This gem comes from the 1973 film Hitler: The Last Ten Days starring Alec Guinness. Guinness is more famous for his portrayal as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan: “Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil! You must believe me!”
Anakin: “Why should I believe you? YOU’RE HITLER!”
Well then you are lost!
Padme: Anakin dose have a point obi-wan hitler
Prepare to enter... the Scary Door.
Only my Storm Troopers are so accurate.
Thank you, Fegelein Skywalker.
"Adolf Hitler. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time."
- Some dirt poor argentinian farmer circa 1957
So this is what Obiwan Kenobi was doing during his exile
Stalin: "Your powers are weak old man"
Hitler: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine"
Obiwan Kenazi
Field Marshal Mannerheim of Finland deliberately smoked a cigar in front of Hitler at a meeting they had. He knew Hitler hated smoking, so he did it to see if Hitler would object to it. When Hitler did not not object, he knew that Hitler must really need co-operation from Finland, so he had leverage in the negotiations.
At the end of this movie when Hitler is dead everyone in the bunker just quietly thakes out a cigar or cigarette and starts smoking.
CHAD (Mannerheim)
At last a good comment in a sea of stupid Star Wars comments..Thank you for not stooping to finding wit in Sir Alec’s performance and adding yet another Star Wars crack in view of this great and well researched movie..
These are not the Jews you're looking for
Why would Jedi master hitler say that tho.
*Jewa
Not even the younglings survived.
You're only a master of Jews Darth.
Disgusting comment and offensive to those of Jewish heritage that were murdered at the hands of the Nazis..This was a serious film about a serious time and you choose show how low you are by some stupid joke..Shame on you..
For all you Star Wars fans out their Fegelein was played by General Veers (Julian Glover).
cripplehawk FEGELIEN!!!!! FEGELIEN!!!!!
Bringen sie mir Fegelein. Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein!
Or Grand Maester Pycelle.
fegelein commanding the AT-AT
Damn, Fegelein was an Imperial too? The man sure gets around!
Ironic that Obi-Wan is his best known role, yet he disliked it them most.
Well its a kids movie and he was a serious actor. At least he still did it professionally even tho he didnt like it.
After losing the war, Hitler went to Tattoine and became a Jedi changing his name to Kenobi
Your lack of faith disturbs me Fegelein.
That's no moon. That's a Panzer.
Adolf Kenobi
Best resemblance: Alec Guinness. Best performance: Bruno Ganz.
Adolf Kenobi to Luke Aryanwalker: Use the blitz
General Veers (Actor playing Fegellin) giving Obi-Wan a little birthday gift
There's something unsettling about this accent coming from Hitler.
That same voice said Hello there and I know him He's me
Palpatine: “Here is the definite proof that Jedi are Nazis and Order 66 was in fact a special military operation to deNazify the Republic.”
@@zephyr8072Palputin* 😆
"Fuhrer Kenobi"
Alex is one of my favorite actors. I could listen to him read the phone book. He was a classy guy.
1:57 FEGELEIN!!
It's an interesting portrayal, perhaps capturing Hitler in a lighter mood. He certainly shares Hitler's optimism. But Guinness is far too warm, too balanced, to be cast in this role. It doesn't quite come off. Hopkins was better in the 1981 movie, but none of them can compare to the magnificent performance by Hugo Ganz in the Downfall.
I agree. Hugo Ganz was the best Hitler portrayal ever. It's a pity that his performance is undermined by all the out of control internet spoof videos.
Absolutely right, but his name is Bruno Ganz.
JasonJason210 I think he was cast mostely for his looks. He has an extreme resemblance to Hitler, he just looks happier somehow xD
@@GetToDaChoppa-k5r You should thank the internet that the movie became popular
With all respect to Alec Guinnes and him travelling the unknown path (he was first western "serious" take on Hitler) his performance is difficult to take seriously after Bruno Ganz and "Untergang". I'd say this is how war-propaganda would've imagined Hitler was and "Untergang" is what closer to reality what he really was like.
Obi wan Kenobi. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...
