wardrobe, or not!
I really look forward to what is coming in the next videos!

You do have a little one, your furry baby! Lol my husband would tell his friends if they ask about our kids and he tell them that he still had a little one not in school yet. Our doggy Pickles, since our three kids had left and on their own and we were empty nesters he focused on our dog and spoiled him rotten.

Yeah, seasons in California don't work like they do else ware! Sorry no one warned you! We get summer weather in April-May and September-October, Fall weather is June-August, and rain is November though April. But the whole set looks awesome! I hope you get to wear it more into winter. 💜

It's not Christmassy at all! The green shades teal and the red burgundy. And both look great on you!
The cardigan pattern is adorable. But I'd call it a variant rather than a whole new outfit.

I’m a couple hours north of you, and I never bother with fall clothing until the third week of October. It’s insane that it was that hot in San Francisco this year.

I'm kind of inspired to try wearing only stuff I've made for a week... work pants excepted because I'm not yet of a skill level where I'm comfortable making something as complicated as a pair of trousers that's going to get destroyed, nor do I think I can make them as sturdy as the ones I buy... though I think before I do so, I do need to make the cotton fleece pants I've been contemplating (they'll be yoga pants or sweat pants with pocketses). And maybe turn that linen into a walking skirt.
And no, that combination didn't look Xmassy at all, there was enough blue in the skirt, at least on my screen.

The skirt looks almost blue to me so, not Christmassy at all !
I do think adding the cardigan makes the outfit very different so, counts for a new one
