I believe there is a consistent rule, you use THE when you're referring to a country AS a group of islands, like the PhilippineS, the BahamaS, but if the country name stays singular, despite is also made of a group of islands, you don't use any article (like Malaysia)

growing up in new york city, I've always wondered why the borough that's known as "the Bronx" has a "the" in it and the other boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island) do not. Any history on this?

I think you should add the rule III for countries: "The countries whose name looks likes in plural require "The"", e.g. the Netherland*s*, the Bahama*s*, etc.))

Nice lesson! Well explained. But Malaysia isn't exactly a group of island. It is mainly a peninsula coupled with a few other states on its east. Perhaps a better example would be Indonesia. The country with the most number of island. Ok ok, I'm being pedantic.I'll stop now.

Actually there are 3 possibly right answers for the number of continents. It is up to your educational background. From where I'm from, we are taught to know that there are 7 continents: North America, South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia (Oceania), Europe, and Asia. And furthermore, this is the most commonly accepted number of continents.