Their deadly weapon was the high ground
"It is good fortune for the government that the masses don't think, otherwise human society as we know it might cease to exist." WTF! at the end.
Only Alec Guiness could say that, and still seem harmless.
that makes sense though
I fear many elected officials in office today agree with him on that point.
Alec Guiness was the first actor I saw portray Hitler, and until I saw Downfall, the best. He's still incredible in the role.
His best hideout role in our galaxy. No wonder the empire could not locate him!
Let's just say he'd like to avoid any Russian entanglements!
The Guy that played Fegelein was also in Star Wars (The Empire Strikes back) as General Veers. He would later play the villian Donovan in Indiana Jones and the last Crusades.
Ironically, Thomas Kretchmann plays a German officer in Indiana Jones and the Dials of Destiny
Adolf Kenobi can now help Luke naziwalker to fight the The Galactic Empire
awww look at him. He's so polite, totally adorable and funny. but he forgot one candle.
Obi Wan: The Soviets march in single file to hide their numbers.
Bruno ganz is undefeatable as hitler but Alec guiness is accurate in appearance imo but Bruno ganz still takes the cake since he acts more like hitler
Looking like hitler isnt that hard. He happens to have an iconic look thats easy to pull of if its combined with good acting. Doesnt even need to be an European man as Taika Waititi with blue contact lenses and a wig looks enough like hitler too.
clip from more civilized times
lol
This same guy was OG: Obi Wan Kenobi, King Charles I of England and Füher Adolf Hitler
2:02 FEGELEIN! FEGELEIN!
It's strange how Himmler, Speer and Goring are not in this movie.
I don't think they were in the bunker. Maybe Speer went into visit.
@@Enzo012 Goring wasnt in the bunker (and at this point the nazis arrested him for treason). Speer was in the bunker, but not sure about Himmler
They were shooting coronation Street at the time...
@@Enzo012 The Nazi bigwigs briefly stopped in Berlin on April 20th to wish Hitler a happy birthday, and then got out of Dodge before the city was cutoff after the 22nd.
Obi wan kenobi seems to be the most realistic hiter of all time, very good actor too.
i know you have more honor than Hitler,Obi Wan
Hitler- 'I feel a great disturbance in the force'
Fegelein- 'Sorry mein Fuhrer, I farted'
"If they strike Him down He will become more powerful then they could possibly imagine." Fast forward to the 80's Hitler returns in the film "Kung Fury" to seek revenge on the world.
Obi H Kenobi was obsessed with the High Ground before it was memed
Master ? Is that you ?
I still have this on an old vhs tape...still plays pretty damn good and I watch it about once a year...the last days in the Fuehrerbunker will always be a source of fascination and study for me. What really happened ? What was he really thinking ? Are these movies accurate like they say ? We'll never truly know.
+Paul A it is on DVD now available at amazon
I reckon they all buggered off to Argentina. I don't think he killed himself at all.
@@johnboydojo How quickly you forget, the by April 30, the Red Army was only a block away from the Reich Chancellery.
@@johnboydojohis wish was to remain in Berlin, like a captain going down with his ship.
He was offered a way out by a well known female German aviator, but declined.
There's a story that he was sedated by his companions and smuggled out of the country.
2 people were upset that Obi-Wan Kenobi has turned to the Dark Side.
Those rooms have then been submerged in water before getting filled with dirt and gravel. A parking lot is now over it amongst Eastern Germany style apartment buildings.
Portraying a very likeable Hitler here. Good performance, but not very Hitler like at all. Also a bit involuntarily comical. Hitler in his last days, so fit and happy? Doubt it. He was sick to the grave, had completely lost his mind.
He lapsed into episodes, but there were moments where he was joyful almost blizzfully detatched from everything - due to the drugs (medications) that he was administered.
Besides, this is too British
Johann von Hundert sir alec guiness is a very likable man, who portrays some of the most ruthless villains throughout history as some of the most charming and likable people the world has ever seen, time and time again. The same was done when alec guiness played king charles the 1st in the film 'oliver cromwell'. His character was supposed to be a corrupt and cruel tyrant, but naturally alecs performance and portrayal of him made him the most favorabel character in the film, and as much as i disagreed with the kings actions throughout the film, i couldnt help but continuously route for him because of how charming alec portrayed him to be. He shall forever go down as one of the best actors the world has ever seen!
