Merriam-Webster says differently. "... 'further' dominates when there is no sense of distance and as a sentence adverb, but both 'farther' and 'further' are in flourishing use whenever spatial, temporal, or metaphorical distance is involved" (MWDEU). On that basis, both are fine, in both of the examples.
Ray Girvan no further discussion i got it.
When I looked it up, it said you can also use "further" for physical distance ("three miles further"). They're treated equally as comparatives of "far" except in some expressions like "Further, we will have to [do such and such]."
I am finding these videos extremely useful: they're very clearly explained and easy to remember.
When you refer to the distinction of both words in Merriam-Webster, in 1906, were you referring to the specific distinction mentioned in the video, or any distinction?
Thanks Alex, i got it. You are such an amazing teacher!!!
That's very kind. Thanks, Mohammed.

It would be great if you make a video about countable nouns which are usually used in the plural form. pants, scissors, sunglasses, noodles, ...etc.
Hi Alan can I use "going to" instead of "will" in this case?

You are right about the use of "farther", but "further" could actually be used in both situations.

Micheal Swan in Practical English Usage, OUP second edition, writes: "We use both farther and further to talk about distance. There is no difference in meaning". (page 199)
Dear Mr Leng....firstly I much enjoyed your video..i was wondering if you could settle a bet for me please ??.
If you said this race horse has everything in its favour..the trip the ground and this useful little claiming rider takes a further 5lb' off....is that ok ??.my friend says the word further is superfluous as no weight has been taken off before.. I say it's ok because he's talking in a furthermore sense and further can also mean moreso and additional.
Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Nice job.
Thank you, so much! 😘
Hi, thanks for the explanation. As a British English speaker, I don't make a distinction between the two - everything is 'further'. (Pre-1906 English!)
Helped great! Thank u

please help me.
1:30 Alex says "you have probably ***". I cannot understand what words Alex says after probably. Thanks. In my opinion this word is to guess but i'm not sure.
thanks its so useful 😁😁😁😁
Before your vid i didn't even know about farther never used it...thanks!
Thnks sir
Now i am clear about it
The way I remember the difference between the two: take the word "farther" which sounds like the word "father" and in the Biblical story "The Prodigal Son" the FATHER runs to the son, which is a physical distance. Therefore, "farther" is for physical distance. I only need to remember that, since "further" is automaticaly the other use -- for figurative distance.
Thank you.
thank you
