Sir Alec was a chameleon and could disguise himself in any role. Undoubtedly he looks absolutely strikingly like the real Hitler, but alas for whatever reason chose not to bury himself into the role as he did many others, eg with an accent
Indeed. On Hitlers 56th birthday in 1945, he pinned an Iron Cross on a member of the Hitler Youth, who had just blown up a Soviet tank. The young man thanked him, then asked an adjutant who the man was. "Why, that was the Fuhrer." the adjutant replied. He was a shadow of his former self, grey, shaking with Parkinsons and looking more like 70 than 56. Ppl in the Bunker later testified that he looked completely exhausted, and had a strange, indescribable glow in his blue eyes, with a far away look.
1:15 Well, Hitler kinda predicted what Germany would become to be but not exactly how he thought it was. After the war, Germany, west germany in particular, experienced a rapid economic growth, that made many germans recovered in the span of decade, and in 1955 onwards, Germany had become an economic powerhouse of europe
History is written by the victors Hitler expelling central banks, improving his economy after the treaty of Versailles and expelling communist influence in Germany is why he's so hated nowadays, we're not allowed to forget him. If it were not for these points he'd just be another dictator largely forgotten to the general public at large like Franco in Spain around the same time.
@@mrawesome669 Can’t say i agree with this interpretation. There are a large number of factors here. But I think the biggest one was pursuing his imperial ambitions, and in the process stepping on the toes of the British Empire and the Soviets.
The thing about that hoscope, it didn't mention him or the Nazis. Everything else was accurate. Germany rose again as West Germany after the war, reunited with East Germany in 1990 and today financially dominates the European Union.
Thanks for uploading ! I remember watching this as a teenager in '73 when it originally aired on TV. Good cast & script. Mr Guinness gives his usual superlative performance ! :-)
By the spring of 45 Norway was still entirely under Axis control with nearly half a million wermacht soldiers and a completely intact coastal defense system (set up ahead of Allied invasion in 44). I dont think it was so delusional...Churchill did mention not weakening Germany "too much" as to hold off the Soviets from invading all of western Europe. Perhaps the astrological talk comes off a bit strange. Hitler was a die hard...losing Berlin was too great a loss to him to continue his leadership. However, an emergency evacuation to a fortified Norway...launching a final defensive last stand was entirely possible...even in Hitler's last 10 days.
This was part of Germany's problem. Conquering countries and having to police them against internal uprisings and in the case of Norway, possible invasion from the West. Think what those half million soldiers would have meant had they been re-deployed against Russia in say, 1943/44? Hitler wanted to hold on to everything and failed to remember he who tries to hold on to everything, loses everything. As for making a sort of last stand if Hitler had fled to Norway, I doubt they would have had the guns, fuel, or ammunition to make much of a stand.
Guinness certainly looks the part of Hitler, but his portrayal of him is not believable. Bruno Gantz's portrayal of him in "Downfall" is much much better!
@@catiline1 Well then his portrayal was only off by 24 years because from all accounts Hitler was by April 1945 a senile (or at least completely out of touch with reality) pitiful broken down man who was about to collapse at any moment. The combination of the stress caused by his disastrous war and the stress caused by him being a dictator, the after affects of the bombing attack against him the previous summer, his drug addiction, and what many medical experts have suspected to be Parkinsons' Disease, he was indeed on the verge of collapse. Even if somehow he had snuck away on a u boat to South America like some think he did, he would not have lived all that much longer
Hitler really went of the deep end during his last days in the Führerbunker. The Parkinson‘s increased his paranoia ( which was already considerable). He was also withdrawing from the drugs his doctor had been giving him for years ( chiefly Eukodal, or oxycodone, and methamphetamine), which in itself, would probably have made him delusional. 😊
Alec did a good job of playing hitler. But I don’t think butler was optimistic in the bunker days. In fact, his health was getting worse and he started cracking under pressure and becoming paranoid. He was convinced that even his own men were out to get him. That’s why he administered his cyanide capsules on his own dog because he was so paranoid about Himmler supplying them (he and himmler were feuding at the time) that he was convinced the capsules were not good to use for eventual death.
Sorry by this time Hitler looked like shit, he was shaking with parkinsons, his hair was nearly all grey, he had a limp, bloodshot eyes and looked 20 years older than his 56 years... he never looked as good as Ben Kenobi is playing him at this stage.
What about Anthony Hokins( in „The Bunker“) and Robert Carlyle ( in „The Rise of Evil“)? Those were the best portrayals of Hitler that I’ve seen, and both actors are Brits. The British are the world‘s greatest actors. 🇬🇧
i doubt that he would have insulted Eva the way he did, as depicted in this movie ,shortly before killing himself...... not many men can find a woman these days with such devotion, probably the polar opposite happened.
There's also another unrealistic scene where Hitler is disrespective of his mother saying "She wasn't very bright, but she gave birth to a great son!" while it's known Hitler adored his mother and despised his father to no end(and with a good reason). Hell, Hitler even went to so far that he made sure Eduard Bloch, jewish family doctor that treated her, could have protection from Gestapo and that he could emigrate from Nazi-Germany in peace.
The Allies breaking Enigma won the war. They knew where every U boat was patrolling after 1941 and steered convoys around them. Hitler counted on sinking those ships.