Hitlers reputation was mostly from his yelling speeches, he actually was a very joyful person. But he had a cold side. (chuckle.) The most believable one I have seen though was the one the soviet movie Liberation. he speaks german.
Hitler could be very pleasent conversationalist. When I heard one of the only records of Hitler speaking privately with Mannerheim from tape (taping Hitler's privately was forbidden), I was actually shocked because instead of a raging demagogue from all the public appearances, he sounded like a human being. Granted, the situation was that he was trying to appeal Mannerheim for help and assure him that setbacks were just minor, but it still amazed me how he could transform from rabble rouser to a diplomat. And this was probably his most terrifying ability.
Still, I think that Alec Guinness performance....is bit too warm and at times over the top? 0:43 Hitler adored her mother and was deeply scarred by losing her to breast cancer so I've difficul time to believe he would've disrespected her like that.
Granted, he went to unkown territory being first person in west to potray Hitler seriously and he didn't have access to all the material that Bruno Ganz had and I've no doubt that he would've done better if he had, but this is bit difficult to take seriously.
I mean, maybe if this was theather, but as a movie...? I prefer "Downfall" myself over this. Respectable effort, but fell of the mark.
Everybody is right..Guinness seems too cuddly for this role ( even though he really looks like Hitler more than any other actor I've seen ) Downfall was better because it's more realistic in German than English. Das Boot was almost going to be an American made movie with Robert Redford as the captain LOL what a f#cking disaster that would have been hahaha
More realistic...Imagine watching a movie with FDR speaking German...would be a little annoying I would think.
This reflects what some have called the affable hitler who took tea at 4 pm, but even when trying to be conviviial he always dominated the conversation and spewed wrathful remarks and racial insults.
In case anyone wants to know the music heard in the beginnig is called Johann Strauss II - Die Fledermaus Overture.
I think Sir Alec's performance is a bit misunderstood. Sure, this Hitler acts all cuddly with his inner circle. Just like Tony Soprano could be all cuddly with his family and his cronies. There's an aesthetic tension between his apparent joviality and his known viciousness.
He was supposedly very pleasant to be around, according to most ppl that met him, and actually sounded very normal in his speaking voice. So its pretty historically accurate behaviour i think, although he was much more unhinged by the time he was in the bunker.
Of all the Hitlers, Alec Guinness definitely comes closest in terms of appearance.
BEST / FAVORITE Alec Guiness performances
1.) D'Ascoyne family memebers (Kind Hearts and Coronets)
2.) Colonel Nicolson (Bridge on the River Kwai)
3.) Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars)
4.) Fagin (Oliver Twist)
5.) General Zhivago (Doctor Zhivago)
5.) Evidently, this one!
02:45 Except perhaps Mannerheim, if the story is true. Though technically, Hitler was his guest at the time so it might not count.
Interestingly enough, it's also said that he used same trick against Hitler: Mannerheim lit his cigar, because he knew Hitler couldn't stand smoking around him. He fished for his reaction: should Hitler ask or demand him to put it out, Mannerheim believed Hitler was negoatiating from a position of strength. However since he didn't and just kept talking like Mannerheim hadn't done anything, Mannerheim came to conclusion that he had the upperhand here.
But again, this is just anecdotal story told by finnish and german attaches who in turn heard it from people who attended to the meeting. It might or might not be true.
No the secret audio recording from that meeting you can clearly hear mannerheim lighting a cigar.
Yes and you can also clearly hear hitler is not argueing from a position of strenght tho. Didnt really need the cigar for it.
why did they decide to release "the bunker" just 8 years later, telling the same story??
Goddamn...never would've thought Alec Guinness would want to play Hitler.
Every actors dream is to play Hitler you can go completely over-the-top and have fun with it
It's funny Hitler who was in terrible health lecturing people in this scene about smoking, but Churchill who smoked and drank lived to be in his 90's🤣🤣🤣
I knew Alec Guinness was in this movie but he played Hitler
Oh yes! That voice! I just realised it's Alec Guiness. I remember his voice from the movie Cromwell.
i remember this film, when i was a kid it scared the hell out of me,the desperation of the suicide realy touched me,it was very well done,of course when i was a child i dident know much about the crimes of hitler,so i had some empathy for him
@locheelad2 I disagree that Sir Al said it was one of 'his poorest roles'. In Piers Paul Read's biography, he quotes Alec as saying it was one of his top three performances, you don't even have to read the book, it is actually written alongside the picture of Alec as Hitler!
Amazing video.
Thanks for the info ! :)
Can't wait to steal his lines for the next dinner party I attend.
Your user-name, Ultradumbass, is truly a credit to you.
Really sympathetic and humoristic! What a decent austrian chap hey!
You fought in the Great War?!
Yes. I was once an honorable German Soldier like your father.
"We can pay you 2000 now, then pay 15 when we reach Argentina."
Ain’t no way bro was that happy
I had no idea this existed.
It's a part of the overture to the operetta "Die Fledermaus" ("The Bat") by the famous Austrian composer Johann Strauß. The titel refers to a costume that one of the main characters of this operetta wore during a carnival.
The brilliant Sir Alec Guinness played far better roles than this one. But he tried his very best.
You can't win, Stalin... If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful that you can possibly imagine...
Dr. Morell gave Hitler a Happy Birthday Booster.
What’s the name of the music used in the beginning of this scene?
Yes this film was released in 1973
"Absurdly fat" - lol, love it!
Am I mistaken, or did the actor who played Hitlers Pilot, Hans Baur, also play Hans Baur five years later in The Bunker, with Anthony Hopkins? The resemblance is remarkable, right down to the golden cravat.
photos in the bunker were verboten
The most replayed part at 2:01 cuz Fegelein is here.
Downfall Parodies really did a number on WW2 movies, haven't they?
What show or movie is this from?
Watch a movie called "Downfall" - very similar but also more accurate
If I do not hear from Steiner within 15 minutes...
the auld fuller was well ahead of his time on smoking......and smoking bans
classical Actor Sir Alec i'm sure would approve whole heartedly with being relegated to the title of remembrance hereby adorned in the video title
You guys do know Hitler is darth Vader and Stalin is Darth sidious
A lot of comments here criticizing Guinness' performance, and many I agree with. However I think therein lies the danger. When he was not giving barking speeches and foaming at the mouth, I don't think this is too far off what Hitler was really like behind closed doors. How could someone so magnificent and seemingly so warm and with such a passion and love for Germany. How could he be pushing Germany into the abyss, and orchestrating the greatest slaughter of all time.
The last ten days of Nazi Germany however is definitely not the setting for this portrayal. Downfall certainly set the benchmark, looking only a matter of degree away from real documentary footage.
THANK YOU FEGELEIN? FEGELEIN!
@silvanski my bad
Now I see the Third Reich/Star Wars overlaps.
I was waiting for something to blow up in his face since dragline gave him a gift 🤣
I guess casting in those days went:
'always cast the women FAR better looking than they really were in history'.
Jeez - Eva Braun in real life was barely above plain (IMO).
This version is a 'babe'.
Ohhhhh mein feurrrrrr
...and Fegelein was a good friend!
This feels like an episode from the 1990s Mr. Bean series...
very good actor
Did he eat Krebs' fish for dinner?
They give him a hakenkreuz banner as a present? Something he would have seen a million times everyday haha
I believe that banner was his personal standard, a rather unique variation of the symbol.
I love you Alec, but you're just far too warm and cuddly for this role xD
Hitler was a warm and cuddly guy for the people who knew him. Winston Churchill wasn't warm and cuddly at all he confrontational and rude.
@Blackdragon52k It is true. He rather be remember for portraying a despotic monster than portraying some silly space wizard.
Hitler only spoke English in the bunker
